How often do you go to Mexico?

What part and what for, I think about going to Taumalipas or Veracruz regularly to shop but don’t know how safe that is.
clandestine_atelier@reddit
visit friends and family.
baddspellar@reddit
I live in New England. I can easily drive to Canada, and I have visited many times. Mexico would be a big trip, and it's not high on my priority list. I'm more of a cool/cold weather person. I visit Canada every winter to ski.
LeadDiscovery@reddit
Classic, a New Englander vacationing... in essentially New England...
A big adventure otherwise is hitting a Cumbies 3 towns over...
JourneyThiefer@reddit
Does crossing the border take long?
baddspellar@reddit
Entering Canada is fast. Coming home is slow
BensOnTheRadio@reddit
Funny I had the opposite experience. I took the train into Canada and the border agent sweated me. “Why did you take the train? Why didn’t you fly?” And a lot of other questions. For my flight back to the US, the agent just asked if I had a nice trip and sent me on my way.
sanesociopath@reddit
Indeed... this is for all of our borders.
Even as a straight white male (so no discrimination involved) I hate dealing with our border guards.
But man is entering other countries from the US easy.
shelwood46@reddit
This is funny to me because the only time I've had trouble at borders is 1. going from St Thomas to Tortola (BVI), they tossed my bags, thinking I was smuggling drugs (I am a very nerdy white woman) and 2. the Peace bridge from Buffalo into Niagara Falls, the Canadian BP decided my ancient Civic meant I was trying to smuggle guns and made me sit there for an hour while they tossed my car (I was not smuggling anything). Never had a problem the other way.
sanesociopath@reddit
I've had a couple searches and needing to get out and talk to the us side a few times and they always make it so intense, even when you're a kid. Especially the time my mom didn't take the right turn at the fall and got on a no turn-around bridge
My mom crossed into Mexico improperly a few years ago and aside from a short chase down that was easier than any entry to the US I've had, even air port ones.
Pinwurm@reddit
Depends on the crossing? But it’s always taken like 5 minutes or less.
Coming back takes time - US Border Patrol is a lot slower and asks more questions. On a good day, 10-15 minutes. Bad day, 45 minutes.
When I was young, there wasn’t always “official crossings”. There was some country roads you can take and you just know you hit Canada when the mileage signs changes to kilometers. Theoretically, you were supposed to call in once you cross (there was phone booths), but I’m not sure if people ever did. Pretty much all those roads closed during Bush W.
JourneyThiefer@reddit
Wow that’s wild they all closed
dubbs911@reddit
Going into Mexico, quick. Coming back to US, very long. I don’t recommend driving AT ALL. Fly to your destination, walk across if going to TJ from San Diego.
OldCompany50@reddit
Airplanes fly right over
senjisilly@reddit
Traveling into Mexico is fast. They rarely stop cars coming in. Crossing the border back to San Diego, California can take hours. We watched a car being completely dissembled after a US Border Patrol German Shepherd smelled drugs. Since we were only inching forward every 20 minutes, we saw the whole thing unfold from beginning to end. They Mexicans take advantage of this crazy bottleneck by selling churros, tourist junk, and puppies.
Sea_Life_5909@reddit

I live near the southern border and have crossed the northern border twice in the past couple of years and it was mind boggling how chill it is compared to El Paso/Juarez.
LeadDiscovery@reddit
Been to Mexico via Cruise about 3x over the past 6 years. Everything south of Tijuana is generally fine. However, due to the cruise there are always armed guards throughout specific corridors where all the tourists walk into town or to local attractions - Don't go off the beaten path, or you will likely get beaten on that path.

I have only been to watch. One of my kids helped prep an envelope for inflating one year. It's beautiful even from the ground, though. I have been about 7 times, drinking NM Pinion coffee, eating cinnamon rolls from.a cone, and watching them launch.

