Wanting to re-enter the automotive scene in 1992, Swiss carmaker Monteverdi sought to create a road legal supercar built around their own F1 chassis and engine. The Monteverdi Hai 650 F1 was created as the successor to the Hai 450 SS from 1970. Only 3 prototypes were made from 1992 to 1995.

Wouldn't a road legal car need a speedo?

"No officer I do not know how fast I was going"
tetzy@reddit
The 650 F1 never made it past the prototype stage - the entire interior is unfinished.
DocHooves94@reddit
I will take one in the purple 😍
The_Nabisco_Thing@reddit (OP)
The purple is my favorite too!!

„Hai“ means shark in German, which would explain the fender design with the little shark fins.

That looks stunning to me! Quite a tumeless beauty although you can tell it was made in the 90ies.
But especially the rear end looks quite modern! Love it
WhiteHeteroMale@reddit
I particularly love the rear also.
saliczar@reddit
I also love the rear, and I cannot lie.

These other car lovers can’t deny
s6cedar@reddit
I would also like to express my fondness for that particular area

A man of culture I see.

Exterior holds up well, would look very modern with just a headlight update to LEDs. Interior looks spartan but I think that's the point, but again just with an update to a digital dash and a newer steering wheel this could easily pass for present-day, with the exception of the old-style carbon weave pattern
-TheExtraMile-@reddit
I couldn´t agree more, a modern LED design at the front and maybe a few small touches here and there and it would pass for a modern design.
The interior is another story haha
SeaUnderstanding1578@reddit
The badge lettering in the back reminds me a lot of SALEEN
Cunt_Eastwood_10@reddit
You know it’s intense when the tach is de-emphasized below 7k.
invisibo@reddit
Automotive equivalent of not showing prices on a menu. “If you need to be concerned about those numbers, you’re in the wrong place”
MrAngryBeards@reddit
Really? Nobody said anything about the shifter knob? Sick car but that thing looks so silly lol
mp5tyle@reddit
These are the pictures of the prototypes.. interior was never finished if you can't tell from just a slap of metal for the dash..
MrAngryBeards@reddit
guess I couldn't tell. Still the stick knob looks funny to me, whatever stage of prototyping this is
BonezOz@reddit
That car gives off some serious NSX vibes, or maybe it's the other way around.
SubcommanderMarcos@reddit
Sleeker F50 was my train of thought
JerseyDevl@reddit
I'm getting strong Jaguar XJ220 vibes from the overall shape and side vents, slight Koenigsegg cc8s looks from the front end, and the rear kind of looks like an NSX a bit
The_Mammoth_Hunter@reddit
I was thinking more Jaguar XJR-15
BonezOz@reddit
Maybe the front end, but the cabin and the tail scream NSX
kielu@reddit
That was my favorite matchbox
Soggy_Cheek_2653@reddit
14k rpm redline with no insulation from the engine? Respectfully, no one would drive this glorious mess on the road.
SlicerShanks@reddit
That is most certainly a Ford HB in the back, derived from the Cosworth DFV
muzzawell@reddit
Ford DFR 3.5L V8 according to Wikipedia. Good call though 👍
FWBenthusiast@reddit
You can really see the F1 heritage with the motor visible in the rear glass and the cooling in the sidepod cutouts. Perfect 90s supercar
CauliflowerOk777@reddit
It looks like a preproduction Mosler MT900S
poo-cum@reddit
Wowzer. I kinda miss when hypercars were just carbon buckets, engines, and bare essentials. There's a spartan beauty to it. No leather, no bullshit, just function.
NJNeal17@reddit
Reminds me of the Saleen S7
iamseventwelve@reddit
Yep, this is a like if the XJ220 and Saleen S7 had a baby.
NJNeal17@reddit
I had a Honda that bc of the rear camera being integrated into the rear view mirror via the windshield driving the cost of a windshield up to $1400 and this was just before COVID! I can only imagine the price of the glass on that car 🤑 😂
OgdenDermstead@reddit
And to think, the same company "made" the Safari.
NocturnalPermission@reddit
When an XJ220 and a 959 hook up.
delicate10drills@reddit
Jeeeeez. That’s some well thought out styling. Too bad they couldn’t design it to be manufacturable as an NSX competitor.
SuperHeavyHydrogen@reddit
Seeing those injectors pointing straight down into the intake trumpets. Perfect.

If an F40 and an XJR-15 had a baby, this would be it.
Gnarcade@reddit
This would be a good set to crosspost to /r/thewholecar.
AshyLarryX@reddit
If the headlights were shaped a bit differently and enlarged a tad, it would be perfect

The Group-C style dashboard is wild

This is the first car I've seen that reminds me of one of my all-time favorites, the Jaguar XJ220. Nice post! Thanks for this.

Does pic 11 show a 2x4 behind the seat? Beautiful car
Denboogie@reddit
Anyone remember the hidden car in Need for Speed 2? The FZR2000 it looked pretty similar from what I remember.

I have a mighty need

this is surprisingly cool---also, the picture with the surprised cyclist looks like it should be a sega genesis game cover or something
