for affordable $1000 phones
fatso486@reddit (OP)
I paid $270 for my Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 a year ago (Poco F6).
empty_branch437@reddit
I want actually good software and that lets me use whatever launcher I want without breaking basic aosp functionality like split screen and gestures.
ParthProLegend@reddit
My Poco F5 has excellent gestures and Split Screen support.
empty_branch437@reddit
Please read again, Xiaomi breaks those if your don't use their launcher
ParthProLegend@reddit
Quite a lot of Launchers have ads and Default POCO Launcher is clean enough to never require another launcher. You say Xiaomi makes unlocking bootloader difficult, you never knew the Knox and Samsung stupidity, did you!?
venfare64@reddit
Unlock your bootloader once and say goodbye to you banking app even if you lock the bootloader back, knox already mark your phone as insecure so your banking app won't work on already unlocked bootloader.
empty_branch437@reddit
I am not aware of any bank app that uses Knox primarily for detection and there is no API for third party apps to launch the Knox workspace. only your works it admins and enterprises can use it. If you know of a bank app that uses Knox lmk. https://docs.samsungknox.com/admin/knox-platform-for-enterprise/faq/
Google uses play integrity which your bank might use, banks can even have their own detection methods This is a security requirement by your bank.
empty_branch437@reddit
Weird to assume things and bring up Samsung which I never mentioned. But since you did, let's talk about it.
I don't use knox, and no need to unlock anyway, since oneui allows you to use any launcher and you won't lose split screen and gedtures.
I have used nova launcher free version has ads, I've used smart launcher, Niagara launcher, even Microsoft launcher etc, never seen ads.
On Samsung u can unlock so easily, all you do is enable onm unlock in dev options, reboot to fastboot type the command and press the volume up button and you're done.
No need for authorisation on servers bs, no need for waiting a week. No need giving them your phone number. My banking apps work with no issues with root,
Cheers.

If you want a phone that works correctly on stock firmware you are only left with pixel
hollow_bridge@reddit
pixels don't even have display out, even when they have the hardware for it. Motorola has better firmware.
Vb_33@reddit
Ew.

I paid $200 for my 7+ Gen 3(downclocked 8s gen 3) around the same time too. 12gb + 512, pretty sure the 12 + 256 redmi turbo 3(Chinese f6)was $200 too.
logosuwu@reddit
I'm fairly sure that the SD8sG3 used a unique die lol
1soooo@reddit
8s gen 3 die is unique compared to 8 gen 3.
It shares the same identical die with 7+ gen 3, with the only difference being lower advertised clocks and artificially removed ray tracing capabilities.
venfare64@reddit
Also the removal of AV1 decoding on 7+ gen 3 compared to 8s gen 3
logosuwu@reddit
I haven't found a die shot of the 7+G3 so I'll take your word for it, presumed it was different because of different isp, modem and gpu but that could be disabled through firmware or lasering sections off.
1soooo@reddit
Its all marketing lol its not that deep, all you literally have to do to see through the bullshit is to read the spec sheet and watch actual reviews and not the ones that only cover the surface level stuff that youtubers like marques do.
The ISP is identical, the gpus literally have the same shader count only slightly down clocked and the modem is just the same thing, downclocked to run lower peaks.
Creative_Purpose6138@reddit
Poco is literally made for fiiting the snapdragon chip. It is the brand's only goal. The rest are subpar. They started the series by putting a SD835 for $300.
AdPrevious4844@reddit
And people like it. So what's the issue? The camera, haptics and the rest are comparable to the rest of the $300 phones.
antifocus@reddit
Poco is a budget-oriented line for overseas markets, it's got a lot of phones with Qualcomm chips simply because Xiaomi is very close to Qualcomm, going back to the founding of the company, now they have Mediatek models as well.
venfare64@reddit
Actually, it's Snapdragon 845 for $300
comelickmyarmpits@reddit
I got mine for 250$ (poco f6 with 8s gen 3)
DocPhilMcGraw@reddit
Well emulation consoles also use this type processor and you can buy them for around $300 to $500.
windozeFanboi@reddit
Meh...
Instead of 1X4 +7A720 should have been, 1 X925 + 3 A725 or something.
PMARC14@reddit
I don't think they would be using modern or most recent ARM core designs considering the feud between them that wasn't settled in court till recently. Still the S series chips vs. using last year's flagship is certainly a choice
VastTension6022@reddit
They can't use the latest cores because single core is still by far the most valuable spec in phones. An 's' soc would just obsolete the flagship if it matched it.
windozeFanboi@reddit
Anyway... Let's hope this "single core gap" is simply transitionary... May we get next year \~3000 GB6 single for Mid Tier as standard.
basedIITian@reddit
Qualcomm will not pay for any of ARM's newer cores anymore. This is just a stopgap till they can trickle the Orion arch down to the sub-flagship tiers.
AVahne@reddit
Did I miss when we got the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 4?
DarthVeigar_@reddit
That was the Snapdragon 8 Elite.
The 8 Elite is the flagship the 8s is the lower variant. They called it the 8s Gen 4 because it isn't using custom Oryon cores.
F9-0021@reddit
That isn't confusing at all.
AnuroopRohini@reddit
Snapdragon Elite Series- Oryon Cores (Custom Made)
Snapdragon Gen Series- ARM Cores (ARM Made)
AbhishMuk@reddit
What are the practical/theoretical differences between the cores? What custom stuff is Qualcomm doing? Is it primarily things like image processors or are they also playing around with the cores themselves?
DowntownAbyss@reddit
I don't know but usually the ISP isn't part of the "cores",it's a separate part of the chips besides the general "logic cores" for the 8 elite it's fused with the NPU which doubles as both.

8 Gen 4 aka Snapdragon 8 Elite
fatso486@reddit (OP)
seems that only one global phone will have this (f7)
Far_Tap_9966@reddit
Has anyone used the Poco f7? Seems like an interesting phone to check out
logosuwu@reddit
Oppo K12 was launched as Oneplus nord CE4 in India so there's a chance that K13 goes global.
Vercingaytorix@reddit
I'm at lost after looking at the Product Brief.
Under Visual Subsystem it says "video decode up to 4K at 60 FPS."
But under the Camera section (which is noticeably a step up from 8 Gen 3) it says "8K HDR video playback @ 60 FPS."
So which one is it? HW decoding up to 4K or 8K? If it's the latter then it's a nice improvement from the 4K60FPS from prev. 8s Gen 3.
lifestealsuck@reddit
Its time to buy a 8s gen 3 I guess.
SkillYourself@reddit
Why? Just get a faster and probably cheaper 8 gen 2.
Giggleplex@reddit
Seems like the last cluster of A720 is a typo and is probably 2x A520. That would be make more sense as this is likely a binned 8g3 die which has 1x X4 + 5x A720 + 2x A520.
basedIITian@reddit
It is an all-large core SoC, not a binned 8G3.
fatso486@reddit (OP)
Im expecting the Poco F7 to be the perfect Flagship killer phone once it gets announced.
Its a shame that you have to pay at least twice as much in the western makets have to have access to similar performing SOC . i paid $270 for my F6 from aliexpress last year.
bmyvalntine@reddit
This time I think poco f7 is going dimensity route.
Luxuriosa_Vayne@reddit
GG
fatso486@reddit (OP)
The Phone announcement is tomorrow. it would be odd if it it didnt have the the 8s gen 4
almost as odd as Redmi releasing the Turbo 4 with the Dimensity 8400 :)
PorchettaM@reddit
The North American market. Pretty much everywhere else still gets the big Chinese brands.
