And? "Oh no, Canada and New Zealand are trying to protect their domestic manufacturing a little. We should make American businesses pay 10-30% more to buy from every country on the planet except Russia"
Irrespective of what he says it's also just... true lol. Canada has been tariffing us the entire time and now they're mad we're tariffing them back, as an example.
I think we should drop the tariffs when they do, personally.
Canada has been tariffing the U.S. the entire time, and their own provinces even tariff each other. They are escalating tariffs in response to new U.S. tariffs, not creating them for the first time.
I normally feel bad for people that can't read but you don't seem very sympathetic lmao
Yes, and we've had tarrifs on them the whole time. Blanket tarrifs are still really fucking stupid. Specific tarrifs for specific industries make sense.
And yes they brought their rates up to match ours because they haven't been fucking us over like trump wants you to think.
Also bonus points, this was Trumps trade agreement he renegotiated during his first term. Master of deal making btw.
I mean Canada imposes 35% blanket tariffs on all goods that aren't under trade agreement globally, and they also heavily tariff China. What Trump is doing is actually much more similar to what they've been doing forever than they would admit lol
The imaginary tarrifs. Any source for that? I can't seem to find any evidence of that anywhere. Specifically the part about their tarrifs to us. I don't care what they do or don't do to China, they are not allies, we are.
Also, nice that you excuse them tariffing the crap out of other nations because it isn't bad orange man lmfao. Progressives and their complete intellectual inconsistency lol
Under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), 98 per cent of goods entering Canada from the U.S. have no tariffs – or at least, they didn't before the trade war.
So 2% of goods were at a 35% tarrif. And that provoked blanket tarrifs? Man you are exactly as stupid as I thought.
So they do in fact have global 35% tariffs outside trade agreements, just as I said lol. Would be kind of you to acknowledge that wasn't misinformation as you originally insinuated. And are still deflecting attention away from lmao
Second, this is a source from the Canadian government itself, so of course it's framed as generously as possible. They claim dairy doesn't have the 200% tariffs it does have, because imports have to pass a specific threshold to be tariffed lol. Those types of loopholes and specifications are present in more than one place. They're trying to draw sympathy, which they have succeeded in goading out of stupid people.
Canada will be fine - maybe. Perhaps they'll even stop tariffing their own provinces!
You're right, it wasn't misinformation. Just insanely misleading. 35% tarrifs on 2% of goods doesn't sound nearly as bad. 200% after a certain threshold doesn't sound as bad as 200% why can't you juet present the whole truth? Why do you need to use vague terms to make it sound worse?
Canada will be fine, we'll be fine as well. Everyone will be fine. But we'll all be much worse off than we would have been. But there's no use to using logic with a trumper. Policies don't matter, reality doesn't matter, just vibes.
You feel like canada has screwed us over (with a trade deal negotiated by trump) so now you feel good that Trump is getting back at them.
Canada's tariffs make sense because they have weaker manufacturing than us. That's the point of tariffs, they aren't a fucking "punishment" you throw around for dumbass reasons. The pain from these utterly braindead tariffs will fall on American manufacturers far more than it will on Canada or any other nation.
All reciprocal tariffs have been lower than those imposed on the U.S. economy. Somehow the other nations' tariffs always make perfect sense to shitlibs but reciprocal ones simply cannot lmfao
Because Canada is a different fucking country with a different fucking economy. It doesn't matter how much they tariff us, putting tariffs on them affects us you illiterate slug
Let me guess you're thinking of their tariffs that don't kick in until a massive amount of sales, but people act like it's the flat tariff Canada charges
The issue is trump is just taking a shot gun approach with zero good reasoning or planning.
I'm saying that Canada shouldn't be tariffing the U.S. at all. If they want open trade, provide the same to trade partners instead of crying when they do the same to you.
Obviously you ignored that extremely clear and concise point, but for reasons unknown to me
I've seen numerous threads where it turns out other countries are tariffing us, and the commenters head no idea. Israel, Ukraine, Vietnam all had tariffs on us. Almost every single country tariffs us, what is the problem with turning it back around on them, for likely a handful of weeks? Crazy how America has to take it in the face but can never slap back.
How is this "America slapping back," dude, look at the prices of things going up with these tarrifs. All it's doing is harming me and you; the cost of these tarrifs are passed literally directly on to us.
Why do you care so much about the prices of goods shipped to other countries? Who cares if Canada, Mexico and China have decided that their people should pay more money for goods imported from the USA? That's their problem; the prices don't increase here on domestically produced products for every-day Americans because of tarrifs over there. That's their government deciding to charge their people more money in taxes.
No, dude, we can't. I don't give a fuck what Mexicans pay in Mexico for American products because of their tarrifs on the US; that's Mexico's problem. I do give a fuck about what I have to pay for things in the US, and you should too; this effects everyone and prices for things have already increased massively.
Then we just don't see eye to eye. That's fine. But these corrupt countries should not be tariffing our quality products. The rest of the world is screaming for a reason, and it's not for our own wellbeing.
I hope this is the domino that starves you idiots out so I don't have to listen to your shit anymore, but I should be so optimistic; nothing ever happens. Despite all the online hysterics, my life hasn't changed in the last ten years in any conceivable way that could be traced to the goings-on in Washington DC.
