Ordered a grilled cheese in a resort in Cancun and received this beauty

Triple stack bread and a cheese topper, what's not to love
Minimum-Act6859@reddit
That is as bad as ordering Tacos in the UK š¬š§
New_Belt_4814@reddit
Who the fuck orders a grilled cheese anywhere let alone in Cancun.
corianderjimbro@reddit
Even my kid wouldnāt order this on vacation in Cancun.
Fun-Swimming4133@reddit
did Charlie Kelly make that?
Cute_Equipment1220@reddit
they made it with spite but it looks so goodā¦ā¦..
ok-milk@reddit
I feel like that is exactly what you should get if you order a grilled cheese at a resort in Mexico.
EFTucker@reddit
Nah fuck that. Grilled cheese is a food that doesnāt really have boarders. Itās super easy to make as well; cheese, bread, and butter. Pan on heat, soft butter on bread (inside and out) then pan, slap the sandwich on pan, very light brown first side and flip, brown second side to perfection and flip, lower heat then add more butter and cover pan for steaming to help melt cheese, and done.
Thatās like 2 minutes of cooking for a banger of a sandwich that works for any of the three meals daily or even a snack.
allisjow@reddit
I have absolutely no idea what I was thinking but I ordered a margarita in Poland. The bartender improvised one for me and I was grateful.
Snoutysensations@reddit
I was surprised to find a Mexican-Korean fusion restaurant in Poland. Of course I had to try it but it was actually pretty good. Poland's not an Eastern Bloc backwater anymore; their big cities are pretty cosmopolitan.
Still, it's rare to find good Mexican cuisine anywhere there aren't a lot of Mexicans.
meowiful@reddit
I'm from a very small town in Tennessee. We have about 3k people. A good amount happen to be Mexican. We have 2 Mexican restaurants in town and both of them are really good, neither are chains. Imagine my surprise the first couple times I went to New York and couldn't find good Mexican. After a few years of trying, I just decided to stick to Italian. Had no clue I was so I privileged.
User-NetOfInter@reddit
New Yorks Hispanic population isnāt majority or even largely Mexicans.
Dominican is the largest block by far.
Also if you werenāt in queens or Brooklyn, thatās it
meowiful@reddit
Yep, this was like 20 years ago, but at the time, after I eventually just started asking people, they said the Mexican food was in Queens. My reaction, at the time, was "where the airport lives? ::pearl clutch:: š I ate a lot of Tex-Mex trying to find Mexican in Manhattan lol
antonio_inverness@reddit
Yep, I went looking for tortillas one night around 30 years ago in bodegas and small grocery stores around Manhattan. I was shocked (SHOCKED!) not to be able to find any anywhere. I went to a small Puerto Rican (?) owned bodega and tried to describe tortillas. The dude came back with pie crusts. Pie crusts!!
lefkoz@reddit
Yes but New York still has an extremely sizeable Mexican population, still way larger than most other places.
UOENO611@reddit
Well tbh it has a larger population than almost any city in the world lol
xxgook@reddit
well there's ur problem, you went to New York looking for Mexican food when you should've been looking for Colombian, Puerto Rican, or Jamaican food.
meowiful@reddit
Absolutely! I didn't know that then, though. The people that I'd eat out with over the years would trend towards Indian and Thai with lots of vegan thrown in - one of yhe places had fake bones, like wooden dowels, but I did get to try some Puerto Rican chicken and rice, too. I wish I had gotten to try Jamaican food. I still haven't, but hopefully someday š¤š¼at the end of the day, I'm just glad I've had the opportunity to try so many different types of cuisines both at home and away. But yeah, in reality, it was like going to New York looking for barbecue. It wasn't a well-informed endeavor.
xxgook@reddit
Oh man Jamaican cuisine has some absolutely killer vegan dishes (but oxtail or curry goat is what you're looking for) also this may be a really tough one, but if you can ever find some Khmer (Cambodian) cuisine please do it.
e_lizz@reddit
That one standing-room-only tacos place by times square is authentic and delicious. $5 a taco but worth every penny.
Dulcenia@reddit
Every small town in TN has a Mexican and Chinese place. Both are not traditional, but are good.
Easy-Concentrate2636@reddit
You have to go to the neighborhood with the Mexican restaurants. There are plenty of mom and pop Mexican restaurants here, many more than 2.
Agillian_01@reddit
Most of the countries in (western) europe have some colonial history. We don't really have Mexican food bc Mexico is very far away, and there are barely any Mexicans here. Just look up whatever nation used to be the country you're visiting's colony and look for a restaurant that offers this quisine. Here in the Netherlands, we have REALLY good Surinam and Indonesian food!
