Did I pay $1500 for oil changes?
Posted by wellthisisawkward86@reddit | Autos | View on Reddit | 341 comments
I’m going back over my contracts a month later and if I’m not mistaken, I paid almost $1500 for 12 oil changes. It’s a 2022 CX-5. Not sure if they’re more expensive than the $60 I paid for my car..
8N-QTTRO@reddit
that's $125 per oil change. The CX-5 takes 4.5 quarts of 0w20 oil. That means you'd probably be buying 5 quarts and spending $45 on oil. A filter is around $12 as well. That means you're paying around $70 in labor for both the oil change and disposal of the old oil, which is pretty reasonable, all things considered. I wouldn't stress over it.
ImReallyFuckingHigh@reddit
Where the fuck you spending $45 on 5 quarts? 5 quarts of Mobil 1 is <$30 at Walmart
8N-QTTRO@reddit
I did this math with five minutes of googling to make OP feel like less of a chump. Pretty sure I got prices from Autozone and didn't hunt for better deals, since OP clearly doesn't do that either.
ImReallyFuckingHigh@reddit
Yea parts store oil is stupid expensive
Swing_Top@reddit
Save's you going into a walmart though.
MarkVII88@reddit
Kirkland Signature Full Synthetic motor oil is $30 for 10 qt at Costco. It comes in several different oil weight ratings and is very decent oil. It should be perfectly fine to use in most normal passenger vehicles that aren't being raced or towing heavy loads all the time. You can buy oil filters in bulk off Amazon or RockAuto for under $10 each.
jbglol@reddit
Do not buy filters from Amazon, they are frequently found to be knockoffs. RockAuto is pretty good.
Constant-Anteater-58@reddit
Do not buy generic oil filters anywhere. Most are trash. Especially super tech.
Mr_MacGrubber@reddit
And the normal Fram filters. Most cheap ones are just cardboard inside and don’t hold up at all.
Motor_Medium6281@reddit
When I buy a lot of parts for my car I find what parts are from the same warehouse and only order the others if I really need them and it's worked okay so far
Clegko@reddit
Rockauto gets you on shipping if you're not careful. So annoying sometimes.
InstructionMoney4965@reddit
You mean RockAuto shows you how much shipping costs rather than burying it into the price or a subscription fee
Clegko@reddit
No, I mean they can catch you out on shipping cost from multiple different warehouses if you're not paying attention.
greenday568@reddit
I will say even with shipping rockauto was still the cheapest when I needed a new headlight on my old car every where else I looked wanted 350 to 400 rockauto with shipping was just a hair over 200 I think
Clegko@reddit
Yup. They can be awesome most of the time. I get annoyed when things end up coming from 3-4 different warehouses, each with $10-$15 in shipping. Really eats into the cost savings lol.
Biggeasy@reddit
Yea i usually purchase consumable filters and wiper blades when I purchase a part i actually need for repair. Add the main repair part to your cart, then add several of each type of consumable you're looking for. Then view your cart and it'll tell you the warehouse locations, and you can remove all the ones that don't align with the warehouse your main part is shipping from so you only have the one shipping charge to pay.
Opposite-Degree7361@reddit
Also if you add an item you know you need to your cart and then go back and look at the catalog, any item with a red truck now on next to the name means it ships on the same truck. Sometimes it will still split depending on weight but I've found by removing certain items and adding them in a different order I can sometimes get around the weight splitting.
Clegko@reddit
Yup yup. Always a fun game to play. I always make sure I check out the closeouts too. Great deals to be found there for sure.
thomassowellistheman@reddit
My secrets for buying from Rock Auto: 1. Buy in bulk. Get 3 of every maintenance item you need for all your vehicles (filters, wipers, etc) 2. Don’t be in a hurry.
Tr0z3rSnak3@reddit
I've had good luck with A1auto, also they usually have videos on how to change the part so that's nice
ancillarycheese@reddit
I definitely buy from them because of their videos.
Aromatic-Scratch3481@reddit
Amazon basics motor oil is great tho. There's only a couple places that make oil so it's the same as some other products essentially but no name brand. It'd sn+ rated so I can enjoy high rpms in a turbo car. I've even seen people do Blackstone analysis vs other brands in car groups I'm in.
caoimhin64@reddit
I bought "Gillette" razor blades from Amazon. They were knockoff and I only noticed when they cut me.
Bought some off brand tools - they were made of some type of cheese. Never again.
If either of those was an oil filter which broke down internally I'd never know and my engine would be destroyed.
Amazon is great for big brands and expensive consumer electronics. Once you're in the world of stuff which a regular customer wouldn't spot a mile away if it was counterfeit, it's a disaster.
MarkVII88@reddit
I cross-reference part numbers from sites like RockAuto or AutoZone or O'Reilly's when searching Amazon, and I can often find a 2-pack of genuine filters for less than the price of one single filter at the parts store. I will buy enough filters to perform a year's worth of oil changes.
jbglol@reddit
They will send you counterfeits that have the same packaging and part numbers, but was not made to the same standards. It is vastly cheaper for a reason.
If you want to gamble on it go ahead, but numerous people have found counterfeit auto parts shipped from Amazon and an oil filter is not worth the chance.
wwiybb@reddit
That's where I'm at. Can't trust supply chains. Walmart, Amazon is a no.
jbglol@reddit
Walmart carries OEM filters in store, those I have used for years without issue. They are shipped directly from real suppliers. Their online store? Probably also counterfeit
Mr_MacGrubber@reddit
I use Kirklands oil but no way in hell am I buying random cheapo filters off Amazon. They’re probably all cardboard inside and don’t last. I personally get Wix XP filters at O’Reily’s for $15 which is a quality filter. Don’t buy Fram or some other shit filter.
Ludwig_Vista2@reddit
That's not really the point. OP is having their car serviced at a dealership
MarkVII88@reddit
Yeah whooptie doo. Point is OP paid a fuck ton in advance for 12 oil changes.
