Most cared, but what can we do? Protesting with signs hasn't achieved anything and it is illegal to even talk about the type of activism that has any hope of making a difference.

The article argues that the U.S. will reach a "point of no return" on April 20, 2025, when Trump is expected to invoke the Insurrection Act, leading to authoritarian rule. It describes a step-by-step collapse of democratic institutions, including mass arrests, censorship, and indefinite postponement of elections. The author presents this as a planned coup, following historical patterns, and urges readers to expose and resist it before it's too late.
I guarantee you that the author's idea of what "resisting it" isn't even close to what actually needs to happen
I think of the episode of Superstore when the liberal NPR-tote bag guy catches a store burglar in the act and says "I caught you, that means you have to stop" and the burglar replies "uh, no I don't".
There are lots of us protesting. There are mass protests April 5th, including DC. There are plenty of people doing more than just nothing. I hope everyone else joins the upcoming protests that can. Look up the 50501 movement for more information.
I'm sure that Trump will see the protest and then say sorry and everything will be all better.. Protests are better than nothing but they are also a tool in controlled opposition so the effect will be pretty limited and if it starts gaining an actual foothold the police will crush it. The civil rights took more than protesting.
I have to say, I myself have fallen victim to showing up to a protest, having chats with people near me, and leaving. At the very LEAST, I would like to see much more emphasis on the organizing and community building aspect of protests. Orgs need to make themselves seen and vocal about the work they do, how you can educate yourself further, and how you can join them. Protests should be as much a ‘networking’ tool as they are a demonstration of our numbers and collective voice.
Protests are a START. I’m aware the civil rights took more than protesting - but they were a key part. Even the ACLU is joining April 5th protest which is a huge deal. But I guess if you wanna sit on your ass and let these f@scists consolidate power then move out the way for people who are at least trying
But to think that this will end peacefully is unrealistic. This will probably end up bloody, but people fought so we can have freedom, it’s probably time for us to start doing the same. To sit here and tell me that protests won’t work is beyond me - the numbers have gone up weekly at my local protests just because it does mobilize people. All it takes is a few people to start getting mass waves of protests going.
Very funny thread if you read through the comments in which today's Reddit liberals have to come to terms with the fact that communists were the only meaningful resistance to fascism in Portugal, and that their precious NATO had no issues with Portugal being a member state under Salazar
I find myself disconnecting from self-identified liberals more and more. They have (perhaps) higher IQs and education, but they refuse to consider the idea that the orange person might be smarter. They have absolutely no clue of just how much free advertising they, themselves, give him and his monkeys every damn day in light of MAGA's delight in owning the libs.
Bro Lenin's brother died in 1887 (He was offered amnesty and could have lived.) The Russian Revolution did not happen until March of 1917 and a small little thing known as The Great War helped push it along. Do people really think Americans are going to spontaneously organize into a movement strong enough to counter the Fed? My study of history leaves me pessimistic.
Exactly. Most people, even politically-conscious activist type people, vastly underestimate just how much abject misery the general population is quite content to endure indefinitely. Things have to get so, so, so much worse before people even consider "rising up". And by the time things get that bad for that many, it's already way too late.
There are nationwide protests this weekend. While I am pessimistic that it will make any difference, not participating, if able is the same as not voting. You are agreeing to accept the boot on your neck. It is well past time for America to step up or STFU.
Just from another perspective - undercovers will probably film and use facial recognition on anyone protesting. While it sounds like the right thing to do, as soon as the mass incarcerations begin, we just gave ourselves up for nothing. I am staying dormant, waiting for the second wave of protests / the insurrection part.
I get what you're saying. But if they're genuine about showing up if things move beyond peaceful protest, then they aren't "special." They're willing to accept a different role the peaceful protesters likely aren't. Diversity of tactics.
This isn't about waiting for other to suffer... fascists need resistance to fortify their power. They will use the protests to light a few buildings on fire and then declare martial law.
This is a game of chess, and you have to predict their moves, not just react to their baits. They want you in the streets. They need it to get more approval from their own base. Don't give them what they want and need.
They are going to invoke martial law or use the Insurrection Act one way or another. It hardly matters if there’s an actual threat—look at all the other bullshit they rationalize (eg. we need to crash the economy to save the economy; we have to have Greenland)