Snoutysensations@reddit
Wow I'm going to have to track down Surinam food. Afto-Jewish-Javanese-Indigenous fusion cuisine? Sign me up!
Worksux36g@reddit
As someone who tried mexican food for the first time a few weeks ago, as far as the burrito is concerned, I think it is gastronomically redundant (by having both beans AND rice; why!? pick one)... i do like the taco, though (but the soft shell one).
Heil_Heimskr@reddit
I feel like this rule is pretty universal tbh.
Snoutysensations@reddit
Yes absolutely.
But there are some cuisines -- typically, the ones that use more generous helpings of spice or local ingredients hard to source abroad -- that are more vulnerable to being watered down than others. And some ethnicities have more established diaspora communities to do the cooking than others. Then there's the Thai restaurant industry, where the Thai government actually stepped in to organize so-called culinary diplomacy.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culinary_diplomacy
Luci-Noir@reddit
What is Mexican-Korean fusion like? Mexican food is my fav but Iāve never had Korean.
Snoutysensations@reddit
It can be really good. It originated in Los Angeles, where you have dense populations of fresh off the boat Koreans and Mexicans.
Here's a review of a Mexican-Korean fusion restaurant in the Philippines:
https://pornografeed.wordpress.com/2016/01/24/senor-kimchi/
Hard to describe Korean food if you haven't had it before, but imagine a very spicy version of Japanese or Chinese heavy on pickled cabbage, garlic, and sesame. Lot of grilled meats in spicy sauce. Some use of fermented bean paste, soy sauce, tofu, seafood. A lot of adapted dishes from Japanese and Chinese traditions, usually with Korean flavor upgrades. You can probably find authentic Korean food in major global cities but your best bet if you're not in Korea is to find a town with a large expat population like NYC or LA.
DeadOligarchs@reddit
Mexican food outside of places with many Mexicans makes me despise cumin. Moving from California to Europe sucks in that regard, I'd kill for a decent burrito :c
Snoutysensations@reddit
Yeah you need a customer base that recognizes and demands authentic flavor. Otherwise they'll adjust their menu and seasonings to what locals expect, which in Europe will be pretty bland. There are enough Mexicans living everywhere in the USA that most communities can support an authentic Mexican place. Maybe the initial customer base will be Mexican immigrant farm workers, but soon enough the local gringo foodies will discover it.
TheCriticalGerman@reddit
But you will find polish people everywhere.
Snoutysensations@reddit
Germans like to travel too but I wouldn't have high expectations for a Mexican restaurant in Germany. (I'd expect good middle-eastern or Turkish, especially in Berlin. Actually I wouldn't be surprised to find good Mexican in Berlin)
sensitiveskin82@reddit
We asked for hot sauce in Germany, and received mustard.
Particular-Image1556@reddit
What kind of place and what did you order. Because germans have no right to be picky about condiments. I know what they order on vacation.
sensitiveskin82@reddit
No, it's just that that was all the German restaurants had as far as a spicy condiment. Munich and Frankfurt both.Ā
Ironically, I had the spiciest Indian food of my life in Munich. When I went to different pharmacies looking for heartburn medicine, they didn't know what I was talking about (probably my fault). So I had to use ice cream.
StuckInHoleSendHelp@reddit
I once ordered a whiskey sour in Czechia and got straight whiskey with a line wedge, which was honestly fine by me.
TonalParsnips@reddit
I mean... it's tequila, simple, and lime. Wouldn't nearly every bartender have those things?
dogman1890@reddit
Donāt forget the triple sec!
But yes, any bar should have them all.
Satakans@reddit
Contreau for margs.
siandresi@reddit
Any orange liqueur would do, not just triple sec. Grand Manier is very popular!
TonalParsnips@reddit
I'm more a fan of Tommy's Marg that omits the triple sec, but tbh they're all delicious.
dogman1890@reddit
Iāve never had a bad Marg but theyāre one of the most subjective drinks. I personally like midrange to trash tequila in mine because I like the taste.
Flat_Initial_1823@reddit
I mean, lime vodka is still delicious.
marteautemps@reddit
If you really like something and it's something you regularly order I almost might have to just to see what I get. Might end up with the best you ever got or sone weird version that you will think about for the rest of your life.
imosh818@reddit
100% agree
ConfusedAndCurious17@reddit
Hot take: if something is on a menu it should be made at least with some half ass level of competency. It doesnāt have to be great, or even good, but it should be serviceable for what itās trying to be. If youāre incapable of that then it shouldnāt be on your menu.
