Amazon combats Nvidia and AMD GPU scalpers with Prime subs

The source are Amazon price lists.
honeybadger1984@reddit
It would be a way to limit say one Nvidia card per household, per Prime account. But not doing the 5090 is stupid. Kinda pointless as the 5080 isn’t impossible to get. Just pay the huge AIB mark up.
Boofster@reddit
So people don't have families and girlfriends and kids who have PCs too?
honeybadger1984@reddit
For the context of 5080/5090, no they don’t exist. The problem is giving scalpers wiggle room, and then they’ll claim they have 12 roommates.
imaginary_num6er@reddit
What the hell
EdzyFPS@reddit
This alone tells you that it's not about stopping scalpers, but cashing in on them buying prime subs to scalp the already scalped GPUs.
LoveNoirPhotos@reddit
I'm sure people will just use free trials to purchase..
impablomations@reddit
I just had a look on Amazon UK, there's one from some German seller that's charging £4000/$5200 for a 5090!
Clear-Subject-842@reddit
ive seen 5090s available in scandiavian stores for about 32-3300 euros, They sell out within a few hours but at least not instantly.
Still too much for what is supposed to be around a 2050 ish euro card.
EdzyFPS@reddit
That's absolute madness.
Swanky_Gear_Snob@reddit
Exactly this!
steak4take@reddit
It's almost $9000 AUD!
ThrowawayusGenerica@reddit
What, 9000!? There's no way that could be right!!
steak4take@reddit
It's literally there on the page, sold by ASUS.
meodd8@reddit
Laughable, really. The product classes that, today, doesn’t even have stock issues are limited, but the 90 series that still sells out immediately when not bundled is exempt????
Don’t make me laugh.
ray_fucking_purchase@reddit
They had one chance and blew it.
Avalanc89@reddit
*Amazon profits on GPU scalpers. FTFY
ComfortableTomato807@reddit
Now we can pay a subscription to be "scalped" by a mega corporation, very creative Amazon
TheJohnnyFlash@reddit
Or just wait a couple months. Like really, what game is there right now that needs an RTX 5090?
Pulverdings@reddit
VR games, but there are very niche.
Aggravating_Fun_7692@reddit
Do people still play VR? I can't think of any games outside that Half life one that looked worthwhile
Pulverdings@reddit
Cockpit games, like Flight Sim or F1 or other racing games. Far better than a trippel monitor setup.
Also there are a lot of ports of classic games to VR by the community, but those games don't need a 5090, we'll maybe except Crysis VR. https://github.com/fholger/crysis_vrmod
Aggravating_Fun_7692@reddit
Had fun with my VR headset for a couple weeks when I got it and it's been collecting dusts for years now
Aggravating_Fun_7692@reddit
None
RikuDesu@reddit
5090 drivers need more time in the oven too, I'd advise people to wait unless they're worried about tarrif price hikes, which I feel already were applied so no sense in rushing atm
joyboyNOW@reddit
You can shittalk all you want but 99% of retailers in germany priced 5090s for 1k over msrp. Amazon actually unironically the most consumer friendly pricing
Aggravating_Fun_7692@reddit
Amazon doesn't sell them, 3rd parties sell on Amazon. Probably why others are down voting you
Baggynuts@reddit
Honest question. Will this actually do anything though. If you're making thousands on scalping, the price of a Prime membership is peanuts.
DehydratedButTired@reddit
It will tax scalpers with memberships so amazon gets a cut.
vlakreeh@reddit
Hard to say, I worked in the botting world for a year and it was common on sites like Amazon to have hundreds of accounts if you were serious about getting stock since a single account doing too much activity triggered the anti-bot hard. If this means that the account that sees stock also needs prime to buy it then this could actually be pretty big since that's dozens or hundreds of prime subs, which would eat into their margins quickly.
ReplacementLivid8738@reddit
They could spend the prime sub on a Twitch stream they control to recoup like half of the cost.
Gjallock@reddit
It definitely works. I got my 5080 at msrp and it sat for almost 2 days.
StickiStickman@reddit
Where? How?