I've been to Mexico three times. I'm trying to think if I stepped in New Mexico when visiting Utah and Colorado, but I don't think I went that far south. .
Guilty_Objective4602@reddit
Me, too, but way more than 4. I’ve only been to Mexico twice in my lifetime, both times as same-day stopovers on cruises my in-laws convinced us to go on. My parents live in Texas (but not near the border) and I remember being in a car with them once as a younger adult and driving somewhere where we were just across from the Mexican border, before I’d ever been there. I begged my dad to drive us just across the border and back, just so I could say I’d finally been to Mexico, but he absolutely refused, because he didn’t want to risk anything going wrong.
EcstasyCalculus@reddit
I guess I'm not picking up what you're putting down, because those two statements seem to directly contradict each other.
Guilty_Objective4602@reddit

New Cancun is kinda lame, tbh
crafty_j4@reddit
Albuquerque is kind of cool, but the rest of it… nah. I went a few times when I was a kid and drove through during my move to Cali. It was my least favorite state to drive through.
door-harp@reddit
Well… the feeling is probably mutual lol. New Mexico is the best, I’m sorry you’re missing out! Also driving through on your way to somewhere else is no way to see any state probably. Imagine if people judged the whole state of California based on I-5 from LA to Sacramento and came to the conclusion that California sucks, it’s nothing but flat farmland and bad smells.
crafty_j4@reddit
Fair point on not just judging only by the drive. However, you do get a sense of the landscape and compared to other states, there was A LOT of “nowhereness”. California and Arizona have it too, but the landscape also changes as you drive through them. For example, I thought the area around Flagstaff was gorgeous. I really didn’t get any of that from New Mexico.
Also, as I said, I’ve stayed a few times. I have family there. Looking at the map, I think they live in the middle of nowhere though.
In all seriousness I’m open to recommendations of places to go/things to do there.
door-harp@reddit
We have gorgeous mountains in both the northern and southern parts of the state. A lot of the state is covered in mountains. The southern end of the Rockies is in NM and the Gila wilderness in southern NM is lovely. If you’re outdoorsy we have skiing and hiking all over from the north in Taos to the south in Ruidoso. Plus the Chihuahuan desert in south NM is one of the most biologically diverse deserts. We also have a really rich culture here that’s unique, tons of museums and historical sites and a world famous art scene (heard of Santa Fe?). The eastern edge of the state is basically Texas so you can throw that in the trash (sorry Hobbs and Clovis) and I-40 does manage to miss all the scenery in the state. I agree Flagstaff is, frustratingly, the best scenery between Albuquerque and LA on I-40, but there are so many interesting things to do and see here if you manage to get off the freeway. And I love Albuquerque specifically as an awesome working class city with tons of character but I appreciate that it’s not for everyone.
Johnsoline@reddit
I remember being at the farmers' market in Santa Fé a few years back and overhearing a conversation between a hippie dippie hippie dip art lady and a regular Mexican guy. She was trying to sell him a blanket and the dialog went something like this:
"Well this is hand made in Mexico and is a cultural item bla bla"
"Ok yeah but why is it so fucking expensive?"
Santa Fé in a nutshell.
door-harp@reddit
I worked in Santa Fe for 8 years and it’s a weird place for sure. It’s super segregated and the local folks have been being pushed out by transplants for a long time. But for all its troubles there’s a lot of cultural richness and depth there.
Johnsoline@reddit
I find it ironic how all the 60s hippies ended up being the driving force of gentrification. Oh and also fucked the earth.

Santa Fe is cooler. Taos isn’t bad. Visiting some of the national monuments such as Bandelier is worthwhile.
Our drive from Durango to Taos was beautiful - except for my fear of running out of gas before we got to a gas station (because I didn’t warn my husband to fill up when I saw the “last station for X miles sign”).

Never but I live in Southern California and the people who are of Mexican descent that I know have been over the border to Tijuana and whatnot even if that's not where their family is from or even if they're not a citizen. I think their family's probably take them. It's like if I move to Canada and lived in Vancouver I would probably pop down to Seattle quite often even though I'm not even remotely from Seattle. Just because I would miss my own country.
This is pure speculation though honestly.
It's getting harder to do now you have to fill out a form and like nobody in the US was notified about it because its from the Mexican government so there are people who go to Mexico on the regular by car or on foot who were super confused.

And when I vacation, I will never spend money to stay in a resort, in order to be safe.
So… unsafe drinking water and exorbitant prices to stay in resorts are automatically a NO VACATION ZONE.
I’d rather go camping in the nice weather, cabins in the winter, explore America in an RV or stay in inexpensive hotels… traveling by car.

