To be even more fair, what qualifies as a “kid” has changed wildly over the centuries. We infantilize children much longer than we used to.
There was a time when a 12-year-old was already working the farm and taking care of things that would be considered “adult” responsibilities today. And it wasn’t uncommon at all for a young person to be married off when they were 13-15 years old. Especially girls.
In England, for example, the law was changed in 1823 so boys could marry at 14 and girls at 12.
In many cultures of the past, a girl was considered ready for marriage after her first period (menarche).
In Islam it’s said that Mohammed married Aisha when she was only 6, but didn’t consummate the marriage until she was 9.
I know kids in china still get abducted and sold off to rural villages so the buyer can have a wife. Happened to my coworker's cousin. She was found 30 years later but she had died after having 6 kids and husband beat her for only having girls.
Why rural villages is because a lot of the families moved into cities and left the villages with less people. Also Chinese having the culture of boys first and abandoning females or selling them off to other families. Rural villages became a sinkhole with disproportionate male to female ratios.
Not that I have a horse in the race for this conversation, but it is worth mentioning that humans' average lifespan at that time was so low because infant mortality rates were high. People were living well into their 70s if they made it to adulthood. (They just didn't because medicine was ass)
My great-grandmother had her first 3 children die in infancy before she had my grandfather, and this was in the late 1940s. Could only imagine how bad it would've been 100+ years before that
I cannot imagine how we survived 20000 years past, like there was nothing, maybe some wall painting but that is it, the mother would probably have to eat her own dirty placenta that had been on the jungle floor full of bacteria and mold. Wield that we made it with such fragile babies, imagine the MF crying right when a pack of hyenas were close by to devour you, just through that little MF to them and make a new one I guess.
It wasn't until recent modern history that we have been able to counter nature in such a way that essentially our only threat to, not just survival but thriving, is ourselves.
The last frontier is fighting infectious disease and aging itself.
While that is partly true, you're wrong that everyone was fucking kids.
In most societies people were acutely aware that birthing a child should be done after a woman was fully developed which is why even if they married young, they were encouraged to only have children at around 20
Report does not necessarily mean first hand accounts that they saw in 1911-22. They likely mean that the report (as in a story the reporter was told) was from 1911-22 but homosexuality had occurred before colonial times.

When the average lifespan was 35, 12 was not a child. His ass would be outside in the fields.

Yeah In some cultures children often wouldn't get named until after a few weeks or months, simply because some would die before they got that far.

Humans usually live in groups of 150 people so it wasn't like everyone was on their own. People have always had a lot of help.
