Can Tires be trusted for 700 miles x2 trip ? PA to Tennessee

Got a 2014 Ford Explorer that I'm going to be selling in next few months so dont want to replace tires just now.
Pics are zoomed in- Link .
Interesting that only 2 tires show these cracks, and BOTH are on ONE side - my guess was since car is mostly parked (very less use) and the morning sun hits that side particularly (my very non-scientific guess)?
I need to make a trip with family, from PA to Tennessee, 700 miles each way.
- Do you think these tires can be trusted for it?
- Any particular strategy- friend said to carry spare and let tires cool off for 30-45mins for every 4 hours of driving. Is that fine & sufficient?
- What do you think caused this?
Help much appreciated!

You can probably get four used tires for less than $200.
Is your life worth $200 to you?

Didn't think about used tires, never got them. Do you think used tires (better brands) are better than the inexpensive but new.

Honestly, unless I ever am replacing all four tires at once and can get a great deal at a shop or financing, I always buy used tires. It's hard to say without specifics like what model of brand new tire you want or what model of used tire you end up getting.
But one thing is for sure, you will save money. If only the two tires are messed up, just replace them with two used tires and send it.

these are 245/60 R 18 - but where did you find the best deals for used tires
Ihatemongo@reddit
Honestly your best bet is any local no name tire shop. A reputable shop like Firestone wouldn't sell you used ones

Ok

Those are like 20 years old man... No, just no.
If you have to find a less than ideal solution, I'd want the new ones on the part of the car the makes it go, stop, and turn... So the front.

Thank.. I didn't even think about checking date code on these? Shd. Not be 20 years but lemme check.
Also, most advice I have seen about putting new ones, on the rear even though this is an FW.D. but you say front? Though your logic makes sense.
jrileyy229@reddit
Yeah, because that is what the Internet tells you. So the rear end doesn't come around... And it's not completely wrong... But really far more applicable to winter driving. In the summer, going down the highway... If you have to panic stop and really compress those front tires .. I would rather those not be the 20 year old ones.

Good points - thanks

Getting tires while you’re on a long road trip is awful. My brother had a tire blowout in middle of nowhere VA. Added 3 hours to an already long trip.
nycaur@reddit (OP)
Yup, that would indeed be painful.

I would not trust those tires with my family in the car. If money is tight get some used ones. I usually buy a set off marketplace then have a local shop replace or you can find a decent set of tires and wheels for half what the tires cost new if the wheels are nothing special. Just check the date code on the tires and don't buy anything over 4 or 5 years old.

Thanks..will look into it. Amazon marketplace you mean? Do they advt tire date code when selling used?
imprl59@reddit
Sorry, facebook marketplace is what I meant.

Ok..friend used walmart tires to install and said it's abt $18. Not sure if they'll even put used tires on

hellllllll nah

Thanks for commenting. Do you think I shd. replace just the 2 that show this kind of cracking? Possibly put them at the rear?
Total-Improvement535@reddit
Ir those are the only two that are like that and the other two don’t have any dry rotting, that would be okay.
You’d want the two new ones on the rear axle, and the two old ones on the front axle.
I wouldn’t trust those tires to drive much further than a tire shop, tbh.

Thanks, that helps

Imo just replace it.
If I was a prospective buyer of your car I’d immediately haggle you down to cover the cost of tires after seeing those. Listing a car with having brand new tires will only help with your listing.
Not to mention. Personally I would not take these on a road trip, it’s not worth putting my family (or others on the road) at risk. I’m not trying to be alarmist, but it’s a very real possibility of a blowout and completely loss of control.