I just went for the first time (Mexico City) in January! It's funny saying that since I live in SoCal and could be in Tijuana in about 3 hours, lol. In my case, I was traveling around the US a lot and just never got around to getting a passport. Now I can check out some more border towns along my travels (and eventually get out to the interior of Mexico, of course)!

I used to go to Mexico every weekend with my parents and when I was in high school in the 90s I went with my friends to hit the local bars. But I grew up in a border town. As an adult, I’ve gone to Tijuana to help train call center staff for my employer at the time.

Never and I live an hour from the border. Even when I had a passport I never went down there. Getting across is about 5 minutes and hassle free, but coming back over is always a nightmare. I once went to Tijuana with a friend to get malaria meds, and it took us 90 minutes to get back over. The only reason I could see going is if I was under 21.

My dad used to live in south Texas. One time, we drove to the border crossing in Laredo, TX, walked into Nuevo Laredo, Mexico and walked around for a couple hours. Then we walked back to the US and drove back to his house. This is the only time I have even been to Mexico.
This was in the mid 90s. We didn't even have passports. Not sure how we were allowed to go through the border crossing. The thing I remember most vividly is that there was a turnstile to go through. It was free to go into Mexico but it cost a quarter to get in the US.

Traveling to Mexico is definitely common for people who live near the Mexican border. And I feel it is definitely common for the large population of Americans who are Mexican immigrants or recent descendents of Mexican immigrants, as they may want to visit family. It isn't something most Americans do all the time, but a very large portion of Americans have visited Mexico at least once.
My cousin married a Mexican woman and they frequently visit Mexico to visit family. Their two kids have citizenship to three countries (Italy, United States, and Mexico. My cousin has dual Italian and American citizenship.)
Cancun has a reputation as a popular vacation spot especially for college kids who like to drink and party. A lot of churches will visit Mexico on charity tourism trips.

It’s been a great vacation destination for us for years. (Puerto Vallarta, Cabo.) it’s super affordable, the food is so good, as is the weather and the beaches! The people are quite special. my sister used to live in SoCal, so we would go to TJ quite often. My husband and i were doing infertility stuff; at one point I went to TJ and bought the same drugs we were using, for about a third of what they cost at home. (Insurance didn’t pay and my dr. completely endorsed this.). We have two rescued dogs from MX! I have never felt unsafe, no bad experiences. I spent two weeks in PV alone, with my two young daughters, when my husband couldn’t go because of work. It was fabulous! This is making me want to go and book a trip to Merida!!!!!!

OrchidLover2008@reddit
We live 20 miles from the border. We go there about twice a year to visit our dentist and buy legal prescription medicine. We park in an Indian tribe owned parking lot on the California side of the border and walk across the border into a small town that consists mostly of dentists, eyeglasses purveyors, pharmacies, and a lot of people selling hats and T-shirts and the like. Then we stand in line to show our identification and answer questions from the Customs agents about what we bought and drive home.
MsLexicon@reddit
What's the name of your parking lot, please? And the small town you visit? (Is it TJ-adjacent, Mexicali-adjacent, or somewhere entirely different?) Would love to learn your secrets!
OrchidLover2008@reddit
The town is Algodones. It is off I-8 about 10 miles west of the Arizona border. The Fort Yuma Quechan Reservation operates the parking lot. We have seen busses that bring people from the Palm Springs area to visit dentists.

I haven’t been to Veracruz but I have cruised around Tamaulipas a bit. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back. Worst part is dealing with CBP when you come back, which is why I’d get Global Entry if you think you’ll be doing it somewhat regularly.

