ULPT: Getting past receipt checkers

Are you sick of being made to stop at the store exit and show your receipt as if you're guilty until proven innocent? Make it awkward.
After you leave checkout, you need to look distracted. I examine my receipt closely for errors, because that's how mama raised me, but you could be talking on the phone, reading the back of the shampoo bottle you just bought, etc.
"May I see your receipt?"
I respond, either not looking up from the receipt or glancing at the person momentarily: "Thanks, you too!" and keep walking.
If I'm feeling extra chaotic: "I love you, too." Works great on boomers.
This works best when there isn't already a line of sheep waiting to have their receipts checked, but I still make it work. I shop infrequently enough that they haven't caught on.
If you're like me, you've practiced being awkward your whole life. Put those skills to use!
tazack@reddit
Legally, only clubs can stop you to check receipts i.e. Costco/Sam’s Club. Walmart doing it is just putting a poor employee into an uncomfortable shitty situation with no legal bearing.
So I’m always polite, understanding it’s not their fault their corporate overlord is a greedy cunt, but I absolutely refuse and just say “no thank you” and keep moving.
Miss-AnnThrope@reddit
Like how the fuck am I going to hide a pallet of tomato sauce down up my shirt!
I still queue up though because I'm British and it's what we live for.
MaiHammyMawdul@reddit
This comment brought way too much joy to my life sad American life. Thanks for the laugh kind stranger.
Miss-AnnThrope@reddit
With love from your auntie across the pond, the one that moans a lot and says really inappropriate things whilst waiting in line because that's what we do.
AwwYeaa97@reddit
Whoa what . I need to traverse this pond
Miss-AnnThrope@reddit
I'll come visit you, how many birthdays have I missed? I've got a tin full of mint imperials and werthers originals
IpsoIpsum@reddit
Oooh do you have any of those little candied lavender flowers? Not because I like them, but because nobody ever believes me when I say they exist 😂
Miss-AnnThrope@reddit
PARMA VIOLETS!!!
Yes I do, I've still got some left from Halloween!!
IpsoIpsum@reddit
Oh my gawd 😂 my mom gave my some when I was very young (she's a mega-Anglophile, it's adorable) and touted them as THE ultimate in fancy-schmancy. I dutifully munched them one by one with a big smile on my face, and I have to admit, by the time I finished the tin a few years later, they had kind-of grown on me!
Miss-AnnThrope@reddit
You do know that the Queen of England (God rest her soul) officiated this light purple lozenge with a national status of the highest level of exquisiteness.
This light purple snack is revered amongst royalty, to not have royal blood and enjoy this delicacy is high treason?!?!
British are extra :-)
IpsoIpsum@reddit
I did NOT know this, but my life is far richer now with the knowledge. And, so, I have committed high treason?! That is just marvelous!! I can't wait to tell my grandchildren! (They won't understand for several years, but once they do, they are sure to be suitably impressed)
Miss-AnnThrope@reddit
Your name is on the parchment for execution by hanged, drawn and quartered. It was announced on the noon of the first of the month along with all other treasonous acts.
Do not fear, I am sympathetic to your cause and understand her majesties constraints are not feasible for most.
I will converse with his majesty Charlie old boy and request a pardon for your transgressions, hopefully he's had a successful fox hunt and in a relaxed mood to be amenable to your situation.
He said he'll send me a snap chat to update
IpsoIpsum@reddit
Please please please adopt me as your long-list niece?! I adore you already!
Letters_to_Dionysus@reddit
smuggle us a Cadbury egg if you can get one past the airport checker
Miss-AnnThrope@reddit
Reet nephew, auntie can fit 5 in a rubber up her arse and I'll tell the airport folk I've got polyps!!
Yummy Cadbury snacks for my babes xx
Bursting_Radius@reddit
The British ability to queue is akin to a super power, it’s truly an amazing thing to see.
Miss-AnnThrope@reddit
I could give a long and detailed reply on life in Britain linking back to our rich and dubious history including middle class verses working class but....
"don't be rude bigbad" that breaks it down perfectly in my opinion
B0xyblue@reddit
That’s not “legally” clubs can. It’s part of your agreement. If you decline “which you can LEGALLY do” they like any other store can LEGALLY refuse to serve you. It
Fickle_Finger2974@reddit
The punishment for a US service member not doing what they are told is court and jail. It is literally the definition of a legal punishment. That is what we call something when the punishment is jail, the law.
B0xyblue@reddit
You are missing the point. You have a choice. They can’t legally make you follow orders. That that would be called slavery. You always have the choice even if the choice has consequences there’s a fine point if you can’t make that distinction, you’ll never understand what I’m saying perhaps you should reread.
Fickle_Finger2974@reddit
That is the definition of legally. Legally = relating to the law. No one can stop me from murdering someone I just have to face consequences for murdering someone. By your logic murder is legal because they cannot legally stop me from murdering someone.
B0xyblue@reddit
The law doesn’t compel you to follow orders, or show your receipt. Why are you so obtuse. Unreasonable and slow to understand. GD dood!
bcrenshaw@reddit
Sadly at least in WA state. Any store can trespass you for any reason. So yes, you can skip the line or refuse to let them check it. But they can also trespass you and you, which means security is allowed to hold you till the cops get there and officially make a trespass request. Then you are no longer allowed to shop there. It’s a shot sandwich that has to be eaten in some way.
My tactic, put the receipt in my pocket (or get a digital receipt at Walmart) smile, and “I’m good, thanks” and never break stride. I’m not rude, just confidently continue.
Sooners_Win1@reddit
My Sams Club now has a fancy 3d scanner that scans everything in your cart. No more receipt checking. You can even scan your items on your phone, auto pay, and walk right out without a receipt.
BPKofficial@reddit
Scan And Go for the win. Our Sams Club always has every check out line with 10 people waiting to check out. It blows my mind how easy it is to just check out on my phone, while everyone waits 45 minutes.
Jethris@reddit
Me too, but how often do you miss things? I accidentally (I swear, it was an accident) missed scanning some food item and didn't notice until I got home.
If I was going to steal something, I would put it on the bottom with some things I actually bought on top. The checker looks for 3 items that are easy to scan, and I am scot freel
Careful_Promise_786@reddit
Right?? Like literally lines into the aisles on some days in my store. I'm in and out, it's amazing.
Practical_Ad_9756@reddit
Yeah, I love the Scan & Go. So quick and easy.
WinSysAdmin1888@reddit
The amount of people standing in line to check out boggles my mind every time I roll past them on my way out.
Christhebobson@reddit
