Did you have a Starter jacket in the late 80’s? If so what year did you get one and which team was it?

All my friends got their starter jackets in 1987 when I was in third grade. My brother and I waited an extra year and got ours in 1988. He got the Oakland A’s and I got the San Francisco Giants. I remember it being such a big deal to us and I know they were probably $100 each at the time or something like that.
Naive-Direction1351@reddit
Everyone had a starter jacket even if yku didnt ask for one. I had a hornets one didnt like them and i had a jacksonville one even tho im a jets fan. I think my mom got them for cheap bc jacksonville was a new team
an0m1n0us@reddit
early 90s, San Diego Chargers. Still have it.
JJP3641@reddit
I think I had a Georgetown or something. IDK we just picked the colors we liked. Think i got mine in like 94
OkPie8905@reddit
Pheonix suns. Cause Barkley was hilarious. Didn’t care that I was a white ass farm kid wearing an orange and purple coat. It was warm
geekgirlwww@reddit
We found photos of my Dad wearing his and cleaning up snow from the blizzards we got back then. He said “I remember I was actually warm and dry it was actually worth the money”
I’m in Nj and I can tell you the snow amount differences are alarming from then and now
TheJokersWild53@reddit
I still remember 1993 - 1996 had the craziest snow storms. And I was a new driver who had a job delivering pizza in a Geo Metro. Fun times, but it taught me to handle a car in the snow
geekgirlwww@reddit
Yes it was fucking wild. I’m 85 so it’s some of my best memories.
We did go to a big hill to sled and a neighbor knocked his front teeth out with a snowboard but had braces so they didn’t get lost!
OkPie8905@reddit
Ya, People do not appreciate the sheer volume of snow we used to deal with as a normal course of winter any more. Snow forts and getting soaked were expected.
Bonus feature of the coat: Bus driver never missed me in a snowstorm
geekgirlwww@reddit
Oh man I remember once the snow had been so crazy we had a week off school. I lived at the near end of a dead end street so the plow had to pile the snow crazy high and we were sledding for 3 days straight. With occasional breaks from the neighbors mom yelling at us to come in and drink hot chocolate to warm up. Then we’d watch MTV with his older sisters and brother.
OkPie8905@reddit
I love it when the city says fuck it we give up and we get to stay home at winter. Even the busses with chains ain’t fighting that barrage. I lived in Portland Oregon in 2018 during an inch of snow that shit everything down and still went to work. Boss asked why and I said as a Canadian if I don’t do donuts in this I lose my passport
DaddyHEARTDiaper@reddit
My family bought me a cheap one, not one of the big puffy ones the cool kids wore. It was worse than not having one but I didn't have the heart to tell them.
holleefackbud@reddit
I had a bulls full zip starter jacket that I still have and still sort of fits so it must have been absolutely massive on me in grade 5- and I had a leafs pullover starter jacket
General-Carob-6087@reddit
I had a Buffalo Bills jacket from some time in elementary school up until I moved away to college. It was huge on me in elementary school so I could actually still wear it in high school but never did. Dug it out of the closet once to wear and discovered it had a huge neon green stain on one of the sleeves.
Seven22am@reddit
No NBA team near me so it was the Bulls.
hanshotfirst2233@reddit (OP)
I was in the Bay Area in California and lots of people had Bulls jackets as well. It’s like Steph Curry jerseys these days. Kids everywhere have them.
FlyDifficult6358@reddit
I wanted a Jordan jersey and I got a Rodman one instead.
FlyDifficult6358@reddit
I wanted a Cleveland Browns starter jacket in the worse way. I got a Golden State Warriors jacket and my brother got a Toronto Raptors jacket lol. Neither one of us are big into basketball. In hindsight I would've loved the Hornets jacket.
TheRealDoomsong@reddit
Charlotte Hornets
goosejail@reddit
My husband had the same. I asked him why, and he said they just had a cool logo.
TheRealDoomsong@reddit
In his defense, he’s correct lol
Adventurous_Pay_5994@reddit
I had that one too. I live in ontario. To this day I have no idea where my mom got it, but there were others in the school with the same one. It's like there was a surplus and shipped them somewhere for cheap.
DamperBritches@reddit
There were an expansion (or renamed) team. The new teams were always trendy at the time. Marlins, Rockies, Hornets, Raptors, Jaguars, Panthers
Conscious-Intern8594@reddit
They used to be the New Orleans Hornets.
gooch_norris_@reddit
They were the charlotte hornets first. The original hornets moved to New Orleans and eventually changed their name to the pelicans. When that happened the later expansion team charlotte bobcats changed their name to hornets
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_Hornets
I don’t really follow basketball but I think team relocations and brands are so fascinating
geekgirlwww@reddit
My dad had the Panthers one but because he decided to learn football for my mom, he wanted to root for a new team since he was new to the sport.
Is anyone else shocked that they haven’t done like a re-release
Haisha4sale@reddit
For some reason, living in California, I had that one too.
drowevil2@reddit
Same and I lived in New Mexico.
Rpd840@reddit
I got one in 93. I don’t remember seeing them earlier than 91 so you were definitely an early trendsetter.
hanshotfirst2233@reddit (OP)
I grew up in the bay area in California. It seems from other comments it didn’t make its way into the Midwest until the 90s.
Intelligent-Stage165@reddit
Copycat brand, Orlando Magic when Shaq and Penny were a thing.
sabo81@reddit
I(44) had a Georgetown Hoyas jacket and my cousin(45) had a Michigan Wolverines jacket. Unfortunately I can't remember what year we got them.
