What CPU - GPU combo you rocking?

Going to upgrade my 10700k & 3070 as it's heavily showing its age while I live stream video games on twitch.
What are y'all rocking rn ? Looking to build a PC for $2300 max!
Is the 9800x3d really that much better for gaming with just 8 cores? Would it work fine for my streaming needs?
Is Nvidia still the way to go for GPUs? I need a GPU that can handle streaming for a few years at my budget lol! Would a 16gb VRAM AMD card be better?!
Thanks for your insight!

9800x3d with 6700xt. If you stick with 1080p you really don't need anything crazy.

Nice, I currently have a 5700x3d and 7900xt in a full size rig, but I also have a 5800x and 7700xt in a Mini ITX 6L travel pc. My plan is to buy the 9070xt Reaper (one day Ill actually find one), which will fit in my ITX build. Pair my 5700x3d with that, move the 5800x and 7700xt into the full size PC which will then be a server, and sell the 7900xt to recoup on the 9070xt.

longtimelurkerfirs@reddit
Everything starts to make sense when you realize the average reddit PC builder has ridiculous standards where anything below 120 fps @ high is considered aging
The average consumer doesn't care about these things. Gives a really unrealistic standard for specs
hUmaNITY-be-free@reddit
Think most of this comes down to people trying to game/stream in 4K then wondering why their barely capable 4K cards are only getting 40-60FPS. Resolution and refresh rate play a huge part, they dangled 4K gaming in front of peoples faces like a carrot on a string, then people rushed to it thinking a 3070-3080 could do it, dial it back to 1080p 240Hz or 1440p 240Hz and any modern to late 2000s GPU would still be plentiful, the exact reason you still see people rocking AND enjoying 1080s/2080s.
donteventryme_@reddit
I like how everyone ignored part where he said “while i live stream video games on twitch”
TheAB_Project@reddit
Absolutely. People recommend going $500 over budget to get good value when all someone wants is to be able to play games on an $800 machine at 1080p.
isolatedzebra@reddit
I don't even reccomend buying a gpu at all right now. That ship sailed last summer
Luckyirishdevil@reddit
Lol.....I have built a whole 1080/1440p rig for $500. Gotta scout for those deals
isolatedzebra@reddit

Sure at 720 p and 1080 p these are good cards.
heftyspork@reddit
Everything starts to make sense when you consider 1080 on high is extremely taxing on games that have come out this year without DLSS turned on. Monster Hunter Wilds is a good looking game for example but the fact that it had DLSS on by default and without its getting sub 100 fps on some mid to high 30 series cards is pretty sad. I don't think games look that much better these days to warrant being required to turn on DLSS as a standard, but that's how they're being made. Hopefully the AI slop gets better. DLSS 4 was a good jump in quality, but some things still just feel off.
LGCJairen@reddit
yep, i've seen people consider am4, esp anything not x3d basically ewaste...it's a lot of wtf.
in my live rotation i have an 8th gen intel, 9th gen, 10th gen, 3 am4, 4 am5's, and 3 lga 1700. i work in tech and do builds as part of two of my jobs so i'm an outlier in volume of systems, but still, nothing wrong some older stuff.
EnlargedChonk@reddit
depends on what you are doing with it. My 6700xt is not much slower than a 3070 but with the release of the VR game "Metro Awakening" it can no longer do everything I ask of it. Even at lowest settings and low resolution scaling it was not smooth enough and causing nausea. And even before that other VR games like into the radius 1 are quite ugly in order to maintain nausea free framerates. The flatscreen games I play are mostly fine at 1440p, with medium settings usually getting the framerates I desire.
I don't really *need* to upgrade, but 9070xt is roughly double the raster performance with much better RT and FSR4 actually looks promising. It would let me play those few VR games I've been holding out on and it will be fun revisiting games I've previously played at medium settings. I've also been really looking forward to Subnautica 2 which is set to go early access this year and this is the most compelling upgrade to put me in a good place for that. It also doesn't help that I originally wanted to get 6800xt but settled for 6700xt due to local stock and prices at the time. So part of me kinda wants to get back in line with my original design goals even if that means upgrading a bit earlier than intended.
coolguy415@reddit
My friend talked me into a 32:9 ultrawide as my monitor was well dying and my other good monitor had died the year prior, so it was time.
Not a 3070, but I realized really quickly that my 3060 wasn't strong enough for the new monitor. That same friend also saved me from spending way too much for a 5070 and ended up getting a 9070xt gigabyte oc model for msrp.
I bought that 3060 as a placeholder for the 4xxx series coming out soon ended up using it for 5 years from end 2020 to march of 2025.
inide@reddit
I upgraded from a 9600k and 2070 in january because I was barely hitting minimum requirements for some games.
3070 is probably only a year or two away from the same fate.
TheAlmightyProo@reddit
The problem was that the 3070/3070ti... I've had both, desktop and laptop (latter adjusted for lower demand to fit) respectively... were flawed. Efficient and speedy sure, but nothing like as up to the demands of their era of gaming at 1440p as, say, the 1070 and 2070 were.
The main cause: that 8Gb cap. Got maxed too often too soon, and not only re the biggest AAA's. I'd expect a somewhat better result at native without RT before falling back on DLSS etc. Especially given the spike in pricing they got in 2021, even against the 3080/90. Even a +2Gb cap and/or slightly wider bus would've made a bigger difference than the small addition might suggest.
floobie@reddit
To answer the OP's question: 5800x + 3070 Ti
To your point: Yeah, the 8gb VRAM is becoming noticeable at 1440p. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson after my old GTX 970.
I'm not planning to upgrade for a while yet - I'll just deal with it. But, for how expensive this fucking thing was, I'm not exactly thrilled about it either.

