Why did Jean Luc stop holding group meetings in his home office?

LawnJerk@reddit
I bet this was sometimes driven by what sets were available based on what was in use for other scenes.
Enchelion@reddit
I'm pretty sure the conference room set wasn't even built until Season 3.
LawnJerk@reddit
The observation deck was the conference room in season one. For this type of meeting, Picard sitting at a desk with a couple of officers standing, the ready room would make sense.
OarsandRowlocks@reddit
Roddenberry forbade it?

Morning standups. Ugh
unbalancedcheckbook@reddit
Yep. Coffee hasn't kicked in yet and you need to explain how you're going to get the triticaline to the Tlaxians and make sure it's tested but your day is full of meetings and you're not going to get it done anyway.
Winter_cat_999392@reddit
One of the writers of Lower Decks served, for sure. When Mariner gets promoted, is assigned audits, and is then told to audit the audits.
YT-Deliveries@reddit
I feel seen.
pacard@reddit
Do you have any blockers?
bmyst70@reddit
We don't have the Borg invasion scheduled until next sprint.
Greyhaven7@reddit
What’s the status on ______?
technicolorsorcery@reddit
Ohp, you're muted.
PrestegiousWolf@reddit
As the scrum master you need to keep your stories updated please.
pacard@reddit
IT'S NOT A STATUS MEETING! I just want to know if I can unblock you I promise <3
eagle_flower@reddit
Currently blocked by the prime directive but working with a badmiral to get around it

Picard: "Nothing to report on my end."
UnintelligibleMaker@reddit
After having had a person on my team who was confined to a wheelchair: people really should call it Daily Scrum Meeting or something better. I get the idea of standup but it was awkward when our manager kept calling it that. Its like the dude just had his foot amputated read the room and change the meeting name.
Enchelion@reddit
We just say daily meeting since we're all on Zoom anyways.
DoesAnyoneCare2999@reddit
Ours has been called "Standup (standing optional)" since the pandemic (when calling in, people obviously weren't standing).
As the person in my team who can't stand for long periods of time, I honestly don't really care what it's called.
No_Detective_But_304@reddit
Greyhaven7@reddit
Yeah. This happens a lot. Change happens though.
grooming => refinement
master => main
Etc.
We’ll get there.
pacard@reddit
I groom my backlog so I can enslave my branches
UnintelligibleMaker@reddit
I know but its why i call it out. So we get there. :)
gafftapes20@reddit
We just call it the daily huddle.

Not the utopia I was hoping for. They still have a long way to go.

Greyhaven7@reddit
That’s it for me.

Could I have just skipped standup and gotten more work done? Yes

Once they knew where his quarters were, did you SEE how hard the man had to work to get some solid flute time in?
Brocephus_@reddit
Because it stinks like sex in there
Republiconline@reddit
primalmaximus@reddit
I still can't believe they managed to convince Patrick Stewart to play Avery Bullock.
Nor can I believe there was only one time where he told the writers "No, I absolutely will not say that."
Republiconline@reddit
He STILL does the voice work. Sir Patrick MUST love doing it. Like really. Sure he “whatever” in Picard. Season 3 is TNG Season 8 (fight me).
primalmaximus@reddit
Oh yeah, based on interviews he absolutely loves playing Avery Bullock.

Riker maneuvers everywhere.
Voidstarmaster@reddit
Because the writers and Rick Berman decided it would be better to use his ready room for small/ informal meetings or the observation lounge for bigger/ formal meetings. Picard needed his own space and it isn't reasonable that a captain of a command like the Enterprise D wouldn't have multiple rooms for himself. In real life, admirals' state rooms and dining facilities on fleet carriers are quite extensive considering that men are hot bunking in berths below.
Groundbreaking-Pea92@reddit

limited camera angles.
Dim-Mak-88@reddit
No "windows", carpeted surfaces everywhere, and that terrible lighting (look at the shadow behind Picard). The set sucked, whereas the conference room behind the bridge had the cool star trails out the windows when they discussed matters.
Tokens_Only@reddit
I mean, Picard is facing the windows. This is the main area of his quarters.

“Jean-Luc, we really need you to be in the Ready Room.”
“Why? I can do the same thing here, and there aren’t as many people bothering me.”
“Well, we need you near the bridge.”
“Why do I need to be there? They can call me if there’s an emergency.”
“Right, but the Ready Room is closer to the bridge.”
“But…we have transporters. I could just be beamed from my chair here to my chair on the bridge.”
dphoenix1@reddit
Of course he has to go back to the bridge, otherwise he’ll just sit around and play his damn flute all day
German_Granpa@reddit
If it's possible to command a ship from your quarters, why have a bridge ? - If -
sqplanetarium@reddit
And the transporter, comms, and turbolifts will malfunction as the plot demands.
BEETLEJUICEME@reddit
This, but like for real
TwilightReader100@reddit
I've watched TNG at least twice and apparently... pay so little attention... that I never realized this specific set stopped being used. 😬 😳 I've crawled under my armchair and gone to live with the spiders in shame, don't worry.
Annual_Use_3431@reddit
Oh, I'm sure it was 100% a pain to shoot a scene in there, much less finding a new approach or angle to keep it fresh episode to episode. The conference room must have been a huge relief when it was built.
fredprof9999@reddit
It definitely didn't stop being used completely. I remember scene from season 7's "The Pegasus" on that set:

TwilightReader100@reddit
It must be that I conflated this room with his ready room, which I know is one of the doors off the bridge and then never looked around this room enough to see that there's another room to Picard's left when he's at the desk or how far it actually goes to his right. Too busy listening to Picard chewing Will out in this case, I guess. I knew they showed his quarters sometimes because I'm pretty sure that Beverly comes to him for their breakfasts, for instance. I just didn't realize he had space for an office in there, too.

Spocks_Goatee@reddit
Is there a list of episodes this appeared in? I don't recall ever seeing it.
Enchelion@reddit
It's just Picard's quarters, which show up through the seasons. They did some updates and changed how it was shot in later seasons once they had the actual conference room set.
Ok-Yogurtcloset-179@reddit
I… don’t remember this room at all! And is was used all the way up to season 6?!
Network57@reddit
I remember him saying "sophistry" in that office
GrizzlyPeak72@reddit
No one used coasters and worf kept breaking wind, as is the Klingon custom
BusRunnethOver@reddit
Didn't Jean Luc sort of come out of his shell as the show went on too? Maybe a story reason is that the captain got to know his crew and didn't need to have meetings on his "home turf" as often.
Wickedsmack@reddit
Perhaps because his ready room is closer to the bridge?
PrestegiousWolf@reddit

Have you seen his ready room?
That little alcove he orders tea from also has a toilet. He took a wicked shit and wouldn’t be able to hold a meeting in there for about 35 to 45 minutes.
Key_Stuff1625@reddit
Yeah, keep calling him Jean Luc. He really likes that.
huhwhatnogoaway@reddit
Why? Because a man needs some time and space that’s mostly his alone. You have people over once, preferably, in a while: if one must, I suppose. For the sake of appearances then they can get right the heck on out of the fortress of solitude!
Go away until one of you is burned, beaten, or bleeding then, alright, come and get me.
His ready room is the get-me-the-heck-away-from-these-people-I-can’t-even-right-now room.
The conference room is oh-god-something-happened-so-FINE-now-we-gotta-interact,-I-guess room.
jtrades69@reddit