Some people do go, but it’s not a common part of American culture to “go to Mexico”. The closest it would come to a cultural thing is rich kids going to Cancun for spring break
nogueydude@reddit
I grew up in East county San Diego and we would go ALL the time. It was really quick to get down to Tijuana, but we preferred Tecate. A little more chill and friendly. This was back when you just needed a driver's license to get back across. We would go for lunch a lot.
I've also gone on vacation there a few times with my family at resorts.
The best was a 10 day off road trip down Baja. Mulege and Loreto were unreal. We camped every night . This was probably 2012. Felt safe the whole time.
opheliainwaders@reddit
We took an impromptu trip to Loreto in 2018 after some other vacation plans fell through, and it was one of my favorite places I’ve ever been. Super chill, easy with little kids, and a cool town overall. We would definitely go back except it’s a hike from the northeast. (I also went to Playa del Carmen a long time ago before it got built up and that was lovely but I don’t think it’s really possible to have the trip I took anymore).
nogueydude@reddit
So chill, right?! 10/10 food, 10/10 sights, 10/10 people. I can't imagine how much has changed since I went, hopefully it helps with their economy. Still plenty of empty pristine beaches ripe for camping.
Dennis_R0dman@reddit
That road trip down in Baja sounds incredible.
I live in SD and usually cross the border at least once a year by car visiting the wineries. But haven’t explored southern Baja yet beyond Cabo and La Paz.
nogueydude@reddit
I had the benefit of going along with a group of guys that go every year so we just got to follow along. It takes a lot of planning if you're going to camp, but it was such an incredible trip. Pristine empty beaches on the Pacific side, cozy little towns on the sea of Cortez side. You can follow along the Baja 1000 route.
Highly recommend

WastingMyLifeOnSocMd@reddit
People who live relatively close to the border may go regularly, but the majority do not, so citizens here on average rarely go or have not gone at all.
Europeans, in particular, forget the immense distances in the U.S. So it’s common for people on the east coast to never have been to Texas or California, much less Mexico.
For people who don’t live near Mexico travel from the U.S. to Mexico is often on Caribbean cruises or trips to resorts in Cancun and the like. So it’s not what you would call a very “everyday life” experience in Mexico.

I go about 5 times a year for work. Visit Aguascalientes, Tijuana, Queretaro, and Monterrey. I love it. I’m not a fan of the hot weather in Monterrey but I love the people, the culture. I cover Mexico, Canada and the northeast US. Mexico and Canada are by far my favorite places
DryChickenTits@reddit
Me, my mom, my sister, and my ex stepdad took a day trip to Tijuana after a trip to Disneyland in 2002. I don't remember a whole lot besides a lot of little kids working hard to sell bland churros and the cheap tacos I had at a taqueria. I'd absolutely love to go back, but I live in Northern California. The time I'd have to take off just hasn't been worth it.

Apprehensive_Yard_14@reddit
I wasn't expecting grit at all, but I wasn't expecting such an amazing city with such amazing people. I prefer it over any European country. The people were so kind. The food was amazing. I made so many friends who were just random strangers. They have visited me since then. Cancun was the complete opposite for me. It caters so much to Westerners that it doesn't even feel like Mexico. I befriended some Canadians who had also been to other parts of Mexico and had the same critics as me.

My trips to Mexico are all quite dated now; the most recent being a vacation in Cabo which is an extremely safe (and expensive) area. Many years ago I took some business meetings/conferences in bigger cities and everything was fine. I was followed off the subway once after doing some sightseeing, but it was an amateur that I quickly detected and evaded. I only took the taxis that worked with the tourist hotels that were like 10-20x more than a regular taxi but came with the assurances of not getting express kidnapped. My biggest risk was all the street food I enjoyed. For the other commentors, yes I've been to New Mexico too, had a life changing experience in a chile shop and now mail order a couple pounds of ground hatches every year :)

The U.S. state website has separate travel advisories for each Mexican state. The touristy ones like Quintana Roo (Cancun etc) and Baja Sur (Cabo etc) both just say “be cautious”, both those states are fairly safe. But for Tamaulipas it basically says “do not go for any reason, you’ll get kidnapped and/or killed”. I haven’t been to Tamaulipas to verify, but maybe do more research before going. Sounds extremely sketchy to me. That said the touristy states/areas of Mexico I mentioned are a great time, would recommend those.

I went when I was 7 years old to puerto Vallarta in 1999 with my family. I guess my parents weren’t concerned about safety back then but it seems like the sentiment since then is that besides some very touristy spots it’s incredibly dangerous. Whether that’s true or not idk, I grew up in Wisconsin so not even close.
I do remember some strange behavior (some my parents told me of I didn’t remember) like guards with machine guns walking down the beach, our taxi driver driving down the sidewalk, my dad parasailing with no waiver by just running down the beach holding the rope over people.

