How old would you expect a kid to properly love a 'playden'?

We've recently moved into a garden where there would be space to put up a 'playden' (climbing ladder, Wendy house, little swing or slide, thingy) for our soon to be 5 year old (currently in Recpetion).
He's an only child, is a bundle of energy, and the rest of the garden isn't really child appropriate, so feels fair enough...
... But, how old would you expect a kid to be into one (both alone, and then getting mates over for play dates etc).
Would be a shame to lose the space and money for something with only a year or so of use.

Depends on size and 'feel' but I would say a good playden could last from age 3 or 4 to like 14, even older if used more as a hangout.

We used my neighbours until we all left home! It was big, away from the house, and you could see the drive so we had warning that parents were coming home!

If you're worried about longevity then go big, if that's an option. Somewhere where he and his friends can go for a smoke when they get older!

We had three kids, so ours got years of use and when we moved house, one of our neighbours asked if they could have it.

My nephew is 8yo and still uses his. If you get one large enough, it'll probably last him until he's 8 or 9. After that he'll be heading into the preteen years and probably won't use it as much.

Well I'm 38 and I'd still love one!

Until you catch him fingering his girlfriend in it on a warm summer evening.

Was still playing in a pallet shed at age 12.
That was still in the days of black and white telly though.
You'd need to run a wifi repeater out there these days.

Age of about 2-3 to late teens.

And when they’re a teen gradually move all their shit in there and change the house locks as a bit of a hint…
Hyperion2023@reddit
That was a dream of mine as a 5 year old, 6 year old, 7 year old… I’d still be loving that aged 11-12 for certain.
I’m pretty jealous right now come to think of it!

Go big !
It will last a lifetime time as a summer house 🏠
Need height !
Alas_boris@reddit
And then when they inevitably can't afford their own place you can rent it out to them!

Perfect 👌

3-7yrs old
Encourage that sort of play as much as you can cuz once they discover screens/ondemand content theyll favour that

My mum built a small wendy hut for my brother and filled it with sand and toy diggers, he spent more time in there than the actual house for about 5 years. So depends on your kid! If you know they like swings build a swing if they like climbing put a ladder up. Or get a trampoline?
bluejackmovedagain@reddit
It depends on the size. If it's a little kids one then he'll probably be bored of it by next summer. If it's the bigger sort that he's just old enough for then he might keep using it until the end of primary school.

We have a small one (little platform with a ladder and slide) for our 2 & 4 year old. They use it quite a bit but when their cousins come over to play it's stolen by the two 10 year old girls as their place to hang out. So it gets a lot more use than we thought it would!

Our garden was just a green blank slate so I have put shrubs and trees along one edge, put a mud kitchen in, and made a kind of round "hut" with large branches stacked up in one area.
This has been in place for the last 5 years.
Our daughter is now 9 and still loves it and plays there, so it's certainly not a waste of time if you make it large enough.

I remember having a summer house built for my kids when they were around 5 and 7.. took about 2 years for them to not use it at all and it became a glorified shed!
My daughter went off it because she saw one spider in there! And refused point blank to ever enter again.. And my son was always too busy on his bike or playing football.
It had a short revival in their early teens but only lasted one summer! Before I eventually had it taken down and had a pergola built instead. For me! That I love…

Maybe until nine or 10

I was into them from 2 years old (dated photo evidence) and if I had control, I'd do it now too. Just ask him and see what he likes at the park too.
Jaffacake91@reddit
Depends how big it is. Make sure it’s tall enough for an older child to stand up in and wide enough for a couple kids chairs and some toys and I’m sure you’ll get lots of use out of it! The climbing stuff and swing too. A smaller Wendy house and climbing area until 8 years old I’d say, and if it’s big enough for an adult to stand up in and the swing is strong enough for an adult then a lot longer than that.
Illustrious-Berry375@reddit
Every kid is different but if you can get/make a modular system you could “upgrade” the climbing parts as they age to keep interest.

Wendy house?

Make sure it’s full of his favourite things and it also becomes his safe space.
It needs to be a place he derives comfort, joy and safety from.