Most likely because they're using someone else's membership. All it takes is a screenshot of the barcode. The membership you show when you walk in is already on your phone, so it really makes no sense to not check out with it. Boomers who insist someone checks out for them because they don't get a discount doing it themselves are probably the only actual members I can see not using scan & go. Especially since I've had a few literally tell me that.
Theunknown87@reddit
Moved somewhere that has both Sam’s and Costco.
I’ve haven’t been to Costco just because of the scan and go.
EuphJoenium@reddit
I went to Sam's Club for the first time in 15 years over the weekend. I was enamored with all the technology they use now. Including the robotic inventory checker that ran me over.
perseidot@reddit
I figure I signed an agreement with Costco. I signed fuck all with Walmart.
So I’m always pleasant with the receipt checker at Costco.
At Walmart I keep walking and say “Oh! No, thank you - but have a great day!” As though they’ve offered me some sort of service. None of them have ever done more than stammer.
There are good exceptions, though. This came up on a different subreddit, and another commenter said that she, a white woman, makes DAMNED SURE the receipt checker at her store checks her receipt and purchases - because he likes to stop Black women and go through their bags to confirm every item on their receipts.
She waits and tells him that she hopes he’s going to do as thorough a job checking hers. She said he told her that if she didn’t leave he’d have her trespassed. She said his boss and the media would be interested to learn about his racial profiling.
So now I watch to see it the receipt checker is hassling anyone else before breezing past them.
imnotsafeatwork@reddit
Exactly what I do, with a big smile on my face. It's always in the back of my mind that if they insist I'll say something along the lines on "if Walmart doesn't trust me to scan all items then they should bring back more clerks". I have never "missed" and item at the scanner. I know they have incredible security cameras and can look back if they really want to. No need to waste my time when I don't even want to be there in the first place.
tazack@reddit
My sentiment exactly.
zeptillian@reddit
Even they cannot legally stop you from walking out with your own property.
What they can do is cancel your membership for violating their terms.
quigilark@reddit
It's not your property until you've satisfied the terms of purchase. One such term is to have someone check your receipt. If they really wanted to they could take the items and process a refund.
WinSysAdmin1888@reddit
They still can't compel you to stop. Best they can do is cancel your membership.
quigilark@reddit
You're not required to stop. But they're also not required to let you leave with the items you bought. They can retrieve your items and process a refund if they really want to.
Azariah98@reddit
It’s not illegal to skip the receipt checker at Sam’s/Costco; it’s against their membership policies you agreed to when you signed up. The only recourse they have is to revoke your membership. How they would know whose membership to revoke, I have no idea.
ScrewedThePooch@reddit
Do you actually have to stop and wait in a line though? Or do you only need to stop and show your receipt if they walk up to you and ask for it? What exactly does the policy say around the receipt checking?
Remote_Presentation6@reddit
It wouldn’t take much effort to check the tapes, identify the checkout lane, and then identify you by the membership used to make the purchase.
Not likely to happen unless you really piss someone off, but possible.
Azariah98@reddit
They could do that, but I think you are drastically overestimating the amount of work these employees are willing to above and beyond for.
Remote_Presentation6@reddit
Agreed. Don’t make it personal, you’re good to go.
harceps@reddit
I will comply at Costco, but Walmart...fuck no. I also just say no, thank you and carry on. That employee at the door doesn't give a flying fuck whether my receipt is accurate or not and probably hates their life so I'm not rude to them, I just won't comply.
raddu1012@reddit
Sam’s club once had a line 10 minutes long with one receipt checker.
When you’re at the register, the cashier scans all your items. You walk like 30 feet from the register directly out the door lol.
I walked right past them and said sorry not doing it. Didn’t even care if they would ban me, they should have enough people to do the job if they want it done.
jupitaur9@reddit
It’s partly to catch if a checker is in on it.
hourknotty@reddit
Can you explain this to someone unfamiliar with these stores? How can it catch out the checker?
jupitaur9@reddit
The checker could be in cahoots with the customer. If the receipt does not match what the customer has in their cart, it might have been intentionally omitted by the cashier to benefit both the cashier and the customer, who know each other.
McBurger@reddit
They’ve got separate loss prevention teams that are also monitoring cameras from the back. If they see someone skip-scanning at the self checkout on camera, and then the receipt checker doesn’t catch it, then they’re in big trouble too.
eatingganesha@reddit
and if something was missed - it’s amazing how many people walk out with stuff on the bottom rack that they “forgot about”.
tthhrroowwaway20@reddit
Not partly. Mostly. They have no legal right to look through your belongings. They’re trying to pop the employees and accomplices.
Gold_Assistance_6764@reddit
You’ve given them the right to do it when you agree to the terms of membership.
Wulf2k@reddit
No, they still don't have the right to check you.
They have the right to revoke your membership and future entrance if you decline, but you're 100% free to leave without complying at any point you desire to do so.
Gold_Assistance_6764@reddit
Thats fair. I suppose it has a lot to do with how you are conceptualizing “rights” (i.e. natural rights, legal rights, ethical/moral rights, etc.).
tthhrroowwaway20@reddit
Sorry, I’m not referring to membership clubs. I’m talking about wal-mart. Sam’s absolutely has the right to check you.
Gold_Assistance_6764@reddit
Ok, and this comment thread is specifically about membership clubs so you were in fact (and apparently obliviously) commenting on membership clubs.
MIGMOmusic@reddit
He said sorry and admitted you were right, and you decided to double down and called him oblivious to boot. Sure he came back with a distasteful comeback but you were being a dick first and for seemingly no reason. People respond to the wrong comment all the time, a simple sorry and correction is really all you can expect.
tthhrroowwaway20@reddit
I don’t really care, Margaret. Go back to your miserable life waiting in line.
Gold_Assistance_6764@reddit
You seem lost. No Margarets here and we are talking about membership clubs.
perpetual__ghost@reddit
At any other store this is true. At membership stores like Costco and Sam’s Club it is a term of your membership and you’ve explicitly given them the right to do it by agreeing to their membership terms when you joined.
rhinohockey9@reddit
They absolutely have the right.
Albert14Pounds@reddit
Except in California:
(f) (1) A merchant may detain a person for a reasonable time for the purpose of conducting an investigation in a reasonable manner whenever the merchant has probable cause to believe the person to be detained is attempting to unlawfully take or has unlawfully taken merchandise from the merchant's premises."