Uh huh, tell that to electronics, furniture, gas, clothes prices and more. The laptop I bought over a year ago I noticed jumped $700 in price the other day. I received an email from my music instrument supplier warning that because of the new tarrifs prices are going to go up very soon. Thank God for the moment I don't need to consoom, but until these tarrifs are reversed these prices are going to stay this way, and get worse as people's stockpile of imported goods run out.
People like you complain about the prices of things going up, of things like inflation, and then say the most stupid shit like this about how "I never noticed anything change!!!"
Maybe you gotta get you're fucking eyes checked, dude, how's your grocery bill doing? Enjoying those eggs? In b4 "Oh that ain't the governments fault!"
Yes, I'm very much enjoying the same six eggs per day for breakfast that I've been eating for years and years. Wait, prices went up again just like it did under Biden in 2022? Oh no, good thing I'm not poor. Wait, they're coming down again? Of course they are, they always do. Nothing has changed. My bank account remains plentiful.
That's the thing. I have money and savings, and you don't. I don't need to consoom absolutely everything that's waved in front of me, but you do. I can well withstand some short-term price pain for the long-term communal gain of bringing manufacturing and jobs back to domestic soil, and you can't. And I'll vote for it, because I'm selfless that way. You won't, and you'll scream like a piggy in protest, because in spirit you are a seedy, self-serving NIMBY boomer.
Unlike you, I'm not some derelict gutterball living paycheck-to-paycheck, anxiously picking my ballsack wrinkles waiting for the next one to clear so I can go blow it all on Starbucks, dudeweed, clarinets, reddit-approved IPAs, and new Switch games, then bitch online about how broke I am and blame it on orange peepeepoopooman.
It's crazy how fast you switched from "The government never changed anything that affected me!!!" to "Biden caused eggs to change prices, and now prices are changing again!!" And then you say "nothing changed" after literally describing a change lmao.
Don't you get whiplash changing your opinion so fast? Why you ignoring all the other stuff that has increased in price?
The rest of your stuff is stupid and not even worth mentioning; it's very clear you're very insecure about your finances if you feel the need to bring it up on reddit to some dude you never met. Literally nothing of substance in your whole ass response; it baffles me that the lowest IQ population is even allowed to vote. If I had it my way, I think we should just snip off the testicals of all you idiots. You shouldn't reproduce.
You realize that trump’s tariff chart for other countries is not that they have tariffs on the USA right? Trump did some stupid calculations with trade deficit and came up with the number, nothing to do with tariffs.
Europe for example has like 1% tariffs and trump is just lying to his voters(not that hard considering you are all a bit mentally challenged) to say that they have 40% tariffs on the USA.
https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2025/04/03/fact-check-are-donald-trumps-tariffs-on-the-eu-really-reciprocal#:~:text=The%20EU%20does%20not%20impose,the%20actual%20trade%20in%20goods%22.
The US administration, however, points to an unfair "asymmetry" in certain tariff rates. For example, the EU applies a 10% tariff on US car imports, while the US charges just 2.5%.
Directly from your source, thanks. These are tariffs. I'm betting if these corrupt countries cancel all their tariffs, the US may do the same.
I mean, if you think that’s bad the USA wants 40% on everything coming from Europe, not just cars. The market crash today shows how nicely that’s going to work. Also, I’m curious, what’s your opinion on trump no tariffing Russia and North Korea? Consider that he made tariffs for islands in Antarctic with 0 people
if you think that’s bad the USA wants 40% on everything coming from Europe
Yes that's how Trump operates, he will always one-up you. Europe should have considered when they elected to continue all their tariffs after Trump won the election. They should reconsider now.
Russia already has tariffs placed upon them, though they should be even higher. I'm not concerned with North Korea.
>trump always one ups you
If you call making 40% tariffs for countries that tariff you 1% one upping, sure. Though I’m pretty sure he’ll never get what he wants chimping out like that
>russia already has tariffs placed upon them
Not for long if it depends on trump https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/03/trump-treasury-sanctions-putin-russia-rotenberg-ukraine.html
‘The European Commission says it charges an average tariff of just 1% on US products entering the EU market, “considering the actual trade in goods”. It adds that the US administration collected approximately €7 billion of tariffs on EU products in 2023 compared to the EU’s €3 billion on US goods.
A World Trade Organisation (WTO) estimate puts the average tariff rate on US products entering the EU slightly higher at 4.8%.’
4.8% at only 1% of products, that certainly justifies 40% tariffs on everything coming from Europe. Economy geniuses.
Brussels says, however, that this fails to consider the fact that the US imposes a 25% tariff on EU-made pickup trucks, which are a favourite among US consumers and account for "about one third of all vehicle sales.
Literally the next paragraph in the same source.
So the EU puts an average of 1% tariffs on US goods, and both the US and EU pick and choose specific goods to tariff more to encourage domestic production. But somehow Trump says there's a flat 39% tariff from the EU in order to justify a flat 20% tariff? How do you justify that?
It doesn't "turn back on them." We're charging American businesses tax to continue running. That hurts us more than it hurts them. Tariffs are for making specific political moves not something you throw at every country on the fucking planet.
Because tariffs are used like a scalpel. We're the biggest economy on the planet, if you can't come up with ideas on why all the smaller countries would try to keep their economies independent from the one largest economy then you are a moron.
The US separating itself from every country is beyond fucking stupid and exactly what has lead us to severe economic disasters in the past. It will not and cannot help American businesses to force them to pay more money for every import.
Right, I forgot that I'm arguing with a literal toddler incapable of understanding the most basic of economic principles. Have fun drooling on yourself today buddy!
