What food would like to eat more of but you wouldn’t because it’s not healthy ?

A food that you enjoy but whenever you want to eat you think it’s not healthy.

Bread. Like, fresh bread.
Carbs in general. Carbs = Happiness.
Accurate_Prompt_8800@reddit
Bread is healthy, I don’t get this myth that carbs are bad for you.
oli_ramsay@reddit
Wholemeal bread from a bakery is healthy. White ultra processed stuff from supermarket filled with additives and preservatives less so
slade364@reddit
Yes, the ingredient list for sliced white bread is worryingly long.
lurcherzzz@reddit
The cheap own brand pitta bread has surprisingly few ingredients. Bonus fact, every sandwich is now a kebab.
BillOakley@reddit
There’s a reason that the front cover of Ultra Processed People depicts sliced white bread
Revolutionary_Job878@reddit
Why is the jam so bad?
Accurate_Prompt_8800@reddit
It’s not bad, but say as a breakfast item it’s not exactly filling and having so much sugar means you’re going to be hungry in about 1 hour…
I am a runner and do around 100-140km a week, I eat all these things and don’t really have to worry about them being filling or not, I can barely get enough food in as is.
But for those who are more sedentary or trying to slim down, bread and jam isn’t the meal I’d advise them to eating personally.
Bforbrilliantt@reddit
Sugar is filling. Source: I mixed 300 grams into water, chugged it and was full till mid afternoon. Had 200 kcal skinnylucious soup (even more filling) and was stuffed again. Had I got the 1200kcal from fried food or chocolate I would have been hungry a lot earlier.
gameofgroans_@reddit
Do you find that upping the food intake gives you more energy to run? I’m a beginner runner and really enjoy the satisfaction of beating times and distances (although I’m still so slow) but I know I don’t eat enough and I wonder if that is why I struggle with energy so much. Aside from sleep I mean. Ie I’m supposed to be running now but because I haven’t eaten breakfast I just can’t do it. Sorry this is such a badly worded q
Accurate_Prompt_8800@reddit
No I completely get what you mean! Do you know how much you’re getting a day calories wise right now? And what’s your height / weight?
Upping food intake (aka fuelling adequately) is probably the number one driver for improving running times and enjoyment to be honest (carbs are the most important of the food groups by far in endurance sports). In fact, it’s advised not to use training for races like marathons as a weight loss method because the effects can be extremely detrimental.
Look up things like ‘Low energy availability’ and ‘REDS’, these are consequences of not really eating enough to fuel your running. Trust me, been there done that. Eat, it’s important.
Also make sure you’re hydrating well, water just isn’t enough - get some electrolytes in there! You can get salt tabs, or buy flavoured powdered electrolytes, or drinks with them in (coconut water is a good natural source of electrolytes). This is especially important if you’re a heavy sweater and as it gets warmer in the UK as well.
And then lastly, sleep of course is important as it’s when your body gets the time to fully rest and recover and heal. I notice the difference between the evening before sleep when my legs might feel a little beaten up, to having a good 7.5-9 hours and they feel like brand new! Definitely aim for as much sleep as possible.
I’m not sure if you’re part of the r/beginnerrunning r/running r/advancedrunning subs but there’s tons of great advice there as well!
gameofgroans_@reddit
Thank you! I will join those reddits too!
I don’t calorie count cause I’ve had issues in the past but probably about 1,800-2,000, about 5ft 6 and 11 stone - like I said I don’t eat breakfast which I know is bad and I’m just trying to find new ways to motivate myself to eat more and better which is super hard! But maybe seeing improvement in my running is the way forward!
Bforbrilliantt@reddit
Carbs are the most satiating form of calories. Fat is the least. That means jam is better than cheese.
dprophet32@reddit
I don't think people dispute whether it's healthy or not, it's more that in the UK it is incredibly easy to eat too much of it.