DanR5224@reddit
And financed it, at that.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
That is my point. I only got it a month ago and I looked at the total of all the coverage I got and now that I’m going back over it, I’m thinking no way in hell this is $1500 for just oil changes. So if that’s what it is, I will cancel it with the warranty company because I haven’t used them
Chicken_Zest@reddit
Are you going to change it yourself? Is the warranty still valid if you bring it to Joe's Lube Shop to get an oil change? Read your T's & C's carefully.
The price you're paying for 12 oil changes is like triple what you'd pay to do it yourself, but probably only 10-20% more than a normal quicklube place and with I'm sure a lot less upselling and hassle.
danbfree@reddit
>Is the warranty still valid if you bring it to Joe's Lube Shop to get an oil change?
This was answered yes, legally, 50 years ago by the Magnusson-Moss act. Literally, since 1975 it's been legally decided you can get your servicing done anywhere, I can't believe people STILL don't know this!
sebastiand1@reddit
I’m pretty sure the service contract is only valid at the dealership she purchased the car. Meaning she can’t get the oil change anywhere else but it wouldn’t void her warranty. I worked at dealerships all my working years.
danbfree@reddit
Correct, I was only referring to the warranty.
Chicken_Zest@reddit
Sorry, confusing wording on my part. I was trying to ask about having a friend or family member change it (Joe's lube shop like your neighbor Joe's garage). In my head it made sense sense but I can see now that it was definitely crap wording on my part.
experimentalengine@reddit
Magnuson-Moss allows you to change your oil yourself without affecting the manufacturer’s warranty, if you document that you did it as prescribed by the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. (Hypothetically speaking,) if you took it to the dealer and they failed to document the oil changes, the manufacturer could deny a warranty claim based on the idea that you had skipped oil changes. The documentation is more important than who does it.
danbfree@reddit
Yes, if it you do it yourself you just have to save the receipts for the parts/oil.
pausled@reddit
Oh no, with way, waaaay more upselling and hassle. I’ve taken good (and bad) deals on dealership oil changes and the one thing Hyundai and Toyota both have in common is trying to triple the price on a three hour oil change.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
I can’t do it myself but it’s only valid at a Mazda dealership. I bought it at one about 75mi away, but also…the Mazda in my city is absolute trash so I would never go there
Chicken_Zest@reddit
Sounds like you know the answer. Cancel it. You'll save a little money and a lot of convenience.
FatBoyStew@reddit
Its not an insane per oil change price though suprisingly. Not the best for how much his car takes oil wise, but could've been way worse. Not a fan of dropping $1500 up front though lmfao
Remote_Presentation6@reddit
It was $38 or $39 last time I looked here. (Within the last month).
MarkVII88@reddit
https://www.costco.com/s?keyword=0w20
Online via Costco.com - $70 for 20 qt of motor oil.
ArtQuixotic@reddit
TIL I'm paying too much for motor oil. :D
FordTough91@reddit
Very true, but the problem with this method is that it will avoid your warranty if you can't produce receipts saying you had the oil change.
TurtleMcTurtl@reddit
Everything from a parts store is stupid expensive. Rockauto has my heart forever and always <3 :)
and you get cool magnets :)
cd29@reddit
My autozone does 5qt full synthetic oil change deals with filter starting at $35
tato_salad@reddit
I had one guy on ask mechanics argue with me that oil change places acutally spend MORE than the parts store oil LOL... No..
I mean this price aint awful, in the winter I pay about 120 for 6.5 quarts at speedy lube if I can't do my own.
NigraOvis@reddit
Sadly it has to be, because they don't get enough customers to keep the lights on.
wwiybb@reddit
Can be yeah just have to look around or keep an eye out for sales.
specialty stuff I have needed was cheaper at Napa then Walmart
ImReallyFuckingHigh@reddit
Nah fuck that I like knowing what I’m about to pay before I even plan to go, you often need to get a filter to get the deal and I get those bulk ordered of RockAuto anyhow. <$35 for 5 quarts of Mobil 1 adv high mileage and a Wix filter.
Shit it’s $25 to get Walmart brand oil and a fram filter, I’d only do that for a shotbox but honestly Walmart oil isn’t terrible for the price.
Clegko@reddit
As long as you're not getting the orange can Fram filters, they're perfectly cromulent.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
I was asking because this was part of an extended warranty package and I could still cancel it because I haven’t used it. It wasn’t priced individually, but sold as part of the bumper to bumper warranty. I’ve only owned cars so IDK what oil changes cost for crossovers. I wanted honest feedback, not for you to tell me what makes me feel better
Toptech1959@reddit
At our shop outside of Austin Tx a 5w30 full synthetic for that car runs $94.50 out the door. 12 oil changes would be $1,1134.00
LeetcodeForBreakfast@reddit
is it rolled into your auto loan? if so you are financing oil changes and i’d cancel it and just pay them as you go. but $100-150 per oil change is pretty avg for an economy car around seattle so not that big of a deal as far as price
Stoogefrenzy3k@reddit
should go ahead cancel, and then save that money for something else if its just only oil.. it's like they will invest your money and make even more interests into it, when you could be saving that difference and building interest and then pay your own or have it serviced and knowing you had the whole control of money.
Triscuitmeniscus@reddit
It’s a ripoff, definitely cancel it.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
I did! Thank you
Bubbly_Positive_339@reddit
I was able to cancel this plan. It might even be with the same company.
8N-QTTRO@reddit
You should definitely cancel it then. Not a good use of your money by any means.
Broken-mofo-333@reddit
Let’s be real—OP isn’t changing their own oil.
8N-QTTRO@reddit
Well, yeah.
Affectionate_Row1486@reddit

