EPIC stands for East Plano Islamic Center; they want to build a housing development for Muslims in Josephine, about 40 miles north of Dallas.
The state GOP is freaking out.
jeremysbrain@reddit
Yeah, god forbid people other than Christians be allowed to build and own homes near their church.
Arrasor@reddit
Wait we have housing developments where they can discriminate based on religion? Just great.
artificialevil@reddit
What’s the difference between that and a collective of hippies buying up a bunch of land and building a commune?
Top_Willingness_1310@reddit
Do you think the communes are discriminating similar to the way a community under Sharia law would?
ppham1027@reddit
We out here doing post-9/11 islamophobia still?
Top_Willingness_1310@reddit
We are not, our Islamic neighbors are an incredibly valuable asset and rich culture to learn a lot from. Mentioning shariah law and asking a question does not imply Islamophobia.
whatitpoopoo@reddit
And what is sharia law?
Top_Willingness_1310@reddit
“Sharia is a body of religious law that forms a part of the Islamic tradition based on scriptures of Islam, particularly the Qu’ran and Hadith.”
I do not support any communities founded upon religion. It is not Islam that is my issue here, it is the religious component. I would be against an evangelical community equally the same. There seems to be a knee jerk response that anyone against this is Islamophobic, which is certainly accurate for many people, but is not the only reason someone might not support the development.
whatitpoopoo@reddit
As far as I know ow there's no mandate to be muslim or abide by sharia law in the hoa or contract for this community. It seems to have just raised eyebrows about being advertised to that group, and uses the on site masjid as a selling point. So it's a little bit questionable, but not outright illegal imo
Brave-Talk@reddit
The developers stated they would not impose “blanket bans on any group of people” but would conduct “thorough individualized assessments of prospective buyers” to ensure alignment with community goals of “safety and security.”
whatitpoopoo@reddit
Hmmm that's an eyebrow raiser for sure.
Brave-Talk@reddit
More than an eyebrow raise. This is America there shouldn’t be communities specifically built for a religious group.
Brave-Talk@reddit
More than an eyebrow raise. This is America there shouldn’t be communities specifically built for a religious group.
Top_Willingness_1310@reddit
I doubt there is anything illegal about their plans, and frankly, Josephine would largely benefit from their new neighbors, the Islamic community has been nothing but kind and welcoming in my experience. I still do not support it on principle.
whatitpoopoo@reddit
So how far away does a neighborhood need to be away from a mosque to make it ok for you?
Top_Willingness_1310@reddit
Ideally the neighborhood would not be built around a central place of worship.
whatitpoopoo@reddit
Why not?
whatitpoopoo@reddit
There is nothing discriminatory in the language of the housing contracts.
artificialevil@reddit
Read up about Rajneeshpuram. I would say that committing the largest bioterrorism attack in US history is a pretty militant way to trying to exclude people and ideas from your community.
Top_Willingness_1310@reddit
Interesting, I hadn’t heard about this before thank you for sharing.
Plcoomer@reddit
Do I have to grow my hair out and not shower often? Because I’m ok with that.
Historical_Dentonian@reddit
Better than the nondenominational churches near me. Their clerical requirements are tough. Molesting tweens and frequenting gay prostitutes is bridge too far for me.
USMCLee@reddit
Pretty sure anyone can buy the house but the development is marketed to specific religions.
There is a big Catholic one off Sandy Lake. Might even be a church in the middle that HOA dues are used to maintain.
AccomplishedFlan7507@reddit
Yes, by all means try to go buy a house in that development.
MrZeppy@reddit
No we don’t, anyone can buy the house if the wish
ilvbras@reddit
Not the case here
A_Homestar_Reference@reddit
I will admit I've never seen a church here build houses and sell them exclusively to Christians, so that does seem weird to me.
lathamb_98@reddit
They’re selling them to anyone. Not just Muslims. Feel free to move there.
A_Homestar_Reference@reddit
I'm sure its still aimed towards Muslims though. Like how student housing can be used by anyone but all of the incentives make it so its still 95% students in off-campus housing.
lathamb_98@reddit
That is not what they are doing either. It’s a subdivision. Go buy one or leave them alone.
A_Homestar_Reference@reddit
Why so hostile? Calm down dude. You're projecting onto me things that I haven't even done.
The top comment said that they are building a housing development and other comments pointed out that they are focusing on muslim-oriented amenities. All I did was point out that I've never seen any church or other religious group do this. If there's more to it then I literally do not know the full story and i'm only operating off of knowledge from this post.
Seriously pisses me off when people take nuance or hesitation as outright hostility.
jtx91@reddit
Actually, you have. Open your eyes a little wider and think for a minute because I absolutely believe that you believe this. But really take the time to consider the thought of, “hmm….why IS there always a church in every small town in America?”
And then think about this - is what these folks are doing actually any different than what happens all around you every day? And maybe the fact that it’s not a church…is causing some cognitive dissonance. We all have blind spots and I am not criticizing you in any way at all. I just want you to really deep down think about it.
Take a look at this map: https://imgur.com/a/EnJBKtK
Why do some of these churches have the name of a city in their official title? Because when the community was built they intentionally added ____ focused amenities <— fill in that blank
SydWander@reddit
There being a lot of churches isn’t the same as a church buying a sub division lmao
jtx91@reddit
You have the same blind spot.
lathamb_98@reddit
Not sure I'm the one that needs to be calm. Also not sure that anyone cares what you find weird, or what seriously pisses you off. If you're going to be so sensitive to the tone of people on the internet, maybe better understand what you're posting about first. Live and let live.
jeremysbrain@reddit
They won't have to. The fact that the area will only include a Muslim school and church, most non-Muslim families won't want to live there. My guess these will all be houses that people in nearby areas, like Josephine or Caddo Mills can't afford. Plus, their website originally seemed to say that many of the homes were going to be sold to immigrants from other countries.
ContextWorking976@reddit
How is this a criminal matter?