I used to go to Isla Cozumel every few years, and I had a timeshare there.
Cozumel is very safe, compared with most of the rest of Mexico. Tourism is their lifeblood, so the cab drivers help the police by reporting suspicious activity. The WATER around Cozumel is brilliantly clear, clean, and a very pleasant temperature. I've gone scuba diving, to about 60 feet of depth in the Cozumel Channel in October, wearing just a swimsuit and a t-shirt under my buoyancy jacket.
One can fly to the airport on Cozumel island, but I've always flown to Cancún, then boarded a bus to Playa del Carmen, then boarded a ferry boat to Cozumel. (And then did the reverse to return home.) Takes longer but it's another whole adventure and you can see "the in-between" where the real people live.
Otherwise, I've been to Nuevo Laredo several times, to Matarmoros once, to Acapulco for 24 hours, to Cabo San Lucas for a few days (where the kayaking in the Sea of Cortez is spectacular).
I enjoy Mexico. I've never had a problem there. Like anywhere else, just pay attention to your surroundings. If something feels "off" in your gut, that's because it is, so don't go there or do that.

Hot take: This is one of those things that would likely be common for Americans if more of Mexico was safe. Mexico City, I've been 20-30 times, but slowed down. Once or twice a year to visit my wifes family
EcstasyCalculus@reddit
I've been to Mexico I think 5 times, to the states of Sonora, Nuevo Leon, Quintana Roo, Queretaro, Hidalgo, the state of Mexico, and Mexico City. I can't say I've had a negative experience anywhere I've been, but I suppose it helps that I speak Spanish (not natively). I would say use your best judgment anywhere you go in Mexico and you'll be fine. If you're worried about violence (which I haven't encountered any), stick to the more touristy areas. One thing I would not do drive over the Mexican border (particularly to Juarez); that's where I've heard the most trouble happens. I probably wouldn't go to Reynose or Matamoros in Tamaulipas, either. But Veracruz I've heard is great, I see no reason not to go.

Never and have no interest in ever going. Too hot, too expensive, I don’t speak any of the languages that are used there, not even the majority one, Spanish.
And yes, I understand it can be cheap to live there, but the cost of being a tourist is significantly higher.
Plus, there are many places I’d rather visit. Nice cold places.

Not very often, I’d love to go again though. I kinda want the cartel thing to simmer down though.
International travel is kind of a hassle. My theory on why Americans don’t go abroad as much as some other nationalities is that because we have a fairly large land mass and incredible diversity in climates and landscapes, there’s not necessarily as much need to go abroad for a really different experience, and that’s been true for me as well. As much as I like Mexico, there’s dozens of spots right here in the U.S. I would absolutely love to visit.
Substantial-Ad-8575@reddit
I go once or twice a year. Vacation only. Most touristy areas are fairly safe.
theirishdoughnut@reddit
My mom used to go like every weekend as a kid, just pop over the border for groceries and stuff. She grew up in a border town in Arizona so not a typical American experience, and she’s a boomer. From what I’ve heard this practice is less common now simply because the security has been tightened so much. Me personally, I’ve never been. But that’s more due to my mom marrying a New Jerseyan and moving most of the way across the country in the opposite direction of Mexico.

I think you don't understand how large the USA is. Even just California or TX. There are people on the border who probably jump back and forth every week. And there are people in Northern part of the state who have never been.
Same thing when we talk about Canada. I knew some people who went to college in Michigan. They were across the border weekly if not more often. They could drink in Canada and I want to say strip clubs were full nude, but in the USA, they couldn't drink and they had titty bars.