Rubbish. If Trump feels he needs buildings on fire to declare martial law, he'll light buildings on fire. If he needs a resistance to demonise and there isn't one, he'll invent one.
" need resistance to fortify their power " what a load of nonsense. More like just criminalize campus protestors and call them terrorist supporters.
Trump has fortified his power just fine in America. It turns out the Americans are just as combative as the Russian liberals. No wonder they took the country so easily when this is the prevailing mentality.
Internationally, the USA is starting a military buildup near Iran as the deadline for their submission is coming up in a few weeks. Starting a war with them and using the anti-war protest it causes may be their excuse to further crackdowns on dissent.
The kinds of protests that NPR liberals do have no political value, they are basically open-air group therapy. If Democrats didn't spend every year since FDR joining Republicans to crush unions, there might actually be a union infrastructure in place to do strikes in key industries
these protests are exactly what he's been waiting for. there will be far right agitators trying to start violence, and if people let them, it will be enough for Trump to declare martial law. then the civil war begins.
Can someone explain or point me to why April 20 is significant for this to happen? Couldn't it happen before or after this date? Seems more like the pieces in play need to be aligned more than just a date.
Per the article, this is the day that "Donald Trump’s advisory committee is expected to release its findings on whether he should invoke the Insurrection Act". Also it's Hitler's birthday.
Information quality must be kept high. More detailed information regarding our approaches to specific claims can be found on the Misinformation & False Claims page.
Sorry but this idea that people having access to semi - auto / full auto or anything handheld is absolutely hilarious. The US government has access to the worlds largest selection of military and infantry weapons behind what can be bought privately. The very notion that an armed resistance could exist in the event of a coup is insane - spectre can drop you from miles overhead and at best you’ll hear the munitions.
Myanmar has been doing pretty good work against the junta for the past few years. And all they started out with were 3d printed guns and rusty hunting rifles.
Sure, the fascists might drone strike you. But the operators are just as squishy as you or I. those munitions are manufactured somewhere, by someone. Theyre transported on fragile infrastructure.
For the fascists to win they require that the general population thinks that resistance is worthless and impossible.
What happened in Spain and Portugal during their DECADES of fascism is far more likely in the USA than any fantasies of an American Mao leading a protracted people's war
Believe it or not, shooting at drones and tanks with a gun is not the fascist cure you make it out to be like you just watched red dawn for the first time.
There are plenty of things people are actively doing, and you can too, where you are not obliterated immediately and used as a government excuse for more force.
Corpses in the ground dont fight fascism. Be smarter about what you say online and aim to do.
Not to mention those with the most weapons are never going to be random people living in a city with a handgun in their apartment, it will be the crazy militia freaks out in the woods and farm towns just itching to get a shot.
We've been bad at putting down guerilla insurgencies in other countries, but it's a different ball game on home turn. A homegrown insurgency isn't dealing with just the military, it's dealing with the entirety of the police/surveillance state coming down on it. Every militarized county sheriff, every asshole state trooper, every SWAT officer, and every FBI/ATF/DEA/ICE/ agent will also be at work tamping down an insurgency ready to throw people into the largest penal system in the world.
I’m armed like you wouldn’t believe and I don’t think firearms convey any special power to me to resist. They’re just a hobby. To think otherwise seems delusional.
82 million plus firearm owners, nearly 400 million firearms and no collective ability to stop constitutional over reach/ outright nullification the constitution.
Leftists includes a lot of people. They'll probably be some manifestos released after some actions.
But the way you're talking, I suspect you mean liberals/Democrats. And they're not going to do shit because that's exactly what they do every time fascism comes. It's they that hold the gates open, not leftists.
It's usually the leftists that get murdered first. Might be easier for them this time, though, since the USSR (RIP Spain and Ukraine) isn't going to join in and kill them.
Also worth noting that the time of the American Revolution, the opposition's weaponry was basically the same as those 3%. Now it's a pea shooter AR-15 against a drone with a Hellfire missile. Also takes, if going by Vietnam numbers, about 50,000 rounds per enemy kill. I'm sure there are some really prepper nutters with more than that nut most gun owners I know only have a few hundred or a thousand rounds.
While that may be true, your assumption relies on 100% retention of US government soldiers. Even if that were the case you would also have to assume that all logistics needed for said drones and hellfire missiles is still in place. Then on top of that you need to cover the entirety of the USA, which is approx 3,750,000 sq miles. Even at 100% retention, 100% logistics, and ATTEMPTING to cover the entire USA, they would still be outnumbered 3-1 if even only 2.5% of the population decided to dance with a reliable and effective rifle.