AwarenessGreat282@reddit
No excuse. Weak google-fu.
biovllun@reddit
Auto stores have terrible oil prices. You can get good oil and good filter at Walmart for the price of just oil at the Auto store.
Neillboyz_13@reddit
How considerate
ryyparr@reddit
Walmart oil is not the same formulation as autopart Stores formulations. Big name brands that sell their products at Walmart,Costco, etc will use lesser quality materials for bargain retail locations. You can see on the oil it will say formulated for Walmart. It may be the same brand less price but it’s not the same oil. Same reason why bestbuy wont price match Walmart on TVs because it’s not the same televisions, they use different internals.
BassObjective@reddit
Autozone prices
Top-Weather-4153@reddit
Ya this ain’t fucking Walmart it’s a dealership
Unhappy_Pineapple_40@reddit
Oh I spend like a little over $50 for 5q of oil, though I use Royal Purple. A KnN oil filter + Lucas high mileage oil treatment + injector cleaner + fuel/fuel system treatment +
onlyhav@reddit
In their defense, oil prices have gone up. I did my oul change a few weeks ago and 5 quarts was at or above 39 dollars everywhere I looked.
KingPhilip01@reddit
Buddy has never heard of shop fees or surcharges.
Besides, shops aren’t buying their fucking oil from Walmart 😐
raulsagundo@reddit
We are talking mobil 1 here, not Walmart brand. If they can't get it cheaper perhaps they should be buying it from Walmart
935meister@reddit
Even then the Walmart brand oil is perfectly fine. YouTube channels like project farm and The Oil Guy have already proved that.
troubledbrew@reddit
I've toyed with that idea, but driving to Walmart several times a month to keep the shelves full would be cost prohibitive for a shop.
It's way different when you're doing your own oil changes to gather the supplies vs keeping a shop supplied with different oil and filter requirements for all of their customers.
caverunner17@reddit
Correct, they are buying oil in bulk, likely for cheaper. $125/oil change is pretty high from an independent shop, but probably in line from a stealership.
xhipskylark@reddit
$130 for full synthetic (5 qts) at my local quick change. Cost me $47 to do it myself. JUST called around last week cuz I was curious.
Ambereggyolks@reddit
$125 for an oil change is expensive but considering they don't have to do anything but drop it off and pick it up, it could be worse.
Thugmeet@reddit
Bulk cheapest of the cheap oil
KingPhilip01@reddit
100%
I was just pointing out the Walmart analogy as pointless in this context.
ImReallyFuckingHigh@reddit
No they aren’t, they often pay even less than that. I pay $15 in labor if I have an oil change done, $70 is ridiculous
good_from_afar@reddit
So why did you bring up walmart prices at all? Shops will buy in bulk and get cheaper but they are marking it up because they are ... checks notes... a business. $15 in labour for an oil change is bullshit unless you're paying you kid to do it.
Wetzeb@reddit
VW/Audi has a weird spec and some of the oil changes can be pricey, but if you are going that route and changing it yourself you should be using FCPEuro for their lifetime guarantee on oil getting free oil changes.
craig_52193@reddit