Crazy cuz we don’t even go to a very “safe” part either, but I just don’t like the vibes, never cared abt the safety even tho most trips the military would be driving through the streets with machine guns and tanks and bandanas on their heads looking for cartel guys.
Hell once they were mid chase and the guy they were chasing came into our hotel and they shit and killed him.
But seeing those military guys parade the street makes you feel safer just because they are there against the cartels and there is little to not corruption in them

Only about 50% of Americans have passports, which are now required for trips to Mexico and Canada (they weren’t required until maybe 15 years ago?). That said, there are a lot of options to choose from, Mexico being very close, warm, sandy beaches, etc is great, but for similar expense and travel time, depending where you’re going and where you leave, you have the whole Caribbean. Also, for the East coast folks, a trip to Mexico isn’t that much closer than a trip to Western Europe, so it depends what you want out of your travel.
That said, I’m in my late 30s, I’ve been to Mexico maybe 5 times? I’ve had a passport for almost 20 years. I lived about 3 hours from the boarder and never went once. I was able to drive there and didn’t go at all. I’ve only gone while I’ve lived much farther north and had to deal with the cold. I understand people that live where it’s typically hot tend to not vacation where it’s hot.
LonerStonerRoamer@reddit
I live an hour away from the border and haven't been in years. On average, no more than once a year.
There's increased cartel activity around the boarder so it isn't super safe to travel unless you take the main routes during daylight - like middle of the day, not too close to sunrise/sunset. Then once you're at your destination you know you're in a touristy safe zone that's likely paying off the cartels or working for the cartels. So on the one hand it is cheap and everyone kisses your ass as an American tourist with money, but on the other hand cartels. Also, if you travel between destinations or go someplace else, you run a fairly decent chance of being extorted for bribes by local law enforcement who pull you over or stop you on the street for the most arbitrary reasons if they think they can shake you down for a quick $20.
Some people have family there, and it's a different experience but many of the same issues are a factor. At least with family in Mexico you know where to go, when, and with whom fairly securely.
But yeah every so often I'll pop down there for some cheap dinner or some cheap gifts for family in other parts of the USA.

His goal was to retire and move down there full time. Sure enough about 10 years ago he built up the house, retired, sold his house in CA, bought a boat and moved to Mexico full-time. We go down to visit once a year most years.
CaptainLucid420@reddit
I did it way too many times. Tiajuana sells my antidepressants cheaper. One time the Mexican cops tried to shake me down for an 80 dollar bribe for having them but I negotiated it down to 40. Another time I declared my prescriptions to American customs and after 2 hours of trying to figure out if they were illegal and they weren't they offered me a deal. Surrender half of it and you can go or we take all of it and you can challenge it in court eventually. Could you explain how different this decision is from than you can only bring in half your weed. Tne time I was with some fellow camp staff members partying and after I went through I turned around and yelled I told you they wouldn't search me for drugs. They have no sense of humor. Another time I managed to find the border crossing at about 10 PM and it was empty. The guard asked what country I was from and I said California. Go ahead and I said don't you need to see my ID but no. Slept in the back seat of my car until the police showed up and took me to the drunk tank. Surprised I figured out how to get back to my car the next day. One time I found a bar with a mechanical bull and cheap drinks. Had loads of fun that night. Had a month of bruised ribs afterwards.

It can vary, sometimes it’s a month or two between visits to Tijuana and sometimes I’ll go a few times a month. I’ll go for family functions, to go to diner, or to run some errands. Maybe go spend a day or two a little further south doing winery tours.
I usually avoid going to Tijuana between November and February. It just gets too busy and unpredictable crossing the border.

I have only been once. I am on the east coast so Mexico is kind of far away. Canada is a lot closer and I surprisingly have never been there. I mean it is kind of cold but I have always wanted to see the Northern Lights but just hasn't happened for various reasons.
I went to volume by accident on my honeymoon. So what happened was I was on a cruise and I was supposed to go horse back riding to the Mayan ruins. I love horseback riding and I love history so this was perfect for me. Every single time I got stressed while wedding planning as well as starting a business at the same time I would stop and take a deep breath and just picture going on that excursion. It helped me get through a lot of stress.
So the day we were supposed to go we got in line and the ship person told us what beat to go on and we left. About halfway there I realized we were going in the wrong direction. I tracked someone down and found out they put us on the wrong boat.
I never cry in public in front of other people. I did that day. I just burst out crying when I found out I was right we were going in the wrong direction. It was like every single bit of stress I had pushed off thinking I can get through this because I at least get to do this really cool thing hit me all at once.
Honestly though, it turned out to be an okay day. I did have some fun. Not as cool as what I was supposed to do but met some cool people and had some interesting conversations along the way. Also met a professional photographer who taught me how to use my camera and that's how I got into amateur photography as a hobby.