I'm in a defense adjacent industry and I've seriously been struggling with the idea that I might need to find a new job so I'm not complicit in the awful shit coming from this admin. My problem is that it's an obscenely well paid role for my area and as the sole earner for a my wife and kid, I can't afford to fail them. Shit sucks man
Workers in Arkansas have no problem cranking out thousands of one tonne bombs to level the cities of their enemies, even when they have no navy, no air force, no mobile infantry or even any industry.
Every soul in the armed forces and defense industry is allied with the interests of capital, and thinks nothing of killing mass numbers of inconvenient people. It would be foolish to rely on their better nature.
The Simple Sabotage Field Manual (you can google it) identified several specific techniques for different types of targets. The following is a selection of tactics identified in the manual specifically for managers and supervisors.
Demand it in writing
Ask endless questions and use long messages
Make objections when possible
Do everything possible to create delays
Don’t provide the team with new tools and resources
Demand the most expensive tools and resources and complain if you don’t get them
Complete unimportant tasks first and give the essential functions to the least skilled team member
Insist on perfection and accept defective work
Give incomplete or misleading instructions when training new employees
Reward poor performance
Go to conferences and meetings to avoid getting the work done
Create duplicate files
Create policies and procedures for everything
You get the idea. If you’re not a manager, you’ll need slightly different tactics, but check out the manual for more ideas:
I'm in a defense adjacent industry and I've seriously been struggling with the idea that I might need to find a new job so I'm not complicit in the awful shit coming from this admin. My problem is that it's an obscenely well paid role for my area and as the sole earner for a my wife and kid, I can't afford to fail them. Shit sucks man
Yeah. I mean all of the last admins had their issues to be sure. But none had the track record of actively working against the best interests of the country and it's citizens.
When i started this job i made it very clear that i wanted no part in making anything that goes boom and that hasnt changed. Up until the last 2 months, I never had any serious concerns that something I designed would be used against people in this country. Now, with everything going on im not so sure.
But none had the track record of actively working against the best interests of the country and it's citizens.
Not sure I agree that doing endless war and imperialism for decades, whilst ignoring the needs of the citizens, whilst increasing costs of living year over year, whilst keeping wages stagnant, whilst spending more ever year on "defense", whilst bailing outindustries and banks and raising taxes, is working in the best interests of your country and its citizens.
How is America's Healthcare going? How is America's infrastructure going? How are America's various social programs going? How is America's housing situation going? Homelessness? Child hunger? Poverty? Education? How are they going?
Idk How long you've been doing your job, but it hasn't been looking good for a long time.
The American revolution was not "against tyranny" lol, it was a bourgeois revolt against monarchy. And it wouldn't have succeeded without significant material and military support from France. Who is your outside power that will help a theoretical second revolution? Because liberals believe in American imperialism as much as Republicans, and they also hate all of the "official bad guys" like China, Russia, Iran, etc
This is exactly the gotcha I think it is, and the passivity of US folks in the current situation continues to amaze me.
You're about the only people on this planet, arguably with the North Koreans, to think "nah we can revolt they'll just beat us. Best not to revolt and give them time to beat us all the same".
You seem to work under the wild assumption Trump will launch a nuke on Washington if you organize a national march. Well he won't. However if you continue to give him time to purge the army, which he already started, you're going to discover how and why Germany got its bizarre reputation. This is how. Comfortable people like you saying "hah, protest right now? What a silly idea"
There'll never be a perfect time to resist. And the second most perfect time is now.
Free elections, a free press, and the right to protest will disappear one piece at a time, until there’s nothing left to save.
Those have been long gone for many generations and some never meaningfully existed. Just facades that placate the masses but ensure the monied interests control things.
Bring on the accelerated downfall of the US and a new multi-polar world.
Der Orangenfuhrer's ex-wife said he kept a book of Hitler's speeches on his nightstand. He doesn't care if it's good or bad; he just wants to be as significant in history as Hitler is.
You think that idiot actually reads? He can barely even speak coherently, dude’s a puppet same as every “president” has been and he’ll follow his master’s orders same as the rest. They’re gearing up for war within the populace. They started with the predictive programming last year to ready the populace with the “civil war” movie from good ol obama’s higher ground productions. I believe this is the year where things will finally get kinetic in the american heartland

