May i ask about the hierarchy of fighter planes, as interpreted by top gun maverick?

Ok...
So they flew F-18s
They apparently could not win in aerial combat against the enemies planes? Is the F18 somehow uncompetitive with the other fighters?
And then they get in a 30 year old F14 and rooster asks if they can outrun them? To which he says, not their missiles and guns?
Is this implying in some way that the F14 was potentially faster than the "5th gen fighter" on any level? While the F18 was not even considered for the job?
Maybe these aspects of the movie were entirely wrong, or was the f14 ahead of its time and the f18 somehow shit?
