Why you do?
mobyhead1@reddit
Because our electors went to college.
incompleteremix@reddit
Who is electoral college?
mobyhead1@reddit
Bear is electoral college!
blackhorse15A@reddit
This is the correct answer. Because when Americans vote in November of a Presidential election year- that is who you are actually voting for. The electors are who gets elected in November. And no one really seems to know who they are.

Why is a good question. We don’t have much in the way of notes for their reasoning, and I think it wasn’t even devised in the original constitutional convention. I think it was created in a later supplemental meeting.

The purpose of the electoral college was put in place to create a balance between high-population states and low-population states during presidential elections. That's the simple answer, if you want a more in depth answer as to how it functions I'll have to refer you elsewhere.
Likewise each state of the union has two senators to serve in the upper house of our legislature. (The lower house has a number of representatives that correspond to the state's population.)
It was a concern of the founding fathers of the nation that urbanized, heavily populated states would have an unreasonable degree of power over rural, less populated states. See, in theory the USA is simply a union of quasi-independent states that are all considered equal to one another. California and Wyoming are equal peers, just as New York and Mississippi are equal on the national stage. Despite stark differences in population and economic activity, they all stand on equal footing when it comes to governing the union as a whole.
It is not a perfect system, but it's the best that could be agreed upon when the Constitution was written. (And for better or for worse, works fairly well most of the time.)

Because we are awesome.
Its because a power sharing agreement had to be struck between high population states and low population states in order to convince 13 colonies to join together and fight the British Empire.
low population colonies didn't want to join to effectively have zero say in who was president, and little to no power to craft laws or approve/deny international treaties.
and the bigger population colonies wanted more say. so they came up with the house having reps based on population, the senate always having 2 per state, and the president being elected by each state getting a vote per senator and a vote per house rep.

The Electoral College is actually the University of Electorates. Really old university in Washington, DC, founded in 1788.
Better question is why don't YOU have this?
ARatOnATrain@reddit
Your electors only have a general education?
Bastiat_sea@reddit
The US is founded on two principles. That we are a union of equal states, and a republic of equal citizens.
This is why we have two legislative bodies, one based on population, and the other with equal representation for each state. This isn't possible for the presidency, since it's just one person, so instead we vote for the president through the electoral college, which combines the two.

We call all institutions of higher learning “college.” Yes, some are Electoral Universities, but we usually just say “college” in casual speech.

It's a Freedom Feature, your country doesn't have enough freedom to cope with it.

Everyone always asks “Why is Electoral College?” but no one ever asks “How is Electoral College?”