I was looking for it too, nobody has mentioned it and this is the only sub I’ve seen making this claim. If I was to guess perhaps it’s in project 2025 but I’m not reading the article until I see it posted somewhere else.
The claim is that on January 20th, Trump signed an executive order giving 90 days to determine if the immigration issue was considered as an invasion... At the 90 day mark if his cabinet determines that it is indeed an invasion trump would invoke war time powers so that he could use the military inside the USA to deal with the threat.
The fear is, this is what he wants, and his cabinet is most definitely going to say it is an invasion.
I mean Trump isn’t really someone who cares about deadlines or orders or laws or his own statements, so unless he really loves hitler, which of course is possible, I’m not gonna mark my calander. I’m sure if Trump decides he has enough legal cover to take these actions, he will just sign another executive order tomorrow making it so.
Is this real, or is it like a reverse QAnon/J6 kind of conspiracy theory? Sincerely asking. This hall all the hallmarks of typically right-wing unfounded conspiracy theories, but coming from the left (my own side, don't be mistaken about that). This is like stuff my right-wing Tea Partier grandma used to say about Obama, so I'm just trying to figure out if it's legit.
"The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I've just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away."
No, no, we LIKE the constitution. And when we don't, its amendableble. Attempting to ignore the Constitution entirely is how you get authoritarianism here.
That's not true, you already knew every single piece of information in there? I find that highly unlikely. It's fine if you didn't enjoy it but there's no need to be rude about something you don't fully understand.
America is a plutocracy. There's no democracy here except for the rich. The masses have no rights. People need to stop believing this myth that this nation is democratic. That's laughable. Brain dead americans have the perception of freedom and nothing else. This nation has been a police state all along. Project 2025 began in 1776.
The calls to “Resist!” will grow louder, and large-scale demonstrations will begin forming in major cities.
This is exactly what Trump wants. He didn’t invoke the Insurrection Act sooner because he needed his opposition to gather first — so he could use them as a tool for his next step.
Nah. What's actually happening doesn't matter, Trump will use protests to justify whatever he likes regardless of whether the protests are massive and widespread or just three guys and one sign. If we're going to protest, we might as well make it count by making them as large and effective as possible.
I'm not saying it won't happen or that Trump wouldn't love it. But we can't just say "on the 20th we're all fucked". This sub just instantly jumps to the absolute worst outcome on every topic.
but they're literally performing an investigation on whether invoking the insurrection act will be necessary - that is too much precedent to ignore, regardless of what we expect the outcome to be. speculation? maybe, but the project 2025 plans would indicate they are indeed trying to find excuses for martial law to solidify power. and historically, that type of event is how authoritarians consolidate power.
But also, that concept scares me a lot. The killing of pets in WW2 for the good of the country in England iirc. Fight for your dog the way they would fight for you dangit so we don't end up in a mess like that!
The article mentions two factors that might make protests more violent: a legitimate response to the Insurrection Act, and false-flag incitement by far-right agents provocateurs. It wasn't just suggesting that violence would appear from nowhere.
The following submission statement was provided by /u/Malara62:
The article argues that the U.S. will reach a "point of no return" on April 20, 2025, when Trump is expected to invoke the Insurrection Act, leading to authoritarian rule. It describes a step-by-step collapse of democratic institutions, including mass arrests, censorship, and indefinite postponement of elections. Malara62@reddit (OP)
No-Insurance100@reddit
I guarantee you that the author's idea of what "resisting it" isn't even close to what actually needs to happen
I think of the episode of Superstore when the liberal NPR-tote bag guy catches a store burglar in the act and says "I caught you, that means you have to stop" and the burglar replies "uh, no I don't".