ToecutterH@reddit
Except in every state that I am aware of. It's called the "Shopkeeper's Privilege," and is old as hell. It's what allows asset protection folks to physically stop and suspected shoplifter. Thing us, the employee has to actually belive that you are actively engaged in a theft to legally use that privilege.
What they do at Sam's and Wally World is not that privilege as they do not reasonably expect every customer of theft.
Which is why I walk past them shits all the time. I am an attorney, just not your attorney. Every state tweaks the privilege, so your mileage may vary in your jurisdiction. But I doubt it...
beardedwithchildren@reddit
They are required to have probable cause before stopping or detaining. That would require them seeing you select an item, hiding or concealing the item, and traveling past the last point of sale without paying.
Albert14Pounds@reddit
From what I read on this, refusing to show a receipt is probable cause. I went down the rabbit hole on the topic a while back and it's very confusing and unclear, but that's how the law is being applied in some cases at least. Not saying I agree with it or that it's a correct interpretation. Just what I've read.
beardedwithchildren@reddit
The standard of probable cause doesn’t change definition. Probable cause is required for arrest. Could a police officer arrest a shopper at Walmart for only refusing to display a receipt? I don’t think so.
Letters_to_Dionysus@reddit
refusing to be inspected probably doesn't constitute probable cause.
BengkelBawahPokok@reddit
Why greedy cunt? They just want to check receipts
tazack@reddit
Your logic is not sound. “Greed” has nothing to do with this. Better luck next time though
BengkelBawahPokok@reddit
I quote you "it's not their fault their corporate overlord is a greedy cunt"
And I asked you why you call them greedy cunt just for wanting to check receipts. Like what does checking receipt have to do with greed?
"yOur LoGic iS nOt SouNd. bEtteR lUcK nexT tiMe tHoUgh"
tazack@reddit
Well now that you’ve explained that you were asking “why are they ‘greedy cunts’?” I admit I did misunderstand your question, albeit through lack of punctuation and clarity. Not that I would typically be an asshole about that, but I did wrongly assume you were calling me that.
But now that we’re here, I apologize and hope that your real life is happier than your online life.
HalfaYooper@reddit
I had employees at Best Buy chase me out of the store because I just walked by.
krzykris11@reddit
Exactly my tact.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
It shouldn't do, as they aren't supposed to make a scene or follow up - they can't help it that someone has just refused to engage. So they should just move on to the next person.
izzyk@reddit
I’ve done this. Say no thanks and keep walking. It’s usually an older person any way, and they’re filling in the voids. They have a whole dept for loss prevention watching cameras all over the store. They should know when people are pocketing items or not scanning items before they finish checking out.
lelio98@reddit
They can’t stop you. They can only revoke your membership.
myseaentsthrowaway@reddit
I agree with your second point but what's the basis for your statement that legally only clubs can check your receipt? My grocery store has been checking receipts and I can't think of any law/reason it wouldn't be legal.
aboatoutontheocean@reddit
Because they have no legal basis to stop you from walking past and leaving. They can ask you to show your receipt, but they can’t force you to show it.
Lycranis@reddit
I had a guy stop me at the door cause I wouldn't let him check. I talked with the supervisor, and they weren't checking receipts the whole next week
HouseOfBounce@reddit
That depends on the state. Any retail employee in my state can lawfully detain a shoplifter with stolen property.
FirebirdWriter@reddit
I haven't seen the Karen who decided to do this with their boss telling them to stop at Walmart for a while. They decided to sexually harass me and ignore the security guard who was ushering me out the door. I think they fired her for the commenting on my breasts while digging through my bags. I am in a wheelchair and I chose to not drive over her foot. She told me off for having a cashier scan stuff. The joy of hearing the security guard telling her off as I went on my way is part of why I like that Walmart. They don't care except for her.
It's not acceptable or done where I am outside of Costco and Sam's Club. The locals don't play ball with this
OkeyDokey654@reddit
That’s my tactic too. “No thanks, I’m in a hurry!”
StayVicious88@reddit
At Walmart there is an option to have your receipt emailed only with no physical copy. Tell them you had the receipt emailed, don’t have your phone, and walk right by. They can’t stop you.
probably_beans@reddit
Or just keep walking.
ContributionKey9349@reddit
They can't stop you anyways. Just go. All of these excuses are so unnecessary.
Extra-Account-8824@reddit
yeah... just because someone tries to talk to you in public doesnt mean you need to stop lmao.
its like answering your door or phone everytime someone knocks or the phone rings.
waste of time and energy
probably_beans@reddit
You don't have to even acknowledge those guys. I've done nothing wrong; I just walk past them. If they want to waste everyone's time, they can get a warrant.
_Prncss_brde_sux_@reddit
Why are you all feeling guilty for not stopping? I just walk out without a care in the world.
ButterscotchButtons@reddit
Yeah I'm usually shopping with headphones in anyway. Even if music isn't playing, I still ignore people as if I don't hear them.
reduces@reddit
I was going to say that I've not had anyone ask for my receipt in ages, but I am also deaf so if I don't have my hearing aids in there's a chance I just waltzed past them and ignored their request... 😭
CouldveHadItAll@reddit
Exactly what I do. If they really want to double check they have the camera footage of me paying
PdxPhoenixActual@reddit
And several cameras in each aisle to watch for people stuffing things down their pants, in their shirt, bag, purse, etc. If they see someone doing that , showing a receipt or not, you aren't going anywhere... ideally.
_Prncss_brde_sux_@reddit
It blows my mind that people don't know their rights. They wait in line after they check out so the guy can look at their receipts. I just go around them and leave.
murse_joe@reddit
That’s my secret Captain. I always feel guilty.
KingSpark97@reddit
Walk out hoping I get that crazy worker that goes ballisitic so I can have a lawsuit
Kind_Mountain1657@reddit (OP)
That's no fun at all.
Devilotx@reddit
I just say no thank you and keep walking. I've had some reply no I have to check it, and I just hit him with the that sounds like your problem and keep walking.
Except when I'm at BJ's any place that you pay to get access to it's within their rights but when dipshit Johnny at Walmart's exit wants to check my receipt when he just watched me go through self checkout it's a hard no from me.
