Question regarding thermal paste on a netbook CPU

I've got a Compaq Presario V2000 netbook that I've been upgrading slowly (upgraded RAM, will switch the old IDE drive to a SSD soon (I have a little MSATA drive and a MSATA to IDE adapter coming in the mail)... part of this upgrade involves eventually swapping the CPU (I plan to upgrade to a Turion 64 ML-40 2.2 GHz processor). The processor as it currently stands has no thermal paste- it's just got a janky aluminum heating. I don't really understand why they didn't add paste, seems that it's pretty important for heat dissipation. I've seen heatsinks straight up fry due to lack of paste... anyway, I'm going off on a tangent... What's your guys' take- should I add some thermal paste when I swap in the new processor? Thanks in advance.
