What's a car you love the look of, but is trash otherwise?

I loved the look of the old Ford probes, but they werent great otherwise
djg88x@reddit
Alfa Romeo 4C is 1000/10 in looks but they drive like fucking trash if you try to push them anywhere close to a limit
Volvo C30 Polestar is another car that is an absolute stunner but ultimately a parts bin mashup of understeery, uncommunicative sadness
Bright_Crazy1015@reddit
8c the pinnacle of good looks bad car.
djg88x@reddit
I've never driven an 8C so I can't comment on that, but my experience driving the 4C on a tight canyon road in Malibu was one of tramlining and terminal understeer.
Porshuh@reddit
Don’t floor a mid engine car on the way out of a corner then.
djg88x@reddit
outside of the 4C I've driven a multitude of mid-engine cars — 2 Elises, 3 MR2s, an Evora, and 4 Boxster/Caymans (including the 981S that I own) — and none of them have behaved as badly as the 4C. Literally all it does is plow and refuse to rotate if you try to push it even a little bit.
Porshuh@reddit
Skill issue, the one I drove was happy to yaw on light throttle. It liked a little bit of trail braking on the way into a corner.
djg88x@reddit
it's almost as if these were all inconsistently set up by Alfa, because i'm not the only one who's ever criticized it for massive understeer, and you're not the only one to praise its handling
Porshuh@reddit
That's hardly a cause to slander a car as "fucking trash" if that's what you think. But I think they drive well, so your motivations aren't my business.
Bright_Crazy1015@reddit
That sucks to hear about the Polestar btw. I wanted those to be great honest cars that dyno at the wheel for their claimed performance numbers and a decent geometry to work on a skidpad.
Sounds more like the 90's Taurus SHO's than a Euro tuner. The SHO will do 140mph, and even stop from there, but won't do it twice in a row.
Understeer city, mushy when you do get the nose pointed in the right direction, and that's assuming you understand how to transfer the weight to the front wheels to turn in with the brakes.
djg88x@reddit
Engine is an absolute banger, but the gearbox feels like rowing a spoon through cake batter, clutch feels like stepping on a dog turd in the middle of the night, a Miata upside down on its roof would have more steering feel, and just like the 4C it's set up for terminal understeer.
All of those characteristics could all be ignored in a normal economy car, but given the nature of it having been marketed as a hot hatch, it left such a real sour taste in my mouth when it didn't perform like one.
VariousClaim3610@reddit
All Alfa’s really - I love the looks and the heritage but who can deal with the reliability issues
djg88x@reddit
Nah, 2019 and newer Giulias have been great. Turbo motors require a little more fastidious maintenance, and they are more labor-intensive, but they don't really go wrong unless you let them sit for long periods of time.
silbergeistlein@reddit
I attempted to recommend the Giulia to my sister in law until I saw the freight train of recalls that were associated with it. She got an M4 CS instead. I’m meh, but she’s happy.
djg88x@reddit
there's a reason i specified 2019 and newer. early models had a lot of teething issues and those were the ones the magazines had go into limp mode on the highway and everything with. they were fixed by 2019 and have been fine since. but Giulia QVs are expensive to maintain. They need an accessory drive belt every \~40k miles and that's a $3k job (maybe more, depending on where you live) with the entire front end of the car coming off in order to get to it. They did not package these things for serviceability.
silbergeistlein@reddit
Not only did they not package them for serviceability, they packaged a performance sedan that seems to be a bother instead of a joy. My separate comment from this one, they’re absolutely gorgeous cars, in my opinion (and your opinion as well I suspect), but I’d never want to own one.
djg88x@reddit
I took the money that could've bought a Giulia QV and spent it on a 2.0T Giulia and a 2015 Boxster S instead
silbergeistlein@reddit
I think the Boxster S was a good decision. Ha. Just joshing. Have a good evening sir/ma’am.
SailingSpark@reddit
That is part of the mystique of driving any Italian car.
OutlandishnessOk5549@reddit
Plymouth prowler.
Those things NEEDED a V8
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
It was a case of right car, wrong time. The fact of the matter was that it would’ve made much more of a statement with a V8, but Chrysler didn’t have a suitable one at the time. The contemporary LA-series V8 was heavy and didn’t make much power, and we were years off from the modern HEMI’s debut.
Obviously other engines physically fit, and plenty of people have done it, but without regard to silly production-car concerns like safety, production procedures, or serviceability.
The V6 that went into car was the best option at the time, within Chrysler. But if it had come five or six years later and been given the HEMI, it would be so much more beloved. Or, hell, if it had been just a bit later and Chrysler had been able to take advantage of Daimler-Benz, as it did with the subsequent Crossfire, by using a Mercedes-Benz V8.

