Is RTX 5070 actually bad? Just ordered one but I'm reading things that scare me

Before you read, I am a layman gamer/professional video editor. I am not a PC expert by any means!
For context, I just upgraded my entire CPU/MOBO/RAM to AM5 because I was having CPU bottlenecks in games. Turns out I was barely bottlenecked (Intel i7-9700F + RTX 2060 Super), so while I don't get the same frame drops I was getting before, I also didn't necessarily see a spike in frames like I had hoped. (CS2 is my main game so from what I know a good CPU is important to get the most possible frames to your GPU).
I am now running a Ryzen 7 7700X and 32gb DDR5 (a little low, but I read 32 DDR5 is better than 64 DDR4). I also edit videos professionally, so I wanted a decent budget chip with enough cores to support all of my creative multitasking. I decided it's time to upgrade my GPU too, but unfortunately I feel like I decided to upgrade in the midst of a GPU drought. I considered the AMD cards, but I also use Blender a good bit and I have heard it is highly optimized for NVIDIA cards. So I saw a drop of PNY 5070s with 12gb VRAM for $550 on Best Buy yesterday and scooped one up. It's obviously going to be better than my 2060 Super with 8gb of VRAM... but will it be good enough to run most graphic intensive single player games at max settings at 1440p? I don't really care about all the DLSS drama as I have used it before on my current card and it isn't that noticeably bad with an actually game changing amount of frames being generated. I just want a smooth gameplay experience that looks great.
Almost everything I'm reading is bashing the 5070 now and its 12gb of VRAM. I don't know if there are valid concerns I should have here or if people are just upset that NVIDIA overhyped it and made some false claims calling it the 4090 killer. I am expecting a world of difference from my 2060 Super, but should I curb my expectations? I saw someone saying it only puts up like 60 frames in 1440p in more demanding games... surely that can't be true? I can pull that on MOST games (albeit with lower settings) with my 2060 Super now. The one I can think of that defeated it was Monster Hunter Wilds. Is the 5070 just a super weak card carried by DLSS, and will I mind that much playing a single player game realistically.
Thanks for reading this far, and thanks for bearing with my probably painful level of computer knowledge!

Love mine
Asus prime 5070 bought at msrp paired with a Ultra 265 bundle with a Tuf Z890 and 32gb of ram at a great price.
Not a fan of AMD so I went my own route. Reading reports if grenading AMD chips and GPUs this morning I am happy with my choice.
usr012824@reddit
Nice, we built the same PC. I'm very happy with the results. And the Newegg sales and free games included made it a no brainer.
DirteeCanuck@reddit
My temps and voltage are nice and low and I haven't had a single issue with my setup yet.
No crashing or other bizarre shit I had when I put a 5070TI in my old setup.
Been super rock solid.

5070 is the peak 1440P card. Overkill for 1080p, too weak for 4k
iedy2345@reddit
I mean depdens what you paid for it, it's still an upgrade from your 2060 no matter what so at least enjoy it
I would say the 5070 is just dissapointing, people expected more than just a 4070 with a 5 instead of 4 in it , you know what i mean?
no6969el@reddit
Yeah seriously. Everyone is crapping on the 5080 and including myself until I realized that it's going to be a perfectly beautiful upgrade to my 3090.
Found one at my local Best buy, pull the trigger and been very happy so far. It overclocks like a beast and pairs well with my 9800 x3d.
Plus my son just got a 3090 😂
Ikon_@reddit
Which MOBO do you have paired with the 9800x3d? Worried from all the frying reports over it esp the ASROCK boards.
no6969el@reddit
MSI MAG x670E tomahawk. You have to make sure you're on the latest bios for peak performance. Also, make sure that you buy memory that is on the Mobo supported list. It is incredibly important for AM5.
fkroep@reddit
Currently creating a build with said CPU and GPU. But having my doubts on what cooler I should get and which RAM to use. Currently deciding on the Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 CL30 and a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 as the cooler. Mind if I ask you what cooler you are using with the 9800x3d and how is it holding up? I know the Vengeance should be RAM compatible heightwise with my current chosen cooler. Have checked motherboard compatibility and should work just fine on a Asus TUF GAMING B850.
no6969el@reddit
I don't know if I have a special chip but I can run a negative 40 offset and the temps never get above 65° c. I don't remember my cooler right now I think it was like assassin or something I'll double check and let you know. Also don't quote me on my temps I just know that they're ridiculously low.
fkroep@reddit
Probably a Thermalright Peerless Assassin then. Was looking at that one too. Mate of mine suggested a Dark Rock Pro 5 but pricewise it just didn't seem to be worth it. Almost 2,5 times the price of the Phantom Spirit which is just a bit above performance of the Peerless. So should be fine with a 9800x3d then.