No, it's from looking up what tariffs are and why they are used and how they affect a nations economy. If you could read you would do the same, but alas...
The U.S. has the strongest economy in the world; our companies exploit cheap materials, products, and labor globally. In exchange, we advance and innovate in sectors that most others counties would take years or decades to match what we could accomplish. Other countries tariff the U.S. to try to catch up in specific sectors to try to level the playing field, but in reality even before tariffs, we were already coming out head and shoulders ahead. Now the Trump admin wants to have their cake and eat it too and placed blanket tariffs on everything which doesn’t even make sense from the benefit of the U.S.; in turn we are going to have a major economic slowdown, for the exchange of potentially some companies moving some production back here (which still may happen due to cost). At the end of the day you should ask yourself, why the fuck do we want textile and cheap labor jobs back in the U.S. when we could’ve done literally nothing different and continued our economic dominance.
Sorry, I’ve been seeing this rhetoric from bots/neanderthals that I had to type out a response at least once for my peace of mind.
Genuine question even if we had all these factories we need built overnight who do you think are gonna want to work in them? According to most conservatives I know Gen Z is too lazy and realistically not one trump supporter i've personally met wants to be stuck working in a factory at least 40 hours a week when trump wants to shut down OSHA. Especially if safety regulations are removed all that's gonna happen is people are gonna relearn why we had them in the first place.
Speaking from experience, there are actually more than a lot of guys in the lower classes that would love that type of work instead of office jobs if it meant it pays nice. A lot of it really has to do with culture more than anything. Factory jobs, like many careers, have always been dangerous. The difference is that with the expansion of more technical careers, those jobs are now looked down upon. If they start bringing back those jobs in large amounts, public perception could likely shift to a more positive attitude if it is a sincerely stable income source.
i suppose but that itself also poses two more problems; what the minimum wage will be and how that will affect the price of anything made in the US, and the possibility of Osha being taken apart and safety regulations being removed.
A decent amount of states in the Us set their own minimum wage and that can vary between 15$ to 7.25. People will likely not want to work in a factory that is only just barely above minimum wage, but if the wage is too high the company that owns the factory will likely drive prices on the product up as well to recuperate the loss. The reality is
That doesn't even account for if Osha is deregulated as a lot of factories have historically tended to ignore employee safety if profit is greater. And if factories become dangerous due to lack of safety regulations that just makes people even less likely to want to work there.
I haven't even gone into how trying to isolate the US and making all our allies hate us will likely also have consequences in the future.
Realistically, I can see the wage thing being more of a tenure related system. It'll probably start at minimum wage and slowly increase with seniority. In the end, it doesn't matter if people don't want to work there, they will. I don't want to work at my current job, but I still do because it affords me money. For better or worse, I see them using the system that Amazon has for many of its positions. If there is a vacancy, people will take it, safe environment or not. The vast majority of history has basically proven that the lower classes will fill up these slots either out of desperation or necessity.
Lmao so your genius response is just absentmindedly excusing tariffs against the U.S. in longform and saying U.S. tariffs are bad cause "blanket" even though tariffs against us are often blanket.
I'm glad you cleared your cluttered conscience so easily though, and I've never even seen a bot dumb enough to say what you just did lol
Melodramatic 17 year old incels talking about literacy while they baselessly bemoan something they've never thought about for a second on Reddit is beyond perfect 😭😭
The media narrative is that the US is demonic for considering tariffs when every single other developed country utilizes them.
And no one bothers to actually look it up.
I currently was just called a drumpfian because I dared to call that out.
It is just the truth.
Europeans are incredibly hypocritical on the burden they impose on the U.S.
It's like they want everything to come at our expense while they benefit the absolute most they can out of it. Rarely any cost or price paid on their behalf.
I have seen so many posts on the internet from Americans completely missing the point it's insane.
They really, actually think they are pulling the wool over everyone eyes. Not even knowing that the only thing that will happen, is that they have to pay more for products not made in America.
They are literally celebrating that they will have to pay more across the board because they have no clue what tariffs are and who is paying for them.
Most people were either already against it or have changed their minds. Unfortunately most I’d probably 49.9 to 50.1 cuz we are a country full of propaganda and half the people are still dumb
This is only the first step into fully realizing what the world is like.
The first step is realizing that half the people on this planet are stupid. The next step is realizing that the other half is even stupider.
I would go as far to argue that a good 90% of the population is dumb af. After all we are dealing with big numbers here. And even if you say 10% are smart. That would 800 million people. That's a lot. And i honestly don't believe that there are 800 million smart people on this world tbh.
I was being polite. I’d go with your 10% number but think you’re underestimating global diversity when you say 800 mil is a lot. Intelligence doesn’t always present in the same way. Even though I use intelligence a lot in this context, I wonder if aptitude might be a better measure. It’s hard to account for every bias when we look on a global scale. The smartest rice farmer to ever exist might never be considered intelligent even if they change rice farming forever while the dumbest businessman may show well by the same metric. The way we treat intelligence is arguable more important than raw intelligence
Of course you are correct. Intelligence is a hard thing to quantify. And i personally believe IQ means very little in the grand scheme of things. Because IQ has been steadily rising according to some sources. Yet people seem to grow dumber each year.
Me personally. I see intellgience more in the way of someone being capable of doing the best with what they have. You know. Things like common sense. The ability to reason. To conclude and question things. The ability to want to know things. That for me is intelligence.
