As an independent voter, I'm not at all impressed.
Do something of substance if you want my vote
Atlas7-k@reddit
Like what?
He is doing one of the few things that our system of laws and rules of government to allow him to do. The whole point of Trump using executive orders and Musk/DOGE is to by pass the legislator and therefore the very methods that the GOP have relied on for the last 30 years. As such any effective opposition must come via the courts.
Public speeches rarely get coverage unless, like this one, they are done in extraordinary manner. AOC and Sanders are holding rallies to keep people energized, they are blanketing the political shows with talking points, they are holding town hall meetings and empty chair meetings nationwide. The Dems in the House are starting to vote as a block and in both chambers they are submitting legislation to counter Trump’s orders and to clarify his actions as illegal, immoral, and unconstitutional. Meanwhile, the DNC is fattening the war-chest for 2026 and 2028 (sorry but money wins elections,) while also helping to fund the lawsuits.
Many of these things are in fact substantive and those things which may be referred to as performative are part of a PR campaign, which is a necessity in this country.
So again, what do you want them to do?
hankbobbypeggy@reddit
Lol, my friend, I completely understand not being in love with the options, but if you're still undecided as to which party has a better plan/intentions for this country I'm not sure what in this world could possibly sway you.
Curmudgy@reddit
Impressive, but who knows what it will accomplish.
ItsTheExtreme@reddit
That’s my question. What’s it for? What is he hoping to accomplish?
normaltraveldude@reddit
Political grandstanding and therefore financing his campaign
KimBrrr1975@reddit
Trying to find a way to say "We hear you, we are listening, we just lack power to do much." Lots of complaints by dems that their elected officials aren't listening because they aren't doing something in a public-facing manner. This is a response to those complaints, in part.
Pyewhacket@reddit
I hear what you are saying but feels like much a do about nothing?!

He is hoping to put himself up as a presidential contender.
mezolithico@reddit
It shows that at least 1 democrat in the senate has a spine. Maybe it will inspire other to do the same
Adept_Thanks_6993@reddit
Stifling the ability of Senate Republicans to pass legislation. Even delays are good.
Grunt08@reddit
No he wasn't. He wasn't filibustering. He was doing a protest speech while nothing else was happening. He neither stifled nor disrupted anything.
joepierson123@reddit
Voter turnout tomorrow maybe
Meattyloaf@reddit
Probably to cause some delay and to get fellow democrats to stop bending the knee, maybe garner some support from the non-maga Republicans. Maybe he's just wanting to call out all the bullshit.

theblisters@reddit
Super proud of my senator
Colseldra@reddit
Didn't he help vote in favor of corporate drug companies against the public interest multiple times because they donate to him
theblisters@reddit
It's weird when the largest employers in the state are pharma and healthcare insurance
Colseldra@reddit
Kinda seems like another corporate shill though
theblisters@reddit
Who's your senators in North Carolina?
Colseldra@reddit
Way worse than booker is
c3534l@reddit
Don't care.
Sad_Analyst_5209@reddit
He had his reasons, it was allowed, so good for him.
WhatAreYouSaying05@reddit
It’s commendable, but until dems get inspired it won’t mean much
Relevant_Elevator190@reddit
Yawn.
Snarky_McSnarkleton@reddit
It's a noble gesture. But ultimately, Trump is king. That's the new reality, and we have to survive.
Ana_Na_Moose@reddit
Did he do this just for the lols? Why did he do this?
On the simple fact that he broke the record I am very passionately indifferent about
Quietlovingman@reddit
I am of two minds about this. Happy for the new record as Thurmond's speech was not one to be proud of. That said, I am of the opinion that the Filibuster should be removed from the rules of the Senate and that no senator should be allowed to speak as long as they like in an effort to derail the processes of law. I am of this opinion, despite approving of his use for it in this place and time. It is a painful relic of procedure that should be gone, no matter who is in power.
PowerfulIndustry4811@reddit
He's actually not even filibustering anything this time. There were no votes or anything that needed to take place. He's just talking to prevent other discussion from happening
mvislandgirl@reddit
I burst into tears. For the first time in a long time I felt proud to be an American.
Animalstickers@reddit
I was in my car on the way home, yelling “Hell fuckin yes bitch!!!” When he said the American people have the power and when he broke the record
BarnacleFun1814@reddit
Cory Booker is a toolbag and I’d be embarrassed to have him represent me
hatred-shapped@reddit
Mehh. A grand worthless gesture is grand, but worthless
OsvuldMandius@reddit
Strom is a cooler name than Corey. Like, a dude named Strom caught the Germans at Pearl Harbor or something. Corey is some soft batch teen actor from a family friendly 90s sitcom.
