$9,797.37 to replace 2.0 EcoBoost Engine in 2015 Ford Edge, what else should we anticipate will need to be replaced or fixed?

Copied quote from Ford below. Is it reasonable to anticipate the catalytic converter will also need to be replaced?
Service tech stated that more than one cylinder is damaged from the blown head gasket. Lots of coolant in the oil and two leaks not sure where exactly (video recording of his diagnostic cut out when he stated where the leaks were coming from). Judging by just the footage they seem to be in two different areas. One for sure is oil but don’t know what the other leak is.

That's a stupid idea, 10k is a fat down-payment on a better car
evilroadtrips@reddit (OP)
To be clear, we don’t have $10k for either scenario we’d have to see if we qualify for financing for the engine replacement or a new car. Our credit is shot, we are working hard to change our situation but these are our cards we’ve been dealt and are working with for probably the next couple years. I’m just really grateful we were able to get the car there to satisfy the lender’s requirement of having an official diagnosis.
-HELLAFELLA-@reddit
Well if that's the case atleast take it to an independent shop now that you have the diagnosis. It will cost way less the going to a stealership
evilroadtrips@reddit (OP)
The independent shops don’t want to do it or are charging between $10k-$12k. I thought for sure we’d have luck with our usual shop but they said they didn’t want to tie up their lift with an engine replacement
-HELLAFELLA-@reddit
That's odd

Yeah

Where does it say that catalytic converter will be replaced?
evilroadtrips@reddit (OP)
I’m asking if it’s possible that it would need to be. I read a few posts stating that sometimes the catalytic converter can be damaged when there’s a blown head gasket.
Gunk_Olgidar@reddit
Depends on how long the car was run with the failed gasket. A day, no. A week, possible but unlikely. A month, coin toss. Six months or more, probably.
evilroadtrips@reddit (OP)
This is helpful, thank you!

For $10k it might be worth spending a couple hundred on a tow to another shop for a 2nd opinion.
Also, used 2015 ecoboost 2.0 engines run $2-3k including warranty. Might save you $2500 that could be used for surprises or other wear out items on a 11yo car (suspension, brakes, bearings, AC, etc.), or saved for a replacement vehicle down the road.

Thank you for this reply. I appreciate it.
I did call 10 shops around our area and 8 declined and 2 provided verbals. Apparently, according to one mechanic, they don’t want to tie up their lifts and equipment for an engine replacement. Other two gave verbal estimates, one was slightly less than Ford and one for $12k. Also, towing it there is a ridiculous bit of nonsense - $500 even though we have AAA. They won’t tow it because it’s not fully registered since it can’t be smogged.

Did ford never issue a recall? I know the 1.5s had a ton of blown head gaskets.
Sucks cause you should have sold it at the end of the warranty extension period.
Private Party for this car is $10k. DON"T DO THIS. JUST SELL THE DANG CAR AND BUY SOMETHING BETTER.
evilroadtrips@reddit (OP)
$10k for in good condition though - who’s gonna buy a car with a busted engine?
Warranty ended during the pandemic. We lost 100% of our business and weren’t even thinking about needing to sell our family vehicle. But yeah, shoulda coulda woulda.
And no, no recall. Told us to kick rocks. Actually ford corporate told us to wait for a recall. We waited several months - well we had to wait several months anyway because they didn’t have engines at the time when it initially failed.

Right, this person is saying don't put 10k into a car worth 10k.
A mechanic will buy it for a few k and swap in a used engine for a lot less then resell it for 10k. Or a part pull will buy it and sell the panels the trans, suspension, etc.
It's unfortunate but you're kind of in a no win situation. If you can afford to buy a new or new-ish replacement, that would be a better use of your 10k.
If you cannot and you'd just end buying basically the same thing for 10k, then you'd be better off to have one with a new engine at 10k$ than one without....so you fix yours. It's a rabbit hole you won't know until you go down it.
evilroadtrips@reddit (OP)
Yeah we know. No matter how we look at it we’re out a good chunk of money that we are working hard to raise but it helps to hear other input. Ultimately my concern is replacing the engine doesn’t resolve other issues it may have (apparently it has several recalls unrelated to the engine) and then we’re right back to where we started. Our credit is shot due to losing our business and despite working hard to fix all of that we still have a way to go before we can be in the spot to buy a new car. But whatever, everyone has their issues so ultimately this post is just trying to help me weigh which pile of crap to step in.
umrdyldo@reddit
Right so you sell it for a couple grand. Not pay 10k to replace engine and you go find something else.
evilroadtrips@reddit (OP)
There’s several reasons why buying another car may not be as easy as it sounds but I get what you’re saying.
The service advisor stated that the new engine would come with a 3 year warranty and that it won’t have the same issues as the previous 2.0 EcoBoost engines. Hence why we’re considering it vs buying a car the same size.
