Two students in Austria, what's your advice?

Me and a friend want to have a trip in Austria in july.
Being two 19yo, we have absolute no experience traveling, and also on a tight budget.
Our plan was one week, flight to vienna since is very cheap for us.
Then, we wanted to visit for 3/4 days Vienna to then visit another city and hike on the local mountains. Reading online Innsbruck and Salzburg are a good choices.
But honestly we feel a bit overwhelmed, we don't want to spend too much on hotels but I'm not sure how.
Anyone willing to lend a hand?

If your budget is tight, I would ask myself if you want to spend all of your time in Austria, or maybe just a few days, and if you can find one grab a budget flight somewhere where the cost of living is so much cheaper. There is no right and wrong and it also totally depends on how much money you have and what you want.
In a few years you’ll have much more money and then you can visit Austria in style.
If you go hiking, another option is to take a tent with you and avoid paying for hotels.

You’re not Austrian, are you?
Not a good idea with the tent. Wild camping (or trail camping) isn’t a thing, it’s illegal. You need to get a hut or proper spot, they are barely cheaper than a hostel but way more hassle.

Are you Austrian? When you go hiking and are young and look safe, farmers will often allow you to pitch your tent on their property if you promise to leave no rubbish behind.

Yes I am. And yes it may work. Not denying that. But that’s like saying : Save your train and bus tickets and just hitch hike. If someone wants to go through all that hassle just to save a few bucks, sure. But it’s not my recommendation at all.
Generally, it’s not a thing. Not even remotely as it is in the US. In the US you can just pitch a tent in a national forest (and many other places) and it’s perfectly normal. Not so in Austria.

I don’t think our 19 year old friends want to go through the hassle. I suspect it may be the only way they can afford to tour Austria, which they apparently want to do.

Vienna for a few days sounds great. After that go for Salzburg, it's cheaper and still close to nice mountain spots. Use OBB for cheap trains and look into hostels or student guesthouses (like a&o or Meininger)

Vienna is a great safe city, although it’s definitely one of the more expensive ones in Europe as Austria is on the more expensive side. There will definitely be some affordable hostels so have a look on hostelworld. If you’re wanting to see lots of attractions in Vienna I’d recommend buying the city card from the Vienna tourism website. This combines some of the major attractions, plus unlimited access to metro and tram for a couple of days, all at a fixed price. Heard good things about Innsbruck, Salzburg and Hallstatt, but I can’t speak from experience.

Look into hostels. They are nice ( unlike in the US).
If you’re going to Salsburg, the lake town of Hallstatt is a nice day trip. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and very adorable. Once you get off the train from Salzburg, a boat meets you and takes you to the town. There’s hiking, and it’s beautiful . It might have an affordable hostel in town, too, but you’d have to check that.

Youth hostels are very good. A&O and also Meininger spring to mind but any you book will be good. Take a train to Salzburg. Its amazing. Vienna is amazing. Ask away, but try to be a bit more specific. Try booking your places to stay first so say 4 in Vienna and 3 in Salzburg and go from there.
