Weird safety. Weird everything.
Why though? All in the name of getting a low bore axis?
https://impulseresearch.net/page-2/
Seems like the next key innovation in pistols is to figure out a way to mount non-reciprocating optics, a la the Alien. This... I guess it's a high power round in a semi-auto with easily controlled recoil. But we have 357 Sig and 10mm autos at home, so I'm not quite seeing the market.
If they made it a 44 Mag/ 45 Colt +P class of caliber, and it was utterly reliable, then maybe some people would want it for bear defense.
Takedown looks like a "no".
IRWildebeest@reddit
Yes for a low bore axis. It was sort of a design exercise over a long period of time to produce a low bore axis pistol for a powerful round. Because I am based in Australia I was limited to a .357 Mag (9mm limit on calibre). Going down this design path revealed other features of the novel design not in other pistols which I have not disclosed as yet. The pistol is not in production, it is a prototype to show that the new mechanism works. I would like to go to .44 Mag, .45 Colt and .454 Casull but I am restricted here in Australia. The disassembly of the pistol is quite easy and straight forward. Many have wanted to see it disassembled but I am waiting for Ian McCollum to visit Australia. : ) Cheers. Bernard. (inventor of the Wildebeest) PS I have a version 2 design with a thumb safety. The safety on the prototype was for local approval requirements.
jedburghofficial@reddit
Props to you for a remarkable design.
I'm in Australia too. When the time is right, I'd be very interested to see one.
IRWildebeest@reddit
Thanks. Unfortunately, I think there is only ever going to be the prototype. Cheers. Bernard.
dreyus6@reddit
A one of one. That just makes this extra cool.
Thank you for making this thing a reality and sharing the results.
IRWildebeest@reddit
Thanks.

Could you try your hands with wildcats ? I've heard about 9mm Dylon. And more exotic 9mm and bellow ? .357 maxium, that necked down .44 the new automag gun can be chambered in ? I know 10mm isn't an option but at the muzzle it and a 357 are comparable… wouldn't 7.5mm bruno work well with that design?
IRWildebeest@reddit
I could do the various wildcats but it's not worth the effort at this stage. The Wildebeest will probably not go into production, and I am working on a new low bore design for 9mm Luger. I don't think 7.5mm will work in the Wildebeest design. There's a lot of steel to move which needs momentum and not kinetic energy (a physics thing). Cheers. Bernard.
Heptanitrocubane57@reddit
Noted ! I wonder if you could get the blueprints out there for gunsmiths to manufacture it. With that whole kinetic energy/momentum thing I suppose that .327 magnum isn't an option?
IRWildebeest@reddit
I could get the blueprints out there but not for free : ) None of the major makers I've contacted are interested at this stage. Probably too niche or radical or whatever. If some small manufacturer contacted me I'd be open for discussions, it just depends. I hadn't heard of the .327 magnum. Just looked it up and it seems like it might not be suitable, the bullet is relatively light. Cheers. Bernard.

Very cool! It's always great to see innovation no matter what direction it's in, and it's about a million times easier for me to criticize from an armchair than for you to have made a functional prototype.
What do you imagine as the ultimate application/ end point/ raison d'etre for this technology? What's your "elevator pitch" for the advantage in doing it this way?
Can you do bottlenecked cartridges in Australia as long as they neck down to 9mm, like 357 Sig?
IRWildebeest@reddit
I'm fine with comments on the internet. I've been fielding them for about a year now since Mark Serbu's video and some Reddit and X posts. I've heard just about everything but I do like responding to them to clarify and enlighten : ) I don't know if I ever thought of an end application, I just saw an area of gun design that hadn't been looked at. And it's not until you explore that area that you discover what can be done. Clearly the market area for the Wildebeest is in the Deagle sector. So it's mainly a range toy I guess (possible bear stuff in the US) with better handling characteristics. But the main point for me is that it takes my mind into areas that you wouldn't normally think about. The Wildebeest has led to me my latest pistol invention which is currently being worked through. This new one should cover 9mm and a bit stronger, so it has a wider audience. I can't say much more about it until I patent it in about a year or so. Regarding bottle-necked to 9mm, that seems to be possible here in Australia but I don't need to go down that path really, since if I were to have a licence to manufacture here I would be able to do calibres larger than 9mm. (I had the Wildebeest prototype made overseas and imported it.)
No-Pay-4350@reddit
Hmm, I like it. Weird, but innovative. What inspired the slide design, the Laugo or early semi-autos? Capacity? Looks fun to shoot.
IRWildebeest@reddit
Thanks. Since it is a prototype, I wanted it simple to machine hence chamfered edges. I sloped the muzzle end to emphasise that the barrel is down low, not at the typical position (that to be honest is inspired by the Alien). The Wildebeest uses a modified 9-round Desert Eagle magazine. Cheers. Bernard.
florpynorpy@reddit
That’s one sci-fi ass gun, and I’m not complaining it’s cool looking
IRWildebeest@reddit
For those who would like some sexy photos of the Wildebeest, I posted some in r/guns and r/GunPorn . Cheers. Bernard.
Username_St0len@reddit
reminds me of the HK G11 for some reason
GunFunZS@reddit
IIRC they have Mark Serbu manufacture those.
SuperThiccBoi2002@reddit
Okay nevermind I don't want one
GeniusBandit@reddit
That's one authoritative sounding handgun.
Probably a testament to the power of proper audio gear more than anything but still, really nice sounding.
IRWildebeest@reddit
I don't know about proper audio gear, I just used my cheap smartphone for the video. Comments from other members at my pistol club say its loud. Apart from being a .357 Magnum, I think it has a high breech pressure at case extraction but I am not sure. Muzzle velocity is slightly better than a Deagle. A comparison can be found in the members section of my website www.impulseresearch.net. Cheers. Bernard (inventor of the Wildebeest)

357 mag

Very little recoil for 357