PupAndy@reddit
Just built someone a PC for roughly this budget, I actually run an identical setup to it also, Ryzen 7 9700X for price to performance, AM5 longevity, etc. 7900 XT 20 GB as it was the best option for the games I play not requiring any Ray tracing performance. If you want ray tracing, a 9070 XT or 5070 TI near retail is probably not the worst buy, optionally a 4070 TI super or 4080 variant sub $800 is not bad either. Like the 3070 ti, the 4070 to suffers from the capped Vram. I have been able to test every card in the 40 series except the 4090 and I would say for 1440p the 70 ti class is a good place to target for the budget you are in. Let me know if you need any help finding GPUs, I know someone willing to ship 7900xts for nearly MSRP that are at a local microcenter.

Because the 20 series cards were the last time that nvidia got an actual generational performance leap instead of a few percentage points of optimisations that then gets boosted by software.

Lol I’m very strongly considering doing the exact same thing! I’m thinking of grabbing the $450 9700x CPU, ram, mobo bundle from Microcenter, and then snag the first 5070ti I can for MSRP, hopefully sometime in the next few weeks. Until then, it’s me and ole reliable 970.
How’s it working out for you?
colonel0sanders@reddit
I got the microcenter bundle too! Safe to say it's a vast improvement over the i5-4690k it replaced.
For GPU I'm probably not going to be able to afford a 50-series, but I've been looking for maybe a used 3080 or 6750xt or something like that for now. All I have monitor-wise is three cheap dell 1080p I picked up at goodwill, so there's no hurry to push 1440 yet.

Key_Professional7179@reddit
It was here that I got recommended the 7800XT over the 4060 Ti. I had the privilege to try the two because my brother got the 4060 Ti. The 7800 XT performs better at 2k without Ray tracing and native AA. But I noticed a lot of micro stutters with the AMD card, compared to the 4060 Ti showing lower frame rates But overall smooth, consistent performance. Idk if it's just me. Your games will look better on the 4060 Ti because you can mix Ray tracing with DLSS. But if you don't care about RT, there are still things to consider before getting the AMD ones. Like how AMD micro stutters. Again, IDK if it's just my card doing it.

Masterzanteka@reddit
I’ve got the little bro version of this build with a 5600x3d and 6750xt and that does all the crushing I need it to do at 1440p. I literally just built it upgrading from my old 1600af/rx570 combo that I bought start of the pandemic in 2020. My last system was certainly showing its age, but to be honest I’m not very snobby when it comes to image quality and thus really wasn’t a horrible gaming experience for myself. Just wanted to upgrade before the tariffs started kicking in and just bought what I could afford to hopefully buy me another 4-5 years of mediocre gaming.
Spent $300 on the CPU, 32gb ram, B550 combo deal, grabbed the rx6750 refurbished from microcenter for $300, SSD for $100, psu for $65, and case for $65. Looking back I could have definitely gotten better value for my money spending about $850 all in, but I’m very happy with the performance I’m getting out of it thus far.
Sold my old rig that I bought for $450 5 years ago for $200 as well, so got back like 40% of what I put into it. So if I can get like $350-$400 for this one in 2029-2030 I’ll be a very happy camper.

3700X + 6900XT. The CPU and most of the rest of the components I bought in 2020, pondering if it's worth upgrading to 5700X3D or just getting a full new build in a few more years, but the processor isn't really keeping the GPU down. I upgraded the GPU from 5600XT to 6900XT (found a great deal on a used water-cooled Sapphire Toxic) at the end of 2023 and I'm very satisfied with it's performance, upgraded since 5600XT could no longer keep up with the games I'm playing. For enthusiasts, a 3070 shows it’s age for sure.
For an average gamer? Well, let me put things in perspective: My gf has a 2060 PC, and she doesn’t even want to upgrade, like at all, nor did she want my PS5 or my 3070 Ti + 5800X3D.

7600X / 4070S.
Before the Ryzen though, I had a 6600K, which was released about 10 years ago. It’s a little crazy to me that a pretty solid combo like that is “heavily showing its age”. Do you sincerely have a reason to need the best performance for streaming? As in, do you make significant income from it or anything? Because I can’t imagine upgrading a perfectly playable setup just to make streaming work at a higher fps. Unless it’s your primary income, who cares about the spectators.