CognitiveRedaction@reddit
Fisker Karma was gorgeous...but that drivetrain is trash. A dream project to me would be to get one, make it a 2 door, and have a twin turbo 6 or 8 in it. Black the car out and it looks like something a supervillain would drive.
pm-me-racecars@reddit
I saw one irl once, and at first I thought it was a Corvette that someone custom made into a 4-door
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
Bob Lutz and Gilbert Villarreal started a company called VF Automotive, later VFL Automotive, to do this. Their first car, the VFL Destino, would pair the Fisker Karma’s slinky body with a GM 6.2-liter…so arguably a four-door Corvette.
pm-me-racecars@reddit
I just looked them up and hfs am I hard right now.
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
The Karma had the dubious honor of having a full-size footprint, but being classified as a subcompact by the EPA due to a lack of interior volume. It was certainly a case of form over function.
Remember, too, that it debuted around the same time as the Tesla Model S. Especially as Henrik Fisker was an industry veteran with many successful designs to his credit, Tesla and the Model S were thought to be the underdogs in that comparison. And we see how that turned out.
TX_Sized10-4@reddit
I adore the way the Lexus CT200h looks and it's not trash in the sense that it's a bad car, but it looks like a hot hatch and is actually just a reskinned and rebadged Prius.
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
Yep. One with even the 2.5-liter I4 out of the contemporary Camry and Scion tC would have been a real hoot.
Somehow, the CT 200h felt even slower than the third-gen Prius with which it shared so much.
Calm-Championship472@reddit
Chevy Cobalt, 03-08? Malibu
Repyourstruly@reddit
Yes my Malibu is newer but it just seems like a rushed job but man it’s pretty and sleek. Wish the performance was there though
Calm-Championship472@reddit
Well they had the Malibu SS with the 3.9 V6
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
They also had the Malibu Maxx, which—while stylistically confused—was a pretty cool concept. It also had a longer wheelbase and floor pan than the sedan (shared with the Pontiac G6 and eventually adopted by the 2008 Malibu and related Saturn Aura).
And there was a Malibu Maxx SS, too.
Repyourstruly@reddit
Nah those were an eyesore. My cousin had one and she stayed in the shop despite routine maintenance
Calm-Championship472@reddit
but better than a Cobalt
Repyourstruly@reddit
Oh without a doubt! 😂😂
Auri_Com@reddit
It's not exactly trash but the maintenance is crazy... Mazda RX-8!
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
The RX-8 is my vote, too. It’s only really good once its signature feature—the rotary—has been removed and replaced with an LS V8 or something.
Ravaganza@reddit
Land Rover Discovery Series II
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
Spacious, amazing styling, unique seating position and experience, incredibly capable. A charming trucklet.
And a complete piece of junk, sadly. With, these days, questionable safety. The fact of the matter is that the Discovery 3/LR3 was a huge improvement, and the Discovery 4/LR4 built upon that.
Grouchy-Chemical9155@reddit
I’m gonna get hate for this but I have to do it. Mustangs.
I had a ‘66 GT and I spent more money fixing it than it cost to buy it. By a LOT. Even when it was running, it didn’t handle well and it wasn’t all that fast. It sounded great and looked the business as long as you didn’t look too close, but it didn’t live up to the hype. The worst part? I still miss that damned thing.
Fast forward to 1996 and I thought, surely they’ve been improved, right? So I bought a ‘96 GT convertible. Looked good, sounded decent, but it was a disappointment. A disappointment that needed major work just after 50k. I noped out of that and into a Toyota.
I hear the S550s are properly good cars that actually go, handle and stop. But twice bitten means I admire them from a distance.
BotherPuzzleheaded50@reddit
I dont know if they qualify as trash, but I always liked the infiniti FX35, styling wise.
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
The FX was great. It was also an actual SUV built out of a sports-car platform. Even Porsche, at the time, didn’t do anything like that (the contemporary Cayenne split the difference, with Range Rover levels of offroadability coupled with road-going performance).
EvitaPuppy@reddit
Maserati Biturbo. Almost bought a great looking 2 door. As we were driving up to the bank to get the cash, I realized it was a total pos.
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
I saw one running, once.
Turned out it had been converted to an EV after the engine grenades itself.
SailingSpark@reddit
the V6 in those is terrible. You do not want to have to adjust the valves on them.
mission-ctrl@reddit
Jaguar XK series. Most high British cars for that matter.
-
I had a 94 Ford Probe and it was a fantastic car. One of the best I’ve ever owned. To this day I buy almost exclusively Mazdas because of my good experience with that Probe.
Ashton-MD@reddit
Gotta disagree with you dude. But to be clear, I am biased because I’m a Jag owner.
Proper Jags get an unfairly bad rap. Anything with their big sixes, eights or twelves are bloody good cars full stop. If you’re looking for a powerful luxury GT, in the 400+ horsepower range, the modern XKs are about as safe and easy as it gets — and if you don’t believe me, it’s competitors include: Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Maserati, and Porsche. Amongst such company, the Jag comes pretty good both in terms of running costs and reliability.
I also ran a Jag against a comparably specified Mercedes V8 for a couple years. The Jag was less troublesome, and cost less to maintain. I’m not going to suggest that they are bullet proof like a ‘98 Corolla, but to be fair, the new Corolla isn’t as bullet proof as the ‘98 Corolla.
The issues you’re likely referring to come either as part of “old caritis” or worse, “British Leyland”. Any Jag made from the BL era really does deserve the criticism because of how badly they were built. Brilliant designs ruined by bad management.
Pre-BL, aka the Llyons era, they were daring, innovative and roguish. Post BL era they were much better. Ford, for better or worse, helped out a lot too. Tata started off with good things, but they’ve really just killed the brand over the last few years.
For high end luxury cars, Jags have both a dedicated and quite substantial fan base too. There are many owners who do quite substantial builds to their Jags — most commonly, swapping out the slushboxes with OEM or close to OEM manuals. Take a moment to consider that — a V12 XJS, swapped from the anemic 3-speed GM lump box to a 5 speed. Or better yet….a supercharged V8 mated to the 5-speed. Bloody awesome stuff there. I think DriveTribe did one
But if you want to hate on the four pot Ingenium series, I quite agree. Aaaaaand the new direction Jag has gone…yeaaaah don’t know what they’re doing there.
But the TL;DR — drive a big Jag with a large six, V8 or V12. They may never be your “thing” but they are bloody good cars. Especially if you’re able to find the mythical XJS or XKR manual conversion.
bearded_dragon_34@reddit
Correct, I have a final-year Jaguar with a V12, a 1996 XJ12. There’s nothing quite like it, and it’s been surprisingly robust after the transmission rebuild (entirely a GM 4L80E with a unique case and computer).
mission-ctrl@reddit
Thanks for the excellent write up. I truly believe that most modern cars are “good cars” (including Jags) but people’s expectations are unrealistic.
MeanGene7676@reddit
I had a 2014 XKR and besides the one water pump I had to replace, it never broke down on me once. I sold it with 153,634 miles.