I will get confrontational if I'm not there with my kids though start asking questions Do you think I stole? Are you positive that I stole? Are you willing to bet that you'll survive the lawsuit that I'll file because you've treated me like a thief when I didn't steal anything? I'll tell you what I'll let you check the receipt and if I didn't steal anything you give me back 50% of what I paid out of your pocket.
Eventually they just Wave me through
Suspicious-Ad9555@reddit
MY favorite after they ask is to reply , "NOT TODAY SATAN!" and give a crazy eyed look and just keep walking.
GallifreyNative@reddit
Hold your receipt in your mouth, while looking harried.
brady_d79@reddit
No way, that shit is a carcinogen.
A-STax32@reddit
This would be better if receipt paper didn't have BPA and BPS in it, which are known carcinogens
MiaLba@reddit
Give it a big lick and then try to hand it to them lol
Kind_Mountain1657@reddit (OP)
Or eat it while making intense eye contact.
burndata@reddit
I literally pretend they don't even exist. I look right through them and walk right by them. There is absolutely nothing that says you have to stop and show them anything. The only exception being at big box stores like Sam's where it's part of the customer agreement that comes with the membership.
naughtyzoot@reddit
Walmart has the option to email your receipt. Why not just say you emailed it to a work email that you don't have on your phone?
SocialJusticeAsFuck@reddit
Just keep walking.
demiseofamerica@reddit
It’s illegal. Just keep walking
chunchicky@reddit
The receipt checkers don't even do their job properly. I had one ask to look into my bag once bc I was on the way to the beach and had my backpack, which at the time had a towel in it that I did not pay for. Well she pulled the towel out, asked me about it and I said I bought that over at WINGS on the Ave. She nodded and sent me off. Like at least if they are gonna have ppl checking maybe make are they are competent LOL.
SeleneDrake@reddit
Fun, for sure...but we can also just yell at Walmart directly. Like be very annoying by calling HQ every day, blow up social media. The door person just works there, they don't get paid enough to care about you. The company would also let those people face any amount of abuse rather than spend more money on cashiers. 🤷🏽♀️
ThatGuyHadNone@reddit
I like to hand them my receipt but then keep walking.
TacoLvR-@reddit
Oohhh love this! But what about want to return an item in the future?
ThatGuyHadNone@reddit
On the rare occasion it's something necessary like that I will just ignore them. I don't have the time to deal with the ramifications of stealing, so they can kick rocks.
Master_Practice3036@reddit
Same! My wife hates it but it’s so annoying for me to stop when I have an armload of random shit to dig out a recipe when I just paid. You want to make sure all items are paid for? Hire, train and adequately pay your cashiers so I don’t have to use self checkout!
lipp79@reddit
You only have to do this at membership clubs like Sam's and Costco since it's in their contracts. Walmart and other stores open to the public for free? Nope.
thiccDurnald@reddit
It’s not about checking your receipt for accuracy m, it’s about deterring some people from stealing
Master_Practice3036@reddit
I totally get that. But what if they don’t have a receipt? Are they going to do anything? No. So is it really a deterrent?
thiccDurnald@reddit
It’s not for people that are going to ignore the receipt checker.
Just because something doesn’t work 100% of the time doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing. Trust me these stores have access to lots of data they would not be paying someone to check receipts if it wasn’t worth it
TheBeardiestGinger@reddit
This sounds largely anecdotal and not based on anything aside from your own opinion.
afuckinsaskatchewan@reddit
There are mountains of data relating to shrink minimization in retail. That's why there's now facial recognition on checkout cameras, purchase tracking, and yes, receipt checkers.
source: I worked at a retail location in my youth with the single highest shrink rate for that chain in the US lol
Madroc92@reddit
And what their “mountains of data” show them is that 2/3 of shrink is internal.
Source: also worked in retail in my youth.
marichainz@reddit
It actually isn’t just their opinion because there have been extensive studies done on theft deterrents and receipt checking is one of them. Psychologically if humans even think someone is watching, they are less likely to steal. Even fake cartoon eyes can repel theft. Real panopticon shit.
thiccDurnald@reddit
Yep exactly. It’s not a difficult concept to understand or so I thought
Letters_to_Dionysus@reddit
it's theoretical not anecdotal
clarinetstud@reddit
Sounds like common sense to me.
Why would billion dollar companies want to lose money on tactics that don't work? Clearly some data must support it.
thatoneotherguy42@reddit
Its. Cheaper to pay one receipt checker than To pay 5 cashiers.
Janube@reddit
It is! It's called the Watching Eye Effect. Basically, the existence of someone or something telling you not to commit a crime while promising that they're watching will deter some crime even if it's a completely toothless threat. Sometimes, even am obviously toothless threat will work!
Psychology is fascinating.
Worth_Divide_3576@reddit
And then there's me, who gets my receipts from Walmart via text.
Know what the kicker is? I have e no service in Walmart, can't be assed to use their wifi. They usually don't believe i use my phone for the receipts and it's like.....you guys are the ones offering to send my receipt to my phone???
dirtymoney@reddit
It is a fuck you customer policy
Mijari@reddit
One time I went to Walmart and chose the text receipt option. I left my phone in the car. The person who stopped me at the door told me I need to go get my phone out of the car to show them my receipt. I said sure, and just drove away lol.
murse_joe@reddit
It’s about saving money by not hiring enough cashiers
ThatSandwich@reddit
It would really deter me from stealing if someone else checked out the products I'm purchasing and verified the receipt at the same time.
thiccDurnald@reddit
Again, just because something doesn’t apply 100% to you that does not mean it’s the same fir everyone. We gotta open the schools
quigilark@reddit
I just consider it part of the agreement to purchase items from the store. If I felt truly bothered by it then I would go to a store that didn't have it.
Comfortable-Will231@reddit
Nothing to do with self checkout. Receipt checks occurred LONG before self checkout ever existed.
It’s for criminals who steal. And people who go back into the store AFTER going to the cash registers. Happens all the time and it’s annoying as fuck. Why are you bringing your full bags back through all the aisles? Pay and leave the store you fucks.
MiaLba@reddit
I usually have a shit load of grocery bags and the receipt is somewhere in one of them. I tell them “you’re welcome to dig through all these and find it! I’m not sure which one it’s in but it’s somewhere!” If they want it that bad they can look. I had one guy start to search through them and then stopped and said never mind it’s fine.
Moglo825@reddit
This cracked me up for some reason. I can just imagine their confusion after you walk away 😂
defdoa@reddit
I bought a donut. We do not need to bring ink and paper into this. I cannot imagine a scenario where I had to prove that I bought the donut. Some skeptical friend?

