Install a whole house surge protector (sub $200 to protect appliances)

If you head over to r/frugal there is a post about how $180 saved a homeowner money.
I wasn’t aware that you could install a whole house surge protector, but folks in the r/frugal thread have shared ample tips and success stories.
The idea is spend $200 or less and install a whole house surge protector so that in the event of lightning strike, transformer surge or main electricity wires being damaged your home is protected.
Stoves, ovens, TVs, washers, dryers, dishwashers, sump pumps, well pumps, computers, etc are all items that can be destroyed by sudden power surges.
It looks like this is a worthy $200 prep to consider.

Sounds worth it to me. I’d look at some reviews first. Make sure it’s a good one. Also check to see if it has a warranty. For expensive devices, I try to buy surge protectors that have a warranty for things that would be destroyed if it fails.

Indeed. I also think having a qualified electrician to install would be a good choice. Someone bonded and insured. :)

Actually something like a whole house protector I wouldn't be surprised if their warranty requires it to have been installed by a licensed electrician.

My energy provider will install one for $10/mo. But there’s a lot they won’t cover.