perksofhalesx@reddit
There are lots of us protesting. There are mass protests April 5th, including DC. There are plenty of people doing more than just nothing. I hope everyone else joins the upcoming protests that can. Look up the 50501 movement for more information.
Contagious_Zombie@reddit
I'm sure that Trump will see the protest and then say sorry and everything will be all better.. Protests are better than nothing but they are also a tool in controlled opposition so the effect will be pretty limited and if it starts gaining an actual foothold the police will crush it. The civil rights took more than protesting.
passive_post@reddit
I have to say, I myself have fallen victim to showing up to a protest, having chats with people near me, and leaving. At the very LEAST, I would like to see much more emphasis on the organizing and community building aspect of protests. Orgs need to make themselves seen and vocal about the work they do, how you can educate yourself further, and how you can join them. Protests should be as much a ‘networking’ tool as they are a demonstration of our numbers and collective voice.
SignificantWear1310@reddit

holistivist@reddit
It’s important to protest regardless, simply to exercise our right to do it, especially in the wake of Trump now starting to call protests “illegal.”
Cloaked42m@reddit

This isn't a single protest.
perksofhalesx@reddit
Protests are a START. I’m aware the civil rights took more than protesting - but they were a key part. Even the ACLU is joining April 5th protest which is a huge deal. But I guess if you wanna sit on your ass and let these f@scists consolidate power then move out the way for people who are at least trying But to think that this will end peacefully is unrealistic.

Drunky_McStumble@reddit
Exactly. Most people, even politically-conscious activist type people, vastly underestimate just how much abject misery the general population is quite content to endure indefinitely. Things have to get so, so, so much worse before people even consider "rising up". And by the time things get that bad for that many, it's already way too late.
stasi_a@reddit

There are nationwide protests this weekend. While I am pessimistic that it will make any difference, not participating, if able is the same as not voting. You are agreeing to accept the boot on your neck. It is well past time for America to step up or STFU.
New-Acadia-6496@reddit
Just from another perspective - undercovers will probably film and use facial recognition on anyone protesting. New-Acadia-6496@reddit
Don't give them what they want and need.
eric-y2k@reddit
They are going to invoke martial law or use the Insurrection Act one way or another. It hardly matters if there’s an actual threat—look at all the other bullshit they rationalize (eg. we need to crash the economy to save the economy; we have to have Greenland)
unseemly_turbidity@reddit
Rubbish. If Trump feels he needs buildings on fire to declare martial law, he'll light buildings on fire. If he needs a resistance to demonise and there isn't one, he'll invent one.

The United States spends 800+ billion a year on the military
Myanmar spends 2.5 billion
YoSoyZarkMuckerberg@reddit
Adding context to what you're saying:
Myanmar: 54 million population US: 347 million population
Myanmar: 676k sq km US: 9.8 million sq km
The-G-Code@reddit
People and space doesn't really matter when you're talking about quantity of drones and weapons of mass destruction.
Reminder Myanmar is tropical, not primarily plains and cities.
YoSoyZarkMuckerberg@reddit
US military: 1.3 million active and 799k reserves
Myanmar military: 150k - 400k active
The differences in budget make perfect sense. Less soldiers, less land area, less population to control.
Also of note: The US maintains approximately 800 military bases around the planet. Myanmar has no outside military presence.

