How does this even happen?

Not what I wanted to see on my last load for the night.

They do just get old and fall apart sometimes. I had this happen a couple moths ago. The plastic was cloudy and I couldn’t see the oil level in the one hub so I popped the rubber plug out to check it. Oil level was fine but the plastic crumbled when I put the plug back in. Being thorough cost me 20 minutes replacing the hub cap.
I’m mostly pulling lowbeds and flats, and sometimes people like to step on them to climb on to the trailer.
At least you caught it before your hub burned up and came off the trailer going down the road.

Those caps aren't indestructible or anything. Shit happens. I've even seen brand new caps blow off because the shop didn't properly screw it back on. Just be glad you caught it now before your wheel was burning up.

Either it hit something or maybe pressure inside caused it to crack and break. I even found a shard of the cap inside. Looks like most of the grease is gone too. Just a bummer since the trailer was only going 25 miles away for the delivery. Thems the breaks I guess.
