Does having a blog increase your chance of landing a job, or increase opportunity?

I’ve always seen beginners being given the advice to write articles, hence the flood of badly written technical articles all over Medium and Dev.to. However, I saw that the senior engineer in my team with over 15 years of experience has a technical blog, where he also has his side projects and his CV on display. This got me thinking, is there actually a ROI with having a blog as an experienced dev? Do recruiters reach out? Curious to hear any thoughts on this.

I have written a lot of blogs in the past 2 years, and not even the interviewer has seen it once. So, just doing it for fun now. 🤓

Well I’ve been laid off since December 2023 now. Unfortunately I live in Scotland, where every city is small. So the job market being trash is really felt here.

Well, the market is trash, you are right about that.
How much experience? What kind of developer are you, frontend or backend?

6-7 YOE
Title wise, I was always a backend developer using the typical Java and spring boot stacks in FinTech. I’ve worked at a massive company, a scale up, then an early stage start up as one of the first engineers. The early stage start up did the usual, over-hire for speed and then layoff everyone else under made up reasons once certain goals had been met. The latter two involved working with JP Morgan and CitiBank as clients. I then gave a shot at my own SaaS, but two competitors raised millions in funding and I can’t compete with that lol, nor am I interested in raising money.
Skill wise, I’m full stack using React on the FE. I’m self taught and was more FE focused when my career started. I kept up to date by learning things like Next, Vite, TanStack Router, TS Query, Radix UI, React Aria, React Hook Form, and a bunch of the other usual stuff for a web based app built using JS/TS ecosystem.

I have been blogging for about somewhat more than a year now. Recruiters never reached out to me because of it. I do it solely because I really like it.
The return of investment for me is that:

You mentioned "recruiters don't reach out", why is that ?
