Fiat Panda Pop. Get the 1.2 4 cylinder engine - they're cheaper to service than the 0.8l TwinAir, and more economical too. My kids have one each. Insurance for the child with me as a named driver is £400 (20 year old female policyholder, 2yrs' experience) and £900 (18 year old male policyholder, 0yrs' experience)

An early 2000s Toyota Corolla without a 2nd doubt. It hits all of those points, plus it has legendary reliability.

I'd say Japanese or Korean by and large make the most reliable cars

Girlfriends old KIA Picanto was very reliable, but just very basic and uncomfortable.

High mileage CLA 220d wagon. I put 200,000k miles on mine and only had a lightbulb pop.

I’d go for a Ford Fiesta (Mk6 or early Mk7, 2008-2013) with a 1.25L or 1.4L petrol engine.

I’d get a Hyundai i10, as I’ve owned one before and they’re pretty simple and reliable

What's the insurance like on the i10?

As in 1st gen? Incredibly useful and versatile car. I don't know if later models had the same great space features.

Smart ForTwo model 451 coupe. Mid engined, rear wheel drive, super economical, cheapest band of road tax and fun to drive once you get used to the slow automated gearbox

Suzuki Swift, Grand Vitara, or Alto.

Mazda 3 takuya. Heated seats, dual zone climate control. Automatic wipers, automatic lights, electric mirrors and windows, BT radio, parking sensor and more. Cheap to insure, cheap to drive, cheap to maintain.

blainy-o@reddit

The same as what I've already got, a late first gen Mazda3. Ideally another 2.0 Sport with the 6 speed box. Either that or a Toyota Auris (or Corolla as it should be called/was in other markets).

Not if I gave her money lol. Seriously though she's 73 and finding driving more and more stressful with her reaction time slowing.

VW UP! They are suprisingly fun to drive, you can get them with a/c bluetooth and heated seats, and tax is very cheap if you get one that's from before 2017.

How far will you be driving and do you have off street parking? I'd be tempted by an older Leaf or Zoe
View on Reddit #52514434

runitbymeonce@reddit (OP)

Off street parking - commuting 60-70miles round trip , 2-3 x a week

So that would probably be at the upper end of the range on the ones you could get for that price, probably not doable unless you like living on the edge!

I briefly had an Euro6 3 cyl petrol Citroen C3. It cost me 2500. It was also easy to sell, sold for 2750 within 2 weeks. I had to buy a new battery and was due service, more or less got my money back.
