Doubt it. Cutting edge nodes are fully booked. Every wafer they sell nintendo on 3nm is a wafer that could've been used for high margin AI chips instead.
It's probably preferable for "leather jacket man" if Nintendo uses chips that a generation or two behind since those aren't as highly coveted.
You're right, thanks for the correction. The same argument still applies to 4N though. If you want to be specific, technically they're constrained by advanced packaging like SOIC and CoWoS.
Ya if its a big game and not from Nintendo then i wont get it cus i know it will run like crap lol. Now if its mario and splatoon games, those are going to be great. Hope we can change fps limit tho
Literally bought a switch one less than a year ago knowing 2 was in imminent. I just want to play some casual, not performance intensive games. Might buy switch 2 5-6 years from now!
While I know Nintendo games were never about high end specs. Them never mentioning the SoC front and center means that it's some kind of an aging chip. Just makes me wonder, why haven't they used a newer Nvidia chip, or AMD, or even a Snapdragon X elite. yes it was to keep the price at 450$, but what if you were the first to make a handheld console quality games with a powerful modern ARM SoC. It might seem like a small gripe, but look at the state of TOTK when it first came out, or look at how modern Pokémon games look. The hardware is clearly due for an upgrade to allow these games to develop more freely
I always worry that the battery is going to go nuclear since it's constantly in the dock. You can't even mod it to go without a battery since the switch won't boot without a battery installed.
I know these aren’t hard specs, but the article summarises the main specifications Nintendo discussed at the Direct.
1080p screen
Up to 120 fps screen on the console
LCD screen with HDR support
Joy-Cons attach magnetically
360° sound support
An updated adjustable stand
256GB of internal storage
4K support via the dock with compatible games
Built-in fan and cooling in the dock
They also showed that Metroid Prime 4 had 4k60 and 1080p120 modes (quality/performance). I have a feeling 4k120 output won’t be supported at all.
Appears MicroSD Express support only for the MicroSD card slot! This is going to be the first mainstream/widespread usage of this protocol that I’m aware of.
Also interesting: active cooling in the dock, but from the graphic they showed, it’s unclear if the fan provides any real cooling support for the console itself. May be just for the dock components and ensuring they don’t overheat while next to the console has a heat source.
I thought I saw that, thanks for confirming! I don’t think it’s going to be a huge issue, it’s not going to be getting anywhere close to 4k120 for the majority of games.
Yeah, only downside is just less smooth menu UI but not a big deal, seems like there is a native 1440p output option in the settings as well so maybe for people with a 1440p high refresh monitor (me) we can still get smooth system UI while connected to a >1080p display.
MizunoZui@reddit
There are virtually no specs in terms of SoC from this reveal. Nvidia isn't even name dropped.
Duraz0rz@reddit
Official tech specs mention that it's a custom Nvidia SoC - https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/tech-specs/
cesaroncalves@reddit
Then Nvidia when back on their word and started doing custom chips again.
Corrupt_Power@reddit
"Custom" probably means something like a Tegra Orin with maybe slightly bumped clock speeds or something. I doubt it's truly custom.
cesaroncalves@reddit
Probably, but it's still strange, they didn't change for Apple years ago, why now that the gamming market is a tiny piece of their profits?
FugitiveFromReddit@reddit
Because their other plans with AI and such aren’t panning out the way they wanted. They’re probably getting more desperate after wasting so much money
Raikaru@reddit
How are they not?
FugitiveFromReddit@reddit
They got outpaced by China who got extremely cheap AI working right after they blew tons of money on R and D
Raikaru@reddit
Nvidia got outpaced by China? What?
Earthborn92@reddit
The Switch is extremely high volume.
cesaroncalves@reddit
So is Apple, they still refused at the time.
MizunoZui@reddit
Thank you, they're hiding a lot of info on this page. UFS, 2560x1440 120Hz support, VRR, Wi-Fi 6
Zentrii@reddit
I wonder if it’s at least as powerful as a ps4 pro
World-of-8lectricity@reddit
The charging times look terrible, especially at these prices.
Earthborn92@reddit
I'm surprised. My Wii has an ATi logo on the physical Shell of the device.
How did Nvidia pass up this marketing opportunity?
Dangerman1337@reddit
Leather Jacket Man salty Nintendo didn't use a more up to date SoC.

Nvidia isn't even using 3nm for their AI chips my guy.

