Did a buy the wrong PSU?

Building a PC for the GF and I am waiting for the parts to be delivered. I put them in pcpartspicker and it said they were compatible, but reading through others builds I am questioning if my 650 watt PSU is enough, since others are going with larger PSUs
The build consists of
Ryzen 5 9600x
B850 Mobo
2 x 16 GB ram
RX 6700 xt 12GB
Arctic liquid 3 cooler
MSI 650 watt gold PSU

Also is the cooler overkill? I paid $85 for it after tax.

your build is lopsided

Why is that?
LemonOwl_@reddit
almost everything is mid-high end and you have a low-mid gpu and low end psu
GolemancerVekk@reddit
I wouldn't call MSI A-GL "low end", it's tier B. They can get tier A for the same money and they should, but the MSI is a good PSU.

Yeah I may have messed up with the PSU. I got the CPU for a decent price at $160 and built off that. I got the GPU for $350 all the other GPUs were way more. She doesn't need super high end resolution, so maybe in the future she can upgrade. I was able to get a good deal on the cooler, looks like I didn't need to though, I guess I can return and get a cheaper one for about $40 less.

$350 is 6800xt prices

I couldn't find any for that price. Used 6700xts were $300 or more.
LemonOwl_@reddit
hell, a month ago I saw a 6900xt for $400 on jawa

Damn. Looks like I bought at the wrong time. She'll be happy with it though. She's been using my old Alienware laptop with a 1060 in it trying to play once human and it crashes on her constantly. Hoping the new build works better.

650W PSU is fine for your PC. But you should replace the MSI with an ADATA XPG Core Reactor II 650W, it's a much better PSU with 10 year warranty for the same price.
RyleighGamesDev@reddit
650W will be fine. Plenty of spare wiggle room there.
King_Zilant@reddit
I agree, although many will say otherwise, 650 is safe, most of the time even in heavy gaming, gpu and cpu power doesn't max out anyway, a psu with more headroom is always better but this is fine.
Stargate_1@reddit
huh? GPU power ideally always maxes out, ESPECIALLY during heavy gaming.
Carnildo@reddit
GPU utilization maxes out, but maxing out power requires tasks specifically designed to exercise every single circuit at the same time. That's something you usually only see in stress-test benchmarks.
Stargate_1@reddit
Not really? My GPU pulls 320 Watts at full load, RT or not. Full load just means more juice is left for less components. The power consumption isnexactly the same, whether I play Minecraft with shaders or Cyberpunk with RT (Minecraft is unable to utilize RT-related Hardware)
dulun18@reddit
your system wattage usage is approx 420W.. so your 650W will be fine
unless you upgrade the CPU and GPU to something more power hungry..
Zaldekkerine@reddit
Yes. Unless you're dead set on the aesthetics of a liquid cooler, something like the Peerless Assassin would be a better option.

Thanks. I may return and get what you suggested. It is for her birthday present, so I bought most of the parts in one day to get it completed.

650w is perfectly fine for your build, but in the US good 750w-850w PSUs can be found in the $80-$100 range. Those would give a bit more room for a future GPU upgrade.
CWLness@reddit
Rule of thumb is 100-200W headroom. Your partpicker shows estimated consumption of 419W so your extra 231W headroom fits just right.
If you want to upgrade parts later on, then this may become an issue
deliriousgrinch@reddit
The psu should be fine. Remember that psus can last 10+ years, and most people want to upgrade their system over time. You don't want to keep upgrading a psu so they will buy a bigger one for when they eventually need it. Even if you don't want to upgrade, having too much power isn't a thing. Not enough power and your system doesn't start.
And yes, an aio for that build is overkill. If your cpu comes with a cooler that should be fine. If not, I always recommend the pearless assassin. It's cheap and will cool all but the most high end cpus.
Wooshio@reddit
650W is plenty for this system, 9600X is only a 65W TDP CPU which makes a big difference here. You could have gone with more wattage sure to be safer if you plan on upgrading the GPU in a couple of years, but I wouldn't worry about it. And yes Arctic LQ III is definitely overkill for 9600X, because like I said earlier it's a 65W CPU, but you got a very good price on it so whatever.
