What's caused the most mess after accidentally leaving stuff in your pockets before washing?

I accidentally left a whole unopened toffee crisp in my pocket before loading the washing machine and was surprised how resilient the cereal bits and toffee was when it had finished. Previously a full babies nappy made the worst mess and a packet of screws pretty much wrote off one of our old machines. Could this be the next series of 'will it fry?' by that Scottish bloke on YouTube?

^(What is this?)

The kids left a crab in the pocket of swimming trunks. The crab disintegrated in the dryer and cooked it self in little fragments through the drum and filters. It stink for weeks.

Jesus fucking Christ. That dryer would be going outside haha
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
That wins so far! Can’t imagine the stench. Back in the 90s I worked in nightclubs and it was cut-throat competition to have the busiest place. One of the tactics was sending people in with fish to hide behind their radiators 😆
Otherwise_Cut_8542@reddit
I just washed 100 pages of instruction manual with the black fabric for my kids car seat. It was hidden in a pocket inside the backrest fabric.
6 hours of tumble drying removed the paper from the rest of the items but the car seat fabric is still completely plastered in a paper crust.

Ouch.

I had a snazzy neon yellow North Face baseball cap I’d found at a festival and used for 7 years (ensuring that I never got lost). I put it through a hot wash and tumble dry in a launderette in Barcelona, not understanding quite how much it would get nuked.
The heat melted the logo on three shirts and the plastic press studs on the baseball cap. All of my clothes were covered in a white plastic sludge and I had to do my best with peeling lil’ bits off in the sink afterwards. The cap was a goner. The Spanish abuelas were not impressed with me.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Oh dear! I remember as a kid having some branded t shirt with a print on the front and it being destroyed by my mum. We didn’t read wash labels much !
joshii87@reddit
I’m 37 and my mum still does this. Everything in the same drum at 40° 😅
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Yep! Boil everything to death and get only one wear out of it at its original size!
_98_98_@reddit
Any kind of tissue/paper 😩
Martipar@reddit
Toilet paper. A partial roll ended up in my washing pile, one of my jumpers was covered for a long time. I washed it twice alone, but after leaving it a while to dry and brushing it I tried washing it as apart of a normal load and the other clothes helped remove the last of it.
MDK1980@reddit
Yep, a tissue left in a hoodie pocket becomes confetti that takes hours to get out.
Sufficient-Ball-6681@reddit
This! The amount of clothes I’ve ruined by doing it. You think I’d learn but I don’t
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Tissues are the absolute worst. No amount of flapping and brushing gets that stuff off, especially dark colours!
Imtryingforheckssake@reddit
Lint roller?
Izwe@reddit
Literally just had to put some "lights" back in the wash 20 minutes go because someone left a pen in their clothes and almost everything has black ink stains on them. I hope they come out clean, because there's a limited-edition hoodie in there that someone will not want stains on.

One of the kids threw up in a spectacular fashion in the middle of the night. I stripped the bedding and was cleaning up the poorly child and asked my husband to wash the sheets.
Unfortunately he didn’t shake or scrape off the sick first so I opened the washing machine to find sheets that had been washed with half digested dinner from the night before 🤮

I left a pack of chewing gum in my pockets and then washed / dried my trousers.
What an absolute clusterfuck that was. I just binned the jogging bottoms - they were ruined.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Mint or juicyfruit?
difficult_Person_666@reddit
Where the F can you find Juicy Fruit from? I can’t remember the last time I saw them “in the wild”.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Fuck knows. I never buy gum and it was just a throwback memory from when I was old enough to be allowed to have it!
Biggurlpretender@reddit
Funny, just today I fetched a whole unopened packet of extra gum out of my washer. It didn’t open and just went straight in the bin
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Not even tempted to try it? I would have. I like to disgust people by pretending to find a sweet in my pocket covered in fluff and just picking the fluff off to eat it. I set it up a bit beforehand obviously. 🤣

Not a pocket but when my oldest child was a baby a nappy ended up in with the washing. My god there was giant blobs of what ever it is in nappies that soak up wee because they were so saturated, they were also stuck to every bit of clothing that was in the machine and also inside the machine as well. Had to wash the machine itself a few times to get rid of it all, luckily I didn’t kill the machine
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
You were lucky!
rev-fr-john@reddit
A screwdriver, despite witnessing the chaos caused by a drill bit left in my dads pocket when I was a kid, I still managed to leave a screwdriver in a shirt pocket, we have a whirlpool top loading machine and inevitably the screwdriver worked it's way through a hole in the drum and eventually got a hold on the outer plastic bucket thing and ripped a 4 inch long hole in it, luckily it's in the bathroom on a wet floor, unfortunately you wouldn't normally dump that amount of water on the floor in a few seconds, so it kind of escaped into the kitchen, luckily it immediately left the kitchen in favour of the wooden living room floor, unfortunately we didn't notice any of this for some time. dirty water with detergent in it absolutely destroys wooden floors but my immediate concern was the broken washing machine, so I took it apart and quickly discovered the problem and made a few phone calls, the part is available and not expensive but it is in Mexico, which even by my standards is a bit of a treck.
The immediate solution was to melt some plastic from an oil can into, onto and around the hole, bizarrely it's still holding 4 weeks later, hopefully it'll last longer than it's going to take Pedro to paddle here in the plastic bucket thing.
The sitting room floor is still fucked.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Quite the story!
rev-fr-john@reddit
I'll be posting Pedro's story if he ever gets here.

