Today I realized too late I was in the wrong lane on the highway and I decided to just keep going to the next exit. I injured no one, caused zero wrecks, and from what I can tell no one posted dash cam footage of me. It added 12 minutes to my commute.

I would go so far as to say his tires are likely properly inflated and his tail lights work.

Ironically I was driving my wife's vehicle, which we drive about once a week, and it has a expired as of 9/2022 registration which I understand is egregious, but at this point I sort of want to see how long it can go.

That's me with my Wrangler, its old enough for me to not give two shits about inspections or registration.... been riding it out since 2021... but hey, I've got plates, all the lights work, and my tires are properly inflated and matching!
KTCKintern@reddit (OP)
Right! At this point I'm pretty sure the amount we would have spent to keep the tags up is the same amount as we'll eventually spend on a citation so it's worth the laughs.
xanoran84@reddit
Y'know, I can relate. I let mine ride over a year out of date just to see if I could before I chickened out and finally updated it.

Don’t they fine you when it’s expired for a long time when you renew?
I hope not but expect so
xanoran84@reddit
There's no added fine, you just have to pay the full year's worth of registration IIRC

Not to my knowledge. It's possible since things change but last time I recall someone doing that, nothing was added on and it was out for awhile.

Damn. Reminds me of that time in Dallas when I was in the right lane and someone trying to get on the highway turned on their blinker, causing me to see it and take my foot off the accelerator pedal. I must've lost at least 5 miles per hour off my speed. This snowballed into leaving enough space for the other car to safely enter my lane while leaving enough distance between my car and theirs in case of I needed to stop quickly. I just took a deep breath and continued driving without a care in the world. Still haunts me to this day. I don't think it ever happened again.

Saw someone reversing at about 30mph back up a busy exit ramp off 183 today.
misoranomegami@reddit
I used to car pool to work and one of the drivers tried to do that once. Missed the exit and went to put it into reverse to go back to it while the rest of us were screaming "Forward! Forward! We'll take the next one!" I never did figure out if she was crazy or crazy smart because we never asked her to drive again. She still paid for gas but she never had to drive.
notadamnprincess@reddit
I did that once on I-35 driving an ambulance when I was 20 (not in Dallas). I had lights flashing and all, but yeah, I seldom had to drive again after that. Lesson learned for sure though - I had to practically peel my partner off the ceiling I had scared him so badly.
lurkingallday@reddit
I don't know if DFW does both payments at each tollbooth now, but it was always a rite of passage for newcomers to get in the wrong payment lane and have to back up to get in the right one.

noncongruent@reddit
In town where there are lots of exits and highway splits it's always a good idea to work out your trip before you get into your car, and pay attention to the signs. TEXDOT signs aren't always accurate or useful, but most of the time you can trust them.
KTCKintern@reddit (OP)
yeah this was where 30 and 35 meet and you have to exit and then enter and then go right but not that right, more like the middle right, and oh wait you could have just stayed on that road
noncongruent@reddit
Yeah, the intersection of I-30 and I-35E has always been a clusterfuck. Much if that is due to the fact that I-30 used to be the Dallas/Fort Worth Turnpike, a toll road that began on the east side of Fort Worth and ended on the west side of Dallas, near where I-35E runs now. The Turnpike just dumped out into downtown Dallas because I-35E didn't exist back when the Turnpike was completed. The lack of space and lack of planning for a future interchange between the privately-owned Turnpike and I-35E meant that over the years there were a lot of convoluted routes and connections until the entire area was fully reconstructed in 2015. At one point if you wanted to get from I-30 to I-35E southbound you had to exit to surface streets and drive along Riverfront Boulevard, then take an entrance ramp to get to I-35E southbound. The ramp was where Fuel City is, which is why Fuel City is there, to give people a place to gas up before getting back on the freeway. Here it is in the old days:
https://www.google.com/maps/@32.7676945,-96.8066657,3a,64.1y,258.9h,86.19t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1s9jE9O9UIpR8M2NR6lHU-AA!2e0!5s20081001T000000!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D3.810576228262505%26panoid%3D9jE9O9UIpR8M2NR6lHU-AA%26yaw%3D258.9044083278227!7i13312!8i6656!5m1!1e1?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDMzMS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D
Later, when the feds funded the construction of I-30 a deal was made with the Turnpike owners to sell it to the state and make it public. As a side note, with the reconstruction of the I-30 and SH360 interchange the last remaining vestige of the old toll booth locations are at the Loop 12/I-30 interchange, which is why there aren't direct connections between the two there.