IntelligentCandy8716@reddit
Don't freak out! This is a service contract so the OP isn't doing the changes themselves. Full retail price for materials plus hourly for time. Also, I see no indication of a limit to only 12 times. If they went with a 3k mile interval, it is a really good deal.
heisenberg2JZ@reddit
That's Walmart. No one beats bulk, not even my employee discount. Go to Costco, it's cheap too. Go anywhere else it's $14 per liter.
Street_Possession954@reddit
Gotta keep in mind that if you are having a shop do your oil change, the oil is marked up same as with any parts etc. so, for instance, a $30 jug of oil would be $40 after a 30% m/u.
your_anecdotes@reddit
if you find the sales and rebates it can be even lower I got pennzoil oil for 24$ for 10qt after rebate
jamesatct@reddit
This may surprise you, but
Dealerships do not buy oil from Walmart
Sev-is-here@reddit
This also strongly depends on the oil and where you get it. For me it’s physically cheaper to not go to Walmart
crayon_consoomer@reddit
No, that's about right for oil where I am
MyNameIsNotLenny@reddit
Keyword - AT WALMART.
Do you think other stores and more importantly shops charge the same amount of money for oil that walmart does?

Mobil one, put it in your engine
DonnerPartyPicnic@reddit
Shit, 10 quarts of supertech synthetic is $40
bmanxx13@reddit

EarthValuable@reddit
Mobile 1 full synthetic 5W-30 is $37 not on sale where I live. Not everyone goes to your Walmart…
ImReallyFuckingHigh@reddit
I mean it’s >$10 more anywhere else but Walmart
akaian97@reddit
Amsoil Signature series cost more than that….
ImReallyFuckingHigh@reddit
Okay
YoungMandingo315@reddit
$70 in labor is not reasonable at all lol. I use to be a Lube tech and a full synthetic oil change for less than 5 quarts was $80 for everything including the inspection. It’s like 15 minutes of labor max. At that rate OP is paying them $280/hour which is ridiculous.
_how_do_i_reddit_@reddit
It also includes "free" tire rotations at each oil change so gotta factor that in too.
Mr_MacGrubber@reddit
Unless you’re buying Amsoil or some other high end brand, full synthetic is usually not $9/qt.
mr_waffle32@reddit
I have a Mazda, the prepaid maintenance also has a tire rotation included with every service, I’m paying for them now and it’s $130 all in with taxes for the service. So seems like the math makes sense, just not saving much if anything.
CharredLions@reddit
The real issue is that you financed $1500 worth of oil changes. Don't do that math on what it comes to after all of your payments.
TeamShonuff@reddit
And that’s probably not just $1500. That’s 1500 FINANCED dollars.
tjdux@reddit
I got $75...
60 months worth of oil changes every 3 months is 20 oil changes over 5 years. 1500÷20=75 per change for synthetic.
I'm assuming the interval section being checked 3 means 3 months.
Longjumping-Ad9269@reddit
He said 1,500$ not 150.
8N-QTTRO@reddit
$1500 for 12 oil changes. That's $125 per change.
rlwarner78@reddit
This plan also covers tire rotations. OP did just fine.
cakes42@reddit
$70 labor for an oil change is insanity.
Aromatic-Scratch3481@reddit
$70 in labor? They're billing a half hour? With a lift I feel like that's a little absurd. 15 min
MrKen2u@reddit
Also includes tire rotations
Ambereggyolks@reddit
He wasn't getting a great deal, definitely paying more than they should but $125 for an oil change is not out of this world.
Definitely could be cheaper but they obviously were not trying to find a deal on what they were paying if they're just looking back a year later.
JustThall@reddit
$125 per oil change at dealer is great price, for Bay Area, California
vibes86@reddit
That’s what I thought. Not too bad.
Lifealertandsquirt@reddit
70 in labor for an oil change, on top of paying for the oil?? You’re wild thinking that’s normal. Her car would have been 56$ after tax at Walmart for a full synthetic oil change that includes up to 5 quarts and a filter. And it wouldn’t be over $60 more elsewhere just cuz “Walmart”.
ja4496@reddit
It also includes, on page 2, tire rotation, inspection, and lube which is another 25$ around me. I know a full “service” at Toyota is $130.00 and at ford is $110.00 so just roll with it honestly and never have to stress about coming up with the money when you need an oil change and putting it off.
hosmtony@reddit
My Sienna uses 0w20, with filter from Amazon is 37 dollars delivered
mechafishy@reddit
It's also good if you're not a car person and the dealer is on the level, getting your car up on a lift where a professional can notice something out of place can save on some major headaches
Frosty-Wishbone-5303@reddit
0-20 oil changes are routinely 75 bucks at valvoline. In and out in 20 min tops. Cheaper if you do it yourself. Paying a premium is the norm at dealers so yeah its overpriced but that is dealerships going rates. I have seen worse. My moms volvo dealer tried to charger her 250 once. My father yelled over the phone tell them to take the oil out lol. Its not terrible if convenient but you can do much better.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
Thank you for the laugh this morning!! Lol I needed that. I’m definitely trying to cancel this. Lesson learned
LopsidedPost9091@reddit
Go back to the dealer and cancel that shit.
rhyno0485@reddit
What does the rest of the contract say? Does it not cover unexpected repairs or is it limited to only maintenance? If it's only for maintenance, the contract is not going to be worth it.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
That’s the extent of the maintenance contract. The other two contracts were separate and don’t get me started….
Southraz1025@reddit

FunctionMental1812@reddit
Yeah the oil is cheaper at Walmart feel free to do it yourself for a better value!

wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
That’s not a bad perspective considering how unpredictable things are right now in the US. Thank you lol

it's a crossover/suv. you probably don't need a jack to do these yourself. likely a 13mm socket and a pan plus your oil/filter.

wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)

Hereforthetardys@reddit
That’s if you buy the oil and filter and change it yourself
A dealership is going to charge you labor - usually about $150 an hour
32steph23@reddit
You’re paying for the oil and the services/labor. Dealer service is typically going to run you more hence the $125 per visit.
On the bright side I doubt they’re charging you for a full hour of labor.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
Worse than this?😭

basb9191@reddit
I mean, I'd be more worried about an attempt at an insult from someone with the imagination, originality, and intelligence of someone who can come up with a better screen name than "YJeezy".
If that's enough unrelated crap for you, let's get back to the subject.
Mazdas aren't luxury vehicles. Oil changes shouldn't cost more in labor than it costs to buy the oil and all the tools needed for the job. If they do, it's poor manufacturer design or a greedy company doing the service. Or both.
32steph23@reddit
So what would be a good price in your book basb?
YJeezy@reddit
You're an insufferable fool. If you cant get the context of my comment, I don't know what to say. From the upvotes, most seemed to have as well as the OP.
$125 oil change by an auto dealer is not outrageous. You will pay more for labor alone from dealerships like Porsche and BMW.
Appreciate your ability to analyze reddit handles lol
I can see you are a very proud Captain Obvious
basb9191@reddit
Context: these companies overcharge for oil changes, so you should be okay with being overcharged by all companies.
Sounds like you work in a shop and want to justify your own company overcharging people.
YJeezy@reddit
No shit captain obvious. They call them stealerships for a reason. That's why you go to a good reasonable independent or DIY.
Nowhere did I condone the high price of dealerships and why on earth would you conclude that I should be ok with being overcharged by all companies? I simply gave the OP context on market rates for a couple premium makes and somehow you accuse me of working for an autoshop??
Seriously, what is wrong with you?

