Every year its a roll of the dice who gets hit with serious damage, be weather aware.

This map leads me to be believe God hates Indiana.
britskates@reddit
I mean respectfully, I think anyone with an ounce of heat and soul shares the same sentiment
Cyliciana@reddit
Born and raised here. Hate it here. Southern Indiana specifically is the worst. There is no escape.
inchling_prince@reddit
I hated every second I spent in Indiana, so yes, I concur.
Marie_Hutton@reddit
Same
Radiatethe88@reddit
Red states. Meh
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
I got lost in the corn there a few times!
TendstobeRight85@reddit
Just as a learning point here. The only state with regions in the pink area that will be most effected by this storm, that DIDNT vote to get rid of FEMA and NOAA, is Illinois.
Sunnyjim333@reddit
A voice of reason in the wilderness.
TendstobeRight85@reddit
And their property values will plummet even further. Honestly, at this point, I have zero pity when I see the sob stories of these people being left out in the cold. They did it to themselves.
Zealousideal_Fall_13@reddit
people like you who generalize a group who are “left out in the cold” are terrible. i didn’t vote for shit and i’ve been “left in the cold” as well.
Ddog78@reddit
If you didn't vote, you don't matter do you?
TendstobeRight85@reddit
Not making a choice, is in and of itself a choice. Hopefully you learnt from the experience, and adjusted your actions accordingly.
Sunnyjim333@reddit
Appalachia is not known for its affluence. Many are very very poor people, most probably could not afford insurance. This is the end of their lifestyles. A zero interest loan from FEMA would go a long way.
It's not like the millionaires on the coast that live in the path of hurricanes every year and need rebuilt on a regular basis. A hurricane in Appalachia is a singularity, for now, maybe there are more to come.
TendstobeRight85@reddit
Yup, and they voted to let themselves be abandoned. Stupid hurts. Im sure once they have been evicted, some uber wealthy will start developing summer homes in the area.
Sunnyjim333@reddit
Boot strap time for sure.
asmodeuskraemer@reddit
A coworker who lives in TN told me that when they got flooded, the national guard was there and didn't do anything. He said the guard said they weren't allowed to, like the government wouldn't let them. I asked why the government wouldn't let them but no one had an answer. I'm hoping someone does, cause that's sus as hell to me.
So, this will be interesting.
hallelujasuzanne@reddit
Biden offered federal emergency assistance to Bill Lee 3 days before Helene destroyed Erwin and he refused then did absolutely nothing until 5 days after the floods. They’re still fishing dead Mexicans out of the Little Pigeon.
I hate it here.
National_Spirit2801@reddit
Well, if climate change is real (it is I'm just giving the deniers something to chew on) weather like this is about to get absolutely fucking biblical, likely during Trump's term. So this will be an interesting turning point for the surviving voters in red states.
Autocannibal-Horse@reddit
Same happened in most of NJ after Sandy under Republican Governor Christy.
LongjumpingDebt4154@reddit
Yea, but those IL counties did.
SmooveKJ@reddit
They will have the week they deserve
year_39@reddit
To people wishing harm on those of us in the hazard zone, remember that large numbers of people didn't vote for Trump. As far as those who did, I don't know how to explain to you that you should care about other people.
National_Spirit2801@reddit
Well, I'm not wishing harm on y'all, but also this fucking idiot president told us to rake the forest and we wouldn't have wildfires (Cali). So, thoughts and prayers I guess - maybe it will be a wakeup call for those who did vote for this admin.
elziion@reddit
And they are starting the process to dismantle FEMA this week.
National_Spirit2801@reddit
Well these areas were overwhelmingly in favor of DJT as the candidate, so they definitely agree with ending FEMA.
Joe_Exotics_Jacket@reddit
They are taking public comments now for the future of that agency. I think they do necessary work.