But even so. I stand by my previous number. 800 million people i would consider smart is a lot. In fact. The 800 million i was refering too are just people that are smart enough to make the best out of their own lives. I wasn't taking about people capable of revolutinizing anything.
Real genuises are even rarer. I would say maybe 1% of said 10% are actually smart enough to at least change things around them. And maybe change things for the world at large. After all that's still 8 million people.
We have very similar viewpoints then. A genius is considered to have 140+ IQ so if you ignore the flaws in IQ that’s about 1 in 10,000 so even more rare than your number. That’s all so arbitrary though so I don’t put any real weight on it
People dont even know that tariffs already exist all countries do it with each other (unless there are free trade treaties or things like that). Its natural for imports to be less desirable to any economy since its money being bled. The thing is, there is also a need to import obviously, so the tariffs are usually balanced like that. In the end who really pays the tariff is the consumer, and it blows dick to make these tariffs violent
Correct. That's why the EU is a big deal. Because different countries in it wave a lot of tariffs with each other to make trade of goods easier.
Sure. There are still tariffs. But way less then with other countries outside the EU. Which is precisely why tariff's won't impact the EU as badly as other countries. Because each country in the EU already has pleny of trading partners. My country for example can basically import anything we need from within europe. At basically no extra costs.
Uh, no. There are absolutely no tariffs or trade barriers of any kind inside the EU between members. That's why it's called a single market. The EU is based on four freedoms
Free movement of Goods, People, Services and Capital.
“The general public of the United States is stupid” was one of the first things I learned in my American Politics & Presidency class at college trust me even our own population knows this
As an American, I think most of my own countrymen are retards, but I still find that the air of superiority from Europeans is largely undeserved, especially if we look at all their historical and cultural blunders.
Russia has been our number one enemy since WW2 ended but now trumpers are u ironically calling for ukraine to stop getting support fighting off russia’s invasion and acting like zelensky is a dictator
I genuinely cant imagine being that willing to abandon your morals. From 50+ years of antirussian propaganda to being pro Putin just because trump is a Russian puppet
Russia has been propagandarized to be your enemy. In realtiy they are probably not really an enemy. At least not as much as you think. Just like China isn't.
People don't get this. But the upper echoleon of every country is essentially friends. And they are all working together to fuck the small people over. Sure some are closer with each other then others. But everytime you see any of them hating on one another. It's just another ploy to fearmonger. So people are distracted and don't realize how hard they are getting fucked over.
Thats like saying Costo and Sams aren’t competitors because they both sell bulk groceries
Putin and Trump aren’t friends, Putin is just using Trump’s incompetence to divide the US population and weaken its economic power. This will allow Russia and China to be the only Superpowers so that they can continue to disregard anything the UN does/says because it no longer has a Superpower backing it
As much as people may dislike having the US play world police it will be way worse if Russia or China are in control of the international stage
CFR has always been fairly neoliberal/even left leaning at times in my experience, wonder how they got roped into this. I would have replaced them with cato/heritage foundation
They should make the schizophrenic anti-imperialist communist that is somehow also a diehard cuck for Russia, China, Venezuela, North Korea, Iran and Palestine.
I love when people make fun of All Lives Matter like I'm supposed to think that's controversial. That's so tame and altruistic Superman would probably be wearing that sticker to work
4chan is contrarian at heart. Whatever the mainstream opinion is, they'll oppose it. In 2015 Trump was a joke presidential candidate so naturally 4chan supported him for the memes. Now, MAGA has gone mainstream and controls the government and Elon went from "he's just like me fr" to cringe edgelord trying to pretend he has 4chan cred. So now 4chan has turned on them.
Sounds like they're proper journalists. Sure, you should give credit where credit is due but I always switch the platforms depending on who's in charge. When a Republican is President, I read outlets like CNN, when a Democrat is President, I try to find serious conservative media like the Wall Street Journal.
They hate the non-rich who went to college, who are the most resistant to being reprogrammed by nonsensical ideas and harvested for votes by demagogues.
Rich and went to college, fine. Literally any tax cut buys those votes. Rich or not rich and didn't go to college, also fine. They believe any bullshit you say if you say it demagoguey enough
A lot of advanced schooling is based on logic and problem solving, and it actually helps with resisting bullshit. You calling it government controlled is telling enough lol.
If colleges aren't government dogs why are they removing DEI from their application platforms which they have installed in the first place? They will always swing where the head of the government swings.
Because the government said so, and threatens to cut funding if they don't. Sorry but sometimes you have to suck up bullshit so you don't shut down. Doesn't mean they're "dogs."
Nope. If you claim to be offended at an action, yet take the action yourself, you are lying about being against the action. You just want to keep the advantage to yourself. It's effectively cheating.
Cheating? This isn't a vidya game. You can acknowledge and still condemn multiple things. Thing is people say what about when this happened? And usually it's not comparable and even if it is, often it has been acknowledged.
You don’t understand, the streamer with rotten teeth and next to no real world experience told me Trump is a genius and the entire world will bend the knee to the god emperor
I think it's hilarious that Reddit's kneejerk reaction is to hate on this policy because it's Trump. This is a bigger boost to low-level American workers at the expense of the capitalist class than Bernie's wettest wet dream. Labor wages as a percentage of GDP have declined nearly every year since the early 70s. Factory productivity has not improved markedly in 15 years. This is all because company executives have been outsourcing jobs to 3rd world countries where people will work for 1/5 of American wages instead of investing in training American workers and investing in productive domestic capital. The net result is that share owners and executives have continued to get richer as workers have gotten poorer competing with the cheapest workers globally. The left should absolutely be cheering this and the right panicking. But, this is the world we live in now.