I've been running this exact same setup for a few years now (I got a crazy good deal on an ITX motherboard on eBay right after 12th gen launched) and it runs everything I've thrown at it with aplomb.
My strategy is to upgrade to an upper mid-range part every 5 years or so. My plan had been to hold off another year or two before upgrading my graphics card, but the foolishness of the current US administration prompted me to upgrade early. I'm fortunate that I live within an hour and a half of a Micro Center and have a flexible WFH job, so I was able to snag an MSRP RX 9070 (they were sold out of MSRP XT models when I arrived) on launch day. I might consider an upgrade to a used AM5 platform in a few years, but I'll likely stick with this configuration into the next decade while I ride out our inevitable economic downturn.

7800x3d with 4070TiSuper. I've yet to find anything to even challenge the combo outside of ultra experimental stuff in TWWH3 and Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator. Even then they perform incredibly well. I watch Twitch streams and play Avowed both at 1440p 144Hz without even feeling any indications that the system is working. My temps rarely even hit 70°c. Even at 1440p I'm generating 200+ fps in Avowed and AC Shadows with 1% lows of about 80fpa.
So, I mean, you don't have to go all the way up to the 9800x3d, the 7800x3d will perform whatever you want to perform at cheaper, and still have solid upgrade paths in the future. If you want 4k, I wouldn't advise anything short of a 4090 or higher, but for 1440p the whole 40 series and the 7800/7900 are all great choices (if you can find a good deal rn)

9800x3d and 5070ti went here from an intel 9400F and 1070. Am completely stunned by it, if you’d like to know my two cents, the best CPU’s currently are AMD hands down, for GPU’s if you like the newest tech but don’t have a problem with a higher total price then Nvidia is the way to go, but AMD blows Nvidia out of the water when it comes to price per frame average, and their cards aren’t bad either. AND are extremely close when it comes to software with Nvidia and I can see them completely catching up or even surpassing Nvidia in the next releases!
mrtoothpick@reddit
Yoooo. Literally going from an i5-8600k with a 1070 Ti and in the process of acquiring parts to build a 9800X3D with a 5070 Ti. How insane was the jump for you? I can't wait until I'm finished with it.
ThorSlam@reddit
Man it was completely insane, I couldn’t believe it initially. I just booted up a game that I wouldn’t play before that and just admire the graphics. I still have a hard time comprehending the jump, I always had a cheap but useful PC and this jump blew me away. Playing everything on max settings and the build doesn’t even struggle. Also I really appreciate the DLSS and FG tech I know they have a bad wrap in the community, but my idea of building this PC was to future proof it for a long time. I play on 1080p which the build completely overpowers, in time I will shift to 1440p and stay at that resolution for the time to come. I think you’ll be quite happy, I know I’ve been!
mrtoothpick@reddit
Same. My intent is to future proof as well and I too want to make the jump to 1440p. Preferably OLED too. I built my last computer back in 2018. Hoping I can game on this one for at least 5+ years too.

I absolutely love it. It’s my first PC ever and I built it with my partner rather than buying a prebuilt. I’ve only had laptops and consoles before this. I mostly play League of Legends (I know I know, shit game and it could run on a toaster), but I wanted to build a PC that could run almost anything at high settings in 1080p/ 1440p for a solid few years. So far it’s handled everything I’ve thrown at it with insane quickness and it was relatively affordable to build. It also replaced my ancient 2015 MacBook that was begging for retirement as my regular “adulting stuff” computer.

I just upgraded from a I7-7700k to a Ryzen 7-7800x3D and I’m actually getting good use out of my 2080 super at 1080p. I went from ~40% utility to over 80% utility on the GPU.
My next purchase is going to be a 1440p 120 hertz monitor, and maybe a RX 7800 xtx. Everything cost less than $1000 dollars and I couldn’t be more happy with the performance upgrade.

I actually had a 5080 but it was absolute overkill for what I play and figured someone else would get more use out of it. Totally happy with the 5070 I got at MSRP - I know people think it’s a bad card or a bad price, but it’s quiet, efficient, and potent enough for high refresh rate 1440P and great 4K performance with DLSS.

Right now I'm using a laptop - i7-10750h + 16GB RAM + dead 1660 Ti (got a faulty VRAM chip and artifacts like crazy - I'm using it only with the iGPU). I have been gaming on my brother's PC - i5-14400f + 16GB + Intel B580, it's been great at 1080p gaming at maxed out settings, with no issues whatsoever. I plan on building a PC later this year, and I'll go full AMD: R7 7700/equivalent + 32GB + 7900 XT/9070 XT (whichever I'll be able to find a deal for). I wanted a CPU that I wouldn't need to change any time soon. My previous desktop PC lasted a bit over ten years.
GPUs are a lot easier to replace, just take old one out and pop new one in.

RX 6750 XT was the most optimal frames per currency choice for me for 1080p.
