Forget North-South divide. Is there an East-West divide?

I think there is, but it's more subtle. The north-south divide is primarily about patterns of 19th century industrialisation. The east-west divide is about 6th to 9th century patterns of Saxon settlement. I think (as a very general rule, subject to many exceptions) the further west you go the friendlier and more communitarian people are. Those in the West are more inclined to a Celtic sentimentality and spirituality, and to a family-clan patterns of authority. Those in the East are more inclined to a Saxon individualism, an impersonal rules-based system of authority, and a more rationalist cast of mind. East Anglia was the hotbed of Puritanism, whereas Anglo-Catholicism has flourished in the West of England. Of course, if you go West enough in Britain, you leave Angle-land entirely, and end up in a place where they even still speak Celtic.