If you ever want to look at how roads and highways have changed over time you can check out www.historicaerials.com/viewer. Roads and highways have been pivotal in the development of this country's economy, allowing the freedom of movement of labor and goods to an extent that was not imaginable just 200 years ago, or even 150 years ago.
suvinrk@reddit
Awesome, thank you! I think I will check out the website.

One cool thing is that the Dixie Overland Highway, the successor to the Bankhead Highway, ran across the USA from Savannah, GA to San Diego, CA, right through the DFW area. It was a single stretch of pavement tying the country together. The historic Civil Right's marches in Montgomery, AL were along this highway. The highway number was US80 (not to be confused with Route 80 up north), and you can still see remnants of it all across Texas and points west to CA. Old 80 was decommissioned from Buckner Ave west, having mostly been replaced by I-30 and I-20, but still exists east of Buckner. If you wanted to you could drive all the way to Tybee Island just past Savannah, GA, crossing through much of the historic south in the process.
KTCKintern@reddit (OP)
Thanks for sharing that! I've always appreciated how vast DFW infrastructure is and I'm thankful I can travel relatively easily in the comfort, safety and privacy of my own vehicle.

ThisIsMockingjay2020@reddit
Moving here shortly from Seattle, what am I getting myself into, traffic wise?
CanoegunGoeff@reddit
Semi-joking with all of the following, but here’s what you’re getting yourself into by moving to DFW, traffic-wise, and I bring this to you as someone who was born in Seattle, but grew up here in DFW:
The left lane is for felonies. If you’re not doing 10-20 over the limit, get out. A lot of the time, even the cops are doing at least 5-10 over. If there’s one around you, just match their speed and they probably won’t bug you. Just don’t be doing 90-100 over any hills, because you never know when there’s gonna be a motorcycle cop sitting in the left shoulder on a bridge with zero regard for his own personal safety. He might let the 20 cars around you going the same speed pass by without a second thought, but he’ll probably get you.
Generally, if the speed limit is 55, you’re actually expected to be doing 65. If it’s 65, 75. And so on. Except in small outskirt towns. Do the speed limit. No more. You may even want to do below the speed limit is small outskirt towns. The cops in these places are so bored that they’ll pull you over for doing .004% over the speed limit or for having an air freshener “obstructing your windshield”.
All the freeways suck. Regardless which one you’re on, there’s always going to be construction somewhere along all of them, and there’s also random congestion points that make little to zero sense in a few places along each one; don’t get comfortable riding close behind someone when you’re cruising at 70 and traffic seems light, because you never know when you’re suddenly going down to 3 mph. You’ll eventually learn where these points are and at what times of day to expect them to be especially bad. Sometimes though, it truly is random. Just be ready to brake always lol. Sometimes we just like to all collectively slam on the brakes for no apparent reason. Maybe we’re just keeping each other’s senses sharp. Thanks guys!
Treat freeway entrance ramps like you’re actually leaving the pits on Texas Motor Speedway. Never done that in your own vehicle? Definitely try it sometime, but in laymen’s terms, punch it. Meet or exceed the speed of traffic, or it’s gonna be hell trying to fit in to merge. People don’t want to let you merge. Idk what it is, but people DO NOT want you to join them on the freeway. You must enter faster than them as a sign of dominance which they might acknowledge and respect enough to not intentionally close whatever gap you’re aiming for. Especially if you’re driving a small car. The pickup trucks don’t see you as equals unless your driving makes up for your size.
If you’re entering a ramp and the freeway is backed up, some people might be nice and leave a gap for you to enter, since we all move faster when we leave space for merging, but about half or more of the population doesn’t understand that the rules haven’t changed from my previous point regarding merging at speed. They might still try to close gaps and not let you in, even as you’re running out of road before your lane ends in a wall, and in this case, you just have to be more assertive than they are and basically play chicken with them by starting to merge regardless if they’ve left space for you or not; usually, people will opt to back off and let you in than just letting you hit them. This has been my tactic for years, and I have yet to find someone who has opted instead for me to play bumper cars with them.