Gjallock@reddit
On Amazon, I just saw it and bought it lol
Said Prime exclusive on it
Strazdas1@reddit
Yes, it will. It will make Bezos richer, which was the goal.
wrathek@reddit
Based on literally no 50 series gpus showing up if you turn on the prime filter? No, probably not.
neuro_08@reddit
You can't have multiple Prime accounts with the same name. They only allow this to a certain extent for business/seller accounts. They have stringent suspension policies for running multiple Primes under the same person:
There's ways around it, but it involves unique identities on your network, address, payment and cookies. It would make no sense to do this, hence the reason for them doing this.
Deep90@reddit
Maybe.
Usually scalpers are running a bunch of accounts so this does start to limit how many they could theoretically run at a time.
If they buy too many bots, it might not actually get them more GPUs since they are competing against other bots anyway.
ParthProLegend@reddit
Isn't first month prime free ? 🤣
nokei@reddit
If they limited it to one purchase per prime then it'd be tacking on like $140 per card assuming it locked them into the year.
TheMissingVoteBallot@reddit
It'll slow it down because activating a Prime membership will take some effort from a new account.
NeverLookBothWays@reddit
Sounds like scalping but with extra steps
TheEDMWcesspool@reddit
They are not combatting scalpers, they are joining scalpers by scalping a subscription out of you..
Jaybonaut@reddit
This is still taking advantage of people.
reddit_equals_censor@reddit
ah yes that is the reason.....
and not amazon trying to hold products hostage under a subscription and that is how it should get reported on...
right.......
____
holy shit club386 what the shit is this headline?
utter bullshit.
Sevastous-of-Caria@reddit
Is there a one per purchase rule? İf not, this benefits scalpers more cause they will buy it then get all 10 of the stock
clearkill46@reddit
It's been in place for a while now, I noticed when a 5070ti I had backordered popped back in stock with a sooner delivery date, wouldn't let me check out unless I cancelled the first one.
mechnanc@reddit
Yeah this will do jack unless they limit it to 1 per account in a certain time period, like once a month.
xole@reddit
That's what I'm hoping, even if it's 1 per model per month per household, it'd help a little bit.
Jon_TWR@reddit
I still don’t see any available.
Deeppurp@reddit
They did this with the switch launch, reserved launch units for prime only members cause scalping was growing worse even back then.
DiggingNoMore@reddit
Why is the photo of a 9070XT for $1,050? I thought they were supposed to be $600.
the11devans@reddit
This specific model has been set to a list price of $1050, then when in stock it goes on "sale" to $750. It's been like that for a few days now
gurugabrielpradipaka@reddit (OP)
Because Amazon is now the scalper.
advester@reddit
MSRP was just a couple token cards at launch.
airfryerfuntime@reddit
I'm not seeing a single 'exclusively for prime membership' GPU. It's just all of the same ones I was seeing last week, an abundance of 5060s, slightly overpriced 5070s, and $4000 5090s.
DNosnibor@reddit
I didn't even know the 5060 had been launched.
Never mind, I just checked, it hasn't. I guess you meant 4060 lol
Frac0@reddit
Always thought Best Buy should've done this.
daggah@reddit
They tried? Back in the rtx 3000 series shortages days, they locked some gpu drops behind their membership program paywall. It wasn't a popular move...
shalol@reddit
Maybe not popular amongst GPU miner bots, that is
1mVeryH4ppy@reddit
As if Prime membership is something exclusive...
EnigmaSpore@reddit
hahaha. it's an elite club... and we're all in it.
FitOutlandishness133@reddit
I’m looking at Amazon right now they have 5080 going from 1600&-2200$ . Not in a million years I hope whoever little scalpers are selling this go bankrupt and choke on all the taxes they never pay.
chx_@reddit
Abject failure on the journalist's side. Let me fix it:
There.
basil_elton@reddit
Everything Amazon does other than AWS is literally to increase Prime memberships, including sinking hundreds of millions of dollars to make fan-fiction TV shows.
This isn't some big revelation.
salartarium@reddit
The Amazon Business American Express Card gives 3% back on AWS
ResponsibleJudge3172@reddit
Did I not see Amazon scalp GPUs themselves
neuro_08@reddit
This process is at least 3 weeks old. Not sure how the media is discovering this now. I reserved my 5070 Ti Aero on the 18th, slated for the end of April as a "Prime Only".