It seems like the British just can't make a reliable car.
Jim_in_Albuquerque@reddit
When I saw the PT Cruiser at a car show, I liked the overall look. Then I found out what chassis it was on and I never even bothered to test drive one.
regassert6@reddit
It was on the Neon platform. Sheet metal aside, it was a really useful vehicle layout inside. I don't know why DCA didn't make a normal looking mini-minivan like a Mazda 5 out of it.
Jim_in_Albuquerque@reddit
Exactly! A friend of mine's wife had a Neon. When it was relatively new, the four of us went out to dinner together and she offered to drive, I think solely because she was parked behind her husband.
Four fully-grown adults apparently exceeded the Gross Vehicle Weight of the car. It was incredibly noisy and uncomfortable, the suspension hitting the bump stops over every wave in the interstate pavement. I honestly thought we were going to destroy the car at any moment.
I never rode in it again. She drives a Mercury Milan now (discontinued, but much more comfortable for four adults). So... turning that chassis into a wagon didn't make sense to me.
regassert6@reddit
in PT guise, it classified as a light truck for CAFE standards with a payload of 865 pounds. More than useful, your anecdotal experience notwithstanding.
Jim_in_Albuquerque@reddit
Two guys (around 320lbs each at the time) and their ladies (around 225 each) exceeded the rating by a smidge. It really is a wonder we didn't destroy the car.
All four of us have slimmed down considerably since then. I'm under 260lbs for the first time in a couple of decades.
I also live around 2000 miles away from there, so these dinner outings have come to a screeching halt.
regassert6@reddit
Not trying to make fun or anything, but over 1,000 pounds of person; that wasn't the Neon's fault.....