jar1967@reddit
The National Weather Service is losing 25% of its employees , expect forecasts to become less accurate and less warning time.
Verryfastdoggo@reddit
Pretty sure Ai is going to take that job soon as well anyways.
“The tool is not only generating more accurate weather predictions but also requires a lot less computational power. Making 10-day forecasts with GraphCast takes less than a minute compared to the hours needed when using a conventional HRES approach, which uses a supercomputer with hundreds of machines.”
https://www.climateforesight.eu/articles/reacting-to-the-ai-revolution-in-weather-forecasting/
-rwsr-xr-x@reddit
It sounds like its time to mobilize decentralized, crowdsourced weather reporting via LORA mesh nodes.
There are plenty of visible nodes and tens of thousands of hidden nodes in the voids that can continue to transmit messages around.
manateemilitia@reddit
Less centralized but APRS weather stations via amateur radio are very numerous with more ubiquitous coverage (and pretty easy to receive without a license). Weather data itself isn't hard to come by in a decentralized fashion, but reliable prediction modeling is the problem I keep bumping up against.
SpaceCptWinters@reddit
Thanks for sharing this. I had started to research something similar to this for radio, I believe but can't remember the name of it
jawknee530i@reddit
Been an explicit plan of the right to dismantle and privatize it for a while. The asshole that owns weather.com doesn't want weather data available for free so people have to pay him for it.
Cheap_Collar2419@reddit
These folks voted for it. Hope they get what they voted for. Or, don’t get.
bsmith567070@reddit
I certainly didn’t fucking vote for this… but living in a gerrymandered state, my vote doesn’t count anyway lmao
Livid_Advertising_56@reddit
Well then we hope your house (and anyone else who didn't vote for him) are the only houses left standing

Expect this country to start looking like a third world country real soon...
bobbymcpresscot@reddit
he told these people that he doesn't feel its the federal government's responsibility to handle natural disasters, and is leaving it up to the states.
I feel like I just have a fundamental misunderstanding of what government is and isn't supposed to do.
Smooth-Reason-6616@reddit
So it's not the government responsibility to have an agency that can coordinate emergency responses from and to various states during a natural disaster...
Well, that's going to work out well...
JimiDarkMoon@reddit
The guy from The Apprentice is screwing up how the Government functions? How, aren’t rich people successful at everything? Who could have seen this coming?

Because every event happening in the US is the fault of the past government. See California fires. And the actual government is heavily defunding government agencies. Fact.

We're in Michigan, so tornados are typically a late summer/early fall thing for us. We were not prepared. Didn't check the weather before starting an 8 hour drive home from Tennessee, so we had no idea what was coming until a tornado watch pinged in northern Indiana.
The sirens went off right as we got in the door a couple hours later. Two tornados touched down in our area. I think our roof is damaged, but we're ok. I'm shaken up. Neighbors are reporting mostly downed trees and power lines. Nothing major so far.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
Tornado missed 2 of my family by just miles in between them. It'll be morning before we see damage, but seeing that on radar...and realizing it's so close is just, unease.
chocolatepop@reddit
When deaths become increasingly common because of worse forecasts, warnings, emergency response, building codes, shelters, and increased tornados due to unchecked global warming, remember that the billionaires did this to us and they do not care. Anyone who is participating in the current dismantling of the federal government will have American blood on their hands.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has a great website. It’s where most of the other weather sites get their info from anyway.
https://www.spc.noaa.gov
https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html
-rwsr-xr-x@reddit
Where are we all heading for continued weather reporting and alerting when NOAA has these services permanently shut down?
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
I mean, if the area is broad enough, with millions of people at serious risk of harm I would argue for alerts on here just to be forewarned of "uhh hey this is coming and it looks serious" The last time I spread word about a coming heatwave and got AC units set up for elderly. They ended up having all their other 80+ year old friends spend a lot of the heatwave at the house I installed the units in. Was kinda funny how it happened, but kinda sad it had that much impact preparing like that, turn a terrible time into a party.
Critical-Art-6231@reddit
Youtubers lol...
-rwsr-xr-x@reddit
YouTube wasn't mentioned at all in the article. Perhaps you replied to the wrong comment?
hillbilly-man@reddit
I think they were answering the question "where are we going for weather reporting?". Lots of people I know turn to YouTubers before they turn to any kind of "official" sources already.
OkStill9918@reddit
Weird, that article is from March 4th and NOAA is still around.
bsmith567070@reddit
Are you aware that NOAA was forced to lay off 20% of their staff? Obviously they’re still around… it would take an act of congress to abolish them. But, there’s no denying that unnecessary cuts have had an unquestionable impact so far.
There have already been WFOs that are now unable to take the 12 hour atmospheric sounds due to staffing shortages. That data is absolutely crucial for the weather models to ensure accurate forecasts. Expect to see degraded forecasting in the near future.
Not to mention the brain drain we will be experiencing in the coming years with all of the probationary employees let go. All around a mega shitty situation for the weather service that is the envy of most countries.
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/08/climate/noaa-layoffs-trump.html
bsmith567070@reddit
Short answer… we’re fucked. No one, at least in the U.S., has the equipment that NOAA does to take accurate weather observations. Radiosondes, mesonets, and satellites are all crucial for gathering the data required by the forecast models. The private sector cannot possibly fill the role of NOAA
wanderingpeddlar@reddit