That's a bad take my brother in Christ. Even if there are widespread domestic layoffs related to the tariffs, which I have not seen reported, companies don't, and can't, lay off people the same day some event happens.
Trump is being a moron about rolling out tariffs.
All countries being impacted by our tariffs claiming Trump is a traitor to their good vibes currently have tariffs deployed to prop up their own economies.
Trump is a moron and US allies are comfortable exploiting the foreign markets/aid and are hypocrites.
Both are true.
Please show any tariffs comparable to the ones trump recently imposed? Keep in mind it’s 10% base for everyone, with some getting as high as 50% in total.
Look up the reciprocal tariff chart.
It will break it down nice and easy for you.
But if you can't trust that, the tariffs charged to the US are openly available information.
There are a lot.
And they are often 50% or higher.
the tariffs charged to the US are openly available information. There are a lot. And they are often 50% or higher.
Very rarely are tariffs any kind of flat rate on everything from a country; generally, nations have tariffs on specific goods, usually for industries they want to protect. This makes it difficult to reasonably express the tariffs they charge as a single number, because it really isn't a single number.
But, using Canada as an example, it appears that at least the effective tariff rate fell from about 2.6% in 1988 to about 0.2% through the 2000s and 2010s, with effective US tariffs being in the same general range.
As others have pointed out (if harshly), the numbers purported to be 'reciprocal tariffs' on the chart are not in fact tariffs at all, they're just a percentage expression of the trade deficit ratio. They've put up a page explaining it, if one that I think perhaps is trying harder to make it sound complicated than to make it sound simple. You can see the equation at the bottom, the one with four variables; ε and φ are not country-specific, and since they've chosen ε to be 4 and φ to be .25, the two multiplied together effectively drop out of the equation altogether. Thus, we are left with a very simple calculation of (exports - imports)/imports - which has no immediate dependence upon any actually-charged tariffs at all.
My god, had to be a republican to be stupid enough to fall for that shit. Trump is so stupid he did some dumb calculations with trade deficit, nothing to do with tariffs, and you’re even stupider for believing him.
I looked it up you imbecile, that’s how I know it’s bullshit. Search anywhere that isn’t maganews.com and you’ll see that the tariffs on trump’s chart is bullshit. https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2025/04/03/fact-check-are-donald-trumps-tariffs-on-the-eu-really-reciprocal
You’re a dumbass, those “tariffs” were calculated by dividing exports by imports which no one who isn’t slobbing on the orange knob considers tariffs. Please give me any organization that isn’t part of the administration who agrees with those numbers.
A trade deficit isn’t a tariff. Even dumber than that, oh noooooo! How could they abuse us like this!!??! We’re only the richest country in the world!!! How could they trade with us in a way daddy doesn’t like or understand????!!!? We couldn’t possibly have negotiated these trade deals that benefit us!!!
Brother. Whatever data you’re getting, I assure you it’s not it. We chose to trade rather than produce everything locally because it was outright cheaper for us as a country. Trade deals are done because they’re mutually beneficial. Both parties negotiate and come out happy, or the deal doesn’t happen. I’m not sure how you have this idea everyone is fucking us over when we’ve continued to grow more than almost everyone else, maintained the status as the richest country in the world, and came out of every recession stronger than anyone else.
We are not actually the richest country in the world if you care about anyone outside of the top 1%. Our citizenry is getting poorer, sicker, and less educated.
Our idea of poverty is so many magnitudes removed from poverty anywhere else in the world that it screams privilege. Stop larping and twisting words to fit your mental gymnastics. We are not a poor country. We are literally sick from the adverse effects of wealth- obesity from excess food. We are largely educated. That’s why we don’t sit on fucking assembly lines making carriages for cars anymore. If you don’t think we’re doing good enough on those metrics, then sure, but what on earth does that have to do with the fact that we pay other countries for cheaper goods than we can produce?
When the point is "this information is available to literally anyone" but yet a legion of restarted, emotional le reddit hypocrites come out in droves, then I have no shame in saying it.
Basedandtendiepilled@reddit
Do people not know other countries are already aggressively tariffing the U.S.? Canada even has tariffs between its own provinces lmao
SalvationSycamore@reddit
And? "Oh no, Canada and New Zealand are trying to protect their domestic manufacturing a little. We should make American businesses pay 10-30% more to buy from every country on the planet except Russia"
Basedandtendiepilled@reddit
Our tariffs are actually less than what most countries have imposed
SalvationSycamore@reddit
Are you going off the made up numbers Donald showed on his dumb little board?
Basedandtendiepilled@reddit
Irrespective of what he says it's also just... true lol. Canada has been tariffing us the entire time and now they're mad we're tariffing them back, as an example.
I think we should drop the tariffs when they do, personally.
Soulless35@reddit
That's why Canada announced reciprocal tarrifs matching the us ones... because they already had them?
Magats are so stupid it's insane.
Basedandtendiepilled@reddit

The imaginary tarrifs. Any source for that? I can't seem to find any evidence of that anywhere. Specifically the part about their tarrifs to us. I don't care what they do or don't do to China, they are not allies, we are.
Basedandtendiepilled@reddit
If you had Google where you lived, you might find that Canada openly discloses their policy regarding default 35% tariffs outside trade agreements.