Mod note: There is no single Islamic culture just like there's no single Christian culture or Hindu or any other culture. The biggest definer of how a culture treats its women is how conservative their religions are. This is a universal trait. Trying to paint all Islamic cultures as being conservative is not appropriate.
truth-4-sale@reddit
Curious as to where the funding is coming from, ultimately.
helic_vet@reddit
Saudi Arabia and Qatar
truth-4-sale@reddit
Or S.A.
JohnPaulDavyJones@reddit
EPIC has is a pretty big congregation, and they had so many doctors and medical professionals that their ability to reopen any mode of conventional-adjacent worship safely during Covid was pretty hotly debated. It’s the equivalent of (size-wise) of a megachurch like Watermark, but with a congregation that skews toward higher-income professions. I guess one could call it a “megamosque”, but I’ve never heard that term used before.
So that’s the background for the underlying funding, but they’re not just self-funding the project, just exploring the possibility of underwriting it through a corporation stood up to manage the project, which is called Community Capital Partners.
The actual operational capital will come from people paying to reserve lots; anyone interested in reserving a spot in EPIC City (the name of the project, which is a series of three planned developments) has to put up $80,000 to reserve a lot. EPIC City has 1,000 lots in the main development, and they had ~500 reserved within days of the project kickoff, so that’s $40,000,000 right there to begin construction.
The project has a well-written and well-sourced Wikipedia page for anyone curious.
SquirrelQueasy2456@reddit
AND ITS NOTHING WRONG WITH WHAT THEY ARE WANTING TO CREATE FOR THEIR CULTURE AND COMMUNITY. I LIVE IN ROYSE CITY, 3 miles from Josephine and what they are wanting to create for them does not put me in fear at all!
This land belongs to GOD and people need to stop trying to control what GOD has produced.
OneBadHarambe@reddit
Just make sure the women use the rear entrance.
msondo@reddit
Why are they freaking out now? Irving already has several neighborhoods off 161 that seem to be targeted to the local muslim community. They are built next to the mosque, have an islamic aesthetic, are named things like “Alhambra Estates”, and even have streets named after Islamic people. They have a couple of banger restaurants in the area.
JohnPaulDavyJones@reddit
More east than north, but yup.
My aunt lives in Josephine. We basically just go up to Plano and head due east about twenty miles through Wylie and then Lavon.

Hi, I’m a member of this mosque. Y’all are right about how this is nonsense. I just wanted to say about the negative things said about Islam, there is 10 times more misinformation than correct information out there about Islam. I recommend yall just take a peak at it before believing sources that have every reason to lie and manufacture hatred toward Islam. If you’d like, ask me any questions even though I’m not a scholar.

