Kinda feel bad about posting this

Otherwise serviceable bodega / Spanish (El Salvadorian) deli with a full lunch buffet. Great beans, rice, chicken, solid lunch option.
I definitely will not name the place and give them any bad press.
Today I noticed a steam tray full of these whole fried fish and inquired about them since they appeared quite unusual. The owner's eyes lit up, it is some kind of traditional thing they make. He insisted I try one and packed it up for me on the house.
I tried to have an open mind, but... it is just absolutely disgusting. Appearance, smell, taste. Tried a courtesy nibble of some of the very salty and fishy grizzle left on the bones.
I'm sorry, I consider myself an adventurous eater, but this is "a no for me dog".
Great place, will go again.

I'm sitting here shitting, and this pops up. I made the disgusted face to this, over the stench coming from my porcelain throne.
aHEMagain@reddit
I too am sitting on the throne while reddit’ing. I wonder if there’s a sub for that?

Those are good.

Take it to work and microwave it for lunch
SadLilBhabie@reddit
Microwaving fish should be a cardinal sin.

Looks similar to daing (dried fish in the Philippines). It (daing) comes in many varieties, though the best way to eat it here is dipped in vinegar or soy sauce/vinegar combo, with pickled veggies/tomatoes/etc. and with rice.
It can taste very salty or strong depending on the fish, and not everyone likes eating the scales (since it's dried whole and occasionally refried). If it's crispy enough, even the head and some of the bones can be eaten.
I'm not sure about what this specific thing is, but there's enough similarities to daing that I'd eat it. It's common enough here that everyone eats it, but it's understandable for people unfamiliar with it

Really love how it looks with those scales - I thought this was a dead bird with the head torn off at first, that's how much the scales looked like feathers at a first glance!

Great treat for you cat!

Very confused by grizzle. Do you mean gristle? 🤔
Adam7288@reddit (OP)
Yea! Never realized that is how you spell it. I learned something today.

I hope I didn't come across as snarky or anything. I just wanted to make sure I completely understood. 😊

To me that looks delicious and I'm a vegetarian

looks like what my dad and i would have while ice fishing when i was a kid.
First catch gets put on the mini grill while we set up more tip-ups and the sonar. Eat the grilled/smoke fish for breakfast while the car defroster gets the hamberger patties thawed enough to peel apart for lunch.

Such a lovely memory
MaeR1n@reddit
Lmao, thabks. That was before I got an insane fear of being out on the ice. my uncle, dad, and I went out when i was about 10, Still sleepy i was in the car, slowly got out as they finished drilling a hole, and immediately went "get back in the truck". I saw the ice was about half an inch thick and trecked to the nearest land and walked all the way around the lake to meet them at the landing where they drove back to.
No way was i getting back in there and driving past a hole on that sheet of ice

Wow, but you did it anyway 👏
Ambitious-Body8133@reddit
It may look gross to some. But that's what a smoked fish looks like. I bet it slaps, and I'm jealous 👍
bigbimbobutterfly@reddit
I smoke fish at my job and it looks nothing like this. Descale that bitch at least
Ambitious-Body8133@reddit
Agreed, it should be descaled, but you can eat around it. We speak ours in a brine and them smoke them over the fire in our bush camps, and they do get twisted like this.
YouFeedTheFish@reddit
Eat it with chopsticks and sticky rice.
refused26@reddit
And vinegar
Sure_Bodybuilder7121@reddit
A dash of soy sauce plus some crunchy daikon or kimchi and I bet it's delicious

I mean I’ve eaten sardines like that, fried with scales and all. This fish is too big to serve like that though.

I live for this style of fish and my mouth is watering! On rice with some chili paste and a side of veggies... impossible to beat. Still, I understand it's not for everyone. Good of you to try.

Fish flops after a fire?

It looks like they left the scales on.