Can I do it myself for the X3 as well? 100%. But then I also wouldn't be able to enjoy a nice lunch and a movie while I wait - my BMW dealer has their own bistro and small movie theater.
The best experience I've ever had at any dealership in the 20 years I've been buying cars.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
They ought to for what it costs lol that’s the premium experience you are getting! When I had my Mazda6, I started going somewhere close to where I get my pedicures and can shop. I can’t just sit there and wait

Yes. Their hourly rate is probably $140-$150 and you’re only paying $125 total. Compared to normal dealer rates I’d say you’re getting a deal as long as you use it.
Now obviously your local mechanic most likely would’ve been cheaper.

Did they give you a deal for signing the service contract? If so, you probably made your money back. If no, it isn’t much money, negotiate better next time.

Where TF do you live? USD!? I can get 5qt of their high end for 32$ no sale

Please, I’m begging you. Don’t take your car to Walmart for an oil change. I knew the district manager for my area personally and that was HIS advice. He wouldn’t take his own vehicles there. You might get a good one every once and a while, but not worth Russian roulette with your car
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
I appreciate the feedback!
TheAsianIsReal@reddit
Where i get my oil changes, it's like 45 bucks, including labor. I did have to like hunt down this shop, though. They are great people, no bs. Cut straight to the point and are an honest family. They do the exact work you ask done. If they see anything more, they'll let you know before you leave, but they won't do the extra work to avoid the extra charge unless you ask them to do it.

"I want people to take care of my car and care for it like their own but I also don't want to spend that much money so I'll go to a cheaper place that pays their employees wages equivalent to McDonald's and expect the same level of service"
$125 for an oil change isn't that bad, especially if he's at a dealership.
don_chuwish@reddit
Dealership oil changes are a pain to schedule. They’re counting on you NOT getting them done at their shop and they already have your money. Why pay them in advance for something they might not even do?
6eyedjoker@reddit
You're buying convenience and peace of mind. I could tell you many horror stories about Jiffy Lube and other such places. Just make an appointment every 5k to get your service done.

These questions are like Groundhog Day here. It's kind of like the oil change questions here. Different day same question over and over and over again. You're supposed to do your homework before you come here asking if you got robbed.

