How to sail in Europe for a long weekend layover
Posted by fofof@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 11 comments
I have an upcoming work trip that will give me a long weekend (April 19-21) in Europe by myself with nothing to do. I would love to find a way to go sailing somehow. Travel isn't a huge problem as long as it isn't too far out of the way.
All the classes and cabin charters that I've found are suited for a week or more.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Rent a small sailing boat in Friesland.

Prices are always indicated for a week, but you can do shorter rents. You'll get some sort of discount, but not pro rate.
19-21 April is already "maybe" in the mediterannean. Anything in north Europe (North Sea, Channel) is going to bittery miserable without the proper gear. Even of you get lucky with the weather, the sea water will still be bitterly cold.

If you're in the Netherlands you can probably rent a small open boat, something like a valk, for a day or two. If you want to stay close. No classes involved though and you'll need to find a place for the night as well. Also, many marinas are often hard to reach by public transport. There might be some options near Amsterdam, at the Loosdrechtse Plassen, or Vinkeveense plassen

Assuming you know what you're doing on a sailboard you may be able to rent something for a day. In the Netherlands for example, check ottenhome in Loosdrecht, rent something in Friesland or the randmeren. I live near Almere, we often rent a fox 22 or an aira 22 at derandmeren.nl. You'll need to rent a car to get there though.
Do note it can be cold half of April. Nothing wildly cold, but it would be advisable to bring a warm set of sailing overalls, sweater and coat. Boots advisable too.
Here's a different idea: hollandsail.nl. They sail from Harlingen or Enkhuizen, often to Terschelling and back for the weekend on old ships. You won't be.sailing.yourself but it is great fun to be aboard. Harlingen is okay by train, you don't need a car. Don't know about Enkhuizen. Just give 'm a call.

3 days is probably too short to charter a boat, plus you are by yourself. you can look up travel agencies that sell sailing day trips or short trips like 2 days or so. Usually these tour package come pick you up too. Things like viatour airbnb experience sort of thing.

The country would indeed be helpful. Europe is…big. Sailing in the Mediterranean? Baltic? North Sea? Lake Geneva?
You see, the seemingly US-American sentiment of considering Europe this one little place has people raising their eyebrows.

Europe where? Norway? Italy? Spain? Huge difference.

Europe is a big place… maybe narrow down where you are looking?
