NYC Based Reserve

Just got my first regional job and fully expecting to get NYC whether I want it or not. I’m looking at staying with family who lives in NY (Long Island) while on reserve until I can transfer to a base I can afford housing. They live a 55min drive from the airports and I believe the callout is 2.5 hours. Is that enough time to drive from where I’m staying to get to the gate? Not sure how long it takes to get to employee parking, through security, and to the gate so I’m worried it might be tight.
Would I be better off driving in everyday to sit reserve? The only issue is my airline serves both LGA and JFK so I don’t know which one I’d get called for. Any suggestions are appreciated. I want to make it as good as I can my few months there.

I see people here who haven’t ever sat reserve in NYC giving advice. Honestly 55 mins is probably just fine. As long as you have a bag packed and ready to go, you’ll be ok. Don’t be far from your stuff and learn how to get dressed quickly. But even with that taking a half hour you’re giving yourself an hour buffer.

How is the employee parking situation at JFK and LGA? I think my main concern would be finding a spot and getting through security in time after the drive.
I’m mainly concerned about my probationary period. Would it be a bad idea to drive into LGA and sit there waiting for a call and take an uber over to JFK if my call was for there instead? I don’t want to risk anything starting out. I’m coming from a small town so I’m not used to NYC environments at all.

I was commuter who sat in a crashpad and took public transit but I remember the parking wasn’t too bad. Off site at JFK for sure, and then a shuttle in. Probably similar for LGA but don’t quote me. Can’t remember the parking situation being a huge deal for anyone. Most of the time someone was late it was traffic, not the parking situation.
Guessing you are at endeavor? Security at T4 at JFK and T3 at LGA is going to take you five minutes or less. Plan on 10-15 minutes to walk to gate at the longest.
Don’t drive in and do what is essentially ready reserve. Short call already sucks, don’t do that to yourself. Especially because if you uber to JFK/LGA you’re getting returned to the airport you started your trip at most of the time. So in most cases (not all) you’re just going to pay another 50-70 bucks to uber back to your car. Not worth it.

Yes, it would be for Endeavor. Thank you for the input. I heard they are getting rid of KCM so I expect that would add to the security time?
GopherState@reddit
None of us know what that whole process will look like post KCM. If takes a lot more time than getting randomed at KCM then the program is will already be a total failure.

The worst rumor I’ve heard so far is that it will only be for manifested crew. So commuters will have to go to the normal line.
God I hope that rumor is false.

Yes you are overthinking it. Dont do that. You will be fine. You cannot drive in everyday unless you hate yourself.

If you’re 55 mins away; you’re fine. I’m a former 9E NYC guy and I lived just over an hour on public transit from LGA and about the same from JFK. Never had an issue. Have your bag prepacked and uniform ready during your reserve block and you won’t have to worry about it. Also just a pointer: check which airport you’re reporting to 3 times…most of us made that mistake once.

Kew Gardens is central between LGA and JFK.
Cheap crashpads, nice people, pretty good food. JFK the Q10 bus takes you straight to the airport. LGA a bit more tricky, train to the Q70(or at least that used to be the route) or just use a local cheap cash only KewGardens Cab service. (Used to be KewCab). I stayed based there longer than I expected due to wayyy better seniority/schedules. Good luck.

What are your reserve rules? Are you covering multiple NYC airports? Too many questions. But 55 minutes should be fine.
SupportGold7583@reddit
I wouldn’t chance it bro. Say it takes you like 20-30 minutes to get ready and stuff that leaves like 1 hour to spare with your 55 minute drive (this is nyc keep in mind) and it’s not a good idea to risk reliability your first year. I’d look for closer options which basically guarantee you making show time.
I used to have a Crashpad 5 minutes from the airport so I absolutely knew I’d make it everytime

Would driving in and sitting at LGA on my reserve days be a bad option? I could get a uber to JFK if I were to get a call there (probably would be faster than driving myself and getting parked).
SupportGold7583@reddit
I mean you could but that absolutely sucks. I can barely last a 3 hour sit without getting bored out of my mind. Not sure how long your reserve periods are but my company it’s 12 hours.
itsxxcommanderxx@reddit (OP)
How is the parking situation?
I can’t say it’s an ideal option but having a home to stay at for free and only being for a few months makes me strongly consider it.

No clue I’m not NYC based but I’ve been in nyc traffic. Off probation I’d probably do it, on it probably wouldn’t chance it. Your decision not mine
itsxxcommanderxx@reddit (OP)
I’ll probably just drive into one of them daily and sit and uber to the other one if needed. Sucks, but like you said, I don’t want to chance anything on the probation period.
hawker1172@reddit
What are you going on an on about? You are saying you have a 55 minute drive with a 2.5 hour callout. Be ready to go ish and you have almost an hour to spare!?

I feel for you, regional reserve in NYC sounds like the 9th circle of hell.
chirz2792@reddit
It is.
BerMalBerIst@reddit
Find out what your reserve rules are and just make sure you're legal. At most (all probably?) majors with a codomicile you just have to be within the legal callout for ONE of the airports (LGA OR JFK in your case). Hopefully that's the same at your regional too - they should realize that you can't be equidistant from both airports at all times of day. If they call you with an assignment for the farther airport, just tell them how long it'll take you to get there (don't lie).
GopherState@reddit
While a nice idea, pretty sure OP is at Endeavor and the callout is the same for both airports. They expect you to be within 2 and a half hours of both airports for the entirety of your reserve
BerMalBerIst@reddit
Ah well that sucks. I guess it'll depend how understanding they are of traffic then...
