This is the first one I've seen in the wild like this that made me feel ... Old.

Those things never worked
RidingUpFromBangor@reddit
They always worked for me… turn your new shelf system to am radio, nothing. Plug this into the am antenna input, boom - am radio
5uperman8atman@reddit
I've never seen one with the 3.5mm plug on it before. Usually it's two bare wires that connect with the receiver.
RidingUpFromBangor@reddit
Mine has two wires that go into a little plastic relay with one wire coming out, that one wire goes into the amp. A 3.5mm does not fit. If you zoom into the picture there’s a possibility of a splice, so I’m guessing there’s some kind of receiver out there that has a 3.5 antenna jack
GalaxyRedRanger@reddit
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Was this a thing or did someone wrap a different wire around there.
Hndlbrrrrr@reddit
On r/sonos someone was asking why the turntable they just hooked up to their speakers only sounded like chipmunks singing fast. I had to link an article to explaining the difference in record speeds and how to adjust the turntable accordingly. Hadn’t felt that old since blink 182 had Bad Religion opening for them.
Different_Nature8269@reddit
These antennas never worked as well as the metal extending ones.
Le_Sadie@reddit
Yeah they always ended up stuck behind the dresser
socialcommentary2000@reddit
Yep. Cant iterate on perfect.
jockfist5000@reddit
To be fair, why does anyone need an AM antenna anymore?
hokie47@reddit
COVID really was the last nail for radio. Funny how I don't even understand how the network affiliate TV model is still afloat. I am like no way this model can last another 10 years before it dies.
bokehtoast@reddit
Idk my city lost all power and cell service after Helene and for several days the radio was the only way to get information as many people were blocked by downed trees, landslides, etc.
hokie47@reddit
Unfortunately a rare event is not a good business model.
JFiveIsAlive@reddit
While it's not what it used to be, radio is still listened to by almost 90% of the US population on a weekly basis. AM may be dying but FM is doing OK.
hokie47@reddit
Hmm somewhat, but podcast have better ad targeting. It's time and frequency.
Mr_SunnyBones@reddit
In my part of Europe I'm not sure if theres been any actual stations on AM since the 90s .
I know its one of those weird older things that people still use in the US that have died out elsewhere , like Cheques/checks
Runningman787@reddit
To listen to baseball games because I'm blacked out of every other way to experience them.
Bubbly_Positive_339@reddit
Tradio
JFiveIsAlive@reddit
To listen to right wing talk radio and sports, of course.
angrybirdseller@reddit
Rush Oxyballs no longer around to spew trash!
Throwaway_inSC_79@reddit
Clay and Buck took his place in some markets, and Dan Bongino in others. But he’s got an appointed position now, right? So idk nor care if he still has a show.
11229988B@reddit
A buddy was listening to sports and npr, he didn't have a tv or Smart phone so i joked he was listening to sex talk radio
jockfist5000@reddit
Sports… fine. Political talk radio? Just get a podcast hahaha at least you can skip the commercials.
Frunklin@reddit
Coast to Coast AM of course.
Throwaway_inSC_79@reddit
Did you order your super beets?
Warring_Angel@reddit
Came with my Aiwa shelf system.
be_more_gooder@reddit
Guaranteed I have one of those in my A/V box in my garage with a half dozen RCA cables and speaker wire
ZealousidealDog4802@reddit
I still have wired speakers set up in my garage. I have two stereos as well (I did have 3 but I managed to part ways with one), two CD walkmans, about 50 ft of coax cable, a whole box of rca/HDMI/rgb cables, a laptop from '00 that weighs about 80 lbs, fuses, transistors, capasitors, and a bunch of other electronics crap. It's like a mini radio shack, someday I may think about getting rid of it... or I'm like a low key preper. 🤷
Dramatic_Stain@reddit
Never. 1981 mitsubishi sterio set up in the garage with inside and out side speakers with a tiny Bluetooth receiver set into the aux port. Still sounds amazing when cranked!
disdain7@reddit
I never got a BT receiver, but I do keep an old iPhone 6 plugged into my aux port in my 80s RCA receiver. I’m a physical media guy but you gotta cover all the bases.
disdain7@reddit
Look as a 40 year old with an unhealthy obsession with stereo equipment, cables, and shoeboxes of adapters I promise you’re just one project away from needing ALL of it lol.
cruesoe@reddit
I just showed this post to my wife and said the same thing then scrolled some more and saw your post, definitely getting old!
stavago@reddit
I know. I saw this and audibly booed
shadowlarx@reddit
I remember when this was considered fancy. Our TV antenna was a coat hanger liberally covered in aluminum foil.
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
It's not even something that's been relegated! It's still current today.
automaticmantis@reddit
Right? I bought a receiver a few months ago that came with one
GM_Nate@reddit
i remember having one of these on top of my cd stereo...back in the 90's
jellybeansRover8ted@reddit
AM loop antenna