I've only been once, but I grew up farther from Mexico than someone from Toronto, so I think that's common.

I’ve been twice to Tijuana in 2003 and 2005. Outside of that, my only other time will be June 2026 for a wedding in Cancun.

My smart alec answer. The town I live in has a thriving Mexican community. So when I desire a tasty taco, I just stop there. So probably once or twice a month. Truthful answer, Mexico twice in the last 45 years.

Used to go every 2 years. Never Cancun. Last visit was playa del Carmen. Polizia did a shake down on the 5th Ave streets. Wanted money. Took 100$. Let us go. Accused us of smoking pot....maybe some of our small group were. Wanted money. Put a joint in my friends pocket after we gave the money. Scary for us as they threatened to take the guys to jail Last great experience was at the El Dorado. Fab food and felt safe

I’ve been 4 or so times. My husband isn’t a fan or it would probably be more often. Coming from Florida is really cheap/easy to cruise to Cozumel or go to Cancun. It’s sometimes cheaper than going to a Hilton at the beach here in FL
Kennesaw79@reddit
My sister lived in Oaxaca and then Mexico City for 6 years (moved back to US a year ago), and I visited her in MC two years ago. Three years ago I went on a cruise with two stops in Mexico. Before that, hadn't been since I was a kid, when my mom and I visited from Arizona to buy vanilla.

My husband and I spent a month in Puerto Vallarta in 2019. We thought about moving there but the humidity was a dealbreaker. We also visited Cancun in 2004, Cabo in 2005 and Ensenada in 2006.

I’ve been a few times to Cabo, Guadalajara, and Mexico City (twice) as well as day trips across the border, but I live in Southern California, I’m fluent in Spanish, and my ex was from Guadalajara.
I would say the average American who doesn’t have family in Mexico and doesn’t live near the border has maybe gone once to a resort in Cancun. That or they were in San Diego and decided to do a day trip to TJ. I’m from the Midwest and one my friend’s only international trip ever was going to Cancun for her honeymoon. Mexico City is trendy with people who do a lot of international travel but not with average people.

My parents are from Laredo, TX so growing up when we'd visit Laredo for Thanksgiving or Easter or just because we'd always go across the border for a few hours.
Then after my grandparents died there was really no reason to go to Laredo and so I stopped crossing, but I've still visited other parts of Mexico like Real de Catorce in San Luis Potosí when I was a teenager a couple of times. As an adult I went to San Miguel de Allende and a couple years ago I went for a birthday weekend to Mexico City. It's always been a good time for me

A lot of southern Californians go to Baja a fair amount. I actually drove all the way to see the total eclipse of the sun in Cabo in 1991 and then went to the mainland for the first time ever for the eclipse in Mazatlan.

Most Americans go on cruises so just for day stops (typically Cozumel, Costa Maya, etc). Or if they’re going for a longer resort stay 90% of the time it would be Cancun or Cabo San Lucas. All of these areas are very touristy and safe on the resorts and surrounding areas. Most Americans don’t just go the very authentic areas unless you have friends or family from there. It’s typically more of a relaxing resort/beach trip.
ArtisticDegree3915@reddit

Lived close when growing up. Used to go a lot of meds, doctors, etc. Plus they would let high schoolers drink in clubs there lol. Crime stuff started making the news and get bad when I was in high school. Only been back 2 times since, and those times I flew into Mexico and didn't leave the resort. Beautiful beaches and awesome gay scene. One of these days I will go back and see the sites. I know people say it is a tourist trap, but I really want to see the Chichén Itzá and the mayan and aztec ruins.

Just once. Around the mid-90s, while vacationing in Texas, we crossed the border from Brownsville into Matamoros, I believe it's called.
It was quite a culture shock to say the least. Our cab ride was nearly terrifying as the driver was speeding and cutting all over the place. There were young children selling Chiclet like gum for something like 25 cents. And then there was the shopping. My ex loved the whole bartering thing, but at that time, the thought of that mortified me, so I just paid whatever they asked.