Also, nice that you excuse them tariffing the crap out of other nations because it isn't bad orange man lmfao. Progressives and their complete intellectual inconsistency lol
Soulless35@reddit
From your article
So 2% of goods were at a 35% tarrif. And that provoked blanket tarrifs? Man you are exactly as stupid as I thought.
Basedandtendiepilled@reddit
Soulless35@reddit
SalvationSycamore@reddit
Canada's tariffs make sense because they have weaker manufacturing than us. That's the point of tariffs, they aren't a fucking "punishment" you throw around for dumbass reasons. The pain from these utterly braindead tariffs will fall on American manufacturers far more than it will on Canada or any other nation.
Basedandtendiepilled@reddit
All reciprocal tariffs have been lower than those imposed on the U.S. economy. Somehow the other nations' tariffs always make perfect sense to shitlibs but reciprocal ones simply cannot lmfao
SalvationSycamore@reddit
Because Canada is a different fucking country with a different fucking economy. It doesn't matter how much they tariff us, putting tariffs on them affects us you illiterate slug
SpectorEscape@reddit
Let me guess you're thinking of their tariffs that don't kick in until a massive amount of sales, but people act like it's the flat tariff Canada charges
The issue is trump is just taking a shot gun approach with zero good reasoning or planning.
Basedandtendiepilled@reddit
So Canada, having had tariffs the entire time, is totally fine? They're escalating tariffs now, not implementing the. For the first time.
SpectorEscape@reddit
You pretty much ignored my entire messages point. Good job.
Basedandtendiepilled@reddit
I'm saying that Canada shouldn't be tariffing the U.S. at all. If they want open trade, provide the same to trade partners instead of crying when they do the same to you.
Obviously you ignored that extremely clear and concise point, but for reasons unknown to me
SpectorEscape@reddit
That's not how it works.
Also, once again, those tariff numbers are only after so many sales and targeted, not a shotgun total tariff like trumps doing.
They're also deals trump made himself. So id you hate it, at least you admit trump is shitty at making deals.
Komania@reddit
And yet doing it to every country across all industries all at once is moronic
JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
I've seen numerous threads where it turns out other countries are tariffing us, and the commenters head no idea. Israel, Ukraine, Vietnam all had tariffs on us. Almost every single country tariffs us, what is the problem with turning it back around on them, for likely a handful of weeks? Crazy how America has to take it in the face but can never slap back.
ShitImBadAtThis@reddit
How is this "America slapping back," dude, look at the prices of things going up with these tarrifs. All it's doing is harming me and you; the cost of these tarrifs are passed literally directly on to us.
JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
So we can agree that tariffs are damaging? Perhaps then other countries should stop tariffing us too
ShitImBadAtThis@reddit
Why do you care so much about the prices of goods shipped to other countries? Who cares if Canada, Mexico and China have decided that their people should pay more money for goods imported from the USA? That's their problem; the prices don't increase here on domestically produced products for every-day Americans because of tarrifs over there. That's their government deciding to charge their people more money in taxes.
JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
So we cant agree that tariffs are damaging and that other countries should stop tariffing us as well?
ShitImBadAtThis@reddit
No, dude, we can't. I don't give a fuck what Mexicans pay in Mexico for American products because of their tarrifs on the US; that's Mexico's problem. I do give a fuck about what I have to pay for things in the US, and you should too; this effects everyone and prices for things have already increased massively.
JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
Then we just don't see eye to eye. That's fine. But these corrupt countries should not be tariffing our quality products. The rest of the world is screaming for a reason, and it's not for our own wellbeing.

Despite all the online hysterics, my life hasn't changed in the last ten years in any conceivable way that could be traced to the goings-on in Washington DC.
ShitImBadAtThis@reddit
__VOMITLOVER@reddit
ShitImBadAtThis@reddit
You realize that trump’s tariff chart for other countries is not that they have tariffs on the USA right? Trump did some stupid calculations with trade deficit and came up with the number, nothing to do with tariffs.
JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
Other countries have tariffs on us.
11freebird@reddit
Europe for example has like 1% tariffs and trump is just lying to his voters(not that hard considering you are all a bit mentally challenged) to say that they have 40% tariffs on the USA. https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2025/04/03/fact-check-are-donald-trumps-tariffs-on-the-eu-really-reciprocal#:~:text=The%20EU%20does%20not%20impose,the%20actual%20trade%20in%20goods%22.
JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
Directly from your source, thanks. These are tariffs. I'm betting if these corrupt countries cancel all their tariffs, the US may do the same.
11freebird@reddit
I mean, if you think that’s bad the USA wants 40% on everything coming from Europe, not just cars. The market crash today shows how nicely that’s going to work. Also, I’m curious, what’s your opinion on trump no tariffing Russia and North Korea? Consider that he made tariffs for islands in Antarctic with 0 people
JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
Yes that's how Trump operates, he will always one-up you. Europe should have considered when they elected to continue all their tariffs after Trump won the election. They should reconsider now.
Russia already has tariffs placed upon them, though they should be even higher. I'm not concerned with North Korea.
11freebird@reddit
>trump always one ups you If you call making 40% tariffs for countries that tariff you 1% one upping, sure. Though I’m pretty sure he’ll never get what he wants chimping out like that >russia already has tariffs placed upon them Not for long if it depends on trump https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/03/trump-treasury-sanctions-putin-russia-rotenberg-ukraine.html
JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
Your source says otherwise, we already confirmed that previously.
