AdventurousBaby6514@reddit
you are going to destroy your shoulder that’s 800 pounds of recoil
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
No, this load was like 200 pounds. I've shot it up to 300 pounds of recoil
AdventurousBaby6514@reddit
Still going to destroy your shoulder if you don’t p that thing in the sliding thing you showed in part of the video
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
No
Firm-Item-4691@reddit
What type of steel is it made from?I'm guessing forty one thirty
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Barrel is 4130. Everything else is 4140
Firm-Item-4691@reddit
Where would I find such barrel?
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
I got mine from online metals. You want cold drawn seamless. And it needs to be stress relieved. Then you want to calculate how much pressure it can withstand before you use it. Look into Barlow's Formula and hoop stress.
mask0311@reddit
It's everything I had hoped for and more!
nan0brain@reddit
Joy wise, 4-bore or this one?
cathode-raygun@reddit
Truly impressive.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
After 2 years of starting this build, I finally shouldered it! This was a very mild load, 350 grains of 1F black powder and 5000 grains of shot. It's definitely got some recoil, but I can handle more. My brother shot the same load as me, but we managed to break my bog pod and he dropped it 😬
I look forward to doing some serious testing with this bad boy
Altruistic_Major_553@reddit
How much did the project cost? Seeing it in action I now have a strong urge to try it myself 😂
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Man, I didn't keep tabs as good as I should have. I also had some setbacks and redesigns that made me spend more money. High side $6500. That's absolutely everything, screw ups included.
Altruistic_Major_553@reddit
Good to know! Looks like I’ll be starting with something slightly less ambitious for a first attempt, maybe one of those build your own Kentucky Rifle kits for $350 instead of
almighty_ruler@reddit
I'm going to pick up some pvc and a bag of potatoes I guess
1Pwnage@reddit
DIY and Punt Gun is not something I would necessarily want to hear in the same sentence
im-feeling-lucky@reddit
well clearly it worked
Memento101Mori@reddit
I read that as grams, not grains.
3/4lb powder 10+ lb shot
Is not the 1/20 lb powder and 5/7 lb of shot that you did use.
deadface008@reddit
"my brother shot the same load as me", 5000 grains will get your bloodline wherever it wants to go
NerdWhoLikesTrees@reddit
Lmao
Awesome project all jokes aside!
BattleHall@reddit
Nice project. If you angle that cheek riser down towards the palm swell, it'll be more like the traditional "heavy recoil" stocks they put on African big bore rifles. Since the gun recoils backwards and upwards, you want the stock to drop away forward of where your cheek makes contact so it doesn't smack you in the face too bad.
Sianmink@reddit
Yea my very first thought
"That photography tripod is about 50 pounds too light to survive this."
Sit_back_and_panic@reddit
Damn lol would’ve thought your brother might think to pull up his pants and brace himself for that shot
Lompehovelen@reddit
Incredible build, thats great.
Also what model is that Kubota?
KccOStL33@reddit
Dude in the green looked like he thought he was about to fire a bb gun.. Lol
ballman666@reddit
Sir, that is freakin awesome!
0reasons@reddit
I have a bad shoulder, I couldn't do it 😂
sparkysparkyboom@reddit
Do you know if this takes Glock mags?
TacTurtle@reddit
This could fire Glock slides
olenamerikkalainen@reddit
I’m sure they fit down the barrel….
iNapkin66@reddit
Lol, I think you need a beefier/heavier gun mount.
Running some guesses to the numbers gets this into similar energy levels as 50bmg.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
The aluminum casting on the leg cracking in half was not on my bingo card for the day lol I sent the manufacturer an email asking if they sell replacement components. Hopefully, they do. I will probably end up making my own tripod out of steel tubing.
TacTurtle@reddit
A bipod with stout legs would allow it to rock back, plus it would double as stand while loading....
iNapkin66@reddit
I mean, you've spent 6500 and however many hours making the gun, I'm pretty confident you can make a more suitable tripod than you can buy.
Keep posting videos and pictures please, I'm living vicariously through you on this one.
BonjinTheMark@reddit
Looks like a clavicle/shoulder breaker
MrSpudzz@reddit
Roughly how expensive is it per shot?? My 9MM deal finder mindset has to know!
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Uhhh not including the wadding roughly $4.18 a shot when using shooting #4 shot with a 450 grain charge
anothercarguy@reddit
Is the wedding old T-shirt?