The fine print seems to indicate that tire rotations and multi point inspections are also included in the maintenance services covered. Those things also cost money.
For somebody who doesn't know shit about working on cars, paying $125 every 3 months for somebody to change the most important fluid in your engine, loosen and tighten the most important bolt on your engine, and rotate your tires while they're at it, ain't that bad of a deal.
OttoMod21@reddit
Also consider this: if your engine shits on you for whatever reason, both Mazda and/or your third party warranty provided are almost certainly going to ask for proof of maintenance. If you have invoices from a shop showing regular oil changes done by a professional, it's pretty much open and shut. If you have a handful of receipts from Walmart showing you bought oil, there's a little more ambiguity.
Signed, a former third party automotive warranty claims adjuster.
Odd-Towel-4104@reddit
Cancel it. There's no point in buying oil changes up front
luwig@reddit
I'd just pay for it when I need it, unless the dealership if offering them for free with the lease. There's absolutely no reason to give them the money ahead of time.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
Oh it’s not a lease and to make it worse, I found a review online that someone else thought it could be done at any Mazda , but it’s only this one. Granted, I despise the Mazda dealership in my city, the one I bought my car from is 70 miles away
Wolfica95@reddit
Everyone here is speculating on the pricing. If you bought this from a Mazda dealer go to their service department and ask a service advisor for the breakdown of service costs and if this would cover those. Since you added this to your loan as well I would make extra payments asap to pay that amount off.
Based on verbiage in section 5, they may not even cover the full cost of the service that the dealer charges.
SR70@reddit
It’s pretty clear by reading it that you’ve got oil changes, tire rotation every 5k miles or 5 years. It expires 5years or 60,000 from now. You didn’t include pages 3-6 so there’s possibly more but we cannot see it. So basically 15 “free” oil changes and tire rotations which works out to be $100 per visit to break even. You’ve also probably rolled this into your monthly payment so you’re also paying interest on it. Also if you sell your car sooner or it gets totaled you have lost out on whatever didn’t get used. Lastly, the shop you take it to if it isn’t your selling dealer may not accept this contract or want to bother to call this in for payment as it is a pain in the ass to do so. Source: I was a service advisor for many years.
AmmoESGN@reddit
This man right here is spitting facts! I was a car salesman and I know the tricks and you got ripped bud
AmmoESGN@reddit
Yup gotta read the fine print
ActuallyStark@reddit
Everyone's math here has me baffled. This is EITHER a 60,000 mile contract, meaning 20 changes at $75.. or it runs UNTIL 60k, which means it's 8 changes at $180... Either way, unless you drive a LOT, you're gonna run into the 60 months first.. so BEST case scenario, you're paying $75/change which isn't all that bad to have someone else do it (not GREAT deal) or worst case $200+ which sucks. And KNOW that the dealer is going to "find" everything that's "wrong" with the car EVERY time, and charge you $3500 for a brake job.
That being said, if you can't do your own changes... probably marginally safer than going to a quick lube and having them forget to put.. oh, I dunno.. oil... in the car, or leaving 7/12 screws out of the pan underneath the car which will fly off next winter.
Seeing shit like this is why I do all my own work.
rnepmc@reddit
it says clear as day oil change every 5k miles, a tire rotation and multipoint inspection. your an idiot. and you can cancel these whenever
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
I think you meant You’re * an idiot, but thanks ☺️
pizzaduh@reddit
Don't go to a dealership for an oil change. I got a Groupon for Valvoline and paid $27 for full synthetic and paid the extra $10 for an air filter even without the Groupon, it would've been $64.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
Fair! Thank you
pizzaduh@reddit
Did you get an oil change every month?
West_Biscotti2757@reddit
Looks to be 20 oil changes to me… if the interval is 3… assuming that’s 3k miles… you’ve got 60k miles on the term of the contract… so that would mean an oil change every 3k miles until you hit 60k that YOU hv driven … which would be 60k/3k… which would equal 20 changes
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
The Maintenance Schedule is #3. It is every 5k or 5 months i think
Odd-Conflict-8926@reddit
Start doing your own oil. Takes 20 minutes and saves you more than half of the costs.
Hta68@reddit
Yup you paid too much, 60k term for syn oil. 7k between changes @ 250.00 a pop, we’re at 8.57 oil changes times 250 = $2142 and that’s really high balling it.
DowntownStomach3659@reddit
If this is only for oil changes, then this is very expensive. Since manufacturers recommend oil changes only every 10k miles then you will only be getting 6 oil changes. When you buy new tires, the rotation and balance are typically included in the price. Make sure you can actually get 5k oil changes but I think this is still a really bad deal.
Buc_ees@reddit
Always always always ask what will cost you to do this before you hand over your key.
Sharpness-V-Mustard@reddit
I’m wondering where people are seeing this is only for 12 oil changes. On the paper where it says “maintenance service interval” it has a checkmark on 3, which would presumably mean every 3,000 miles. If that is correct then op would have 20 oil changes under this contract and each one would average out to $74.25.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
The 3 is for the package number on page 2.
Sharpness-V-Mustard@reddit
Oh lord don’t let them scam you like that
compsys1@reddit
Hang on. The cx5 maintenance schedule calls for oil changes every 7500 miles. So, a responsible owner would perform 8 oil changes in 60k miles.
1500/8 = $187. So, yeah, priced little high imo. Never get these add on services.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
Lesson learned. Already emailed a cancellation request
compsys1@reddit
Just be aware that most service centers sell oil changes - they are huge money makers. Almost all will attempt to change the oil early. Not just engine oil - trans, drivetrain, brake fluid whatever.. Check your maintenance schedule - it's listed in there OR some cars have a maintenance indicator (honda) that you're supposed to follow.
Just_-_A_-_Human@reddit
5qt Mobile 1 synthetic is about $30, Fran filter about $10. After tax $45 for all parts. I bring my oil & filter to my mechanic and he charges $25 labor (used to be just $15 a few years back). But $45 + $25 = $70 per oil change. And that's with my choices of oil and filter. Don't get a choice of what is used on/in your car if you just let a shop use their parts (although a dealer should use OEM filter and good oil). But yeah, that's a ripoff. They got you to prepay way too much. When buying a car, buy the car ONLY. Never get any ads ons, they are all scams. Never get extended warranties (if you really want one, you can get one yourself after purchase from another company).

$125 per change sounds right at the dealership level. I hope they're using full synthetic oil.
Flimsy_Wallaby6128@reddit
It's a standard contact. You get an oil change every 3 months regardless of miles since you're covered for 60k miles. You got a deal here. Could be as little as 12 changes, or it could take a lifetime to get to 95k.

Oil change for most cars is the easiest maintenance ever. Google it for your car and save your money for cocaine and hookers (or your kid’s college fund….life choices).
SauceBaucex@reddit
It's not that bad. It also includes 12 tire rotations, which can cost like around 60 - 70 bucks by itself.