I had a VR6 Corrado, i wouldn’t say it should’ve been RWD but definitely AWD, it had the bloodline of being the first R32 before the R32

Ahh that's a good take actually. They already had an AWD platform and the vr6 in their arsenal in the 90s with the Passat did they not? Definitely would've been awesome in the Corrado.

Every 1960s-1980s pickup, SUV and muscle car. They made some cool shit but by any measure they were trash that if they were driven they would rust out and self destruct within 10 years.
porcelainvacation@reddit
The thing is, though, they were cheap when new, it was normal to be able to buy a new car every few years.
outline8668@reddit
Where they that cheap though? A cheap new car in 1969 was around $3000. Inflation calculator puts that at 26k today. Most of those cars were thoroughly worn out of not in the scrap yard by the time they made 10 years old.
Ch4m3l30n@reddit
So, same as today's $26k cars?
outline8668@reddit
I don't think I know anyone who would be okay with spending 26k on a car they knew would be done by 100k!

Hate to say it but I'm qualified to - TVRs. Also when's the lady time you saw a Hyundai coupe
No-Understanding-912@reddit
Hyundais are generally treated as disposable cars, at least most people I know that own one year it that way. I think the Gen coupes have been beaten on more than a high schooler owned hand-me-down Nissan Altima.
Fit_Addition7137@reddit
I chuckled at "when's the lady time" probably a bit too much.

Malaise era C3 corvette (after the emissions rules kicked in)
SailingSpark@reddit
the C3 was so sexy looking too.

I really like some of the newer Maseratis especially the GranTurismo in yellow, but they’re really underwhelming for the price. You can get a killer Porsche for less. If I had the money I’d take a new Corvette Z06 over a GranTurismo. The reliability and maintenance costs suck, and it’s just not competitive enough with so many other options.
SailingSpark@reddit
One of Maserati's more enduring quirks they have managed to keep for almost 100 years. You never know when they are going to go boom.

Chrysler Crossfire. 70's Corvette Stingray. Jaguar XJ 220. Almost every TVR.

Any Alfa Romeo and anything from the early 80s due to smog killing everything fun. The 82 Corvette came with 150hp FFS.

Not third gen, but I had a 95 Formula and it was the worst car I've ever owned.
