This topic is just to say I love this thing so freaking much dude. IT JUST WORKS! It doesn't crash, it lets me do everything I do, it is beautiful, I can rice it the way I want
Bro I just don't understand why this thing didn't took the world yet. WE NEED TO MAKE LINUX MAINSTREAM!
Anyway, just wanted to put this here.
HAIL TO THE PENGUIN!!!!!!

Truth be told... Linux will never be mainstream simply due to its "Do-it-yourself" nature. And windows is "idiot-oriented", like a fellow redditor in this sub stated once. And folks love things made for idiots.

You missed the major fun yet, try enabling video acceleration on your browser on Linux.
Beautiful_Crab6670@reddit
If that is a "major fun" to you, then you (still) have a lot to learn.
atiqsb@reddit
What cpu are you on? Mine is AMD.
Beautiful_Crab6670@reddit
Right now I'm typing on a ARM-based PC, a Orange pi 5 MAX. Which the hardware acceleration support on a browser varies from "broken" to "completely broken" out of the box.
atiqsb@reddit
Wow, an ARM based PC! Is Linux working out of the box? Is it comparable to snapdragon elite?
Beautiful_Crab6670@reddit
"Out of the box" the experience is very broken. You've got to learn new things to make it usable.
As an example, at first glance I had to learn what the necessary gpu packages are and how to compile em. It is more "easier" right now (all it takes is a single file on the package manager) but it is -still- recommended for you to compile the whole thing yourself. And for the sake of sanity, I even made a bash script myself that does exactly this.
Compared to snapdragon elite? I've no idea. But I suppose a snapdragon elite pc must be easier to deal with considering it uses proprietary software.
Still... right now (at least on a orange pi 5 max) I can watch some 4k videos on youtube no problem. Gaming is "eh" to "okay" if you don't mind playing some indie games. The only thing that is perfectly usable is the browser (after tweaking it a lot.).
Raunhofer@reddit
Nah, it's the app support and a bit rough design of ui/ux. Add first party game and Adobe support without compromises and it'll be a bleak day for consumer Windows.
aallon_pituus@reddit
UI/UX isn't rough on Mint atleast
Raunhofer@reddit
I'm glad you like it, but unfortunately it is. It's not bad by any means, very usable, just a tad amatuerish compared to corporate competition with professional well paid designers.
JohnClark13@reddit
well, not just that, but most people don't care about operating systems, they just want their program to work. You can say "just find an alternative application" but users want the application they know, you can say "just use wine" but that often requires a degree of tinkering to get working and most people either don't know how or don't have time for that. I've fallen into the category of "don't have time for that", so I use Linux for the systems that I know it will work well with (my server, nas, pi systems) and windows for my work machine and gaming machine. It's more about the applications than the OS.

Now that's the harsh truth I didn't want to hear. But you're right, I admit!

Thanks lad.

I love linux so much.
And mines set up so it can run windows or linux stuff no problem. I keep things mismashed all over(windows games in my home games folder for example). Doesnt matter since I can just double click like normal to launch anything.
Also I get way better performance. I love seeing my pc actually idle when its supposed to be. Nothing running that I dont want running.
luizfx4@reddit (OP)
You have huge point there! Cannot help but grim when I see my ram usage not reach 4 GB with a lot of stuff open. It feels like having more RAM without having it.
Informal_Bunch_2737@reddit
I love watching all the counters just drop when Im not doing anything

I'm glad that you are having a good experience. Linux has served me well for two decades, and I hope that Linux will serve you well over the years.
Linux is an operating system, with both strengths and weaknesses, but an excellent fit for many (not all) use cases. You will learn more about the strengths, and bump into the weaknesses, as you use Linux over the years. My guess is that the first flush of hyper-enthusiasm will wear off in time, to be replaced by a deeper, but quieter, appreciation for Linux.
Linux is not the best fit for all users and all use cases. Linux will become mainstream, perhaps, in time, but not until Linux is better for the consumer (that is, Android, ChromeOS, iOS, macOS and Windows "turn it on and use it) market segment.
Torvalds observed in 2104 that Linux would not gain market share in the consumer desktop market segment unless and until the Linux community focused on a handful of distributions and applications, focusing on quality rather than innovation and quantity.
That's a discussion for another time and place, but if you want to help "MAKE LINUX MAINSTREAM", consider developing your skills over the course of a few years and becoming a contributor to a distribution or application, perhaps as an ongoing maintainer.
My best and good luck to you.

Oh thanks! I actually use this since 2017 if I'm not mistaken but seeing my computer not bloated has always been a pleasure! Did distro hopping for some years but now stable using Mint. Used Lubuntu for some time while the Kernel support wasn't available for Mint.
Abou the dev thingy? Of course! It is one of my goals. However this thing is so well-made and robust I'd need pretty elite skills to collaborate. Thanks for the comment!
Sensitive-Rock-7548@reddit
Hail, hail, hail and kill! No... Wait, that was another thing.
luizfx4@reddit (OP)
LOL
Kill you now who ;) LOL

What makes you think Linux isn't already mainstream? Maybe not as a desktop OS, but it certainly is as a server OS and an embedded OS. And if you restrict your view to the kernel, Linux runs on more mobile devices than any other OS.
luizfx4@reddit (OP)
Sure but I was referring to desktops. Thought most people would catch!