You paid up front and missed out on the time value of money for something that you could have paid for as needed. Really for no benefit. I’d avoid doing this sort of thing in the future. It’s posts like this that make me wish my country did more to educate adults on things like this. Like a “Consumer Finance Protection Bureau” ……. Oh, wait.
Bubbly_Positive_339@reddit
My dealer sold me one of these stupid plans and I canceled it within 30 days and got my money back. Didn’t save me any money and I was limited to where I could go.
Sneakytrashpanda@reddit
You could just do it yourself, it’s a Phillips head to move a plastic cover, a ratchet with 8mm hex head for the drain bolt, oil pan, block of some sort and a filter wrench. So 30 bucks in tools, one of which you should already have. Your first oil change will pay for itself.
MAG3x@reddit
Did you?
Lordofthereef@reddit
Whenever oil changes comes up there's always the dude that's like "I can do this in my driveway for $50". And yeah, you we know you could. You're also not paying yourself to do it, nor are you paying yourself to dispose of the used oil and filter. You probably have the tools already (which aren't generally expensive, but you still need them) and you probably have the skill set and space to work on your vehicle.
I just took six quarts in to oreilly. It was free to drop off, but it wasn't free to take there. I wasn't paid to do that. But I still had to. My clumsy ass spilled some in the driveway too, so that took extra time (and money) to clean up properly.
If you ever eat out, grab fast food, pick up a soda at the checkout at the grocery store, etc. you pay for convenience and labor beyond what it would cost you to make/do yourself. That's just the reality of the market. The oil change pricing shared here is pretty on par with market standards.
Ok-Anxiety-6485@reddit
Are you going to a dealer? I ask because my buddies dad used to own a shop and I would pay 35 to 45 for an oil change. They didn't make money on oil changes but it got people in their shop and led to bigger jobs and repeat customers.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
It’s where I bought it, so yes, the dealership
Ok-Anxiety-6485@reddit
Yeah i am not a fan of dealerships because I feel like they always charge way more. Try a reputable mom and pop shop, you may have better luck there.
DaveDL01@reddit
If the cost of an oil change jumps...you are a hero!!!
Bearikade-@reddit
Looks like the cx5 schedule calls for a change every 12 months or every 7500 miles. Personally I do believe full synthetic every 5k is the way to go if you’re planning on keeping the car long term. Personally I don’t go with these oil change packages because I can do it much cheaper myself and I’ll know it was done right. However you do want documentation that it was done right and on time if you gave lots of warranty or extended warranty. Therefore this is probably just a good learning lesson for next time.
Bearikade-@reddit
One of the services a finance manager will usually try to push is a maintenance package with a set amount of oil changes. You’d have to find out the normal cost per oil change at that dealer to compare against that package to see if it saves you money or not. Obviously you could do it yourself cheaper, but I’m assuming you’re going to take it in for oil changes. Also check against the manufacturers maintenance schedule to make sure you’re not over changing. I’m fond of 5k changes on full synthetic personally but everyone has their opinion and different cars need different things.
If that car has a lot of warranty left, or you bought an extended warranty, make sure you do the required oil changes per at least the frequency outlined in the owners manual. Manufacturers and extended warranty companies love to void warranties if they can prove you didn’t do required maintenance.
Furthermore keep in mind that each department tries to profit off of you differently. I’m not familiar with the cx-5 schedule, but for example ford requires a 10k oil change schedule. They’re trying to sell you a car and longer schedules look better. The ford dealer service department pushes 5k oil changes, as they’re trying to sell oil changes. Interestingly the finance manager at the same dealer was trying to push 10k oil changes in his oil change package. He doesn’t care about engine maintenance and wants his package to look as good as possible. Less changes means cheaper package and more likely to sale.
That all said, you may be able to get a prorated refund on the oil change package if you end up regretting it. Read the terms and give them a call.
fjb-2973@reddit
That is robbery. My Cadillac is 79.99 at the dealer. 7 qts, filter, other fluids checked and topped off, brakes and tires inspected and tires rotated
Far-Fortune-8381@reddit
that’s really not that bad. replace it yourself if it’s a problem because that is really quite a low cost for an oil change these days. 125 per change. it could be and is a lot worse in other places
Varunahir@reddit
This is a super expensive oil change plan. Try cancelling it asap. It’s a total waste of
driftybread@reddit
It looks like it comes with air filters and cabin filters too looking at that bottom right paragraph. That would honestly make it a pretty good deal. You get your oil change and tire rotations along with filters, so instead of 125ish for oil changes, it would be like 70-90ish for the oil change plus the cost of filters and labor to install them.
Also, the inspections are a decent touch. Should you have issues while under warranty, they would be likely to catch it and you could get it handled while you have coverage.
Izibella@reddit

BobbbyR6@reddit
You got fleeced for sure. I started writing out what it would cost to do yourself and even with the purchase of a couple tools and filters, you'd have a hard time breaking $600-700 all-in and the time is fairly negligible.
Rather than poke fun at you, I'd like to encourage you to consider tackling the little jobs like changing oil. It's very easy, doesn't require advanced tools or knowledge, and just about anyone can give you a hand if you're unsure about something. You can also probably easily find someone local to you through reddit or similar to give you a hand and walk you through it in exchange for lunch.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
I genuinely appreciate that. I’m here to learn and I usually do so by making mistakes. I do enjoy minor DIYs; definitely gives me a sense of accomplishment so I will see if that is something I can take on.
This is my 3rd Mazda and I love them! I always thought I would stick with a solid black car. Last one was soul red and now this one too. It sure is pretty ☺️
Foolserrand376@reddit
I'd get out of this. the oil change interval on the CX5 is 7.5k with 0w20 synthetic. over the course of 60k miles that's only 8 oil changes. If you are going to go synthetic no need to go every 5k like this contract says they will.
you could probably find a local shop (not a dealer) to do the oil change and tire rotations for $100 and possibly build a relationship such that you have someone you can trust when something goes wrong.

taco_bell_sharts@reddit
This is the best advice. You’re paying $25 a month for this for your entire 60 month loan, even after the coverage runs out.
SR70@reddit
You can cancel these types of contracts if you have not used it yet. I’d call or go in to speak with the Finance manager and tell (don’t ask) them you want to cancel. When they ask why tell them it works out to 100 per visit and you can get it done for less than that price. (Or tell them it’s none of their business, you just want to cancel)
-Houston@reddit
I don’t mind it. It comes with tire rotations, fluid top offs and a car wash. They even send me a video of them testing everything. Worth it to me, I sure ain’t gonna do it myself.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
That’s pretty cool. I feel like most of the time when places say they test everything, they do not. The amount of times my tires were “at spec” and were, in fact, under inflated…

What happens if your car is totaled in 2 months? Can you use the oil changes on another make and model? Is it only good for the car you just purchased?
dannyboysouth83@reddit
No the service contract is for that VIN number only.
adudeguyman@reddit
That is not ideal. It reminds me of when someone leases a car and puts more money down than the minimum. If you put an extra $4000 down to keep your monthly payment low, and then you total the car on the way out of the dealership, that $4000 is just gone and wasted.
dannyboysouth83@reddit
Well yeah depends on what you are willing to risk, can still buy a car in cash and crash right off the lot. Better hope that insurance claim comes in handy, along with GAP.

