Your rudeness isn’t necessary. As someone who’s just starting out. It’s important for me to be observant incase I run in to similar, or the exact same issue…calm down.
I know you didn't do this so justed worded for new drivers. Getting out to visibly check trailer is a good practice but if your not going to that well don't just floor it when your backing up. Should feel that trailer push the fith down flat if you don't something is not right.
I was told it was high hooked and the kingpin tilted the fifth wheel up. They kept going and the bottom of the fifth wheel rammed the crossmember. The front of the reefer was all busted up too.
The funny thing is that OPs trailer looks like it's been that way for a while. Long enough for the guy who originally destroyed it to wreak a lot more carnage elsewhere.
He gets a gold star for actually putting his mug under there and checking the pin.
Since I'm one of the guys who gets asked to vac out a trailer when someone torpedo's a vessel, I'm kind of jaded myself.
Had one with a 10' slice in the side whistle like a teakettle when a hopper ran empty. That was convenient. 😂
Is that a weld on the locking jaws ? Bent cross member is uncool, but it will hold, but I'm pretty sure a busted locking bar is a non-repairable item, it needs to be completely replaced. Every bump on the road and every time you brake will be working on that weld and if it fails you're gonna have a real bad time.
No. It’s a Holland fifth wheel. The jaws meet in the middle with a small space in between which is what you’re seeing. It has a bolt on the front telling you if it’s completely locked.
Yes. I have done so, but only after documenting everything with your collision team (was at a d&h customer and the scrapes on the bent crossbeam were shiny so it was most likely them or the washout company just up the road) so the shop can schedule it in for a new crossbar.
Pass_Me_That_Phone@reddit
Still pretty new to this, are you referring to the cracks?
RuneScape420Homie@reddit
The giant fucking holes in the cross members.

If you don’t have thick skin this job is going to suck. Secondly if swearing offends you then maybe consider a different line of work.
Pass_Me_That_Phone@reddit
I don’t need thick skin because I don’t have to tolerate anyone’s bullshit lol. But if you say so…
fuchai2015@reddit
noone talking about what looks like a broken locking jaw??
w3stvirginia@reddit (OP)
It’s not broken. It’s a Holland Twin Lock. It’s normal to have a small gap there.
fuchai2015@reddit
Ah nice never seen that before

TinkerDwarf@reddit
Looks like someone dropped it and had a forklift pick it back up only to have the forks go a bit deep. Needs fixed. Wouldn't max weight till it is.

Billy_Bigrigger@reddit
Yeah, he sent it full bunny 🐰
Takes five seconds to hit two steps and verify trailer height before you go under.
I'd run it, but it would be pointed out before I leave. The crossmember isn't broken.
COATHANGER_ABORTIONS@reddit
Yeah, what's ten seconds compared to high hooking? It's stupid to NOT get out and check.
1morepl8@reddit
You can't look at your tire and the trailer and know if it's too high?......
Billy_Bigrigger@reddit
I run about 5 different tank brands with unique fender and plate heights. If I can push my half fenders down when I bump the plate I'm good.
Anything else, I get out and check.
We've had guys punch frame rails clean through a hopper cone..
I'm carefully competent. It's my dime if I fuck something up.
1morepl8@reddit
Fair. Honestly, the Reddit pearl clutching just gets me tilted and snarky lol.

Jaded is just a measurement of time in this industry lol. Then again I came back to it.
COATHANGER_ABORTIONS@reddit
You can't spare ten seconds?
1morepl8@reddit
I got 2 kids and 14 drivers. Nope.
Billy_Bigrigger@reddit
So, you have 16 kids. 😎
1morepl8@reddit
Was waiting for someone to get there 😂.
Aggressive_Secret290@reddit
And an undersized brain.
1morepl8@reddit
It's really is pretty painful being competent. I'm sure you wouldn't understand.

oh hell nah

If two or more consecutive cross members are damaged then it’s out of service.
Ges613@reddit
As with most the time when someone asks this, regardless of any visible violations, dispatch says, "Fuck it. Send it!"
RuneScape420Homie@reddit
Fuckkkkkk nnnnnoooooooo
Independent-Fun8926@reddit
No. I’ve refused to run trailers with broken, bent, or cracked crossmembers before. Not worth my license

No, SAF holland locks come in from both sides.

If that's the only damage sure why not?
Just document it and send to whomever matters to avoid blame.
Pluperfectt@reddit
^ This is the way ! ^
Riyeko@reddit
According to the book, cross members can't be broken. These look to have holes in them
I would personally email safety and ask.
And get better pics
StuckCanuck42069@reddit
I would not. Bent crossmember is a no go for me. Mind you, my loads are always heavy and maxing out the 80k. I ain’t taking this load, dispatch.
WavyMerica@reddit
Absolutely not

It's why I don't look under there.