Max Velocity
Ryan Hall, Y'all
These two are amazing meteorologists. Great live coverage of radar and storm chasers when SHTF. If you are in tornado prone areas, I would recommend subscribing.
701_PUMPER@reddit
I love both these guys, I actually switch back and forth so I can help support both haha
ExcitedMonkeyBrains@reddit
They're live right now
701_PUMPER@reddit
Yep, I was watching Max last night and got Ryan on right now. Every hurricane season I’m pretty much glued to these guys
Aggressive_Let2085@reddit
Just for clarification, Ryan isn’t a meteorologist, he’s a weather enthusiast but has no formal education (which is fine, he’s very knowledgeable of the weather but he isn’t a degreed meteorologist). Max is graduating in meteorology soon though.
ExcitedMonkeyBrains@reddit
Fair point. From watching Ryan Hall for almost three years now, I would personally call him a meteorologist. But I'm just some guy 😆. He does a better job than the network tv avaliable to me. So I've donated for his time and expertise
Max is my boy🤘 I've donated money to him for his future success and help that he delivers.
Both are phenomenal sources to the public
StrawberryRedneck@reddit
Andy is a meteorologist, though! So Ryan has his bases well covered usually ☺️
ExcitedMonkeyBrains@reddit
It was so awesome he still did his broadcasts while going to school. Dude had to be wicked tired, but still was there for the people. Admirable and awesome
Aggressive_Let2085@reddit
Hey I’m with you there! Ryan (well, Andy) is the reason I got to a shelter before a tornado hit my town last year. I have max and Ryan on whenever they are live and will do again today for sure. I love max, and cheese curd lol.
ExcitedMonkeyBrains@reddit
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
I mean... some hobbyists that genuinely love what they do... IMO are wayyy more invested in the subject than someone that isn't. I've learned never underestimate a hobbyist.
Aggressive_Let2085@reddit
I can agree with that. I’m just being anal about terminology lol.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
lol, ahh... that line that blurrs in qualifications. Reminds me of a university professor I had, made me seriously wonder how they got in the position they were in.
Teacupcosplay@reddit
Max's 15 hr livestream a couple weekends ago was what helped me warn my family member in Alabama that three tornadoes were under an hour (one a mere 30 minutes away) from her home and to be prepared to leave immediately if another one dropped. He's a lifesaver and a saint
ExcitedMonkeyBrains@reddit
He told me to get to my safe place before the National Weather Service sent out a warning and my town sirens went off. It's wild how accurate and ready he is.
north_coast_nomad@reddit
any suggestions for reporters on the west coast?
ExcitedMonkeyBrains@reddit
They do the United States. They covered the fires, mudslides, and the tornado from a couple weeks ago. They do every part that's going to get hit. Check em out.

Year of the snake lots of extreme weather is going to happen. Most of it man made. The earthquakes in Tailand happened 1028 days after that scripted activist on the tennis court. Which is a sign chaos is going to ramp up. We just started the Antichrist reign and 11 is the # of the AC. A few examples, the Cyber truck explosion on 1/1 you have the 11. Then the LA fires on 1/11. 9/11 9+1+1=11. The Twin Towers went down at 10:28am

Don't worry. Soon, we won't be able to predict bad weather. It will be outlawed to monitor weather and illegal to help anyone when it does hurt people.
Remember: "If we stop testing right now, we'd have very few cases, if any," Trump asserted.
bougdaddy@reddit
so are they rounding up or down with the number of people that will be affected? and also is a storm less dangerous if it affects fewer people? is the number of people supposedly about to be affected really an important part of the weather advisory, or is the number really just click bait?
Pea-and-Pen@reddit
During the last bout of severe storms our town was hit by a tornado for the first time in my 51 years. Prior to that they always veered off right before entering town. So everyone here became complacent saying that the “old Indian curse/blessing” would keep us safe. We were very lucky as minimal damage occurred on the other end of town. No deaths and no buildings/homes were completely destroyed. Everyone will be a little more cautious this go around I hope.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
Complacency kills. The "it won't happen to me" .... yeah.... just, keep your eyes open and have a plan. The devastating weather videos you see online or even the history channel... were people like this that were blind sided. Survivorship bias also plays into it a bit.