Fluxx70@reddit
It looks like you bought an extended warranty with oil changes thrown in. A basic extended warranty usually covers drivetrain, engine, transmission, and differentials. Basically anything that takes lubricants. Taking them up on the oil changes is a great way to get value back on the money you spent. Mazdas tend to be pretty reliable, so you aren’t likely to run into the kind of trouble covered under your warranty before 95,000 miles.
too_much_covfefe_man@reddit
That looks like what the price is in my area. I get a synthetic change in my Pontiac at an independent shop and that's what it is for retail. If I have to do it myself, it ain't getting done, and I'm not letting ol Dennis and Clayton at the Valvoline down the road lay hands on it
XxblacklightninjaxX@reddit

This is a big yikes if its oil changes only. There is no planet in this solar system where it is a good deal. For synthetic oil you should be getting a good 10,000 miles interval. You should also be doing it yourself on a SUV IMO . refund this ASAP if possible.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
I was thinking that too. My Mazda 6 was every 7,500. So them doing it every 5k was strange. I’m definitely no mechanic but I am going to look into how easy it for be for the CX-5. You have me thinking I can do anything😂

Well this is awkward I just saw the second page and edited :D

I don’t think it’s a bad price to pay for a bit extra peace of mind. Some smart ass will probably mention the Magnusson moss act - but if you have a warranty claim and the dealership is where you primarily (and promptly) bring your car for service they will be a lot less likely to give you grief for it… Sometimes they will be more keen to help you.
FWIW - a Subaru oil change (6.x quarts) with tire rotation and multi point inspection is 100~110 through the dealer.
Fokewe@reddit
You pre-paid for and oil change, tire rotation and inspection every 5 months or 5000 miles.
The raw numbers are in your favor until you factor in interest on the $1495 over the life of the loan.
Be sure to factor in getting the oil and filter, doing the job, recycling the oil. So, there are really 2 questions on the table. Are you handy and can do all of these things? What's your time worth?
Personally, I wouldn't do it but if I lived in an apartment/condo. I'd really consider it.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
I’m not handy and definitely cannot do it myself. I’d be taking it somewhere anyway. I have a house and while I do love learning to do things so i don’t have to pay someone else to, I try to limit that to my nails 💅🏽

This also has the Basic box checked at the top of the pic. Basic is likely a Powertrain Warranty. If you paid $1500 for both the maint plan (12 LOF and tire rotations) and the powertrain warranty, it’s not a bad deal. The maint makes up the a significant portion and you’ll want those receipts if you need to use that pwrt warranty.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
This is just the maintenance lol. He told me about all the features but the contracts were separate for the maintenance and bumper to bumper

$125 for a full synthetic oil change + new oil filter, fluids, air filters and tire rotations is not a terrible price. I would say its probably pretty average from a cost standpoint.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
It doesn’t include the other filters. That’s a different package. However, I can do the engine and cabin filter myself. Thanks, Youtube
sfbiker999@reddit
Those service contracts are almost never a good deal, but usually not a terrible deal either. My wife likes having the contract -- she likes knowing that she's not going to pay for any routine service for 5 years.
If you can change the oil yourself, or have a good, reasonably priced mechanic, you're going to spend more money on the service contract than on the oil changes, but if you'd have gone to the dealer anyway, you usually break even.
wellthisisawkward86@reddit (OP)
I definitely wouldn’t have gone to the dealer lol I’m usually a stickler about deals but this one got over on me , I think. I did like the not having to pay for 5 years but not at a markup and financed.
King_of_the_Irish@reddit
1500 is a full scam. They had to off service other things too to get that price. Oil changes are easy to do. You can do it yourself, to be honest.

Free oil changes for life 🔥 Thanks Honda

some things in life arent worth losing sleep. whether you paid 25 bucks more than someone else who is savvy about buying the bottom... who cares? the amount of time required to fight for the bottom just isnt worth it.
KenJyi30@reddit
Think the dealer does a certain amount of checks on others maintenance items (not necessarily fixing) but at least it will be looked at, which I’ve never gotten at any place that does just oil changes, so there’s that bit of value.
Stohnghost@reddit
$125 is definitely on the high side as others said. I pay about $70 for my Prius which only gets changed twice a year. I pay about $100 for my Outback which gets way more oil changes because it has a turbo and oil is cheap insurance and about $110 for my motorcycle every 3 months. Motorcycle labor is by far the most expensive.
I don't think you got hosed. Now you have incentive to never miss an oil change. You could have come out better by haggling this contract or using coupons.

While my truck was under warranty I paid $300/oil change. 12 qt of diesel oil ain’t cheap at the dealer. But they did find a few issues they covered along the way.
But now I do them it’s $100.
What I’m saying is you can kinda see it as an extra insurance policy.
KingPhilip01@reddit
It’s a little on the high side, I pay about $100 for my girlfriend’s civic, 5 quarts full syn at a local lube shop. Also a relatively low cost of living area though.
fuelvolts@reddit
That's not cheap, but you're not getting completely hosed, as long as you actually use the benefit. You paid retail price. No need to pay for oil changes/tire rotations for 5 years or 60k miles.
Kostelnik@reddit
Looks like it, yeah. Oil change, tire rotation and inspection every 5 month/ 5k miles until 2/19/20 or 95k miles.