My work trousers have a convenient slot for a pen on the leg… fortunately they are black as is the pen but if it was any other colour I’m sure it would make a right mess.
Tissues I find make the most mess
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Nothing worst than a blue biro in your white shirt pocket. Glad you survived the black on black scenario (why did that sound like a porn reference?).
thethirdbar@reddit
My husband left a massive allen key in his pocket once and that's how we ended up with a new washer.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
The irony of tools for fixing stuff, actually breaking stuff is not lost!
painful_butterflies@reddit
Not washing, but in the tumble dryer. One of the kids, when much younger, decided to add a sharpie to the tumble dryer mid cycle - we didn't notice - so the clothes that were clean, were now covered in sharpie which then got cooked in. Tumble dryer was coated in ink too.
Also, hot sharpie ink STINKS!
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Mmmmmm chemicals. I remember kids at school sniffing markers for the high.
WanderWomble@reddit
A full pot of slime. It ruined the washer and the school uniform. Wasn't happy because I don't let them have slime in the house- he won it as a prize at school.
Did a nappy too while in the newborn sleep deprived phase. Luckily I had a wet/dry vac which got rid of most of it.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
I can imagine all the colouring and chemicals in that stuff causing havoc!
Important_Lychee6925@reddit
Not me, but my mate left his full party bag (ifykyk) in his jean pocket after a night out and his girlfriend put it the wash.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Ah gutted. I can just imagine the disappointment. Almost as bad as dropping it in the toilet on a night out!
BobBobBobBobBobDave@reddit
Yeah, having accidentally washed a dirty nappy once, I can't Imagine much worse.
SeriousWait5520@reddit
Oh lordy
Valuable-Fork-2211@reddit
Came here to say that, I've no idea how it ended up in the wash but my god, the mess and resulting cleanup were way beyond anything else I've ever accidentally washed.
r_keel_esq@reddit
One morning, my pal greeted me with the words "I tumble-dried my bank card again"
I paused before responding "Again?"
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Yeah I’ve done that too. Still worked though!
carl84@reddit
This song really encapsulates the pain of leaving something in your pocket before putting it in the wash
IcyPuffin@reddit
Not in my pockets, but i once forgot to remove one of those bed pads you use when kids are learning to go without nappies. Completely forgot it was there when I went to wash the sheets.
Took out the sheets and it looked like it had been snowing. The little clumps of whatever it was filled with went everywhere. That's was fun to clear up.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Ah man, same as nappies. Great at soaking up liquid but then you spin it a million times and oversoak it and it just turns to a jelly like snow!
chuill@reddit
Wood shavings from the guinea pig cage. Kids had been playing with the piggies on a blanket and put the blanket in the wash. Utter mess.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Mmmm free pot pourri though !
wardyms@reddit
Kids stickers. Our washing machine is full of stickers on the drum because of this.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Why do we let them have them?! I seem to collect them on my socks mainly.
BobBobBobBobBobDave@reddit
It is a trade off with us. Stickers in return for eating vegetables and not having tantrums.
I used to think I wouldn't negotiate with terrorists.
difficult_Person_666@reddit
Hahaha… i swear my neighbours kids are plotting to take over the world somehow with a lot of the shxt they get up to, but I can’t really say anything because I was probably a lot worse, but for the most part they are little sweethearts but their mum is always on 24/7 stress alert bless her x
wardyms@reddit
Because they really seem to work to get them to not shit in their pants or keep their socks on in the car :)
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
🤣 if only it worked on employees
BlueNexusItemX@reddit
I have a washing machine emotional mess story
Pokéwalker
Thought I lost it as a kid and searched for it on and off for ages turns out jt ended up going through the wash and broke
RIP to whatever Pokémon was stored on there (for some reason I think it was a Rapidash)
DurhamOx@reddit
Definitely toilet paper or kitchen roll. Absolutely disgusting stuff, especially when you know someone else has blown their nose on it
ChaosGoW@reddit
I left my bank card in my pocket. Went through the wash and dryer. Came out very warped and I couldn't use a cash point for a while lol
jesuseatsbees@reddit
A pine cone. Not only did it shred to bits but all the bugs living inside it got stuck to the washing.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Mmm bet it smelt good tho. Like being in a woodworking shop on delivery day.
GlitchingGecko@reddit
not a pocket, but i once accidentally washed a blanket with a rawhide dog chew wrapped in it.
It melted to the blanket and acted like glue. Had to bin the blanket.
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit (OP)
Reminds me of the saying 'stuck like shit to a blanket'.