Totally understandable. Got it for MSRP or at least close at $550. Saw a bunch of people saying "buy a used 4080" but I can't even find one of those for under $1000!
AlternateWitness@reddit
People are mental. The reason a lot of people say it was a bad card was because it was a worse value at MSRP compared to the MSRP of the 9070 XT. However, it’s very hard to find either card at MSRP, especially the 9070 XT. Right now, $550 is an amazing value for a card with that power. You got lucky.

I just bought the 5060Ti 16GB version for 500€ while I'm in Europe, Greece in particular and truly thought these will cost over 650€ here as usually. I was amazed only 70€ above MSRP and bought it without second thought or regret. I'm on 1440p as well. What I've seen on reviews, this time they did manage something better. Thankfully, I avoided the 4060Ti. The only characteristic I loved on that card, the extreme power efficiency. Now, on 5060Ti, they gave the power back and pulls on average 20-30% increase against the 4060Ti. The most amazing? The 4060Ti 16GB still costs way more. Around 700€. Crazy situation.
Given all that, you really bought a great card for an even greater price. Don't have any regrets, especially since you come from the 2060S. I come from the 3060Ti and don't have any regrets, buyer's remorse whatsoever.
Enjoy your new card, the incredible difference and don't listen too much by too many people. Everyone has his opinion based on 'facts' we won't ever know about each individual's beef.

The main problem with the 5070 the way I see it is the amount of Vram. I was really disappointed when I found it would only have 12GB. Not to add on to your potential buyer's remorse, but that really is something to consider.

Yeah this is the main thing. If you could get a hold of a 9070XT at msrp it would be a lot better than the 5070 but you've got something ok. If you paid a marked up price for it you would have been scammed. I think it's overpriced where it is tbh. AMD beat Nvidia this time but the consequence is that the 9070XT is inflating in price pretty quickly because of the demand and scalpers.
There are other issues you should be aware of though. Missing ROPs is a manufacturing error with the 50 series atm, so look up how to check and nvidia said they'd offer replacements if you got a defective model. Drivers are also a mess right now so you might see worse performance on some games until Nvidia sort them out. There's also the whole physx thing if you play certain older titles.
MegaSmile@reddit
One thing to keep in mind is that the 9070XT is basiclly includes an integrated space heater with its crazy 300-350W power draw.
Part of the reason I went with the 5070 instead.
Matt0706@reddit
The main complaint is that it is not an upgrade over the 4070 super which I got for the same price over a year ago. It’s not an inherently bad card just a non-existent generational leap.

SHOOTING_BUTT@reddit
Just put in my 5070 yesterday. Got it for $650 after shipping. I put it into my hp omen 30l pre built upgrading the 3060ti that was in there. Cyberpunk fully maxed out with Ray and path tracing + lod mods = 150-170 fps w dlss4. With dlss 3 it was more like 100-120. No dlss running it was at like 60 fps. So raw power is pretty ok I guess but the frame gen is pretty crazy. Maybe I notice a little bit of latency w dlss 4 when driving really fast and some screen tearing here even tho my monitor is 170hz but nothing too drastic. I also tried space marine 2 was getting 100 fps. Will try more games tonight.
Big_Exit_4177@reddit

darragh999@reddit

ZeroPaladn@reddit
It was an unimpressive card at launch, only scraping by the 4070 Super. It's only held back by a few titles at 1440p for VRAM, but mindful that you can dial back textures from Ultra to High in those games and rectify those concerns.
Most games will max out in raster at 1440p, but not all and raytracing adds to the load. DLSS does help a lot, and Nvidia's latest launch of it is black magic as far as I'm concerned, and expect to lean on it more as games come out in the next few years demanding more and more.
Was it a bad pickup? It depends. MSRP is a joke right now, so it's up to what you picked it up for and what the alternatives were. Some regions are able to scoop up a 9070 XT for a little more for a nice jump in raster performance while others can still find last-gen cards available for reasonable prices and opt to grab those instead of the more bloated 50-seres.
You found a 5070 for MSRP. That's already doing better than most. Unless a 9070 XT is available for $600-700 around you, I'd say that's a decent pick up in this market. I wouldn't think to hard about it.

