Did you guys ever do a time capsule in school? Was it ever recovered?

My social studies class did one in either 1992 or 93. It was buried deep in the ground next to our classroom with little fanfare but I don't know if it was every dug up. My contribution was a TV guide from that week which everyone agreed was a smart addition if could hold up to the elements of time.

Yes. I have no ideas what happened to it.

We buried one when I was in 6th grade. The spot we buried it is a Menard's parking lot now. In 20 years that Menard's will probably be long gone, replaced by a mixed-use development or something. Then some person who lived there will come back to show their kids where they grew up and they'll find an Amazon™ drone hub or a dark factory, where robots make self-driving cars without any human supervision or payroll overhead. Then when people stop leaving their homes altogether that'll close, too, and they'll build a building just to give the fully-automated construction robots something to do so one of the three trillionaires who own everything and everyone in the country can move a few million dollars from one shell corporation to another. And the construction robots will keep building useless buildings, and the demolition robots will keep demolishing them, and this will continue until the last one seizes up, and there won't be anyone left who knows how to fix them or make new ones, or even how to read, because they've all been turned into slaves who only know how to consume. And finally society will collapse completely, and for a few generations the handful of humans who are left will remember what it was to live like human beings before they eventually die, and humanity's light will be extinguished from the universe forever. And it will be as though we never existed.

I throw things out there sometimes. Sometimes people don't understand where I'm coming from, but once in a while they do.

Don't get me wrong, I love thy way your mind works. It was good!

You didn't answer the question...

If it wasn't ground to pieces when they laid the bed for the parking lot, it will probably remain buried and lost.

Class of 2000 did one. Let's hope the class of 2050 likes Backstreet Boys!

Backstreet's back....ALRIGHT!!

In 8th grade I was supposed to do one. My town was building one of those awesome wooden castle playgrounds and did a fundraiser where they sold bricks that had a personalized message engraved in it and they made the walkway to the playground out of those bricks.
My parents offered to go halves on a brick with me and I could choose what it said so I decided it would say "Time Capsule Buried here" and a date to open it (i forget the date). My father was on the construction crew and was ready to make sure that we buried the capsule before the walkway went in.
Well I'm a huge procrastinator and never made the time capsule. My old man is forgetful and forgot we even did the brick. In the end the brick became part of the walkway but there was never a time capsule under it.
The playground was torn down like 10 years ago along with the walkway and the bricks - people were allowed to come and get their brick back. I've wondered a few times if anyone ever tried looking for the non-existent capsule.

Yes. It will be opened in 2087 and I will be long dead.

We did one in 93. It hasn't been opened yet, I think they are doing it in 2030 or something. My grade put a speak and spell, and a mini super-soaker, in it.

Not the school I attended but the elementary that’s local to me now just celebrated 50 years by digging up the capsule from their first year. They made a big deal and invited all alumni, community, the local news, etc.
They probably should have checked the capsule first because they dug it up live and it was just soggy, indistinguishable clumps of matter and mud. I was sad for everyone who showed up but I bet they’re glad they all got together anyway

We did one in kindergarten, but then they built a building on top of it so I don't think I'm ever gonna see that Troll doll again.

I have no recollection.

I did one in 5th grade, but he escaped.

Yes in second grade my teacher was really excited about the fact that our class would be graduating highschool in the year 2000. I don't remember where it was buried, or what was in it. The elementary school has been torn down.

Our middle school English teacher invited us to write letters to ourselves “30 years from now” and he would deliver them to us at the best address that we put on the envelope. Of course I moved and never got my letter but I worked really hard on it and put a lot of pictures in it. I wish I could get it back.

We did one when I was in 2nd grade, 1989. I have no idea if they ever dug it up. I contributed wood from a baseball bat because I thought they would transition to aluminum at the MLB level.
JumboThornton@reddit
My school didn’t but my high school boyfriend and I did one ourselves that included notes and mementos and a VHS tape that we recorded in the 90s but never watched. We buried it in the woods in a local park and even though we both remember where we buried it, we could not find it later and as far as I know it has never been found. I always wondered if someone maybe there was a really bad storm that washed it away. That park did have mudslides sometimes.

Yes! And here it is.

I just buried one under my pool deck. Thought it would be a cool exercise for my kids now — and maybe when they redo the pool deck when I’m dead they’ll have a neat little piece of 2023.

We did one in 5th grade and were supposed to open it up in 2000, senior year. We all filled out questionnaires about our favorites in pop culture, current news events we were aware of, best friends, favorite pastimes, etc. Kids were even invited to bring an item they thought was relevant at the time and most brought one of their favorite possessions. I remember a Troll doll among other things lol. Anyway, I was glad I did not offer up any of my preciouses because the teacher moved away, forgot about the capsule and none of us seemed to remember where she buried it. Oh well, it'll be a cool find for someone one day.
itadapeezas@reddit
Oh my goodness yes! We did one in 1st grade. We buried it next to a tree we planted. I have no idea if it was dug up or not but now I wanna find out.
Roscoe_P_Trolltrain@reddit
You better go dig it up!

My grade school opened one when they tore down the old elementary school. I think it was 1915 to 1990. But I don't remember ever doing a new one.