I'm sure there are some really prepper nutters with more than that nut most gun owners I know only have a few hundred or a thousand rounds.
thisisnorthe@reddit
While that may be true, your assumption relies on 100% retention of US government soldiers. Even if that were the case you would also have to assume that all logistics needed for said drones and hellfire missiles is still in place. Then on top of that you need to cover the entirety of the USA, which is approx 3,750,000 sq miles. Even at 100% retention, 100% logistics, and ATTEMPTING to cover the entire USA, they would still be outnumbered 3-1 if even only 2.5% of the population decided to dance with a reliable and effective rifle.

Don’t resign. Subtly sabotage from the inside.
The Simple Sabotage Field Manual (you can google it) identified several specific techniques for different types of targets. The following is a selection of tactics identified in the manual specifically for managers and supervisors.
Demand it in writing Ask endless questions and use long messages Make objections when possible Do everything possible to create delays Don’t provide the team with new tools and resources Demand the most expensive tools and resources and complain if you don’t get them Complete unimportant tasks first and give the essential functions to the least skilled team member Insist on perfection and accept defective work Give incomplete or misleading instructions when training new employees Reward poor performance Go to conferences and meetings to avoid getting the work done Create duplicate files Create policies and procedures for everything
You get the idea. If you’re not a manager, you’ll need slightly different tactics, but check out the manual for more ideas:

The claim is that on January 20th, Trump signed an executive order giving 90 days to determine if the immigration issue was considered as an invasion... At the 90 day mark if his cabinet determines that it is indeed an invasion trump would invoke war time powers so that he could use the military inside the USA to deal with the threat.
The fear is, this is what he wants, and his cabinet is most definitely going to say it is an invasion.

This is like stuff my right-wing Tea Partier grandma used to say about Obama, so I'm just trying to figure out if it's legit.

No, no, we LIKE the constitution. And when we don't, its amendableble. Attempting to ignore the Constitution entirely is how you get authoritarianism here.

Pretty sure someone already beat you to the Constitution. I hear it's already gone up in smoke.

Not just "Easter" but Regular Gregorian calendar Easter AND Orthodox Julian calendar Easter on the same day.

America is a plutocracy. There's no democracy here except for the rich. The masses have no rights. People need to stop believing this myth that this nation is democratic. That's laughable. Brain dead americans have the perception of freedom and nothing else. This nation has been a police state all along. Project 2025 began in 1776.

elihu@reddit
Nah. What's actually happening doesn't matter, Trump will use protests to justify whatever he likes regardless of whether the protests are massive and widespread or just three guys and one sign. If we're going to protest, we might as well make it count by making them as large and effective as possible.

I don't see the point in all this speculation. We have zero evidence this is going to happen and just makes this sub look insane.
aggressivewrapp@reddit
Zero evidence is insane are you illiterate or something?

I'm not saying it won't happen or that Trump wouldn't love it. But we can't just say "on the 20th we're all fucked". This sub just instantly jumps to the absolute worst outcome on every topic.
Chemical_Incident673@reddit
but they're literally performing an investigation on whether invoking the insurrection act will be necessary - that is too much precedent to ignore, regardless of what we expect the outcome to be. speculation? maybe, but the project 2025 plans would indicate they are indeed trying to find excuses for martial law to solidify power. and historically, that type of event is how authoritarians consolidate power.

UnluckyWriting@reddit
According to this article, the “plan” relies on growing protests getting more violent.
If anything it seems like protests have died down and none have become violent as far as I know.
I really don’t trust Trump but this particular is pretty baseless.
trambelus@reddit
The article mentions two factors that might make protests more violent: a legitimate response to the Insurrection Act, and false-flag incitement by far-right agents provocateurs. It wasn't just suggesting that violence would appear from nowhere.

StatementBot@reddit
The following submission statement was provided by /u/Malara62:
The article argues that the U.S. will reach a "point of no return" on April 20, 2025, when Trump is expected to invoke the Insurrection Act, leading to authoritarian rule. It describes a step-by-step collapse of democratic institutions, including mass arrests, censorship, and indefinite postponement of elections. The author presents this as a planned coup, following historical patterns, and urges readers to expose and resist it before it's too late.