5070 is msrp in the uk at £529 and constantly in stock its not selling well
oc uk said they have sold over 10k 9070xt now
ZeroPaladn@reddit
It's crazy how things can change in a week, eh? Stock is pretty happy in a lot of places now, though MSRP isn't a given yet and your market doesn't reflect everywhere. We also know that the 9070 XT is both wildly successful and AMD is having a giggle with how popular the card is.
Jbarney3699@reddit
It’s not good value overall. It’s just okay value at MSRP. 5070ti at MSRP is better value, but as for AMD the 9070 and 9070XT are miles ahead value wise at MSRP.
It’s a good card(save for VRAM) it’s just not an amazing value proposition.
Snow_Uk@reddit

I bought mine yesterday for CAD$800 before tax (~$563 USD). I didn’t even struggled to pick whether 9070XT or RTX 5070. Cuz in Canada, I’ve found 9070XT costs around CAD$1,000 before tax. And I have to buy a new PSU for 9070XT. So no regret for getting RTX5070. I was still using GTX970 lol. So RTX 5070 is gonna be a major upgrade to me.
Elitefuture@reddit
5070 for $550 is fine for the current gpu market.
I would like to say that 12gb will limit it in the future, as a select few number of games already can't run on it with rt on. You can lower your settings to let it fit in the 12gb of vram, but it does feel bad to be limited solely because of vram.
And yes, some games will pull 60fps or less in 1440p in demanding games BECAUSE games are becoming way more graphically intensive given our hardware, games are becoming less optimized as the devs are underpaid + in a time crunch, and max settings are being built around the highest end hardware with no stops or visual tricks. Most of the time if the 5070 is below 60, it's because RT is on though... https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070-founders-edition/38.html
The 5070 is a solid card for $550 atm, people just didn't like it due to the 12gb of vram + the 9070 being better for $550 with more vram(although only obtainable at msrp for the first 2 weeks). The 9070 xt was even an even better card, but the prices on those spiked kinda instantly.
GameCookerUSRocksVR@reddit
The games can run on it with RT. Just not a couple with settings on Ultra or at 4k with RT. I play games people said couldn't be run on my RTX 3080 laptop. I just have to lower the settings sometimes. No big deal.
UnluckyLux@reddit
4070 super or TI supers are almost $1000 right now, absolutely insane. I paid $620 for my 5070 vanguard LE and I’m happy with it. Will probably upgrade when prices come back down though. I do find it weird that a 5070 is 12gb, a 5070ti is 16gb, a 5080 is 16gb??? 5090 is 32gb Why aren’t more people complaining about that. That is completely unacceptable. The 5080 should have been a 24gb card.
Elitefuture@reddit
5080 16gb is disgusting.
It's because it would eat into their datacenter + ai market.
You NEED vram for certain tasks regardless of speed. So if they had another >16gb card, people would buy that. The xx90 cards are okay since they already overcharge for them + have limited quantity of whatever couldn't become datacenter/ai chips.
This is also why the 3090 is still worth a lot. If you had the option of a 3090 and a 5080 when working with AI, many would choose the 3090. The difference is that the 5080 will be faster when working with models that can fit in 16gb of vram, but the 5080 limits your potential to do more than that. The 3090 gives you more space to work with and has Cuda + tensor cores.
rps_killerwhale@reddit (OP)
Thank you! This makes me feel better. I feel like I still win by even getting a decent graphics card at MSRP right now. Everyone said buy used 4 series, but they're all priced to the moon right now. Everyone said buy AMD, but they don't mesh super well with the Cycles engine in blender from what I've read. I try to remember that, while I guess I'm a PC enthusiast, I'm not an expert that is going to be as picky as a lot of people talking about graphics cards. And I just upgraded to 1440p... Not even considering 4k gaming yet. I am very interested in ray tracing as a concept, and for rendering in 3D, but it's not make it break to have it on for me in games.
Pokimura@reddit
in my book, there is no bad gpu. just bad prices. since you got it at 550 mrsp, thats dang good value to me in these crazy times with the GPU market. Anything higher though becomes debatable as even the microcenter near me has 5070 sitting on their shelf for $700 collecting dust.
Speedogomer@reddit
Reviewers are mad because the 5070 isn't a huge leap forward, and isn't cheaper.
The problem is, as tech advances, you won't see these massive generational leaps anymore.
The 5070 performs better than the 4070, while costing $50 less. Factoring in inflation the 5070 is significantly cheaper than the 4070 was when it launched.
So the 5070 is cheaper, and better than it's predecessor. It's not a bad card at all. If it was $450 every reviewer out there would be calling it the greatest thing ever.
ajunior7@reddit
I just upgraded from my 2060S to a 5070 (the PNY one too) and it was a solid card to buy out of the ones available in my price range. I now get three times the frames I get in ultra settings (albeit at 1080p, since that is my primary res), I would imagine it would be no slouch at 1440p.
Point is, you should upgrade relative to the hardware at hand. With the 5070ti series and above being marked up to $1000+, then you have last gen second hand GPU prices costing about the same, so the PNY variant 5070 is the best you can get at $549. The equally priced AMD RX 9070 is indeed better, but damn near impossible to get hold of still.
The criticisms about the 5070 are valid, and was subject to further scrutiny because Jensen said it had "4090 performance", but you should take these criticisms with a grain of salt since it usually comes from people that use bleeding edge hardware. Sure, the 5070 is more like the 4070 Super with DLSS 4 + Frame Gen tacked on, but are you going to get a second hand 4070S when it costs more than the 5070? Fuck no! You do what you can in the most sensible way possible.
Monstrous96@reddit
The people complaining are people who upgrade every generation (braindead lowkey), gamers thinking nvidia's main audience are gamers still (slow in the head) and the people who thought the 5070 was going to outperform the 4090 (which is valid because of false marketing) You mentioned blender and yes every 3D software is built around NVIDIA.
hkeyplay16@reddit
Lol, I just bought a 5070 for $740. This market is stupid.
I would have gone for the 9070 xt if I weren't primarily using it for AI projects at home.
At MSRP it's a steal right now...just not an upgrade from a 4070. For me, I'm coming from onboard graphics and don't game, so I hope to sell it after I've trained on how to teach the computers to take all of our jobs. Who knows...maybe I'll try a little gaming on it too.
The last time I had a dedicated graphics card I was mining sh*tcoins with a couple of R9 290's. They were top of the line at launch amd only sold for $399. This market is insane.

