I have a distinct memory around this movie, more vivid than just about any other memory. My family was watching it on Disney’s Sunday night movie. We were all sitting with on the couch eating chili on folding tv trays. I would go back to those days in a heartbeat!
Same. Natty Gann was definitely my first crush. I also should have realized there was something up with me being obsessed with stories about girls dressing up like boys. (I’m trans)
Me, as a little gay boy, loved this movie because I wanted I always wanted/needed a tough tomboy girl to protect me (with her wolf)
See also me thinking I had a crush on Anna Chulmsky in "My Girl" because I, as a little gay boy I always wanted/needed a tough tomboy girl to protect me (minus the wolf) and didn't have the awareness to express why.
I shared this fun fact with my slightly younger Millennial friends a couple of weeks ago. “Isn’t that cool Patton Oswalt married Meredith Salinger?” “Who??” “You know, Natty Gann.” “What are you talking about???” I felt like an ancient, old hag.
And from what I read, she’s very lovely and respectful of Michelle with their kids. She hasn’t taken over, she’s left her pictures up. She’s not at all threatened. Which is so nice because this isn’t my personal experience with my dad’s new one. I’m so happy for them given the tragedy they’ve suffered.
I know the feeling as someone who has had a stepmother that's basically hated me my whole life, and looked at me and my siblings as extra baggage from a previous marriage. I've totally been there.
I’m so sorry you understand. I love my dad but I wish he was like Patton in this way. From what I know of him, he’d never even consider dating someone who wasn’t like her. My dad was so desperate to have a wife he accepted anyone. She was his employee too. So gross.
And she was not nice while my mom was alive (they officially got together when I was 18) but since died she’s amped up the mean.
That's kind of the situation that my dad was/is in. Basically, after he and my mom divorced, he got married for a short time to one lady who really used him, and he finally divorced her, but ultimately he married my stepmom, which he is currently married to, but the thing is these two fight like cats and dogs. I honestly don't understand how anyone could marry somebody that they have such a toxic relationship with. Actually, I kind of do know why he did marry her, and it has to do with the religion that they belong to. You see, I grew up in a Mormon family, and the Mormons have this belief that the only way to reach the highest kingdom of heaven is to be married, so basically people will marry the most fucked up people so long as they can get into heaven.
The only thing that ever came out good about that marriage was my little sister who was born, and is probably one of the closest people to me, but I'm sure that conception process was not easy for my dad and stepmom. I mean, i'm pretty sure that was some serious hate fucking that was going on there.
If you like The Journey of Natty Gann, you’d probably also love another live-action drama from Disney in 1983: Never Cry Wolf. God that is such a gorgeous movie.
I’ve been wanting to watch this movie for like…40 years.
I remember seeing the trailer on the previews for another movie we rented on VHS, and thinking I want to see this!
We never rented Natty Gann. I never got to pick what we watched (invisible middle child). As a young adult, I was poor and didn’t have access to older movies. Natty faded to the back of my memories.
I have Disney+ now. I should watch it. If I had time.
Same here! An older family friend would refer to me as Natty Gann because he said I reminded him of the character, but having never watched it, I didn't get it. I also had no idea John Cusak was in it - firing up Disney+ now.
I lived for the Disney free subscription drive week as a kid. They often played Journey of Natty Gann, Looking For Miracles (anyone remember that?), and Jane of Lantern Hill. I loved all of them and would always try to talk my parents into getting a blank tape so I could record them.
Wow, if you'd said the title, I'd have said I've never seen that movie, but I just watched the trailer and I definitely have seen it. Probably literally not since the 80s.
Same, after watching the trailer I've seen it. This is exactly where I got my hobo train hopping ideas from.. Those trains move a hell of a lot faster than you'd expect up close, nearly pulled my arm off!
I remember having some strong feelings about this film. Like...I didn't know why but it was different and it meant something to me? What does this film mean to y'all?

White Fang was great! Ethan Hawke, right?
VegetarianCoating@reddit

Also starring Ray Wise, a brilliant actor. He played Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks and was also in an amazing Beach House music video.

Until I rediscovered it on Disney+ I was sure Natty was played by Justine Bateman!
Anyway, it's a great movie. You just don't see many of those family films with kids roaming the country anymore.