ever seen the video of the dude who bought a single frozen pizza at walmart and got tackled by a cop working security?
Btw.... what do they do when you do not get the printed reciept option? Do they really expect you to wait for 20 minutes while they check the machine/footage?
xDUVAL_BRODOWNx@reddit
I do this, too! If they don't accept it, I'll just crumble it up and throw it into the trash by the exit. Fuck your receipt Walmart.
shuckit401@reddit
Do the same! They seem very confused by this move. I just keep walking.
SpeedingTourist@reddit
This is hilarious and made me laugh like a silly person. Which I am. Thank you.
McArthurWheeler@reddit
This is how i got my best response. She freaked out, seemed to be concerned she would get in trouble for keeping it following me outside.
ADMotti@reddit
I could be wrong but as a former Walmart associate I vaguely recall that they are specifically trained NOT to follow people outside bc that’s how shit escalates. Some people just don’t think anything applies to them…

I had a guy follow me outside and attempt to reach over my shoulder and try to grab my phone while asking “is the receipt on your phone?” When I walked past him and ignored him on my way out. I loudly said excuse you, you’re not touching my phone. And he said he needed to check my receipt. I told him he can check the cameras to make sure I paid for everything then. And kept walking to my car. He turned around about halfway.
ADMotti@reddit
Following people outside to confront them (bc idk, the worker wanted to be a hardguy?) is exactly what gets greeters and LP associates shot all the time. Makes no sense; Walmart isn’t gonna throw them a party for stopping a college kid from stealing a tiny bottle of nail polish—but they sure will list their job the next day if that same associate gets shot dead in the parking lot…
SnooPandas1899@reddit
if an employee gets shot/killed/maimed, there aint gonna be a memorial plaque made in their honor thats for sure.