Russia is currently tariffed.
TheRealAlkali@reddit
You should finish reading the source. It might help you understand.
11freebird@reddit
‘The European Commission says it charges an average tariff of just 1% on US products entering the EU market, “considering the actual trade in goods”. It adds that the US administration collected approximately €7 billion of tariffs on EU products in 2023 compared to the EU’s €3 billion on US goods. A World Trade Organisation (WTO) estimate puts the average tariff rate on US products entering the EU slightly higher at 4.8%.’ 4.8% at only 1% of products, that certainly justifies 40% tariffs on everything coming from Europe. Economy geniuses.
TheRealAlkali@reddit
Literally the next paragraph in the same source.
So the EU puts an average of 1% tariffs on US goods, and both the US and EU pick and choose specific goods to tariff more to encourage domestic production. But somehow Trump says there's a flat 39% tariff from the EU in order to justify a flat 20% tariff? How do you justify that?
FinisDierum@reddit
Australia and the US had a free trade agreement and you just tariffed us, so you cunts can get fucked
SalvationSycamore@reddit
It doesn't "turn back on them." We're charging American businesses tax to continue running. That hurts us more than it hurts them. Tariffs are for making specific political moves not something you throw at every country on the fucking planet.
JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
Then why does nearly every country tariff us? You're not going to convince people with "yeah they can tariff us, but we shouldnt tariff them".
SalvationSycamore@reddit
Because tariffs are used like a scalpel. We're the biggest economy on the planet, if you can't come up with ideas on why all the smaller countries would try to keep their economies independent from the one largest economy then you are a moron.
The US separating itself from every country is beyond fucking stupid and exactly what has lead us to severe economic disasters in the past. It will not and cannot help American businesses to force them to pay more money for every import.
JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
SalvationSycamore@reddit

JustDontBeFat_GodDam@reddit
Are you getting your "economic principles" from fox news or something? lol
SalvationSycamore@reddit
No, it's from looking up what tariffs are and why they are used and how they affect a nations economy. If you could read you would do the same, but alas...
Cream314Fan@reddit
The U.S. has the strongest economy in the world; our companies exploit cheap materials, products, and labor globally.
NCR_High-Roller@reddit
People want jobs back in America. It's not about keeping the status quo. It's about dramatically shifting the order of things.
Chrysanthemumfyre@reddit
Genuine question even if we had all these factories we need built overnight who do you think are gonna want to work in them? According to most conservatives I know Gen Z is too lazy and realistically not one trump supporter i've personally met wants to be stuck working in a factory at least 40 hours a week when trump wants to shut down OSHA. Especially if safety regulations are removed all that's gonna happen is people are gonna relearn why we had them in the first place.
NCR_High-Roller@reddit
Speaking from experience, there are actually more than a lot of guys in the lower classes that would love that type of work instead of office jobs if it meant it pays nice. A lot of it really has to do with culture more than anything. Factory jobs, like many careers, have always been dangerous. The difference is that with the expansion of more technical careers, those jobs are now looked down upon. If they start bringing back those jobs in large amounts, public perception could likely shift to a more positive attitude if it is a sincerely stable income source.
Chrysanthemumfyre@reddit
i suppose but that itself also poses two more problems; what the minimum wage will be and how that will affect the price of anything made in the US, and the possibility of Osha being taken apart and safety regulations being removed.
NCR_High-Roller@reddit
Realistically, I can see the wage thing being more of a tenure related system. It'll probably start at minimum wage and slowly increase with seniority. In the end, it doesn't matter if people don't want to work there, they will. I don't want to work at my current job, but I still do because it affords me money. For better or worse, I see them using the system that Amazon has for many of its positions. If there is a vacancy, people will take it, safe environment or not. The vast majority of history has basically proven that the lower classes will fill up these slots either out of desperation or necessity.
Chrysanthemumfyre@reddit
I suppose but considering how Amazon seems to treat its workers a future like that isn't exactly something i'd personally look forward too.
NCR_High-Roller@reddit
It's not one I want either, but it's a very probable one.
Basedandtendiepilled@reddit

I have seen so many posts on the internet from Americans completely missing the point it's insane.
They really, actually think they are pulling the wool over everyone eyes. Not even knowing that the only thing that will happen, is that they have to pay more for products not made in America.
They are literally celebrating that they will have to pay more across the board because they have no clue what tariffs are and who is paying for them.
Calm-Technology7351@reddit
Most people were either already against it or have changed their minds. Unfortunately most I’d probably 49.9 to 50.1 cuz we are a country full of propaganda and half the people are still dumb
Danijay2@reddit
This is only the first step into fully realizing what the world is like.
The first step is realizing that half the people on this planet are stupid. The next step is realizing that the other half is even stupider.
I would go as far to argue that a good 90% of the population is dumb af. After all we are dealing with big numbers here. And even if you say 10% are smart. That would 800 million people. That's a lot. And i honestly don't believe that there are 800 million smart people on this world tbh.