The chief preacher is openly encouraging the members of EPIC to go out and change the minds of others and bring about a cultural and political revolution in The USA.
Any guesses about what the revolution might be about?
PhysicsDeep8164@reddit
My guy, he’s saying preach to anyone who’s interested, not mind wipe them with a machine😭. Almost every religion does this man, like the Christians handing out fliers or talking to people about Jesus Christ. The “revolution” is that people will make change because they came back to god, and we live in… you know… a democracy. He’s not condoning or supporting any violence or indoctrination.
mistiquefog@reddit
He is from Pakistan. And we know what a revolution Pakistan is
PhysicsDeep8164@reddit
You need to edit what you said to make sense grammatically, but I understand part of what you said is he’s from Pakistan. He is not. He was born in Houston and is an American just like anyone else. America doesn’t have a race, it doesn’t matter what your race is, you can be American. You’re sounding kinda racist man.
mistiquefog@reddit
Qadhi was born in Houston, Texas to Pakistani Muhajir parents.[15] His father, a doctor by profession, founded the first mosque in the area, while his mother is a microbiologist, both from Karachi in Pakistan and whose ancestral homeland is Uttar Pradesh in India.
Oh God he is actually from more radical school of thought than I had imagined.
PhysicsDeep8164@reddit
Now you’re going off topic. I told you what he meant and I’m right. You know I’m right, so you’re bringing up his elders from long ago. Yasser studied around the world, his opinions have nothing to do with what his parents believe, and he has spoken against those beliefs publicly. You’re not going anywhere with this.
mistiquefog@reddit
We have his words from himself. There is no doubt about what he is saying.
His parents believe in Islam as does he.
PhysicsDeep8164@reddit
Alr man, if you wanted to be fair, you’d have understood he is talking about a cultural revolution. Hes condemned violence countless times, and no sane person thinks Muslims could create a revolution in America. But if you want to believe he’s inciting violence, even though he’s not, you will. I think you should take a second to analyze your prejudices.
mistiquefog@reddit
You are the one prejudiced.
Why would he talk about violence when he can bring about a change in the state at the ballot box?
He knows that violence will not work, hence he is laying the ground work for the next 500 years via demographic change.
We have seen that in the UK
PhysicsDeep8164@reddit
He’s not gonna turn people Pakistani by showing them Islam. Hes talking about showing America Islam, and if it wants it, there will therefore be change… because we are a democracy. What you’re saying is people shouldn’t be allowed to convert to islam, and if they do, they shouldn’t be allowed to vote. Also how am I prejudiced? Can’t just say that without backing.
mistiquefog@reddit
Yup it's all a conversion and produce more children game.
PhysicsDeep8164@reddit
Can’t believe I didn’t check your profile earlier. Conservative Indian, no surprise you hate Muslims in America when your nation is constantly and increasingly oppressing them. Sad, just know modi lies and he’s not god.
mistiquefog@reddit
Hmm a bit of history lesson :-
Muslims and Hindus constituted two distinct nations and that the two could not coexist under a single government-- Mohammad Ali Jinnah founder of Pakistan.
So I wonder when a separate nation was given, why did Muslims not migrate to the country they demanded for?
If Muslims are being oppressed in India, I don't see anyone running away to Bangladesh or Pakistan. Fact is that India faces monumental illegal infiltration by Muslims from Bangladesh.
I wonder why Muslims live in such oppressive conditions in India and just don't cross over into the country they demanded.
Throwawaysei95@reddit
Just admit you’re racist lol
OneBadHarambe@reddit
Are you still going to have an oppressive rear entrance for the "sisters" like this one in McKinney?
McKinney, Texas - Google Maps
PhysicsDeep8164@reddit
I’m not gonna deny this entrance is sub optimal, but it’s not “oppressive”. It’s not some back alley, it’s just as open and exposed as any other entrance. The reason the woman were given the back one, which still, is suboptimal, is because men are required to come to the mosque to some prayers, while women are not, making male attendance bigger. But the mosque management was still not okay with this design, so they are currently working on a new custom-built building, with an entrance similar to epic IANT, or any other purpose built mosque, which for some reason you ignore. Point is, this was a small and poor mosque when it started, so they had to rent out a suboptimal non purpose built location, with many more flaws for all attendees than this. LMK if you have questions or disagree.
ultimatejourney@reddit
I’m honestly more concerned about the sprawl aspect of it - we are losing our good farmland to development. I think there’s an opportunity here but I’m not sure a traditional American development is it.
PhysicsDeep8164@reddit
I actually had the same concern, I even wrote an email to the board. The thing is, they are not acting for-profit, so it’s hard to get the capital to buy land in existing suburbs. At least they are building a lot of townhomes and apartments.🤷♂️

Mynameisdiehard@reddit
Well there is also the Fair Housing Act which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, religion, etc. Making a development where only those of a specific religion can buy is illegal. It's the exact same as when they would only allow white people into certain developments.
ContextWorking976@reddit

TryNotToAnyways2@reddit
Epic has stated multiple times they will comply with all Fair housing laws. Since this is still just a concept and they haven't actually sold anything yet, it's not possible that they have broken any Fair housing laws. So no need for an investigation. Yet the governor still felt compelled to slander Epic with implications of criminality.
jtx91@reddit

Hot_Tonight_5720@reddit
I saw that one too. There are a few Muslim-centric neighborhoods in the metroplex and I know of at least one neighborhood developed by a Christian church.
It’s not unusual for churches to develop neighborhoods. Many have expanded into housing and community development in recent years. it even has a name, faith-based development.
SydWander@reddit
This is the first I’ve heard of a church doing this. I will need to look this up. Personally, I don’t believe any religion should be able to do this.

It isn't 2010 anymore, r/atheism isn't a default sub.
PutTheDogsInTheTrunk@reddit
I’m agnostic. Most religions suck and make people feel bad about normal human behavior.
Even ones that seem kind of neutral, e.g. Buddhism, have been used to whip people into supporting mass murder.
A_Homestar_Reference@reddit
thank god we can blame that solely on spirituality and not human behavior
PutTheDogsInTheTrunk@reddit
Also, you didn’t refute the substance of my comment, that dogma is used to curtail normal behavior. Among other bad outcomes, restrictions on sexuality leads to people finding out they’re sexually incompatible after they’re already married.
A_Homestar_Reference@reddit
I'm not refuting it because its not wrong, but like you said its simply a tool evil people can use for bad purposes. So I think its bizarre to hate religion as a concept and religious people as a whole when you should really be blaming the people and organizations that exploit it.
PutTheDogsInTheTrunk@reddit
Religion is just another tool in the oppressor’s kit. Religious people are easier to exploit since they already take things on faith and without evidence. C’mon.