I donāt know why anyone old enough to make a Reddit post would want a grilled cheese at a Mexican resort, however it would definitely be a great easy and safe choice that parents could order for a picky child when on vacation in Mexico.
sykoKanesh@reddit
Really? Can't wrap the ol brain around someone wanting to eat what they like?
ConfusedAndCurious17@reddit
You could have made a cheese toasty at home. Itās like going on vacation just to sit in your hotel room and watch English Cartoon Network reruns all day.
No I canāt wrap my head around adults that have the palette of a 6 year old.
sykoKanesh@reddit
Well, whatever makes you feel superior I guess.
ConfusedAndCurious17@reddit
Itās not about feeling superior lol. I just think itās goofy. People can eat what they want. As I said if itās on a menu it should be done somewhat competently. I donāt understand the point of going someplace else, especially if youāre paying for it, and wanting to just do what you could have done much cheaper at home.
My wife was very very picky when we started dating, but she always wanted to go out to nice restaurants, then she would order chicken tenders sometimes off of the kids menu. At that point why the hell arenāt we just going to someplace that specializes in chicken?
I do find people who refuse to try new things to be childish, and I think they are missing out on a ton of life for pretty much no reason, and thereās a difference between knowing āI donāt like spicy food so I wonāt order my Thai green curry spicyā and āI donāt like Asian food because I had Panda Express once so I wonāt try Thai green curry.ā
cyprinidont@reddit
Redditors seem like the type to order a grilled cheese off menu
MrJigglyBrown@reddit
Even though I think staying at resorts is always a waste of a vacation, ordering a grilled cheese makes sense to me.
Itās not like they went to a fine dining restaurant and ordered it. Theyāre probably at their crappy resort for at least three nights. Sometimes you just have a taste for something simple.
Mexicans know what good bread and cheese are, theyāre sending op a a message
cyprinidont@reddit
I actually highly doubt the majority of the people working in a Cancun resort kitchen are Mexicans.
MrJigglyBrown@reddit
That is absurd
cyprinidont@reddit
Resorts hire Americans who want to work at a resort. Have you ever been to one? Yes there's some local staff but far far fewer than in the local businesses. A resort is like a little enclave of insularity and familiarity for the travellers.
ConfusedAndCurious17@reddit
I go to a Cancun resort about every other year. I wake up at the ass crack of dawn every day out of habit. Iāve several times enjoyed a Bloody Mary and watched the employees arrive for the day from my balcony. Most of the employees are Mexican. At the resort I stay at there is a pretty wide variety of restaurants based on different cultural cuisines, and I have seen a Japanese man running the kitchen in a Japanese restaurant, but at the basic grill and all of the Mexican food based restaurants all of the staff Iāve seen are Mexican. Everyoneās speaking Spanish except to the customers.
Iām sure some Americans get hired at resorts, but they mostly seem to employ locals at the ones Iāve been to.
NewRequirement7094@reddit
Have you ever been to a resort in Mexico?! They are absolutely staffed by Mexicans. People from the USA have a hard time even getting a work visa in Mexico.

MorbidMarko@reddit
Yes! I was at a resort in Mexico and some fat lady with an American accent was bitching out the staff because all she wanted for breakfast was a burger it wasnāt on the menu! The amazing staff managed to calm her down and reminded her that the only burger on the resort was the bbq joint on the beach. I was laughing so hard, a shitty flat grey burger for breakfast.
sykoKanesh@reddit
Oh shove it, get off your collective high horses.
Ok_Condition5837@reddit
Unless OP is an autistic child, this does not make any sense.
sykoKanesh@reddit
Oh bullshit, you folks in this thread need to get off whatever high horse you think you're riding.
Adventurous-Car3770@reddit
I'm an autistic adult, and at no point in my life would this have made sense.
Ok_Condition5837@reddit
Sorry. Have an autistic nephew & grilled cheese is one of his safe foods. So my family has ordered it in Asia for example.
OsosHormigueros@reddit
This is very unlike regular grilled cheese so it wouldn't even be considered the same thing as the actual safe food to most kids
Ok_Condition5837@reddit
Yes but you wouldn't generally know that prior to ordering & receiving it.
BadFont777@reddit
The conversation was about expectation not being experience. Right? Yall, got lost in the sauce I think.
Adventurous-Car3770@reddit
That sandwich could use a little sauce
Ok_Condition5837@reddit
Ah, ok then
Adventurous-Car3770@reddit
Oh, I do get it. My little guy is also autistic. He's actually a pretty good eater, but at almost 3 years old we're still feeding him pureed foods.