Calm-Technology7351@reddit
I was being polite. I’d go with your 10% number but think you’re underestimating global diversity when you say 800 mil is a lot. Intelligence doesn’t always present in the same way. Even though I use intelligence a lot in this context, I wonder if aptitude might be a better measure. It’s hard to account for every bias when we look on a global scale. The smartest rice farmer to ever exist might never be considered intelligent even if they change rice farming forever while the dumbest businessman may show well by the same metric. The way we treat intelligence is arguable more important than raw intelligence
Danijay2@reddit
Calm-Technology7351@reddit
We have very similar viewpoints then. A genius is considered to have 140+ IQ so if you ignore the flaws in IQ that’s about 1 in 10,000 so even more rare than your number. That’s all so arbitrary though so I don’t put any real weight on it
Sean-Benn_Must-die@reddit
People dont even know that tariffs already exist all countries do it with each other (unless there are free trade treaties or things like that). Its natural for imports to be less desirable to any economy since its money being bled. The thing is, there is also a need to import obviously, so the tariffs are usually balanced like that. In the end who really pays the tariff is the consumer, and it blows dick to make these tariffs violent
Danijay2@reddit
At basically no extra costs.
megakaos888@reddit
Uh, no. There are absolutely no tariffs or trade barriers of any kind inside the EU between members. That's why it's called a single market. The EU is based on four freedoms

People don't get this. But the upper echoleon of every country is essentially friends. And they are all working together to fuck the small people over. Sounds like they're proper journalists. Sure, you should give credit where credit is due but I always switch the platforms depending on who's in charge. When a Republican is President, I read outlets like CNN, when a Democrat is President, I try to find serious conservative media like the Wall Street Journal.

Nathan_hale53@reddit
Because the government said so, and threatens to cut funding if they don't. Sorry but sometimes you have to suck up bullshit so you don't shut down. Doesn't mean they're "dogs."

Nathan_hale53@reddit
Its a distraction to try and dismiss the current topic. In and of itself is hypocritical.
AntDracula@reddit
Nope. If you claim to be offended at an action, yet take the action yourself, you are lying about being against the action. You just want to keep the advantage to yourself. It's effectively cheating.
Nathan_hale53@reddit
Cheating? This isn't a vidya game. You can acknowledge and still condemn multiple things. Thing is people say what about when this happened? And usually it's not comparable and even if it is, often it has been acknowledged.
AntDracula@reddit
You can cheat in real life. People do it at jobs, on spouses, and even in conversation.
Which means you don't condemn it. You just want the advantage of doing it while denying anyone else that advantage.
It's literally the same.

Soulless35@reddit
Yeah. The part where the manufacturing companies started laying employees off today really proves your point.
bgovern@reddit
That's a bad take my brother in Christ. Even if there are widespread domestic layoffs related to the tariffs, which I have not seen reported, companies don't, and can't, lay off people the same day some event happens.
Soulless35@reddit
Companies absolutely would lay people off in anticipation of hard times.
Stellantis (formerly Chrysler) laying off 900 employees in US because of tarrifs.
That's only day 1. But yeah keep talking about how great tarrifs are.

InsertaGoodName@reddit
Please show any tariffs comparable to the ones trump recently imposed? Keep in mind it’s 10% base for everyone, with some getting as high as 50% in total.
Sushi-DM@reddit
Look up the reciprocal tariff chart. It will break it down nice and easy for you. But if you can't trust that, the tariffs charged to the US are openly available information. There are a lot. And they are often 50% or higher.
InfusionOfYellow@reddit
11freebird@reddit
My god, had to be a republican to be stupid enough to fall for that shit. Trump is so stupid he did some dumb calculations with trade deficit, nothing to do with tariffs, and you’re even stupider for believing him.
Sushi-DM@reddit
Look. It. Up.
11freebird@reddit
I looked it up you imbecile, that’s how I know it’s bullshit. Search anywhere that isn’t maganews.com and you’ll see that the tariffs on trump’s chart is bullshit. https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2025/04/03/fact-check-are-donald-trumps-tariffs-on-the-eu-really-reciprocal
SalvationSycamore@reddit
The chart Donald showed? Those are not tariff numbers, he just flat out lied.
InsertaGoodName@reddit
You’re a dumbass, those “tariffs” were calculated by dividing exports by imports which no one who isn’t slobbing on the orange knob considers tariffs. Please give me any organization that isn’t part of the administration who agrees with those numbers.
DrEpileptic@reddit
A trade deficit isn’t a tariff. Even dumber than that, oh noooooo! How could they abuse us like this!!??! We’re only the richest country in the world!!! How could they trade with us in a way daddy doesn’t like or understand????!!!? We couldn’t possibly have negotiated these trade deals that benefit us!!!
Sushi-DM@reddit
You are the one currently reeing. You can look up the data at literally any time.
DrEpileptic@reddit
Sushi-DM@reddit
We are not actually the richest country in the world if you care about anyone outside of the top 1%. Our citizenry is getting poorer, sicker, and less educated.
DrEpileptic@reddit
Motherfukcer. Our homeless have computers in their pockets and are obese. What the actual fuck are you talking about?
Sushi-DM@reddit
"Our obese homeless." Yeah, a definite rebuke of the statement that we are poor, sick and uneducated.
DrEpileptic@reddit
Our idea of poverty is so many magnitudes removed from poverty anywhere else in the world that it screams privilege. Stop larping and twisting words to fit your mental gymnastics. We are not a poor country. We are literally sick from the adverse effects of wealth- obesity from excess food. We are largely educated. That’s why we don’t sit on fucking assembly lines making carriages for cars anymore. If you don’t think we’re doing good enough on those metrics, then sure, but what on earth does that have to do with the fact that we pay other countries for cheaper goods than we can produce?
dontkillchicken@reddit
And I’m sure the tariffs will help change that for the better /s