Accurate_Prompt_8800@reddit
What about in other countries? I don’t get what the UK has to do with it. Bread consumption is a very individual thing no?
I for one don’t even like bread that much, it’s my least favourite carb so I’d say I have it no more than 2-3x a week.
Remarkable-Wash-7798@reddit
Yes and no. It is individual but cuisines and access to food varies massively.
Having egg on toast for breakfast, a ham sandwich for dinner and then fish and chips with two pieces of bread for tea. Isn't universal.
Accurate_Prompt_8800@reddit
That sounds like a you / them problem tbh. Not everyone eats like that lol. It’s down to many factors including time / income / education and knowledge on healthy diets that determines food intake.
Remarkable-Wash-7798@reddit
And the two things I mentioned?
I don't eat bread very often but thanks for your concern.
orange_assburger@reddit
A whole loaf of tiger bread and half a pound of butter would not be healthy for me but damn I'd love to eat it
WarmTransportation35@reddit
It is healthy and filling but they also bunch up in your stomouch so it's important to not eat too much of it and to excersise to bur off the carbs.
Crafty_Birdie@reddit
Who on earth told you that? Firstly, you should chew food, not swallow it whole. Secondly, your stomach is basically made from muscle. It pulverises the food in it and, together with the stomach acids and enzymes, breaks everything down into a mush called chyme. This is then progressed through the digestive system. Nothing is 'bunched up.'
Our bodies constantly use carbs for energy. Obviously, if you overeat bread or any other food, you will gain weight, but the notion that you can specifically burn off carbs is not how bodies work.
WarmTransportation35@reddit
How do you explain the skinny fat body?
doodles2019@reddit
Easily. It’s where people are eating in a calorie deficit or at a maintenance level, but aren’t doing any or enough exercise to recomposition their fat to muscle ratio.
goof-goblin@reddit
It’s always down to moderation in the end!
AvatarIII@reddit
Everything in moderation though, bread is fine in moderation, the whole point of this thread is essentially "what do you wish you could eat without moderation?"
Serious_Escape_5438@reddit
Bread as you say isn't bad in itself but for me it's just too easy to eat too much and it is quite high in calories. Even if the topping is healthy.
Bgtobgfu@reddit
Yeah same. I’m pre-diabetic so I have to watch my carbs, plus if I eat too many I feel like shit. And it just makes me so sad because I wish every meal was just carbs. I love them.
Bforbrilliantt@reddit
Just have to do lean carbs no fat whatsoever. Start with low GI stuff until it clears up then you can add back high GI stuff. Still very little fat though other than what's already in rice, potatoes, dates etc.
Limp-Boysenberry1583@reddit
I reversed my pre diabetes by cutting out carbs almost entirely for a year, 3 years later I can eat them but they're mainly a nice treat.
crumpets289@reddit
Sourdough is a fermented food and beneficial to your gut! Eat away
Crafty_Birdie@reddit
Whilst it is delicious and fermented, and yherefore easier to digest, by the time it's been cooked the bacteria are dead - they don't survive much above 40c.
crumpets289@reddit
Aw, now I’m sad
Crafty_Birdie@reddit
Cheer up, there are many other fermented foods with live bacteria, and the bread still tastes good!
Secret_Oligarch@reddit
It's more that the bacteria will further break down the gluten in the bread during production. So the end product is more favourable for human digestion. Though, your comment was correct considering the one you were replying to above.
Crafty_Birdie@reddit
That's what I basically said- different words, same meaning. Unless you meant to reply to the previous commenter?
mannowarb@reddit
Bread is quite healthy, the problem is the ultra-processed shit that's sold as bread in 99% of cases
lodav22@reddit
I learned to make bread over Christmas and now I bake two loaves every Sunday. It is a treat which I look forward to every week. There’s nothing like freshly baked bread, both the taste and the smell in the house every Sunday morning!