Many Texans don’t know how to yield (unless it’s at a roundabout, in which case they think a yield sign is a stop sign), and many Texans don’t understand how a dual turn works. Always expect the guy next to you to completely ignore all lines painted on the road. If you anticipate that every single car around you at any moment might cross five lanes of traffic suddenly and with zero indicators, you will find yourself well prepared to react when that one-out-of-ten wacko does in fact go for it. Always watch your blind spots, not because you’re about to get over, but because there might be some idiot about to just bump into the side of you because they aren’t checking their blind spots.
Sometimes someone might fly by slower traffic just holding the bird out their window for half a mile for seemingly no reason. Don’t take it personally. Sometimes people just lose their cool. Best to ignore them, but also don’t feel bad chuckling to yourself when you see them stuck somewhere way off in the grass median in another mile.
TL;DR,
We’re all insane, the roads are terrible, just be fast, know where you’re going, and be respectful but also don’t be shy lol.
KTCKintern@reddit (OP)
Seattle shocked me SHOCKED ME at how slow the speed limits were. Like 50mph on a highway. I honestly think Dallas driving isn't THAT awful but it's the speed that becomes the problem imo because 50% of the drivers on the highway are going 10% over at any given time. I think the infrastructure is pretty dope though. Like you can travel a few counties in 30 minutes. Even in highway traffic you're still going 35mph but it feels like the worst thing in the world because you know you've driven 65mph on the way home before and got home in 10 minutes so you feel entitled to that. I think Dallas drivers are a bit spoiled and we don't do well when reality fails to meet our expectations.
Where the infrastructure sucks right now is in neighborhoods and random streets where they clearly didn't expect 50 cars per minute to use this light when they built this intersection 50 years ago so now you have to sit at this random light in Rowlett for 8 minutes. Oh, and Princeton. Princeton did terrible planning building 10,000 houses but no turn lanes.
ThisIsMockingjay2020@reddit
When we moved to Seattle from MI, we were shocked at the speed limits as well. It took some adjustment and a lot of using the cruise control to keep from pushing the pedal to over 70 like I did in the Mitten. The hardest was in city limits. I got a camera speeding ticket our first day for doing 45 in a 30 or something.🤷♀️
Thanks for the info about Dallas. Sunshine, here we come!

Like, what in the hell am I looking at here. It's simultaneously glorious and awful. There's like 50 lanes of road here and it all moves so smoothly to send you in every which direction. But then some dude in an f250 with a trailer is definitely taking one of these exits at 82MPH bumping Limp Bizkit while scrolling Instagram.
ThisIsMockingjay2020@reddit
Da fuq! Good to know it all moves smoothly. I guess as long as I watch the road and signs carefully and my GPS isn't being slow and dumb, I'll manage it. 😁 It can't be worse than navigating the highways here, which aren't exactly smooth transitions.

I too didn't think I was above the law and following the rules while driving today. There is a street with construction that blocks off one direction (mine) for about 100 yards. It is on an uphill slope so you can see oncoming traffic. I still didn't take it even though it was clear and I could have made it. Took the 1/2 mile detour through the neighborhood.
That said, if you are ever behind me don't get mad if I cross over a single white line. I do that all the time. In Texas, that is literally a suggestion, not the law. So single white line cross away!

I wouldn’t endanger myself or other drivers by doing one of those last-second panic double or triple lane changes. Not worth it!
That said, I also know plenty of DFW people who have been fired for being less than 12 minutes late to a job. Maybe if bosses were more understanding and workers in Texas had more protections, not to mention better public transit and city planning that didn’t prioritize NTTA and road-construction cronyism, OP’s decision would be the norm and our freeways would not look like Fury Road?