Upgraded to the capabilities of a 2018 iphone, wow. lol
World-of-8lectricity@reddit
The iPhone X used an Nvidia chip with a 2020 architecture? 🤡 Think before you write.
ClarkFable@reddit
Doesn't mean it wasn't more powerful. Have fun playing your fisher price games in 1080p at 25fps.
World-of-8lectricity@reddit
he GPU of the iPhone X has 0.41 TFLOPS—who are you trying to fool? You really don’t think at all, as can be seen in your comment history.
ClarkFable@reddit
You comparing entirely different architectures. You don't know what you are talking about.
World-of-8lectricity@reddit
As if Apple has a better GPU architecture than Nvidia—you don’t actually believe that yourself lmao
World-of-8lectricity@reddit
Your Source= Trust me bro
FugitiveFromReddit@reddit
Have fun playing your generic Ubisoft sandboxes in 4k then I guess
Kursem_v2@reddit
and yet 2018 iphone barely has video games to play¯\\(ツ)/¯
dirthurts@reddit
Hot take, some of those games (Elden ring) looked like they were running sub 30 fps.
Skeptical.
grumble11@reddit
Elden ring doesn’t run very well on consoles in general - I get inconsistent frame rates on a PS5, and this has the power of a PS4.
Repulsive_Bit1455@reddit
Probably an early build. It'll run better on release
dirthurts@reddit
I've heard that about every From game to be fair.
Hopefully just normal From Software jank. The Nintendo stuff looked buttery smooth.
No_Afternoon6748@reddit

Rumors have said dev kits went out late. Could be they didn't have time to optimize yet.
conquer69@reddit
It's From, they aren't optimizing shit either way.
Stahlin_dus_Trie@reddit
Our game isn't running smooth? Your hardware needs to git good
TheNiebuhr@reddit
Imagine if Todd Howard were FromSoft boss.
Brisslayer333@reddit
Well, apparently they were developping a god damn exlusive title for the console so I'm assuming they've had enough time with the hardware.
djmakk@reddit
LCD huh. Was expecting an OLED. And no info on the chip.
Integralas@reddit
OLED version will be released later. How else they can the double-dip? Everyone will be buying it again anyway.
conquer69@reddit
Might take a while to source oled screens with VRR too. The steamdeck oled doesn't have VRR.
BakedSalami@reddit
Wait around for a few years for an OLED release just to have it come without vrr 😂 Ill be salty.
fntd@reddit
Everyone? I think the majority of the Switch target group doesn't really care about an upgrade like that.
ExtendedDeadline@reddit
Literally bought a switch one less than a year ago knowing 2 was in imminent. I just want to play some casual, not performance intensive games. Might buy switch 2 5-6 years from now!
spicesucker@reddit
It’s probably one of those things though where anyone who has an OLED one will probably hold off on one.
You rarely hear of people “upgrading” an OLED display for an LCD one, the improved contrast is massive for perceived image quality.
Osmirl@reddit
Im gonna wait for the oled version again
Repulsive_Bit1455@reddit
They never give tech specs in a direct. Might come out later in a press release
Logical-Database4510@reddit
What I'm interested in is if Nintendo went with a 120hz screen so we can have vrr on the device with LFC.
I very much doubt it, but if you're going LCD it's a nice value add. It's what Asus did with the rog ally 🤷♂️
MrMichaelJames@reddit
No oled no sale for me. I can wait.
Earthborn92@reddit
It's 120Hz at least
Retticle@reddit
This way they can sell it to people twice.

No OLED is a bummer. I really hope it's a Mini LED screen then.
Normal LCD would suck hard and HDR would look like shit.
Repulsive_Bit1455@reddit
Can you have HDR on a normal LCD? I don't think so, the blacks need to be deeper for HDR so I imagine it'll be mini led/ have local dimming
PXLShoot3r@reddit
You can call every garbage LCD panel HDR capable. Every 400 bucks TV is officially HDR capable. It will play back HDR but look like shit of course.
I really hope it will have local dimming and at least close to 1000 nits.
elephantnut@reddit (OP)
at best we’ll get wider colour gamut and better tone mapping, but those aren’t even a guarantee.
there’s no way it’ll be miniLED, it’ll be a regular LCD display and the HDR ‘support’ will just mean that the display will be accepting an HDR signal.
shadowtheimpure@reddit
I really wish they'd announce a cut-down console only version (no battery, no screen) for those of us whose switch never leaves the dock.
0pyrophosphate0@reddit
Yeah. I want the opposite of a Switch Lite.

There was a slide specifically saying 4k output was limited to 60hz, so likely HDMI 2.0b rather than anything newer.

Two_Shekels@reddit
Wondering if that dock will be backwards compatible with the old Switch. Would be nice to be able to swap them out
supershredderdan@reddit
120hz handheld means potential for 40fps modes in heavier games that can’t hit 60
conquer69@reddit
The lack of 120hz at 4K means people docking it to a 4K60 screen won't get 40 fps I think.
Komotz@reddit
This is info that was leaked months ago.
tensei-coffee@reddit
4k 120 is extremely wishful thinking. switch 2 is finally catching up to LAST GEN. 4k 120 wont be available until next console
spawnkiller97@reddit
I'm thinking there's more CPU sauce then what was leaked no way in HAAAILL EVEN WITH FRAMEGEN could you get 120fps on a very underclocked mobile CPU.
Darkknight1939@reddit
Cortex A78 has better IPC than Zen 2. Even with pretty moderate clocks here it's a massive CPU upgrade.
burd-@reddit
120fps in selected games.
spawnkiller97@reddit
That's with every system though. First party even with switch visuals at high fps would be nice
Earthborn92@reddit
Eh, it should be difficult for indie 2d side scrollers.