You know the truth… they won’t wait a whole day. It’ll be up in hours.
MiaLba@reddit
Right. It was an older dude. The younger checkers don’t even give a shit. I genuinely don’t understand giving that much a shit if someone steals from the multi billion dollar corporation that pays me minimum wage. It’s not coming out of your paycheck. They’ll replace you in a heartbeat.
Joycee501@reddit
I like to hand them a different receipt, then watch the utter confusion on their face, sometimes I'll throw in a receipt for a significantly more amount than what I've purchased

I did this at Costco once. The checker took my receipt then started chatting to a coworker who was walking past. I gave her a reasonable amount of time then started walking, she got back to checking my receipt immediately.

I used to carry a receipt-sized copy of the 4th Amendment (protection against unlawful search and seisure) to give to receipt checkers.
Legitimate-Ad2395@reddit
I love the down voters because apparently constitution bad, who cares if it actually applies to them this is fucking hilarious.
JunkMasterson@reddit
The Constitution is pretty great. But if you are surprised to learn the 4th amendment applies to government overreach and not to private actions, then you are going to really be surprised that the 1st Amendment allows you freedom of speech and press against government actions. Corporations and private citizens can't still choose to make decisions because you say something they don't like.
The Constitution isn't some magic document that holds unlimited away and power. It is a legal document and a framework, but is applied very specifically and isn't a blanket that applies broadly.
Insert_ACoolUsername@reddit
You're on private property.
JunkMasterson@reddit
Which only applies to illegal search and seizures by the government.
And searches are never illegal if you consent.
They aren't physically restraining you or otherwise preventing you from leaving. 4th amendment has zero application in this setting until or unless a less a someone acting on behalf of the government conducts a search.
This has big "I know my rights" energy.
Jkjunk@reddit
I suppose I should carry a receipt-sized copy of Missouri Statute 537.125 (shopkeeper's privilege) instead then. It pretty much echoes the 4th amendment. No right to detain or search without probable cause.
JunkMasterson@reddit
Or say, "No, thank you."
Or keep walking and say nothing.
Asking for a receipt is neither a search nor a seizure.
I am not familiar with the Missouri Statue so I will not speak to it and assume you are correct.

When our local Walmart tried this, my wife and I worked up a routine where I’d look mad and she’d walk a couple feet behind me angrily complaining about something. Tbf they do have a right to trespass you and prevent you from returning if you don't abide by the receipt checker, but I can't imagine that happening unless they already suspected you of theft.
I don't hand my receipt over either way though. Once I leave the checkout my business with them is concluded and I don't like being treated like a thief

TongsOfDestiny@reddit
Detained? I said trespassed, which is quite literally the opposite.
That aside, (at least in Canada), if they have proof of you committing theft then the store's Asset Protection personnel have a right to perform a citizen's arrest and hold you until an LEO arrives to take you into custody
MiaLba@reddit
But what if you didn’t steal anything you just didn’t show them your receipt? Can they still do that?

InsuranceNo3422@reddit
I always pack the receipt in my wallet and since I'm not required to show it up on exiting i definitely won't queue up in a line of people waiting to exit, if there is a way to politely get past them, if they ask me for a receipt I usually just say "no thank you I'm good" or "have a good one", but tbh it is very rare that a store asks me for a receipt. The last time it happened was at Best Buy and I'd purchased a tablet, which was an item they kept locked up and you couldn't just grab one and walk around the store anyways - and when I went to leave the guy asked if he could see my receipt and seemed to be serious about it, and I just asked him/ told him, in a friendly conversational tone of voice "Hey you know I don't have to show you a receipt right?" And he responded that yes he knew that but he'd like very much if he could see it and I just kinda laughed, said "it's good to want things - keeps the spirit strong!" And kept walking. He did look disappointed but thats it.
Individual-Fox5795@reddit
Huh?? the only store that checks receipts that I have been to is Costco in that store policy. Maybe quit shopping there.
Objective-Hope-540@reddit
I'm fine with it at Costco. But Walmart and even my local Kroger brand grocer do this. If you DGAF to hire checkers to check me out I DGAF if I accidentally skipped scanning something. I once noticed I had when I got home but they way overcharged me on a sale item so I didn't feel bad in the least-- also it was at a Safeway.

