I found out where fellow GEN-Xers flock to...

..apparently, it's the discount or grocery store before 7:30am. As I perused the sparsely populated aisles of my local Walmart this AM, proudly nodding my head (80s style) to Rock the Casbah by The Clash being played over the store PA system, I noticed something interesting: the majority of the other customers in the store were other men, let's say, above the age of 40. Everybody had either a touch of gray, a full head of gray, or a conspicuous Just for Men induced absence of gray (I'm looking at you, Michael Irvin).
Who else tries to get to the discount or grocery store before 8am?
celticfrog42@reddit
Well, in my youth, I loved hitting the grocery store at midnight just to shop by myself, so with age, it stands to reason, I would love to have my shopping done before 8am. lol Nods in your general direction dressed in my favorite black t-shirt, black jeans, and docs at 6:30am.
Pinkbeans1@reddit
That was the best. No one there but me and the store employees stocking shelves & the bell at the register. I’d always just stop and let them know I was ready. Peaceful.

Don’t forget browsing for late night VCR viewing in the video section!
oscar-the-bud@reddit
You need to leave by 8:15. The boomers just finished lunch and are ready to wreak havoc at the store.
External-Dude779@reddit
Especially true in Florida. By 830 the nursing home vans pull in and stop right in front of the door and they exit one by one, at their leisure
CommissarCiaphisCain@reddit
This brings back memories. Worked at Sears in the 80’s, and it was a mall anchor store. The retirement home vans would drop the residents off to wander the mall aimlessly for a couple hours. It was pretty often I had to escort some poor lost soul to the pickup spot.
SmartyFox8765@reddit
Sounds like the mall I worked at in Boca Raton🙀

HA! Gardens Mall in PBG
New-Assistant-1575@reddit
I can’t translate, what’s PBG?
CommissarCiaphisCain@reddit
Oh sorry about that. It means Palm Beach Gardens, a suburb of West Palm Beach, Florida. The person I was responding to mentioned Boca Raton, which is about 45 minutes south of Gardens.

I interviewed for a job in Delray Beach in the late 90s. At the time, I had never seen so many Mercury Grand Marquis. Nowadays, I find myself thinking, "That Toyota Avalon is a nice car!"

I have formed a mental picture of this and it is the greatest thing I have thought about in at least 3 days.

JokeEuphoric2296@reddit
Haha, yes, and go to the fresh donuts area in the store. I am 53F and always shop very early on the weekends. That’s when all the guys our age are grocery shopping too. I would say at least 50% of the time I’m getting a donut, there’s a guy there my age and we always say pleasantries to each other. Mind you, I’m happily single and these men are buying donuts for their wives and kids, but I never realized how many people I could meet just by buying a fresh donut every week!
sassystew@reddit
I'm great single, but also wouldn't hate finding the right partner! I guess I'm gonna start eating donuts, lol.

SlowPokeInTexas@reddit (OP)
I've been an early-bird my entire life. I reckon that even on weekends, wanting to be asleep by about midnight saved me from myself a lot more than I'd like to admit. I remember going out on a horrible date in NYC on a Friday night in the early 90s and all I could think about at the time was that I'd wished I'd just gone home and watched Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, which was being broadcast that evening and gone to sleep afterwards.

Well I am waking up earlier these days. 7:20 a.m. seems to be my spot. But I luxuriate in my morning. Coffee on the back deck. Maybe some garden work, before I shower and push off for work. So the evenings are great for grocery shopping, especially Saturday night when everyone else is doing “other” things.

Where I live, 7-9am is absolutely all boomers, except me, but I was shopping with my friend who is in his late 60s, at his preferred grocery time. I shop late afternoon or late evening. PugLove8@reddit

susitucker@reddit
One reason I don’t shop at Aldi very often is that they open so late. Where I live it’s around 9 am, and I like to hit the stores early early. Anyway, yesterday I walked into a grocery store around 7 am, and the music was kinda loud, but it was 80s new wave stuff, and I felt at home! Like, I had never felt like I wanted to stay at a grocery store longer than necessary just because the music was good.
PugLove8@reddit
I sing whenever a song comes on that I like, and sometimes I’m not even aware I’m doing it! About 10 years ago I was singing the Eurythmics “Missionary Man” out loud in the grocery store and got embarrassed when I turned the corner down the aisle and a woman caught me singing it! I was relieved when she said she was enjoying my singing encouraged me to continue 😅.

tunaman808@reddit
I go early afternoon. There are two Walmarts near me - one in my actual town here in North Carolina, and another just over the line in South Carolina. The drive tends to be about the same, owing to awful traffic in my town.
I usually go to the NC one if I'm already in town running other errands. But if I'm at home and think "I need to go on a Walmart trip", I go to the South Carolina one.
Part of it is that it's just a much nicer store that's better at keeping things in stock than my town's WM. Another is that it's in SC, which doesn't have sales tax on most grocery store food (NC charges 2% on staples and 3% on most "prepared foods" like frozen pizza or ready-to-eat meals).
I can't lie: a big part of it is that in early afternoon the SC Walmart gets overrun with hawt trophy wives in yoga pants, while the NC Walmart tends to be filled with "People of Walmart"-type folks.
It's such a "thing" in my house that if I were to tell my wife about "seeing a woman at Walmart who looked just like Scarlett Johansson" or "seeing a couple at Walmart who weighed 1,100 pounds combined, wearing matching in 'howling wolf' t-shirts, who were blocking the entire aisle with their scooters" she wouldn't have to ask which Walmart was which.

Nothing more peaceful than shopping at Meijers at 3am. No screaming kids.

Hit the door at 6am and out before 7am. Usually time it right so the overnight stock is done but the place is empty and I don't have to wait at all to check out.

Othet than one-off trips when I need something now I haven't really been grocery shopping since COVID. Local store has free online ordering & pickup, they bag it up and just bring it to the car.

None of the stores around me open until 8.

Shopping? Too busy working and not enough money.

Too early to leave the house if I'm not working. And the sheik would not like it.

Not a morning person, and I work a late shift. I like to go shopping in late morning between 9-11am. The retired shoppers have left, most people are at work, and the lunch traffic hasn’t picked up yet.

I must be an outlier. I mostly shop on Saturdays, mostly in the afternoon, and mostly online for pickup, except at Aldi. Aldi charges more for each item when you buy their stuff online.
My beard is going gray, but I don't have very much at all on my head. Just here and there. Doesn't stick out because my hair is light brown. Balding though.

I keep track of when my local grocery store gets its trucks for overnight stocking. I am there first thing the next morning, everything freshly stocked.

I worked part time at a Walmart about 20 years ago and learned fast the best time to be there was before 8AM Mon-Sat and before 10AM Sun. Sunday was different because the early church crowd would be heading home by then. Shelves are as well stocked as they will be for the day, and you have a real chance and not seeing anyone for three or four aisles.

Our stores have sensory hours really early so no beeping machines or music. It’s really quiet and I love it.

I do 90% of the grocery shopping and go to Walmart for everything except meat and produce. Going early used to be nice because it was less crowded. Over the past 18 months that’s changed as it’s now full of those shoppers for pick ups and delivery. If I go in after 8:00, it’s full of boomers shopping as couples.
Male, some gray, hate self checkout.