Miss_Aizea@reddit
My parents just hit us and locked up the food so we'd eat whatever they made, so I'm not a picky version of autism (mostly). I'm so lucky /s. I used to "run away" and just forage in the woods.
Adventurous-Car3770@reddit
I always love how reddit will downvote someone's account of a personal experience. What exactly is the rebuttal? "No, that didn't happen?"
fat-wombat@reddit
Who else orders a grilled cheese in Cancun? I think the shoe fits.
BogeyLowenstein@reddit
Sometimes you feel not great on vacation and just want comfort food. If my stomach is upset on a trip in Mexico, Iām not wanting Mexican food.
roostersnuffed@reddit
For the most bizarre cultural lost in translation I'd like to throw in my bid.
The a resort in Hurgada Egypt that has a "Mexican" restaurant. We ordered nachos. We received a deep fried flatbread cut into quarters. Placed on top was 1/8th of a tomato wedge drizzled in olive oil, cilantro and cumin. Npt to mention the cumin baked into the flatbread.
ok-milk@reddit
Huh, I wonder if it was their take on āEgyptian nachosā or just a complete miss on Tex-Mex nachos?
In any case, deep fried flatbread sounds like a dental apocalypse, yikes.
roostersnuffed@reddit
The food served at that resort was abysmal as a whole, we dined out the rest of the time there.
Either way, they weren't good.
Luci-Noir@reddit
A smacked.
LegoBattIeDroid@reddit
why? do you think we don't like grilled cheese in mexico?
kakawisNOTlaw@reddit
A resort in Mexico is specifically a place to venture out of your comfort zone.
LegoBattIeDroid@reddit
last time I checked a resort is a place to relax
kakawisNOTlaw@reddit
Why waste the money to go to a Mexican resort when you can go to a nice place in Florida.
LegoBattIeDroid@reddit
because I don't live in florida
kakawisNOTlaw@reddit
Incredible logic
MrJigglyBrown@reddit
You realize the person youāre talking to likely lives in Mexico. So yes it would make much more sense for them to travel to Cancun rather than Florida if theyāre just going to a resort
BrownButteredSage@reddit
And who are you, the vacation police?
kakawisNOTlaw@reddit

TRIGMILLION@reddit

wiiillloooo@reddit
Resorts all around the world are made for Americans to feel like they havenāt left America.
creampop_@reddit
I was gonna say lol I've been to quite a few resorts around the world and the one thing they all have in common is being set up to make American comfort food like burgers and grilled cheese and fries. Fat Americans getting poolside delivery is probably half the revenue of any given resort.
FewReturn2sunlitLand@reddit
That's literally the opposite of what resorts are for.
kakawisNOTlaw@reddit
In Mexico, yeah it is. Otherwise you'd just go somewhere in the states.
mynameismulan@reddit

jprs29@reddit
Im gonna guess it wasnāt a menu item but the wait and kitchen staff tried to accommodate. When you add a potential language barrier this is what you get.
Cliff-Bungalow@reddit
I think at some of these resorts the people working there do not care enough to get it right and/or make a sport of messing with the guests in ways that they can't get in trouble for. I know I would if I worked at a place like that. I highly doubt no one has ordered a grilled cheese at a resort in Cancun before. And it's probably the easiest item to make, it's just bread and cheese made like a sandwich. You're telling me Mexican people haven't seen sandwiches before? Lol
jprs29@reddit
Well, I am Mexican and grilled cheese was not in my vocabulary until I moved to Canada. We know sandwiches but not the same ones as you, like tortas for example. A lot of the staff working at resorts come from indigenous communities nearby and they probably havenāt been exposed to American food.
Cliff-Bungalow@reddit
That's fair although if I asked you to make a sandwich of any kind, would you use 3 slices of bread and put the ingredients on the outside of the bread instead of inside? There's really only 2 ways you can mess up a sandwich and they seem to have done both.
That to me shows it's either on purpose or they really do not care because they aren't being paid enough.
dauphindauphin@reddit
Iām not familiar with Mexican cooking terminology but I know that in my country a āgrilled cheeseā wouldnāt mean a sandwich. For us āgrillā means the same as broil to Americans, and the dish would likely be one piece of toast with broiled (or āgrilledā to us) slices of cheese on top. If you were trying to order a sandwich made up of that I can see how the end result could resemble the photo.
Especially if the cook is inexperienced or confused by what was ordered.

Nope, it's Mexican. Chilangos will tell you that quesadillas don't need cheese, and it's technically another word for taco, but the quesadilla does have cheese and it is Mexican. You can make them with corn or flour tortillas. My personal favorite take is the sincronizada, which puts a piece of grilled ham inside the quesadilla.