Just say "no" and keep walking. Unless it's a store where you signed a membership (Costco/Sam's/BJs), they can't force you to show them. After putting everything in a bag, I was rarely stopped. They have cameras everywhere so I'm not sure why they still have checkers at the door. I use a credit card so it's not like they don't know who I am. Maybe a store security agent will do an AMA.

Its only when theres new folk (or Im not doing my regular shopping) where they actually try to stop me.
dv8lamb@reddit
I tell them no and keep walking. What are they gonna do? If they suspect me of stealing, they can call the cops and waste police time.
zeptillian@reddit
You can just say no thanks and walk past them. Or simply walk past them without saying anything.
Unless you are shopping in a private membership club(like Costco), there isn't anything they can do about it.
They have absolutely zero legal authority to stop or detain you for not showing them your receipt.
Big-Quality-4820@reddit
I’m not required by law to stop and show a receipt in a retail store. I simply smile and walk past the Walmart receipt checker. I’ve never heard a single one ask to see my receipt. If they did, I’d say “This isn’t a membership store. I’m not required.”
I am required to show my receipt in membership stores such as Costco, Sam’s Club & BJ’S.
Letters_to_Dionysus@reddit
you might try saying something like "this is my private property and it is not currently available for public display. I can arrange a private showing for you if you'd like to pay the admission fee of $20"
IrradiantFuzzy@reddit
I hate my Walmart for this. The exit area is poorly designed, and the line of mouth breathers waiting to get their receipts checked completely blocks the exit. This one girl hates me because I very loudly say that you are not obligated to let them stop you.
Moistgato@reddit
They only ask if you have things that aren’t in bags, just bag as many things as you can.
Deny-Degrade-Disrupt@reddit
I love when they holler "sir can I see your receipt" and I holler "sure" as I walk past.
They didn't ask me to stop.

Stainless_Heart@reddit
”NO” is a complete sentence.
Unless it’s Costco where checking the receipt is written into your membership contract, no other regular store has the right to check your receipt.
Once you buy it, it’s yours. If they think you’ve stolen something, then they can detain you and check and then you have grounds for a lawsuit.
I don’t let anybody outside of Costco stop me at the door to check, I will not be treated like a criminal just for being a customer.
Pinkgryphon@reddit
I look them in the eye, smile, and tell them to have a day. I just keep walking out of the door. I just shake my head at the sheeple who queue up to show their receipts at Walmart. Lol.

they used to be really aggressive about receipt checking one day I walked out and showed my receipt, they said Someone double charged you for this item, they took me back to the cashier bitched them out and got my money refunded super quick.

Before they ask for the receipt, I check their name tag and say have a good one “Brian” or whatever their name is. Usually by this time, I’m half way past them. Sometimes I just put my ear buds in and walk right by them, fully acknowledging them and say have a good one.

Not everyone who goes past a receipt checker has paid at a register, self-checkout, or guest services. Shoplifters wait for opportunity and will ignore, present an old receipt, or argue with employee upon exiting. Also customer who have believed they paid for everything may benefit from receipt checks. I don’t believe “shoplifting makes us raise prices”, but the store won’t call a customer who left items they’ve paid for at checkout or paid for too many items. Bottom line is whomever is checking your receipt at a store most likely isn’t having fun nor targeting anyone. They are told to check receipts and people wana give them a hard time like it’s their policy.
Beginning_Reveal_817@reddit
I agree!
I don’t like to be a cunt. But it offends me when they make me feel like a criminal when I don’t even shop lift anymore. lol. The law here is that you personally have to open the bag for them to look inside. So what I do is, I put the bag on the ground. If they wanna look inside, they have to do it. And they’re not allowed to. So it essentially ends in a stand-off and I walk out righteously.
I don’t why their store policy bothers me so much - it just does. One of my pet peeves I guess.

Just pretend you’re deaf. Don’t even acknowledge them. Last Walmart I was in had a receipt checker with a fucking sheriff sitting next to him, I just didn’t acknowledge either of them at all. “Hey, can i see your receipt? Excuse me? Receipt? Hello? Can you hear me? Asshole.”
Royal_Mewtwo@reddit
I just say “No thanks,” as though they offered to help me, and brush past. This is one of those few times that being a young(ish) male gets me negatively profiled.
antiBliss@reddit
You are not legally required to let them check your receipt at most stores. Once the purchase is done the items are yours and you have 4th amendment protection over illegal search and seizure. You can just tell them they're not allowed to check your bags and walk out.
Exception: warehouse clubs such as Costco where your membership agreement is contingent on them checking your receipts.
Mrdante84@reddit
Whenever I get someone asking to see my receipt (usually at a Walmart) I usually just answer “no, you may not” and keep walking. I’ve had a few overzealous employees follow me out to the parking lot and threaten to call the police, to which I answer, “Go ahead, I won’t be here when they come though” and that usually stops them. I’m waiting for the day when one of them puts a hand on me so I can make a huge deal and threaten charges against the employee and the store.
Thelaughingman___@reddit
Say no. Don't break stride. Unless it's Costco or Sam's club where the terms of membership you signed when you got your card required. Just keep walking.

