How to get good speed on an external NVMe SSD
Posted by Function0@reddit | hardware | View on Reddit | 7 comments
I purchased a rinky dink external enclosure for an NVMe M.2 drive and it's operating at much slower speeds than it should. Is this a limitation of the cheapo enclosure, USB spec or the drive? Unfortunately, I don't have any space M.2 slots to test what speed it should achieve while plugged directly into the motherboard.

1080 pro? I think that may be a fake drive. So no clue what the speed should be.

Sometimes there are stickers on the NVMe with a number or a model name. With these information we could help better.
But with the 4Tb capacity it should have at least 3-4000Mb/s read and write.
Use a USB 3.2 Enclosure at a USB 3.2 Port and you should get up to 1100 Mb/s transfer rate.
If you buy expensive Thunderbolt 3/4 enclosure and you have such a port you can get up to 4000Mb/s.

These china ssd's are very slow... Dont expect anything from these

Those thunderbolt 4 enclosures get mighty hot though. But they’re gloriously fast.

Likely a combination of USB port you plugged into or the enclosure is converting it to Sata interface.
So your answer is usb/cheap enclosure.
