Suspected Russian drone flying over military research facility in Italy

Sorry for the Italian news article but I couldn't find the article in English; it did happen a few days ago but obviously the media talked about it only today. Apparently a suspected Russian drone was found flying above a military research facility in Northern Italy; the 72 hour bag the EU suggested preparing seems like a better idea day by day...

It wasn’t super widely reported but all those unidentified flying things over the UK (and US in Uk) military bases were found to be linked to Russia, and assumed to be Russian drones. It did make the news here but I was surprised more wasn’t made of it.

You sure? I've got quotes from FAA and DoD that make it sound more likely to be aliens than Russians. Plus why wouldn't they be using these super cool drones that can't be tracked over military bases super easily to, y'know, win their big special military operation?
I don't think it's the Russians. Rogue defense contractors or legit aliens, those are my bets.

Not everything is aliens...

I'm not saying it's aliens.
I'm saying specifically attributing it to Russians is a poor cliff-notes version of exactly how odd all of this drone incursion stuff has been since at least 2017.

That doesn't clear anything up, and I promise no matter how hard you look, you won't find anything confirming that Russians were arrested for these drone incursions.
The hard sell here is that no one, at least publicly, has acknowledged being able to figure out where these drones take off/land from. If Russia has figured out how to smuggle small-car sized drones into foreign countries and then fly them over military bases unhindered.. it would make very little sense for them to only use those drones over places where they aren't doing any war stuff at the moment. Surveillance? Russia still has spy satellites, they can see top down views on military bases without the drones.
Drone=Russians is about as credible as Drones from a secret Iranian drone-carrier sub. Sure, someone in a position of authority believes it, but it's hardly a compelling explanation and leaves a bunch of gaps in explaining what is happening.

These weren’t car sized drones…that was in the US. This happened before those sightings and there was nothing to say they were linked.

Got a source on that ?

There was a more indepth report in the i news, as referenced in the above, but it’s paywalled.

While I appreciate the link. Nothing in there says it was confirmed Russian. Or even suspected Russian based on anything other than someone’s saying, I bet it’s the Russians.

From the paywalled article….
”UK and US officials have been investigating Kremlin involvement in the sightings at the air bases – where the US Air Force houses state-of-the art aircraft and defence technology. It shows why concerns are growing within Nato over how Vladimir Putin may be emboldened by Donald Trump’s aggressive stance towards Ukraine in peace negotiations. Senior MPs have now demanded the authorities examine the new evidence after a major investigation using open source information uncovered the suspect visits. One of the three individuals was just metres from the perimeter of RAF Mildenhall on a day when drones were flown over. The evidence is based on a database of open-source location data, provided to this newspaper by a former intelligence official who monitors hostile state cyber threat movements.”
“The investigation reveals: An individual, who over the last year has regularly been present in the Russian Embassy in Germany, flew into Britain in early May and was just metres from the perimeter of RAF Mildenhall during the November drone incursions; In May, another individual arrived in the UK who had also been present at Russia’s largest military facility in Tajikistan in February 2024. They visited remote areas surrounding RAF Mildenhall on several occasions before returning to the Russian military base within two months of the drone sightings; and A third person, known to have access to a facility belonging to Russia’s main intelligence agency (GRU) in Moscow during 2023, flew into London Stansted in August last year. They then visited areas around RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall throughout September and October before flying back to Russia, via Turkey, where they spent time in a military district on the outskirts of Moscow.”
“A senior former British military intelligence official who has reviewed the database seen by this newspaper said it suggested significant Russian “grey area activity”. This is a term for espionage operations launched when two countries are neither at peace or direct war. The intelligence official questioned what the UK was doing to monitor and protect sensitive defence sites. “On initial reflection this is not a surprise, this kind of activity has been prevalent in the UK and Europe for years,” they said. “The real question is where else this activity is occurring, which sensitive areas in HMG’s [Government] operations are under the same threat to external grey area activity.”