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
1/2" felt and cereal boxes
anothercarguy@reddit
Needs a sling attachment. You should tag Kentucky ballistics
BulletSwaging@reddit
Fuck and yes come to mind. Please add a ballistics gel test. Would love to see what it could do. When will you take the next step and cast a conical bullet? What’s your load you use?
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
I cast some 1.5" round ball that I will be testing whenever I get a place with a big hillside. I'll definitely break out the ballistic gel for that. I might experiment with some foster style slugs down the line.
BulletSwaging@reddit
I have a feeling you will find “your” limit before the limitations of the firearm. This is awesome, keep posting.
mmmhmmhim@reddit
bet the limit will be under 5.
under 5 shots a day no matter what the load is
SmrtassUsername@reddit
Make a trailer mount and give it a gun shield and you'll have yourself a homemade Pak-36 or 2 pounder anti-tank gun. This is ridiculous in a good way. I like it!
thegrumpymechanic@reddit
Been fun watching this project progress.
Congratulations on finally shooting it.
MArkansas-254@reddit
Looks cool! You should reach out to Kentucky Ballistics on YT. I bet he’d be interested in giving it a go!
ottermupps@reddit
So, this is a muzzleloader with an inline 209 primer? CVA Wolf style?
I'm really happy to see this project succeed. I've been following along since your early Replicator project, and it's super impressive.
Is this thing too heavy to shoot freehand/no tripod?
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Yep! More CVA buckhorn style.
And thanks, this was a lot of love and hard work.
And yes, far too heavy to shoot freehand. The gun itself weighs 50 pounds and a lot of the weight is in the front. I don't know anyone big and strong enough to just shoulder it without support
ottermupps@reddit
Ah, that would do it. You've probably gotten this one a lot, but have you considered getting Kentucky Ballistics to shoot it?
itsbildo@reddit
Just as the founding fathers intended
Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up, Just as the founding fathers intended
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Can't go wrong with a classic
Apart_Beautiful_4846@reddit
Man, I love everything about what you did here….save 1 thing:
If I’d worked so effing hard on this build, I would have instructed my friends (kiddos?) on how to properly brace themselves against that recoil. Maybe I’m just a jaded old man, but watching the last 2 shooters operate that amazing weapon made me want to hit my balls will a hammer.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Thanks! That's my brother. I told him right before he shot how to lean into it and where to put the pad. He didn't listen to what I told him, and I was ready to see the consequences of his actions lol. If it was any stouter of a load, I would have definitely stepped in and corrected him just for his safety. The ground was super soft from rain, so no damage occurred to the gun, just his ego. Which is why I was laughing so damn hard in the video.
Im-not-a-furry-trust@reddit
Aka how to get a gun kiss after 1 round
wildraft1@reddit
Dude in the green shirt had it comming...
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
That's my brother 🤣 I literally told him to lean in it right before he shot. He didn't listen.
BootlegEngineer@reddit
That slow mo had me cackling.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
He's a goofy fucker, but I love him for it
BootlegEngineer@reddit
Sick build btw. Take care of that shoulder lol
Quttlefish@reddit
This thing is awesome.
I like how you all let green shirt just stand straight up on his back leg like that was ever going to work out for him lol.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
That's what's called "brotherly love". I told him to lean into it and where to hold the pad, but he clearly didn't listen 🤣
Quttlefish@reddit
Next time get him a belt hahaha he almost lost his britches
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Dude, he kills me with that! I'm always telling him to pull his damn pants up.
Adventurous_Blood469@reddit
She be kickin.
DirtyRoller@reddit
Can't tell if you're wearing plugs or not, but the lack of ear muffs is certainly a choice.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
So, I will admit when I shot it the first time, I was so nervous I forgot to take them out of my pocket. When my brother shot, I had foam ones in. However, it wasn't terribly loud at the ear, given that the muzzle is like 5' away from your head. But I'm definitely not going to forget my ear pro next time I shoot it 😅
Plenty-Ad-777@reddit
Other than "we can do it!"... why?
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Because I wanted to. That's literally the only reason this exists.
Plenty-Ad-777@reddit
Cool. Fair enough.
Just a thought; when recalculate cost of the system... add "lifetime of shoulder therapy" as a bullet point.
dontusemybeta@reddit
Are you sure you aren't dead
all4tez@reddit
Haha oww!