The other two links you listed are about rice and potatoes
queenieofrandom@reddit
Yes because carbs aren't just bread
petrolstationpicnic@reddit
But we’re talking about bread here.
queenieofrandom@reddit
Pretty sure time original comment was carbs in general

This sounds like something slimming world consultants would say, like you’re allowed a full banana but not a mashed one. Even though it gets mashed in your mouth
queenieofrandom@reddit
See linked research in my other comment. It ups the resistant starch levels, either by freezing or toasting/reheating
Pepsi_E@reddit
Carbs aren't bad for you. Just need to eat them in moderation
StopTheTrickle@reddit
Processed carbs are the enemy.
You can live on rice every day 3 meals a day and not get fat.
The same cannot be said for bread
elethiomel_was_kind@reddit
There’s bread, and then there’s the nonsense available in supermarkets.
StopTheTrickle@reddit
Agreed, if you're getting good quality bread you're probably better off. Its not just empty carbs
Mousey777@reddit
Yes, sourdough bread is healthy, in moderation, as it doesn't contain any artificial additives or yeast, and it's fermented, so it's good for our gut (fresh one, not those abominations available in supermarkets, designed to be "fresh" for 2 weeks or longer).
Agitated_Ad_361@reddit
You’re a psychopath if you can eat fresh bread in moderation

Tiramisu. Just that.
DigitalStefan@reddit
Cheesecake. I absolutely love it. Texture. Flavour. Presentation.
Hugh_Jorgan2474@reddit
The trick is to have a lemon cheesecake, it's healthy because it contains fruit.
Abject-Lengthiness42@reddit
Much like by adding fresh lemon juice to my G&T it becomes a health drink.
Dear-Grapefruit2881@reddit
Wine is made from grapes which are fruit so wine is basically fruit juice right?
Bforbrilliantt@reddit
Cider and chips for your 5 a day.
MelodicAd2213@reddit

Abject-Lengthiness42@reddit
Quite! Fish and chips WITH mushy peas? Basically a salad.

Me either. I'm only a bit overweight, but have a gut (F53)/wobbly middle, and I know that's where it's bad to have it. A lot of these comments are like my shopping list/meal rotation. I need to change.

Crisps. I’ll eat any flavour. Love them. I’ve given up for lent though and so far so good! Although there are some days when I’m craving them so badly but I don’t give in. I‘be actually shed a bit of weight too from avoiding them.

Ice cream. I can’t comprehend how anyone stops eating it. I only stop because I’ve ran out or its become socially unacceptable to have more. I think I could polish off pints and pints. I’ve never hit a ceiling where I think i’ve had too much.
Sygga@reddit
Proooooooobably shouldn't tell you, then, that you can make ice cream at home with just 3 ingredients and a mixer. No fancy ice cream maker or churning required?
SilyLavage@reddit
I’m with you on proper dairy ice cream. The naff stuff with a bit of milk and palm oil I can take or leave.
lodav22@reddit
Yes! What’s with ice cream from the ice cream van these days? Last summer one of the kids didn’t like their tub of soft serve ice cream and left it overnight on the sideboard, the next day it had separated into water and some kind of mousse substance that felt like lard!
Dear-Grapefruit2881@reddit
My other half is the same. The face if I ask for a spoon! They feel deprived if they don't get the entire large tub to themselves
Sygga@reddit
For me personally? Anything with gluten in it
LewisMileyCyrus@reddit
I regret learning what % of mayonnaise was just straight up fat
placeintheroche05@reddit
I eat the lighter than light Hellmann’s mayo because it’s only 15 calories per tablespoon rather than 100 calories per tablespoon.
ApplicationKlutzy208@reddit
I mean, it's also 85% less delicious...
placeintheroche05@reddit
To be fair it’s not as good by itself but if you use it things like salad dressing you literally cannot tell the difference.
super_starmie@reddit
As a mayo fiend I can definitely tell the difference with lighter than light, ugh
Light mayo is absolutely fine though. I just draw the line at the extra light ones.
bornfromanegg@reddit
I agree with this. Mayo for deliciousness. Light mayo to be good. Lighter than light is only acceptable if you’re actively trying to lose weight but need mayo.
thatscotbird@reddit
I always use light mayo as a salad dressing, it’s something I continued long after slimming world. With lots of black pepper it’s a totally fine coating for salad!
djwillis1121@reddit
The thing that I find confusing about that though is that mayo is basically just oil emulsified with egg. If they get rid of most of the oil then what actually is it?
Low-Pangolin-3486@reddit
They use a lot of gums and stuff in place of the oil, it’s pretty rank
placeintheroche05@reddit
I try not to think about that 😂
SilyLavage@reddit
Fat isn’t inherently bad, we do need to eat some to stay healthy.
It depends on the recipe, but as a rule mayonnaise isn’t particularly high in saturated fat, which is the type that raises your ‘bad’ cholesterol level. Tesco own brand mayo, for example, contains 11g of fat per tablespoon but only 0.8g of saturated fat.
The NHS England guideline is to eat no more than 30g of saturated fat per day, and fat should make up about a fifth to a third of your daily calories.
LewisMileyCyrus@reddit
Just gonna skim that and take it as "some guy on reddit says it's totally fine to use as much mayo as you're using despite you not revealing how much you use"
thanks man, needed that. Fancy doing the same with cheese and Pepsi Max cherry?
SilyLavage@reddit
I mean, if you’re eating half a kilogram of mayonnaise per day then all power to you.
Some cheese isn’t actually bad for protein, and the main danger with stuff like Pepsi Max is the acidity. There’s no sugar to damage your teeth, so it’s not terrible, but obviously it’s not the best option in terms of dental health.
LewisMileyCyrus@reddit
What an enjoyable thread. Thanks buddy!
spuffyx@reddit
Pepsi max cherry id say have at it, there's no sugar and only a teeny bit of acidity, over 95% of it is water so have at it bro, enjoy your tasty water and just make sure to brush your teeth enough!
SilyLavage@reddit
The pH of Pepsi Max is about 2.39, which puts it in the same general area as lemon juice or vinegar.
GingerPrince72@reddit
How can I counteract it?
I usually rinse mouth quickly after drinking it.
SilyLavage@reddit
Drinking through a straw and rinsing with water can both help, I believe, as they reduce the amount of cola in contact with your teeth.
There's no foolproof way to counteract the acidity except not drinking cola, but I wouldn't worry too much if you're only drinking a moderate amount.
GingerPrince72@reddit
I've been drinking more and more, usually 2x330ml cans per day, occasionally 3 cans :(
SilyLavage@reddit
Well, start to cut back if it's making you anxious. Teeth are fairly robust, I doubt you've done major damage.
GingerPrince72@reddit
I get major cleaning, polishing, check every 9 months and it's fine.
Would be good to reduce though.
SilyLavage@reddit
Well, the power is in your hands!
slimboyslim9@reddit
And it’s cherry - so one of your five-a-day 👏🏻👏🏻
SilyLavage@reddit

