I appreciated the hell out of it. Watched the movie, got the temperature -based cup which would reveal hidden images from Burger King, played the kick-ass arcade game that's very much emulation-worthy.
This movie works on so many levels. He has a great backstory that is beyond being an orphan, he doesn't have secret or family or government money to work with, he has no mentor (isn't someone else's product) and even though he has done what he criminally does has a moral code that conflicts with his humanity.
The tech and the soundtrack are sub par but on track for the time, out of Val's control.
I really liked his documentary Val. He came across to me as an utter theater nerd. He was so in love with acting that he had to be utterly exhausting to people around him. He was very vulnerable about himself.
it was my favorite quirky movie for a while and the chemistry between them was so weird and fun. idk how to explain it but that movie legitimately only works with both of those actors, at that exact place in both of their lives. it just works. rest in peace king
Imagine having a career so rich your NYT obituary doesn’t even have room to mention that you were in “Real Genius” — a movie that blew my young Xennial mind: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/01/movies/val-kilmer-dead.html
This will forever be one if my favorites. Yes Tombstone is amazing but THIS is my favorite (and this is what men look like when they're sexually frustrated)!
An honorable mention to Top Gun for my first ever crush at 7 years old on Iceman. I'll be your wingman any day.
I only recently watched Tombstone, and he is now the reason, i am looking to watch more westerns having hated the genre previously. He was beyond excellent in it. RIP the batman with the best mouth under the suit.
When I found out he passed this evening I walked outside and told him that I enjoyed his movies and am grateful he made me smile, and thank you. (I don't have a religious belief, but I do think all of our atoms bonk into each other. Sometimes my belated grandma will bonk into Abraham Lincoln and then a dinosaur another day, style belief.)
I wonder what Tom Cruise is going to say? He was never making the sequel to Top Gun without Val. Even when Val portrayed Elvis in True Romance (1993), he was memorable. And he was barely in it!
Val looking a little like Martin Kove in his later years.
Both members of oddly extreme religions, too. Chemotherapy was against Kilmmer's faith, but he got it anyway. I hope being a Christian Scientist didn't delay his treatment any.

it has tons of old camcorder footage he filmed on all his movies in the 80s and 90s.
