We have a Constitution and as crazy as it
sounds to some, a president is not allowed to take military action without congressional approval. Its very explicit.
However Congress gave away these powers and we now are at the whim of a single man putting us at war. The legal justification Biden and Trump use to bomb Yemen is basically 9 fucking 11 and the powers Congress gave the president.
I agree it’s a slippery slope. The system we had in place was given away a million times over, bit by bit. Most time done by good people trying to do good things.
Now presidents can implement tariffs, go to war, suspend rights, deport without due process, order torture, jail people and many other things that would be shocking not only to the Founders, but to previous generations of Americans. Thats a whole lot of power given to one person.
If notTrump seizing authoritarian power it would be someone else. System is broken in a million ways. Maybe after Tump all this is done by a leftist who consolidates even more power.
Im personally not optimistic it gets fixed. But doesn’t make it right and we are loving in a deformed system that no longer protects the rights of the people.
Yeah I agree the amount of power that's been consolidated into the presidency is concerning. It's just that these strikes in particular seem pretty in line with what the founders wanted.
Not all of us want to live under the thumb of a king sending us to kill and be killed based on his sole discretion.
We had a well balanced Constitution and the checks and balances in place are to control an out of control president. We want to ensure the Natural Rights of the people were not infringed. Just because a past Congress gave away those powers doesn’t make it Right, Moral, or Just.
The reason we dont have a King is we traditionally believe that no one man should hold such power over the governed.
And just because societal members say they are ok with draconian forms of government that infringe on our individual rights doesn’t mean they are correct. My fellow citizens do not have the right to cede my rights away.
The attacks are only happening due to us funding Israels mass murder campaign in Gaza. If we stop supporting Israel, the war stops (Israel can’t do it without us) then the Houthis stop their attacks
Couldn't he team with the Democrats and hope a few GOP(even one or two) defect to his thought process to limit the War Powers Act? That is assuming all the Democrats vote against Trump in this instance
Both major parties are pro-war when it suits them. Arguing that the Democrats did/do something doesn't give the Republicans a pass, any more than arguing that since the Republicans did/do something gives the Democrats a pass.

Except that Houthis attacking ships increases shipping costs for Americans…

Well Vance did say in those leaked texts that he doesn’t want to bomb the Houthis when the only outcome is helping Europe yet again.
txeagle24@reddit
And then immediately gave in when Hegseth fired back that he'd prefer to do it now. For a minute I thought Vance had principals.

Why would the Dems vote against this?
HotTamaleOllie@reddit
Democrats are not America first. They’re actually the pro war party now.