Rude_Mulberry_1155@reddit
I feel like the Starter jacket trend hit the Midwest a little later, maybe mid-90s? I remember bargaining with my parents for an off-brand University of Michigan coat. (I am not from Michigan, nor did I care at all about Michigan sports teams.) I bought an XL, as was the style at the time, even though I was probably around 100 pounds. My mom still has it and wears it on winter walks. She swears it's the warmest coat anyone in our family has ever owned.
kg51113@reddit
This tracks for me. I grew up in the Midwest. Mid-late 90s was high school and just after for me. That's when these were popular. I had whatever brand was being sold at a nearby store.
mecha_toddzilla80@reddit
Dallas Cowboys. I had the Jimmie Johnson version that was black with grey shoulders and a bunch of blue trim.
Pipers_Daddy@reddit
1989 New York Mets
parlayandsurvive2@reddit
Bulls. I still have my starter bulls complete outfit button up bulls shirt and matching shorts, white with red pinstripes with the satin bull on the back. Had it since 92
nahmahnahm@reddit
I had the NY Giants and my sister had the Toronto Raptors because she liked the colors. Lol
-electric-warrior-@reddit
Seattle Mariners in the final years of the light blue with the baseball and M’s inside it. Loved the blue. Still hate the logo. Nothing but fond memories of the jacket. Still have it, too!
RoyalZeal@reddit
I remember them being a big deal but I never had one.
AssignmentFar1038@reddit
We didn’t have the money for a real Starter so my parents bought me an off brand. I got made fun of the first time I wore it and barely wore it again after that. Would have been better to not have one at all.
Successful_Athlete38@reddit
Same here...I had a knock off brand with a giant "W" that was for the Wisconsin Badgers where my dad went to school. I grew up in Atlanta so nobody knew what the W was which added to the misery. That said I wore that jacket a ton because secretly I loved it because my parents at least tried.
hanshotfirst2233@reddit (OP)
I feel that. It took my dad a year to save up for my brother and I to get one.
KitchenNazi@reddit
Orlando Magic and a UNLV Runnin’ Rebels Parka.
LiGuangMing1981@reddit
Had one in the mid-90s. Florida Panthers. Not from Florida. Not even from the US. Just really liked the Panthers' old logo (best logo in the NHL at the time, IMO).
HotSteak@reddit
Seattle Supersonics.
My cousin and I both had matching coats, and we lived in Minnesota.
mwcoast82@reddit
Full Zip Chicago Blackhawks
linecookdaddy@reddit
I had a black Lakers one, but it was like 91-92ish
squirrelly73@reddit
Chicago Bulls, which was a traitorous move in small town PNW. I didn't know any better in 1991. I got Nike Flights for Xmas that year too, and I was secretly upset that I didn't get the "AIR" version.
TriStarSwampWitch@reddit
My sister got a Miami Dolphins jacket because all her friends had their favorite teams but my sister just liked dolphins.
geekgirlwww@reddit
Okay that’s adorable
honky_Killer@reddit
Phoenix Suns. Pullover, Barkley era.
hyzerKite@reddit
Raiders. I loved the whole NWA look.
BabymanC@reddit
Purdue Boilermakers
SignificantApricot69@reddit
Wasn’t until around ‘91 for me I think
Sparked_Zwei@reddit
Had a black parka Chicago Bulls coat.
TonyGunks_sportsbook@reddit
I had a Raiders one that was the same design as the Charlotte Hornets one people always post, just in Raider's black, white, and silver.
vidvicious@reddit
I had one in the 90s. Baltimore Orioles.
Feisty-Extension-20@reddit
RidingUpFromBangor@reddit
Florida Gators is the one I wanted when I realized that the girls liked to wear guys’ jackets if they liked them. But for some reason only NBA and college football were the popular ones. In a tiny town in Southern California. I think it had to do with lots of bright colors
Helo7606@reddit
I had a Phoenix Suns and Cowboys starter pullover
AdvancedDay7854@reddit
I still have my HOUSTON Oilers starter jacket from 1988. I also have my Apex one from 91.
Fuck the titans
Blizzard_Buffalo@reddit
I had a Raiders one only because I liked Bo Jackson. Dad was a Chiefs fan so we gave each other shit all the time, lol.
Few_Fall_7027@reddit
Duke. No idea why, didn't live near them or follow them.
BuggyBonzai@reddit
Oilers, but I live in Southern California so I got to wear it like 3 times before I outgrew it.
MamboNumber-6@reddit
Raiders, two of them.
The all-white with the logo over the heart and “RAIDERS” in a semi-circle on the back.
Then the all-black with the logo over the heart and the giant logo on the back.
hanshotfirst2233@reddit (OP)
I had a few friends with the white jacket as well.
cmacfarland64@reddit
I grew up in Chicago. The most popular starter jackets growing up were Bulls, Bears, 49ers, Cowboys, Hornets. I wanted to be different, so I got a Miami Hurricanes one. My dad lost his mind as a Notre Dame fan.
RunEatRalph@reddit
I had a Miami Dolphins jacket. It was rough to look at. One girl called it a toothpaste jacket. Accurate.
BuffOrange@reddit
She's a keeper. At least you weren't 65yrs old like Shula.
catsoncrack420@reddit
Cleveland Browns gifted to me by my cousin, couldn't afford it. I liked the orange interior but doo doo brown outside wasn't my favorite so I stuck to my sturdy and warm Carhartt. NYC winters seemed colder back then.
Paperbackhero@reddit
Had a Phoenix Cardnials jacket...loved the colours, and we didn't have a NFL team...and then a 49ers, Celtics, Flyers...and began collecting them in the early 2000s.