5070 Ti better
Bubbly-Currency5064@reddit
For $550? You can't really do any better for that price. If you're sticking with 1440p it will be great for many years.
ziptofaf@reddit
Depends on the game. Alan Wake 2? An RTX 5080 can do 60 fps 1440p in sufficiently high settings and it's much faster than 5070. Cyberpunk 2077 + path tracing at 1440p without any kind of upscaling barely hits 60 fps on a 5090.
Generally speaking rather than look at "max settings" check if "my card can play this game and make it look good". Because max very often isn't actually meant for today's hardware. It's futureproofing so someone buying, say, Stalker 2 (a good example since on 1440p maxed out it actually drops to like 60 fps on 5070 in most demanding areas) few years from now will see it look great on their RTX 6080.
So there are two answers to your question:
a) No if you actually aim for maxed out settings - pure native 1440p, no DLSS of any kind, enabling all kinds of visual effects even though they barely look any better.
b) Yes if you stop caring about "max" settings and just if the game looks good. Your card is still significantly faster than what most gamers have in their machines so it will most certainly run just about any title that comes out.
Depends on which part of it. Rendering? Yeah, absolutely, OptiX is way faster for rendering than I believe OpenCL AMD is using. Modeling itself? Imho a comparable experience. I do believe that Nvidia is a winner in this category however.
rps_killerwhale@reddit (OP)
Thanks for breaking down your answers like that. You explained the settings much better than I did. I guess "max" wasn't the right word because I'm always fine with going in and lowering shadows or AA or something. As long as it still looks really good and runs smoothly I'm happy.
As for Blender, unfortunately I do have to have render quickly for work. They're usually not the most complex scenes so the difference may be negligible. My hope was that I'll be able to model a bit more smoothly in the viewport in Cycles instead of constantly switching between that and EEVEE, but I also understand that's a demanding task even with OptiX. My work laptop runs a 4060 (laptop though) and it's not quite there
BillionaireBear@reddit
$550 for 5070 is actually good value. Used market is in shambles for 40 series. You made a solid purchase IF you paid $550+tax
HectorZeronie@reddit

MasterChief118@reddit
It’s going to blow your 2060 super away. I have the regular 4070 and it’s a great card. It is super efficient with a slight undervolt. The 9070 XT and 5070 Ti are just better value for the money but I wouldn’t say it’s a bad value.
TsunamicBlaze@reddit
It’s all about context. All the reviews are coming at it from enthusiasts perspective of upgrading from last generation. Price to performance compared to last gen is low in value. Upgrading from 20 series and before is just straight gains at this point.
--ikarus--@reddit
Prices are dropping quick and the cards are becoming more available. I wouldn't buy a 12gb card in 2025, and definitely not for that kind of money. You're better off waiting for the ti prices to settle
penguinbrawler@reddit
It was the same complaints with 4070 which i have and love. The problem was always price. I’m sure you’ll enjoy a 5070 and since it sounds like you didn’t break the bank, enjoy your card!
Numerous_Gas362@reddit
Coming from a 2060 you will be a substantial upgrade, but the 12GBs of VRAM might become as issue in some cases. Though nothing that turning down a setting or two won't fix.
zh4mst3rz@reddit
there are no bad product, just bad pricing.
IggyHitokage@reddit
Man, the 6500XT though...
Even cheap that card had problems with the x4 interface, most people in that price range wouldn't have PCIe 4.0 boards or processors capable of utilizing it.
I'm hoping the 9070 XT and beyond has given AMD an idea of what people really want from them.
GladiusLegis@reddit
It's a wash vs. the 4070 Super at best.
And worse, it's a 12GB 70-clsss card in 2025. That fact alone is unacceptable. If it were labeled a 5060 like it really is, it wouldn't get as much hate.