Walmart allows me to choose to have my receipt texted to me. I just say “I texted it to myself, and my phone is in the car” and keep walking.
mhoke63@reddit
I do this. I try to look depressed and pathetic, like I just got awful news. I have an intentionally, slightly slow gait. Even if the alarm goes off in error, I just keep walking at the same pace with no change to how I'm walking. I've never been told to stop.
Present_Program6554@reddit
In clubs like Costco, you must show your receipt as that is a membership rule. In other stores the staff have no right to demand your receipt and you can just keep walking. Either ignore them or politely say goodbye. If they have evidence of you stealing, they can then call the police but they can not stop and search you themselves. The worst thing that can happen is the store can decide they no longer want your custom.
maralalac@reddit
I keep all receipts. I know I'm weird.
When asked for my receipt on the way out, I simply reply "It's in my wallet, thanks for checking." and keep on walking.

Don't do this at a wholesale club. They make you agree to checks when you sign up. You will get eventually barred from shopping there.

I was at Costco with a large cart of items and made the obligatory stop for my $1.50 hot dog. I always get nervous walking through the receipt checkers and I ended up handing them my hot dog receipt instead of the receipt for the items. That made them super suspicious of me and after giving them the right one they REALLY scrutinized it
ContributionKey9349@reddit
This is such a reddit way to do things. Just say no thanks. Unless you're at a warehouse club it is within your rights to do so.
gratefulandcontent@reddit
Sam’s club has these big exit archers where they take a picture of your items and it compares to your receipt some how. Some people are just nodded through while others are still stopped and they scan your receipt and items.
Yesterday I was with my husband and daughter. My husband had a few things in the cart and my daughter had her receipt and a box of granola bars in her hand. They nodded him through and stopped her and scanned both the receipt and the box for one singular $10 item. I always get stopped.
Is It random? Is it profiling? Is it the arch capture not taking a clear picture? I don’t know. I do know even with this new “tech” it is annoying and feels insulting because it always happens to us but not our husbands.

Here's a good pro tip for everyone. Having worked at bjs wholesale I can tell you from experience that we are not allowed to leave the front door post or chase customers. If you keep walking or refuse you to show me the receipt there is nothing that I can do.
The protocol is we have to call the manager over the radio. Managers hide in the back of the store. By the time they come to the front you should be long gone.
Warm-Iron-1222@reddit
You're making it way too complicated. I don't steal. But I also don't stop. They try to stop me and I just say no and keep walking. They aren't the police and can't legally detain you.
phathomthis@reddit
They don't even look at them half the time and don't stop 90% of people except for the people that lineup like they're at costco for some reason.
Also if there's nothing out of a bag (like a case of water) they don't even try to stop you the majority of the time.
They don't really do anything and it's lame security theater. I just keep walking.
Get on one of the 20 empty registers to help the long lines instead of standing there pretending to do something.

I live in the greater Atlanta area, and the Walmart near me is like what OP lays out, we call it the Ghetto Walmart, they got like five reciept checkers at each door and are super aggressive about it.
Whats crazy is if I go about fifteen minutes down another road in a different direction, John's Creek to be exact, there is another "Super" Walmart where they do NOT pull this shit. Its in a.. "I'm better than you, 'cause I live in Jackassy Crests!" type-type of area, and not only do they have the high end Walmart, there is also a Super Target - a Target with a grocery store built in, a Lidl, an Aldi, two Publix, and a Kroger - that I know of. Nevermind the Lowes, Home Depot, the old school TrueValue store; more.
That CAN'T pull that receipt bullshit in that store, the locals AB-SO-FUCKING-LUTELY have several other options, can and WILL stop shopping there, from what I've heard it's happened before and they scaled their bullshit back.
Matter of fact, going to this store feels more like a Life-Pro-Hack. The store is kept clean, they have cashiers actually on duty and its never self-checkout only. They treat you with respect, don't shut down half the stores aisles and disappear; its like stepping into an alternate reality. Sure, its a few minutes down the road, but its worth it, to be treated with dignity, and the store itself be properly respected, too.
I always FEEL like I'm stealing something. Like, I shouldn't be there as I'm supposed to be shopping while held hostage, in the trenches - not roaming freely, with a shopping cart, in a well stocked and clean store. How dare I ?!?!?!?!?
Krapmeister@reddit

Now at Walmart you can say I didn't ask for a receipt I selected to get one by email (or text) at check out.
Existing_Many9133@reddit
At Sam's they have changed to an overhead thing by the door and don't check receipts unless the alarm goes off.
At Walmart, fuck them, they do not offer a single line for you to be checked out, you HAVE to use self checkout!!!! I just walk by the receipt checker and say "nope, not a legal requirement" and walk out. If they don't trust me to check out my own groceries they can go to hell! I only go there maybe once a year if I absolutely have to cause there is no other option.
dogsled1@reddit

My understanding at Walmart as long as everything is in a bag you’ll never be asked to stop. But as the previous comments, mention, you can decline a Walmart check.

I get it if you have a TV or something, but checking a receipt when I have a cart full of bagged groceries? your not checking everything so why bother.
crosstheroom@reddit
I don't show it unless I"m asked, I walk out holding it and looking at it,
Nowadays the system knows you and they can flag people who they think are stealing they have cams everywhere and at the self checkouts too.
I don't mind if they ask. Usually they only ask when I buy a 20 pound bag of cat food and I always scan it with the scanner and I know what they are looking for and tell them it's the first item.
I think it's good that they try to prevent theft because that makes all our prices go up.

I personally snap. I make them check every item in my cart vs my receipt and tell them if they're gonna waste my time they better fucking do it right. Be thorough check everything.