Beyond that, no opinion.
wetcornbread@reddit
Stupid. The Democratic Party is at its all time low in favor ability. All performative because nobody is going to watch a speech that long rambling about Donald Trump.
ThatJudge1751@reddit
Waste of time and money. Sick accomplishment, now Elon eliminate this waste. 🤣
Meattyloaf@reddit
Want to eliminate waste let's eliminate Elon's contracts.
Eff-Bee-Exx@reddit
He’s a threat to our Bureaucracy!
Konigwork@reddit
Eliminate the ev tax credit maybe, but I’m pretty sure “have a way outside of total reliance on Russia to get to space” isn’t necessarily waste.
I shudder to think about what would have happened in 2022 without SpaceX’s capabilities. Starlink first of all directly helped Ukraine (even if it was a walled garden where Ukraine wasn’t allowed to use it to guide missiles into Russian territory). Falcon and Dragon allowed NASA and ESA to be on equal footing with Roscosmos, removing a significant point of leverage since up until 2 years prior, the only way to the ISS was Soyuz.
ashleyorelse@reddit
Elon is some of the waste we need to emiminate
ApprehensivePie1195@reddit
Waste of time. The first record speech was for civil rights. Something that was important. I don't know what this was for honestly.
cheesyshop@reddit
Maybe other Democrats will see the support for this and stand ip to Trump as well.
wjbc@reddit
Not only did Cory Booker talk for 24+ hours, but he spoke lucidly and passionately throughout. He wasn’t reading Dr. Seuss or the phone book.
OhThrowed@reddit
I'd be more for it if he'd done it before voting and it actually meant something.
curlyhead2320@reddit
Seriously. I’m so confused why he’s doing this now.
Konigwork@reddit
Because he’s running for president in 2028
curlyhead2320@reddit
Nobody is going to remember this at that point
Avery_Thorn@reddit
I had not considered that aspect, but given Storm Thurmond’s racist proclivities, that makes it all the much sweeter, given the Honorable Senator Booker’s demographics.
External-Prize-7492@reddit
He killed it. As a political scientist who just retired from working in DC after 28 years, he and his staff did a good job.
TheRealDudeMitch@reddit
A black man breaking Strom Thurmond’s record is legendary. I’m all about it.
junkeee999@reddit
He did it very well. He did…something. I don’t know if it will lead to anything but he did something. And he did it the right way. Passionately and with a spirit of unity, not hate.
RetroactiveRecursion@reddit
I don't to diminish the accomplishment because it's pretty damn impressive. But you what end? If this is what it takes to motivate even a fraction of a fraction of a percent of people, barely a drop in the bucket -- to get out and fight -- or just vote -- for democracy, we're screwed.
People are tires of feel-good demonstrations of stamina, skill, or intellect. They want tangible solutions to problems, even if it's bad for the politicians' careers.
-MerlinMonroe-@reddit
I’m a Democrat, but I honestly don’t care. Only thing he accomplished is setting a new record.
jluvdc26@reddit
He was awesome and inspiring! I can't imagine it has any real tangible impact on stopping any of the nonsense, but the Democrats literally have no real power at the moment and its important to still try to do something.
o93mink@reddit
Good for him. I hope he gets to pee soon.
Moose_Medium1847@reddit
Hes been taking short breaks, likely for that reason.
MrdrOfCrws@reddit
No this article specifically points out that Thurmond was allowed a bathroom break 3 hours into his speech, which was not something Booker was able to do.
The only 'break' he got was when he yielded to questions, allowing him to stop talking for that small amount of time.
JesusStarbox@reddit
Depends aren't just for Trump.
Studious_Noodle@reddit
“More Americans need to stand up and say enough is enough."
--Cory Booker
ItsVoxBoi@reddit
Pretty cool. It's a start for the Democrats
Infamous_Towel_5251@reddit
It's....completely meaningless and nothing more than an attention seeking stunt.
Grunt08@reddit
It means - and I can't emphasize this enough - literally nothing. This was the distillation of pointless performative politics.
It was masturbatory performance art in the service of nothing; no matter where you fall on the political spectrum, you should understand that this did nothing to advance or hinder your preferred policies. His opponents were either baffled or laughing at him, his allies were either baffled or cheering him on for no obvious reason.
We're reaching a level of catastrophic stupidity in our politics and I am begging someone in elected office to stop acting like a fucking idiot for five minutes.
ashleyorelse@reddit
At least he's doing something. So many people are not.
Having said that, I'd like him and others to do more.