LewisMileyCyrus@reddit
It starts off a cheese toastie being dipped in mayo but to be honest, particularly if I'm drunk, I think your description might not be far off
SilyLavage@reddit
I mean, as drunken snacks go I think you can probably inflict worse on your body. I'm not saying it's healthy, but it's not a kebab on a pizza plate either
Embarrassed_File_795@reddit

It's low bar, but Farmfood satay & bbq crispy chicken fillets.
I've had bad days at work, where I've arrived home & cooked all 6 fillets from the bag just to eat on their own, and would've happily eaten more and more until god knows what happened.
On the flipside, if Tuna wasn't high in mercury etc, I'd happily eat JohnWest Infusions for the Jalapeno version multiple times a day, every day.
lodav22@reddit
Nachos with all the sides. Like a pile of crunchy heaven with melted cheese, homemade chilli, sour cream, and guacamole!
Expensive-Scheme6817@reddit
Pork Scratchings- I could smash a bag everyday. In my skinny days I did as well!
ApplicationKlutzy208@reddit
I know what they are and they disgust me but god do they taste like heaven? So good but so so bad.
In Farm Foods occasionally you get Chicharrones which are a lighter version (relatively)
Expensive-Scheme6817@reddit
Not sure if we have a farm foods nearby tbh. But will check.

Bread.
Don't try to tell me it's healthy. I take one bite of bread and it lights up every sinapse and I want to eat the entire loaf. Then I'll be thinking about the loaf constantly and it'll torture me until its gone.

Not because they're unhealthy, but because my body reacts poorly to them, carbs. All carbs. the second I have more than like 100g of carbs in a day I bloat and get tired and awful. If that didn't happen i'd eat them by the kilo.

Curry can be healthy, depending on what ingredients you use and how you cook them.

It's not curry if it doesn't have half a block of butter in it.
InviteAromatic6124@reddit
I've never used butter or ghee in curry and they still taste great
-Po-Tay-Toes-@reddit
Fair enough. Some curried things are obviously great without shit loads of butter or oil but for a curry with a sauce it needs to have buckets of fat for me.
